Effective Recognition Of Multiple Anions By An Azobenzene--Al$^{\Mathbf{3+}}$ System, Ye Zhang, Ping Jia, Zhangfa Tong, Hai-Bo Liu, Jing Wang
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
A ready-to-use multifunctional coordinative system, 2,2'-dihydroxyazobenzene --aluminum (III) (DHAB--Al$^{3+})$, was created to recognize several anions effectively through three channels, namely colorimetric detection, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy. Under naked eye visualization, the H$_{2}$PO$_{4}^{-}$ can be readily distinguished from the other anions by the DHAB--Al$^{3+}$ system through a change in color from reddish-orange to light yellow. H$_{2}$PO$_{4}^{-}$ was qualitatively detected by using UV-Vis and fluorescence spectra. Differentiating SO$_{3}^{2-}$, HPO$_{4}^{2-}$, and HCO$_{3}^{-}$ anions colorimetrically is difficult; thus, CO$_{3}^{2-}$, SO$_{3}^{2-}$, HPO$_{4}^{2-}$, and HCO$_{3}^{-}$ were discriminated by adopting distinct changes in the UV-Vis spectra. CO$_{3}^{2-}$, HPO$_{4}^{2-}$, and HCO$_{3}^{-}$ were accurately quantified using fluorescence spectra. …

Due to the great number of publications and limited space here, we made a special attempt to compile the relevant data in tables, which we hope will serve as a guide …
Theatre Safety In Louisiana Secondary Schools: A Survey Study, Christopher Pyfrom
Theatre Safety In Louisiana Secondary Schools: A Survey Study, Christopher Pyfrom
LSU Master's Theses
Participation in secondary school theatre can have many benefits including the development of improved reading comprehension, self-concept, and empathy. In the world of professional theatre, each design area has its own department head and several levels of assistants and workers below them. Yet in the world of secondary school theatre, we expect one person to assume all of those roles in addition to the regular responsibilities of teaching. Not many people see theatre as being dangerous when compared to sports, science labs, or vocational education. However, it can contain many of the same risks. This study investigated several factors that …

Investigating The Effect Of Photographic Representations On Scores Of The Stroke And Aphasia Quality Of Life Scale-39 For People With Moderate To Severe Aphasia, Samantha Studrawa
LSU Master's Theses
Background: The Stroke and Aphasia Quality of Life-39 (SAQOL-39) is a valid and reliable measure of quality of life (QOL) for stroke survivors and people with mild-to-moderate aphasia However, it could not be validated for people with severe aphasia due to their language deficits. Research has shown that combining pictures with written text can support communication effectiveness of people with aphasia. Combining language modalities in this way is a form of alternative or augmentative communication (AAC). The use of AAC has been explored as a possibility to improve communication for people with severe aphasia (Dietz, McKelvey & Beukelman, 2006). Aim: …

Investigating The Role Of Objective And Subjective Task Complexity On Retirement Investment Plan Earnings Judgments, Natasha Hardy
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
This research addressed the effect of retirement plan task complexity on retirement plan earnings estimates. Past research has shown that increased task complexity results in more decision-making errors as well increased use of heuristics, or rules of thumb, which can result in non-optimal outcomes such as under-saving or disproportionate equity/income balances (Benartzi & Thaler, 2001, 2007; Maynard & Hakel, 1997). This research used two experiments to test whether individuals would judge a retirement investment plan with high task complexity to be more profitable than a plan with low task complexity - a non-normative and potentially costly bias. Experiment 1 used …

Development Of High Capacity Hyperbranched Nitric Oxide Donors For Controlling Subcutaneous Inflammation, Sean Hopkins
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Implanted medical devices undergo complications the longer they remain in contact with tissue or blood. This rejection of foreign materials by our body is one of the largest reasons innovations in biomedical sensors and implanted technology are being held back. One means to hold off this unwanted response is through the utilization of nitric oxide (NO) releasing materials. Two unique NO releasing polymeric materials were synthesized and characterized before being implanted subcutaneously. Both NO releasing materials described used S-nitrosothiol (RSNO) chemistry as the main mechanism for NO release. The first material described covalently links an RSNO to the backbone of …

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Measuring the similarity between two streamlines is fundamental to many important flow data analysis and visualization tasks such as feature detection, pattern querying and streamline clustering. This dissertation presents a novel streamline similarity measure inspired by the bag-of-features concept from computer vision. Different from other streamline similarity measures, the proposed one considers both the distribution of and the distances among features along a streamline. The proposed measure is tested in two common tasks in vector field exploration: streamline similarity query and streamline clustering. Compared with a recent streamline similarity measure, the proposed measure allows users to see the interesting features …
The Mechanisms Of Α-Amanitin Resistance In The Fruit Fly Drosophila Melanogaster, Chelsea L. Mitchell
The Mechanisms Of Α-Amanitin Resistance In The Fruit Fly Drosophila Melanogaster, Chelsea L. Mitchell
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Insect pesticide resistance has become a costly problem in the US. To make things more problematic, resistance to one pesticide is often associated with cross-resistance to other toxins, including pesticides that have not yet even been developed. In this study, we investigated a possible type of cross-resistance in the model fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, some stocks of which are resistant to the very potent mushroom toxin α-amanitin. Because α-amanitin is solely produced by mushrooms, and because D. melanogaster does not feed on mushrooms in nature, the fruit flies should not be resistant to this toxin. In order to understand …

Laboratory And Field Investigation Of Mixing, Morphology And Optical Properties Of Soot And Secondary Organic Aerosols, Noopur Sharma
Laboratory And Field Investigation Of Mixing, Morphology And Optical Properties Of Soot And Secondary Organic Aerosols, Noopur Sharma
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Soot/ black carbon particles are believed to be the second largest anthropogenic contributor to the Earth’s radiative forcing, and are emitted from combustion processes. Freshly emitted soot has a fractal-like structure in which monomers are arranged into branched chain-like configuration. In the atmosphere, soot mixes with and is processed by interacting with other co-existing particle and vapors. The processing that soot undergo after emission alters its morphology; for example, condensation of vapors results into coated, mixed or compacted soot depending upon the environmental conditions. Changes in soot morphology have a strong and direct influence on its optical properties.

The Effect Of Water Temperature On In-Stream Sediment Concentration And Transport Rate, Jennie Tyrrell
The Effect Of Water Temperature On In-Stream Sediment Concentration And Transport Rate, Jennie Tyrrell
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Global climate change may result in rising temperatures. As a result, ecological health and the human use of rivers may be impacted. The hydrologic cycle, watershed hydrology, and in-stream hydraulics are dynamic systems, influenced by human activities, natural events, and climate. Although known drivers like precipitation and stream velocity govern sediment processes, the effect of water temperature on sediment transport remains unclear. In-stream sediment movement could lead to blocked harbors, flooding, and degradation of vulnerable fish habitat. To better understand how fluctuations in water temperature affect sediment dynamics, six transport models were analyzed on the Niobrara River, with water temperatures …

Enabling Techniques For Expressive Flow Field Visualization And Exploration, Jun Tao
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Flow visualization plays an important role in many scientific and engineering disciplines such as climate modeling, turbulent combustion, and automobile design. The most common method for flow visualization is to display integral flow lines such as streamlines computed from particle tracing. Effective streamline visualization should capture flow patterns and display them with appropriate density, so that critical flow information can be visually acquired. In this dissertation, we present several approaches that facilitate expressive flow field visualization and exploration. First, we design a unified information-theoretic framework to model streamline selection and viewpoint selection as symmetric problems. Two interrelated information channels are …
