Optimisation Of Rebreeding Strategy In Uk Holstein Dairy Cattle- A Multifactorial Study, Richard Michael Miller Jan 2015

Optimisation Of Rebreeding Strategy In Uk Holstein Dairy Cattle- A Multifactorial Study, Richard Michael Miller

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Dairy production in the UK has undergone a period of sustained increase both in number of cows held in each unit and yields per cow. Whilst much of this yield increase can be attributed to nutritional science, the production capacity of individual animals has also contributed significantly through both higher peak yields and greater persistency of production throughout lactation. This additional production has not come without cost which has manifested itself as a general decrease in reproductive performance. Although the associated lengthening of the calving interval has led to an increase in herd average days in milk, the question arises …

Natural Phenolic Extracts From Cardamom (Elettaria Cardamomum), Sumac (Rhus Coriaria) And Pomegranate (Punica Granatum)- Potential Application To Control Pathogenic Bacteria In Foods, Abass Fadhil Razoki Aal-Tay Jan 2015

Natural Phenolic Extracts From Cardamom (Elettaria Cardamomum), Sumac (Rhus Coriaria) And Pomegranate (Punica Granatum)- Potential Application To Control Pathogenic Bacteria In Foods, Abass Fadhil Razoki Aal-Tay

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Abstract Food-borne disease is still a concern for both consumer and food industry in spite of the use of various preservation techniques. Plant extracts are becoming more popular as naturally occurring antibacterial agents. Antibacterial activity of cardamom, sumac, pomegranate, star anise and cranberry extracts and their minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Salmonella typhimurium, Listeria monocytogenes and Clostridium perfringens were determined using agar well diffusion and broth dilution methods. Sumac and pomegranate alcoholic extracts and cardamom oleoresin showed strong antibacterial activity, and their MIC range were: for sumac (3-10 mgml-1), for pomegranate (6-12 mgml-1) and …

Flaring And Pollution Detection In The Niger Delta Using Remote Sensing, Barnabas Ojo Morakinyo Jan 2015

Flaring And Pollution Detection In The Niger Delta Using Remote Sensing, Barnabas Ojo Morakinyo

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Abstract Through the Global Gas Flaring Reduction (GGFR) initiative a substantial amount of effort and international attention has been focused on the reduction of gas flaring since 2002 (Elvidge et al., 2009). Nigeria is rated as the second country in the world for gas flaring, after Russia. In an attempt to reduce and eliminate gas flaring the federal government of Nigeria has implemented a number of gas flaring reduction projects, but poor governmental regulatory policies have been mostly unsuccessful in phasing it out. This study examines the effects of pollution from gas flaring using multiple satellite based sensors (Landsat 5 …

Art In The Public Realm And The Politics Of Rural Leisure: Access And Environment, Alex Murdin Jan 2015

Art In The Public Realm And The Politics Of Rural Leisure: Access And Environment, Alex Murdin

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Exploring both political aesthetics and the politics of aesthetics to outline an environmental ruralism for art in public spaces, this practice lead research project postulates a “complemental practice”, outlining its methodology and contexts for operation, the rural, spaces of leisure and the public realm. It is a response to threats to spatial and environmental commons from heritage, place-making and nostalgia, psychological inhibition such as a sense of global contingency and widespread economic exploitation. Responses by artists to this situation can be characterised as a binary of dialogism (Kester, 2004) and relational antagonism (Bishop, 2004), i.e. consensual/collaborative or antagonistic/autonomous practices. Informing …

Reproducing ‘Geopolitics’ – National Identity Representations Of Foreign Affairs In Moldova, Roxana Adina Huma Jan 2015

Reproducing ‘Geopolitics’ – National Identity Representations Of Foreign Affairs In Moldova, Roxana Adina Huma

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Breaking away from the positivist trend dominating the literature on Moldova’s foreign relations, this thesis analyses the means through which national identity discourses impact on Moldovan societal representation of foreign policy. It contends that national identity perpetuates a Cold War inspired view of foreign affairs. This construction is defined by two main elements, the representation of the civilizational and geopolitical cleavage between East and West and the lack of agency awarded to the Moldovan self. This is achieved through an in-depth study of the national identity debate in Moldova. It focuses on both the two main national identity discourses in …

John Hoyland: The Making And Sustaining Of A Career - 1960-82, Christopher Anthony Davies Jan 2015

John Hoyland: The Making And Sustaining Of A Career - 1960-82, Christopher Anthony Davies

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The thesis explores the making and sustaining of the career of the English abstract artist, John Hoyland from his inclusion in the seminal Situation exhibition of 1960 to his winning the John Moores First (Purchase Prize) in 1982. It investigates the institutional and critical contexts that supported Hoyland’s rise to prominence in the 1960s and situates him within the art world of the time: its galleries, exhibitions, advocates, dealers, critics, patrons and collectors (public and private). It notes the improvements to the art infrastructure in the United Kingdom and assesses whether these improvements had any impact on Hoyland’s career. Careful …

Intercorporeality And Technology: Toward A New Cognitive, Aesthetic And Communicative Paradigm In The Performing Arts, Isabelle Choinière Jan 2015

Intercorporeality And Technology: Toward A New Cognitive, Aesthetic And Communicative Paradigm In The Performing Arts, Isabelle Choinière

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The goal of this thesis was to reassess the relationship between the moving body and technology, and more specifically, to focus on recent perspectives in the performing arts which inscribe new manifestations and dynamics of cross-pollination between the somatic and technology. According to Dr. Andrea Davidson, 'Such research has rarely been formally identified with the specialised field of somatics' (2013, p.3). The thesis thus proposes to reflect on the experience and conception of the performative body in the link it entertains with technology. Investigating this relationship, it defines a new paradigm, that of an 'interfaced intercorporeality'. This paradigm is constructed …

Walk Like An Egyptian: Belly Dance Past And Present Practice In England, Siouxsie Cooper Jan 2015

Walk Like An Egyptian: Belly Dance Past And Present Practice In England, Siouxsie Cooper

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

How Belly Dance practitioners in England construct a sense of self-identity, social-identity and identity-in-practice in a border-crossing Belly Dance ethnoscape is of interest for this research project. What kinds of identities-in-practice do Belly Dancers in England construct in order to authenticate their performance? By applying social theories of education and identity formation, in particular Holland et al’s “figured worlds” (2001), it is possible to critically frame the development of a practitioner’s Belly Dance identity over a period of time. The research presents the case that Belly Dance in England has an identifiable past and present practice, one that continually wrestles …

Airport Territory As Interface: Mobile Work And Travel In Hybrid Space., Monika Ewa Codourey Jan 2015

Airport Territory As Interface: Mobile Work And Travel In Hybrid Space., Monika Ewa Codourey

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Premise In order to understand the future potential of work and air travel experience for constant travellers, design approaches from architecture and research methods from social studies should be combined. Abstract Global mobility, wireless technology and networked society are transforming the airport territory. These changes (hard factors) have been analysed in airport planning and transportation studies (Koll-Schretzenmayr 2003; Banister 2003; Schaafsma 2003; Knippenberger &Wall 2010; Salewski & Michaelli 2011; Convenz & Thierstein ed. 2014 et al) and architecture and design (Edwards 1998; Blow 2005; Cuadra 2002; Uffelen 2012; Gensler 2013 et al). But design strategies focusing on the passenger experience …

The Ontology Of The Venetian Halo In Its Italian Context, Susan Morag Martin Jan 2015

The Ontology Of The Venetian Halo In Its Italian Context, Susan Morag Martin

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis aims to reposition the halo’s status within an artwork through arguing a reassessment of its activity 'as a sign' rather than acceptance of its passivity. This active state is further explored and expanded by a heuristic application of semiotic theory to interrogate its fluctuation between sign/non-sign and its oscillation between a seemingly real status and behaviour juxtaposed with its very consciously artificial “manifestation”. A variety of halo shapes are considered, together with texture contained in and on its surface, and this has revealed the Venetian and Venetan artistic innovation of “glass” and “silk” haloes, through artists’ utilisation of …

International Study Visits And The Promotion Of Intercultural Capabilities: An Exploratory Study, Valerie Huggins Jan 2015

International Study Visits And The Promotion Of Intercultural Capabilities: An Exploratory Study, Valerie Huggins

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Internationalisation is high on the agenda of Higher Education in the UK, with the promotion of the students’ intercultural capabilities seen as key for their future careers and lives as global citizens. Within this agenda international study visits are considered beneficial for student teachers, giving those with limited exposure to cultural diversity an opportunity to learn first-hand about education in other countries. Taking a postmodern approach and using Facet Methodology, the research investigated the extent to which the pattern of study visits in a School of Education in a University in the South West of England was conducive to promoting …

Designing A Taxonomy For Virtual Museums For The Use Of Avicom Professionals, Simona Caraceni Jan 2015

Designing A Taxonomy For Virtual Museums For The Use Of Avicom Professionals, Simona Caraceni

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis aims to go beyond the concept of so called ‘virtual museums’. In this work I will attempt to trace a new definition of the term ‘virtual museum’ providing the concept with renewed dignity, comparable to ICOM’S definitions of museums and other existing definitions of the concept. To do so the main part of this thesis is about creating a metamodel of taxonomy capable of including all the experimentations that have taken place in the field of ‘virtual museums’ in the last 20 years. In this direction I have investigated the concept of the museum as a medium as …

The Legal Regimes Governing Marine Renewable Energy In England And Wales, Victoria Jane Hamlyn Jan 2015

The Legal Regimes Governing Marine Renewable Energy In England And Wales, Victoria Jane Hamlyn

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis involves an examination of the main international, regional and national legal regimes regulating marine renewable energy in England and Wales. Deriving from a complex patchwork of law and policy, developments have ensued in the absence of a distinct governing ‘legal regime’ and within a number of competing paradigms. This original synthesis attempts to identify lacunae, conflicts and connections within and between the span of legal genres that MRE evokes. Against a backdrop of climate change mitigation, the key findings show that despite the presence of political will for offshore renewable energies, MRE development faces a number of legal …

The Go-Between. The Film Archive As A Mediator Between Copyright And Film Historiography., Claudy Wilhelmina Elisabeth Op Den Kamp Jan 2015

The Go-Between. The Film Archive As A Mediator Between Copyright And Film Historiography., Claudy Wilhelmina Elisabeth Op Den Kamp

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Based on the premise that only in being accessible can the film reach its potential for history making, the contribution of the film archive to a particular film historical narrative is fragmented: the films that are extant are not necessarily available and the ones that are available are not necessarily publicly accessible. The contention of the thesis is that ‘doing’ film history in the context of the film archive should always be seen in light of an ever increasingly narrowing fragmentation of accessible material that takes place in the film archive. What is new about the contribution of this thesis …

Trigger Point Theory As Aesthetic Activism, Aviva Rahmani Jan 2015

Trigger Point Theory As Aesthetic Activism, Aviva Rahmani

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Trigger Point Theory as Aesthetic Activism: A Transdisciplinary Approach to Environmental Restoration Aviva A. Rahmani This dissertation presents a new approach to addressing environmental degradation based on transdisciplinary ecological art. Transdisciplinarity is defined here as merging art and science to discover new insights. Ecological art is defined as an aesthetic practice that promotes environmental resilience. This writing will describe why those approaches are essential to restoring resilient bioregionalism. It introduces the author’s own heuristic perspectives and methodologies and demonstrates how they may be integrated with technology and science. The problems of accelerated loss of coastal (littoral) zone biodiversity, degraded water …

Rex Whistler (1905-1944) Patronage And Artistic Identity, Nikki Frater Jan 2015

Rex Whistler (1905-1944) Patronage And Artistic Identity, Nikki Frater

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis explores the life and work of Rex Whistler, from his first commissions whilst at the Slade up until the time he enlisted for active service in World War Two. His death in that conflict meant that this was a career that lasted barely twenty years; however it comprised a large range of creative endeavours. Although all these facets of Whistler’s career are touched upon, the main focus is on his work in murals and the fields of advertising and commercial design. The thesis goes beyond the remit of a purely biographical stance and places Whistler’s career in context …

Devising Solo Performance: A Practitioner’S Enquiry, Misri Dey Jan 2015

Devising Solo Performance: A Practitioner’S Enquiry, Misri Dey

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This research explores the validity and value of ‘solo devising’ as a means for specifying a category of theatre-making that has been little discussed, compared to group devising, in existing literature on devising and postdramatic theatre. Primary source material was obtained through carrying out extended interviews with five experienced British theatre practitioners who have made work that could be described as solo devised performance: Tim Etchells, Bobby Baker, Mike Pearson, Nigel Charnock and Wendy Houstoun. In analysing these interviews, referred to in detail but not reproduced in full, the enquiry draws on a range of writings, including Oddey, Heddon, Harvie, …

Every Frame Counts: Creative Practice And Gender In Direct Animation, Kayla Parker Jan 2015

Every Frame Counts: Creative Practice And Gender In Direct Animation, Kayla Parker

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis interrogates the ways in which the body-centred practices of women film artists embrace the materiality of direct animation in order to foreground gendered, subjective positions. Through the researcher's own creative practice, it investigates how this mode of film-making, in which the artist works through physical engagement with the film materials and the material processes of film-making, might be understood as feminine and/or feminist. Direct animation foregrounds touch as the primary sense. Its practices are process-based and highly experimental, because images are made through the agency of the body operating within restrictive parameters, making results difficult to predict or …

Knowledge Management Competence For Erp Implementation Success, Uchitha Jayawickrama Jan 2015

Knowledge Management Competence For Erp Implementation Success, Uchitha Jayawickrama

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The global business environment has changed dramatically in recent years, as competition in complex knowledge-based economies has increased. Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems have been viewed as a way to manage increased business complexity, leading to the rapid adoption and implementation of such systems, as ERP can support enterprises to improve their competitiveness. Knowledge management (KM) is crucial for ERP systems implementation, however a highly demanding task. Therefore, the primary concern of this research is to examine the effectiveness of knowledge management activities that would contribute to achieve ERP implementation success. This study adopted mixed methods approach by combining semi-structured …

Legitimising Discourses And The Efforts To Reform The European Union’S Fiscal Governance Arrangements, Thomas Warren Jan 2015

Legitimising Discourses And The Efforts To Reform The European Union’S Fiscal Governance Arrangements, Thomas Warren

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

With a rapid centralisation of fiscal sovereignty now being aired as a possibility following on from the financial and economic crisis, this thesis considers how legitimising discourses are shaping the efforts to reform EU fiscal governance. Norman Fairclough’s ‘moderately constructivist’ three-dimensional framework for CDA is drawn upon. This approach is also combined with insights drawn from the new institutionalist literature base (particularly from its historical and discursive strands of thought), with an additional emphasis being placed on broader understandings of structural forms of power as developed through the writings of Susan Strange. It is found that the emerging debate over …

A Comparative Study Of The Obligation Of Due Diligence To Provide A Seaworthy Vessel Under The Hague/Hague-Visby Rules And The Rotterdam Rules, Talal Aladwani Jan 2015

A Comparative Study Of The Obligation Of Due Diligence To Provide A Seaworthy Vessel Under The Hague/Hague-Visby Rules And The Rotterdam Rules, Talal Aladwani

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

In the last 100 years, vast technological and communicational changes have occurred in all modes of transportation, with momentous changes to the carriage of cargo by sea. In response, the shipping industry has attempted to codify, at the international level, regulations and standards with the aim of providing a safe environment at sea. In turn, the shipping industry’s regulations impact upon the way sea carriage is performed. The obligation of seaworthiness is no exception. The requisite standard of seaworthiness is also, to a limited extent, governed by the shipping indsutry’s regulations. It is notable that the shipping industry’s regulations cannot …

The Role Of Literary Texts In Tourism Destination Management, Place Creation And Marketing: A Case Study On Concarneau In Finistère, Brittany, And The Simenon Novel, The Yellow Dog, Charles Mansfield Jan 2015

The Role Of Literary Texts In Tourism Destination Management, Place Creation And Marketing: A Case Study On Concarneau In Finistère, Brittany, And The Simenon Novel, The Yellow Dog, Charles Mansfield

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This doctoral thesis approaches literary tourism initially from an historical perspective in order to define the phenomenon through a review of the existing academic literature in the field. The forms of literary tourism are analysed to provide a typology and from this the value of literary tourism is explained both from the visitor's point of view and the destination manager's. Current theories underpinning the existing literature on literary tourism, including Bourdieu's concept of cultural capital are reviewed. To extend the current state of research and to answer the research questions a case study of successful urban literary tourism is identified, …

An Ontology Of Space: Methodological Recursiveness And The Diagram, Rita Cachao Jan 2015

An Ontology Of Space: Methodological Recursiveness And The Diagram, Rita Cachao

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Current debates on space reveal a dichotomy between two apparently conflicting understandings of space: on the one hand, space is understood as a physical, tangible entity that has an impact on how we perceive, feel and emotionally inhabit the world, and on the other hand, space is conceived as an abstract entity, suggesting that space has no active role (a productivity) within everyday life, being solely a conceptual product of intellectual reasoning. As a result, the commonly used word: ‘space’, will be discussed as an ontologically paradoxical, ambiguous and elusive concept; a concept that cannot be captured within a single …

Polyphibianism: Evolving Transdisciplinarity Into An Imaginary Organism Of Living Knowledge, Ziva Ljubec Jan 2015

Polyphibianism: Evolving Transdisciplinarity Into An Imaginary Organism Of Living Knowledge, Ziva Ljubec

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Transdisciplinarity emerged from the urge to grasp the elusive knowledge in the most fertile zone in between and beyond disciplines that escapes even the most elaborate interdisciplinary operations. While interdisciplinary protocol enables experts to operate within foreign disciplines, in the extreme case as diverse as art and science (by inviting artists into scientific departments and vice versa), the production of knowledge remains confined to particular domains. To transcend these confinements and access the knowledge that evades institutionalisation Basarab Nicolescu’s Manifesto of Transdisciplinarity sets up conditions for an open structure to be grown outside the current compartmentalisation into a living knowledge. …

Machine Performers: Agents In A Multiple Ontological State, Louis-Philippe Demers Jan 2015

Machine Performers: Agents In A Multiple Ontological State, Louis-Philippe Demers

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

In this thesis, the author explores and develops new attributes for machine performers and merges the trans-disciplinary fields of the performing arts and artificial intelligence. The main aim is to redefine the term “embodiment” for robots on the stage and to demonstrate that this term requires broadening in various fields of research. This redefining has required a multifaceted theoretical analysis of embodiment in the field of artificial intelligence (e.g. the uncanny valley), as well as the construction of new robots for the stage by the author. It is hoped that these practical experimental examples will generate more research by others …

The Construction Of National Identity In Post-1918 Poland, Bartosz Lyszkiewicz Jan 2015

The Construction Of National Identity In Post-1918 Poland, Bartosz Lyszkiewicz

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis analyses the construction of the modern national identity in Poland following the state’s creation in 1918. Its central aim is to argue that although much of Poland’s national identity was, in fact, the product of the revolutionary eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, in the twentieth century, ethnocultural foundations proved essential in the process of nation building. In order to offer a novel approach to this issue this thesis will evaluate the programmes of the émigré organizations and political parties to demonstrate the role of the two national currents: ethnic/organic and civic/territorial, which developed during the nineteenth century and shaped …

Discursive Designing Theory - Towards A Theory Of Designing Design -, Juergen Faust Jan 2015

Discursive Designing Theory - Towards A Theory Of Designing Design -, Juergen Faust

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

Discursive Designing Theory - Towards a Theory of Designing Design- Juergen Faust Motivated by the immature theoretical framework of design, this thesis employs transdisciplinary discourse to provide a contemporary and forward-looking model of design and design theory, as well as the linkages between the two, along with the necessary methodology. The discourse involves research into the current understanding of design, its principles, its practice and conceptual framework. The methodology developed and employed in this thesis can be outlined in five steps: 0. Design briefing 1. Developing a conceptual model based on the writings of Michel Foucault and Helmut Krippendorff. 2. …

Subject And Aesthetic Interface - An Inquiry Into Transformed Subjectivities, Kathrine Elizabeth Lorena Johansson Jan 2015

Subject And Aesthetic Interface - An Inquiry Into Transformed Subjectivities, Kathrine Elizabeth Lorena Johansson

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

The present PhD-thesis seeks new definitions of human subjectivity in an age of technoscience and a networked, globalized, Information Society. The perspective presented relates to Philosophy of Science, which includes the Human, the Natural, the Social and the Life Sciences. The project is directed at addressing, and aims to participate in, the further development of Philosophy of Science, or rather, the philosophy of knowing, which leaves a perspective broader than that of science. Methodologically, I combine readings of technoetic artworks, which I approach from a hermeneutical-semiotic perspective, with transdisciplinary research into existing theory concerning the human subject. These readings form …

A Postcolonial Critique Of Industrial Design: A Critical Evaluation Of The Relationship Of Culture And Hegemony To Design Practice And Education Since The Late 20th Century., Taslima Begum

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

A Postcolonial Critique of Industrial Design: A critical evaluation of the relationship of culture and hegemony to design practice and education since the late 20th century. This thesis specifically focuses on the professional practices and training of Western industrial designers using postcolonial theory to inform working practices in a complex global ecology. It investigates the culturally hegemonic construction of design solutions in man-made products. By adopting key ideas from postcolonial and cultural studies as a lens to evaluate fields of industrial design discourse, practice and pedagogy, the work proceeds from the premise that design is not intrinsic to a product …

A Decision Support Framework For Selecting Innovative Sustainable Technologies For Delivering Low Carbon Retail Buildings, Syeda Dangana Jan 2015

A Decision Support Framework For Selecting Innovative Sustainable Technologies For Delivering Low Carbon Retail Buildings, Syeda Dangana

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

There is an urgent need to adopt innovative sustainable technologies (ISTs) to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions whilst improving process efficiency of existing retail buildings, due to rising energy prices and the impacts of retail buildings on the environment. Despite their reported advantages, exhibited performance and numerous policies and legislations that encourage their adoption, there is a slow uptake of ISTs in the retail sector. This is due to the fact that the majority of stakeholders consider the task of selecting ISTs as a complex multi-attribute, multi-valued problem involving a large number of stakeholders with numerous, often conflicting objectives. …
