Approximation Of Fire-Return Intervals With Point Samples In The Southern Range Of The Coast Redwood Forest, California, Usa, Gregory Jones, Will Russell
Approximation Of Fire-Return Intervals With Point Samples In The Southern Range Of The Coast Redwood Forest, California, Usa, Gregory Jones, Will Russell
Faculty Publications, Environmental Studies
A legacy of past fires is evident in the form of blackened basal hollows found throughout the southern range of the coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens [D. Don] Endl.) forest. A deeper look reveals cambial scars dating back centuries, telling a story of low- to moderate-intensity fires that burned periodically across California’s Central Coast bioregion. While attempts have been made to reconstruct the fire history of this forest type, estimates of the fire-return interval vary widely, and the relationship of the fire-return interval to varying cultural influences is not fully understood. We analyzed 373 fire scars from 70 cross-sections removed from …
Sustainable Development And The Brazilian Judge, Gabriel Wedy
Sustainable Development And The Brazilian Judge, Gabriel Wedy
Sabin Center for Climate Change Law
This article explores how Brazilian judges have used their authority to promote the environmental, social, economic, and, in particular, governance aspects of sustainable development. Through their decisions, judges have guaranteed Brazilian citizens important rights, which are stated in the progressive Constitution of 1988, drawn up after 20 years of military dictatorship. The citizen’s rights to medical treatment, medicine, surgery, housing and access to education are frequently guaranteed by judicial decisions.
Whether Undistributed Chapter 13 Payment Plan Funds Held By A Chapter 13 Trustee Should Be Distributed To The Debtor Or The Debtor’S Creditors After Conversion From Chapter 13 To Chapter 7, Rosa Aliberti
Bankruptcy Research Library
(Excerpt)
Qualified individuals seeking to reorganize their debts may file under Chapter 13 of the Bankruptcy Code. Under chapter 13, a debtor makes payments according to a court approved payment plan, which is administered by a chapter 13 trustee, and remains in possession of all the property of the estate. Once a debtor makes all his payments under the chapter 13 payment plan, he has a right to seek a discharge, provided that he meets certain requirements. These requirements include that the debtor: (1) certifying that he paid all domestic support obligations prior to the certification being made; (2) received …
Chapter 11 Liquidations And The Termination Of Collective Bargaining Agreements, Cecilia Ehresman
Chapter 11 Liquidations And The Termination Of Collective Bargaining Agreements, Cecilia Ehresman
Bankruptcy Research Library
(Excerpt)
Section 1113 of the Bankruptcy Code governs the modification or rejection of a collective bargaining agreement (“CBA”) by a chapter 11 trustee or debtor-in-possession. To modify or reject a CBA, a trustee or debtor-in-possession must (1) make a proposal to the union which provides the “necessary modifications in the employees benefits and protections that are necessary to permit the reorganization of the debtor”; (2) provide the union with relevant information as is necessary to evaluate the proposal; and (3) meet with the union and confer in good faith. For the modification or rejection to take place, the union must …
Self-Employed Debtors Face A Hard Truth When Calculating Their Current Monthly Income For The Applicable Commitment Periods Under Chapter 13 Plans, Arthur Rushforth
Self-Employed Debtors Face A Hard Truth When Calculating Their Current Monthly Income For The Applicable Commitment Periods Under Chapter 13 Plans, Arthur Rushforth
Bankruptcy Research Library
(Excerpt)
A bankruptcy court may confirm a debtor’s chapter 13 plan of reorganization if the requirements of section 1325(a) of the Bankruptcy Code are satisfied. If the chapter 13 trustee or an unsecured creditor objects to the confirmation of the plan, however, the bankruptcy court may only confirm the plan if it either provides for the repayment in full of claims or that the debtor must devote all of his projected disposable income towards payments of his unsecured creditors during the plan’s “applicable commitment period.” The debtor’s applicable commitment period is five years if the debtor’s current monthly income exceeds …
The Effect Of 3d Collagen Scaffolds On Regulating Cellular Responses, Chad Simmons
The Effect Of 3d Collagen Scaffolds On Regulating Cellular Responses, Chad Simmons
Theses and Dissertations
Epithelial cells, as well as other differentiated cell types, remodel surrounding collagen in vitro, to self organize into 3D structures. When placed on-top or inside of a collagen hydrogel, cells organize into a toroid or spheroid form. It is not clearly understood how these cell types modulate surrounding collagen to form 3D shapes. The goal of this project was to determine if cell type, collagen type, or cell placement are factors that can alter how cells reorganize and remodel collagen hydrogels. We hypothesize that the positioning, cell type and the type of collagen they are in contact with affect the …

Participants were 103 undergraduate PETE students from 14 institutions in South Carolina. Simple descriptive statistics and independent ttests were used to analyze …
A Longitudinal Examination Of The Mediating Role Of Social Problem Solving Between Parental Attachment And Early Adolescents’ Life Satisfaction, Xu Jiang
Theses and Dissertations
Both attachment theory and empirical evidence indicate that the quality of parental attachment profoundly influences many different aspects of adolescent life. However, one area that has been somewhat neglected in the literature is the discovery of the psychosocial mechanisms that account for the link between parental attachment and important adolescent developmental outcomes, such as social problem solving (D’Zurilla & Goldfried, 1971) and life satisfaction (LS: Diener, 1994). Driven by the conceptual framework of development of LS proposed by Evans (1994), Attachment Theory and Social Problem Solving Theory, a mediation model was hypothesized to explore the link between parental attachment and …
Material Considerations For Development Of 3d Printed Bronchial And Tracheal Stents, Nidah M. Hussain
Material Considerations For Development Of 3d Printed Bronchial And Tracheal Stents, Nidah M. Hussain
Theses and Dissertations
Tracheobronchial malacia is a commonly under-diagnosed condition that results in difficulty breathing. The use of a tracheobronchial stent is the best course of treatment for patients whose quality of life has deteriorated due to malacia; unfortunately stents need replacing after issues with inflammation, migration, or eventual stent-breakdown resulting in fistula formation.
The purpose of this thesis is to use three-dimensional (3D) printing technology to improve on existing stents through designing and printing a bioresorbable/biodegradable tracheobronchial stent that can treat tracheobronchial malacia. This was undertaken by testing three biologically favorable materials, type I collagen, polycaprolactone (PCL), and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), with …
Design And Development Of A Ventilation Chamber For Testing Efficacy Of Tracheal Stents, Caroline N. Horton
Design And Development Of A Ventilation Chamber For Testing Efficacy Of Tracheal Stents, Caroline N. Horton
Theses and Dissertations
Tracheobronchial malacia results in a weakening of the tracheal walls, leading to increased difficulty breathing. Stents are used to reopen the lumen of the trachea, however, current models are not personalized to each patient, leading to migration, inflammation, and breakage of the stents. In order to successfully test novel stent designs, a ventilation chamber is needed to recreate the breathing conditions of the body.
The following describes the iterative development of a ventilation chamber, which allows inflation and deflation of lungs via negative pressure ventilation, as representative of an actual body undergoing respiration. Previous work shows that lungs are not …

Vocational Readiness: The Effect Of Pre-Prison And Incarceration-Based Trauma On Cognitive Appraisals And Self-Perceptions Of Incarcerated Women, Joi Dykes Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
The number of women incarcerated in the United States has grown at an alarming rate. This research study presents a conceptual framework for examining pre-prison and incarceration-based trauma and its effects on cognitive appraisals and self-perceptions. Literature from psychology, feminist psychology and neuropsychiatry are integrated to discuss how pre-prison trauma creates pathways to crime for females, how incarceration serves as a form of traumatization (or retraumatization), how the social dynamics of the prison environment potentially exacerbates mental health issues (i.e., PTSD, anxiety, depression), how this negatively affects a female inmates vocational readiness—the ability to obtain and maintain employment once engaged …

Exploring Racial Literacy In Middle Level Teacher Preparation: A Case Study, Deborah H. Mcmurtrie
Exploring Racial Literacy In Middle Level Teacher Preparation: A Case Study, Deborah H. Mcmurtrie
Theses and Dissertations
In the United States, approximately 82% of teachers are white and middle-class, yet their students are strikingly diverse and becoming more so. The mismatch between teachers’ and students’ racial backgrounds is important because teachers who have limited experience with students of color may misinterpret their students’ unfamiliar behaviors and make stereotyped assumptions from a deficit perspective. It is well documented that U.S. schools systematically marginalize and fail many children of color. Disparities in funding, access, and achievement in education are intimately tied to race. Everyday practices in schools perpetuate inequities, but the actual processes can be hard to see. If …
Working Memory In Children With Neurocognitive Effects From Sickle Cell Disease: Contributions Of The Central Executive And Processing Efficiency, Kelsey Erin Smith
Working Memory In Children With Neurocognitive Effects From Sickle Cell Disease: Contributions Of The Central Executive And Processing Efficiency, Kelsey Erin Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Children with sickle cell disease (SCD) are at risk for neurocognitive impairment due to disease effects including stroke, sleep disordered breathing, anemia-induced hypoxia, and small vessel occlusion. In particular, problems in working memory are an area of concern due to the importance of this construct in determining intelligence and academic functioning. According to Baddely’s model, working memory is composed of verbal and spatial working memory, but it is unclear whether one aspect of working memory is more impacted than another in children with SCD. In addition, little is known about the role of two key components in SCD-related working memory …

Cardiorespiratory Fitness, Body Fatness Effect On Submaximal Systolic Blood Pressure And Cardiovascular Prognosis Among Young Adults, Vivek Kumar Prasad
Cardiorespiratory Fitness, Body Fatness Effect On Submaximal Systolic Blood Pressure And Cardiovascular Prognosis Among Young Adults, Vivek Kumar Prasad
Theses and Dissertations
Cardiovascular (CV) diseases (CVDs) are known to be the leading cause of death globally, as CVDs account for the highest rate of mortality compared to any other causes. The mortality from CVDs, is projected to increase to nearly 23.3 million by 2030. Mortality number due to CVD in the United States is 600,000 per year, thus representing nearly 1 in every 4 deaths. Exercise blood pressure (BP) is an important marker of CV events that are associated with incident CV morbidity and mortality among individuals with or without any CVD at present. Elevated exercise BP among individuals with normal resting …
Bayesian Semi- And Non-Parametric Analysis For Spatially Correlated Survival Data, Haiming Zhou
Bayesian Semi- And Non-Parametric Analysis For Spatially Correlated Survival Data, Haiming Zhou
Theses and Dissertations
Flexible incorporation of both geographical patterning and risk effects in cancer survival models is becoming increasingly important, due in part to the recent availability of large cancer registries. The analysis of spatial survival data is challenged by the presence of spatial dependence and censoring for survival times. Accurately modeling the risk factors and geographical pattern that explain the differences in survival is particularly of interest. Within this dissertation, the first chapter reviews commonlyused baseline priors, semiparametric and nonparametric Bayesian survival models and recent approaches for accommodating spatial dependence, both conditional and marginal. The last three chapters contribute three flexible survival …
Figure And Flora, Caleigh Eveleth Goold
Figure And Flora, Caleigh Eveleth Goold
Theses and Dissertations
‘Figure and Flora’ is an exploration of the visual relationship between the human figure and various forms of plant life. It is an exercise in appreciation of the subtle nuances in color, shape and form of the human body which can bear a striking resemblance to vegetation that one would encounter in everyday life. Because we are such visual creatures, recognizing the aesthetic similarities can be an effective first step in realizing the inherent and biological similarities as well. This exhibit is meant to remind people that they are related to many more varied life forms than they may be …

The Evolutionary Biology Of Vision In Daphnia, Christopher S. Brandon
The Evolutionary Biology Of Vision In Daphnia, Christopher S. Brandon
Theses and Dissertations
Eyes have attracted the attention of evolutionary biologist since the field’s infancy. In On the Origin of Species, in fact, Darwin famously remarked on the proposition that natural selection could engineer the eye, saying “[it is] absurd in the highest possible degree.” Though, he goes on to explain, beautifully and simply, how his theory of evolution by natural selection could produce such an organ. Indeed, eyes are remarkable examples of complex information acquisition systems that have evolved from simple beginnings. Eyes allow animals to extract environmental information from light, which informs physiological and behavioral responses to resources, predation, and mates. …
Antecedents Of Adolescents' Hope: Personality, Parental Attachment, And Stressful Life Events, Kristin L. Otis
Antecedents Of Adolescents' Hope: Personality, Parental Attachment, And Stressful Life Events, Kristin L. Otis
Theses and Dissertations
In the past decade, psychology has concentrated on the importance of identifying psychological qualities in individuals that indicate positive mental health and flourishing. Hope has been proposed to be one of these qualities (Day, Hanson, Maltby, Proctor, & Wood, 2010; Marques, & Lopez, 2014). This study examined the relations among parental attachment, stressful life events, personality variables, and hope in a sample of 647 middle school students from one middle school in a Southeastern US state. The results showed statistically significant correlations between hope and all four predictor variables as well as students’ grade levels and socioeconomic status (SES). The …

Processing Of Garden-Path Sentences Containing Silent And Filled Pauses In Stuttered Speech: Evidence From A Comprehensive Study, Elena Galkina
Theses and Dissertations
Disfluency is common in spontaneous speech. Self-correction is a type of disfluency that consists of reparandum, filler, and repair (Levelt, 1989). Little is known about the processing of self-corrections in a normally disfluent speech, and even less is known about its processing in atypically disfluent speech (e.g. speech in patients with autism spectrum disorder, hearing impaired, patients with brain damage, and stuttered speech; see: Lake, Humphreys, & Cardy, 2011; Lind, Hickson, & Erber, 2004; Plexico et al., 2010; Rossi et al., 2011; Yairi, Gintautas, & Avent, 1981). This study focuses on self-correction disfluencies in garden-path sentences and employs a behavioral …
An Investigation Into Quasi-Tunable Rf Passive Circuit Design, Terry L. Moss
An Investigation Into Quasi-Tunable Rf Passive Circuit Design, Terry L. Moss
Theses and Dissertations
Modern wireless electronic circuit design is continually challenged by the needs to reduce circuit size, and to also function reliably with lower power levels. To that end, two aspects of RFIC circuit design and technology have gained great interest, i.e. RF MEMS switching technology, and RF MEMS passive component development. MEMS (Micro-Electromechanical Systems) technology, originally developed for the defense industry, has been in development since the 1970s, and today enjoys wide range of utilization, from the defense industry to the automotive industry. Spiral inductors used in RFIC circuits, e.g. silicon technology, are ubiquitous in wireless RFIC applications. The tradeoff with …
Academic/Success Coaching: A Description Of An Emerging Field In Higher Education, Claire E. Robinson
Academic/Success Coaching: A Description Of An Emerging Field In Higher Education, Claire E. Robinson
Theses and Dissertations
Designed as exploratory and descriptive research, this study aims to understand the purpose, content, and the perceived effectiveness of academic/success coaching programs in higher education. The research provides a quantitative analysis of 160 coaching programs from 39 states designed to assist undergraduate students in their academic and collegiate success. Because “academic coaching” or “success coaching” is a relatively new concept on college campuses, little empirical evidence exists to support this role and differentiate it from other campus services such as academic advising, counseling, mentoring, and tutoring. In order to capture the current roles and responsibilities of coaches, a survey was …
3-D Numerical Simulation Of Carbon Dioxide Injection Into The South Georgia Rift Basin For Geologic Storage, Daniel Eric Taylor Brantley
3-D Numerical Simulation Of Carbon Dioxide Injection Into The South Georgia Rift Basin For Geologic Storage, Daniel Eric Taylor Brantley
Theses and Dissertations
This study numerically simulated the injection of supercritical phase CO2 into the South Georgia Rift (SGR) basin to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of long term geologic storage. The injection simulation modeling was divided into two phases. During phase one of the modeling, very little geologic and reservoir dynamics data was known about the SGR basin. Due to lack of basin data, an equilibrium model was used to estimate the initial hydrostatic pressure, temperature and salinity gradients that represent our study area. For the equilibrium model, the USGS SEAWAT program was used and for the CO2 injection simulation, TOUGH2-ECO2N was …

Complexity In Overmarsh Circulation, Jessica Chassereau Sullivan
Complexity In Overmarsh Circulation, Jessica Chassereau Sullivan
Theses and Dissertations
Overmarsh circulation is highly complex with variations in current direction over very short timescales and flowpaths that differ substantially between flood and ebb cycles. Understanding such flow complexities in salt marshes is important because they inherently impact the distribution of sediment, larvae and nutrients throughout the marsh, and hence, the ecogeomorphic feedbacks that control landscape evolution. The purpose this Ph.D. research is to quantitatively evaluate the effects of salt marsh topography on overmarsh circulation in a Georgia salt marsh. This dissertation is comprised of three parts. First, digital elevation models (DEMs) were compared to characterize how well airborne lidar (light …
What Do We Know About Technical Assistance? Enhancing The Science And Practice Of Technical Assistance Via A Research Synthesis, Jason S. Katz
What Do We Know About Technical Assistance? Enhancing The Science And Practice Of Technical Assistance Via A Research Synthesis, Jason S. Katz
Theses and Dissertations
Introduction. Each year billions of dollars are spent on providing technical assistance (TA) to build the capacity of host settings (e.g., organizations, communities) to implement innovations, but there is little consensus (or even discussion) about: what the essential features of TA are, how to provide TA with quality, and how a quality-based accountability perspective can help us to enhance the science and practice of TA. To begin to address these needs, a research synthesis methodology was used for conducting a content analysis of the current evidence base for TA using three frames: (1) applying a conceptual and operational model (Getting …
