Lateral Control Of A Vehicle Platoon, Sam Mitchell, Kyle Hymas Jan 2015

Lateral Control Of A Vehicle Platoon, Sam Mitchell, Kyle Hymas

Electrical and Computer Engineering

Nationally, freeway congestion costs the economy over $1 trillion annually. Automated vehicles are part of a solution that will prevent future costly and time-wasting traffic jams. The standard lanekeeping control algorithms aren't effective in many adverse environments. Vehicle following is a part of the solution to this complex problem.

The project demonstrates a vehicle following system that will be used by the SATS Group at USU.

Visual Servo Robotic Hand (Vsrh), Ryan Lamoreaux, Amber Mcdougal, Quinn Thomson, Christopher Green

Electrical and Computer Engineering

Our goal with this project was to combine image processing and control systems to inspire future projects. We also wanted to get a better understanding of robotics and help make them more intuitive and less restrictive. Our VSRH mimics a user’s hand without having to physically control the VSRH.

Emergency Vital Signs Monitor, Derek Jensen Jan 2015

Emergency Vital Signs Monitor, Derek Jensen

Electrical and Computer Engineering

According to the Center for Disease Control, every year there are over 120 million visits to the emergency department.

In 2010 alone, at least 55 milion of those visits required care from a trauma center.

As an EMT, it is expected that an initial assessment and transport decision is made within ten minutes of arriving on scene. They need the best information possible to make an informed decision.

Building Sustainable Faith Experience For Urban Youth, Stephen James Crawford Jan 2015

Building Sustainable Faith Experience For Urban Youth, Stephen James Crawford

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Every generation of believers face obstacles in figuring out how to pass on the Christian faith to the next generation. The North American urban church is currently experiencing attrition rates that are startling to the researcher. It is critical that urban Christian believers not take for granted faith transmission will pass to their children similar to how they experience it from their parents. This project is designed to ask questions that will engage the urban Christian community in a productive dialogue to reverse the trend of youth who are rejecting faith at alarming rates. From the conversation, the researcher has …

An Assessment Of Middle School Teachers' Efforts To Integrate Technology Effectively, Plas Williams Jr Jan 2015

An Assessment Of Middle School Teachers' Efforts To Integrate Technology Effectively, Plas Williams Jr

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This study focused on a middle school that, according to the website of its district, should be classified as Target Tech, which is the highest level of technology integration on the Texas School Technology and Readiness (STaR) chart. The middle school has failed to meet this goal in 3 out of 4 focus areas. This mixed method project study investigated how teachers at the school currently use technology to support their teaching and student learning, situations under which teachers would use more technology, and specific technology trainings teachers have taken. The theoretical framework for this project study, diffusion of innovation, …

Constitutional Myopia: The Supreme Court's Blindness To Religious Liberty And Religious Equality Values In Town Of Greece V. Galloway, Alan Brownstein Jan 2015

Constitutional Myopia: The Supreme Court's Blindness To Religious Liberty And Religious Equality Values In Town Of Greece V. Galloway, Alan Brownstein

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

It is difficult to analyze a Supreme Court decision that is as fundamentally misguided and unpersuasive as last term’s decision in Town of Greece v. Galloway, the case upholding state-sponsored prayers before Town Board Meetings. In attempting to do so in this Article, I critically evaluate the Court’s repeated failures to adequately address the serious religious equality and religious liberty issues presented in this case. With regard to religious equality concerns, for example, the Court all but completely ignores the Town’s discrimination in favor of established organized churches and against minorities with too few adherents to organize a congregation …

Harris V. Quinn And The Contradictions Of Compelled Speech, Catherine L. Fisk, Margaux Poueymirou Jan 2015

Harris V. Quinn And The Contradictions Of Compelled Speech, Catherine L. Fisk, Margaux Poueymirou

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

In Harris v. Quinn, the Supreme Court held that unionized homecare workers have a First Amendment right to refuse to pay their fair share of the cost of services that the union is statutorily required to provide. The Court thus transformed what had been a legislative debate about “right-to-work” laws, which about half of states have adopted, into a constitutional requirement for one narrow category of public sector employees. The problem with transforming this policy argument into a First Amendment requirement is that treating fair-share or agency-fee payments to a union as compelled speech raises First Amendment rights of …

Fixing Hollingsworth: Standing In Initiative Cases, Karl Manheim, John S. Caragozian, Donald Warner Jan 2015

Fixing Hollingsworth: Standing In Initiative Cases, Karl Manheim, John S. Caragozian, Donald Warner

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

In Hollingsworth v. Perry, the Supreme Court dismissed an appeal filed by the “Official Proponents” of California’s Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage in California. Chief Justice Roberts’ majority opinion held that initiative sponsors lack Article III standing to defend their ballot measures even when state officials refuse to defend against constitutional challenges. As a result, Hollingsworth provides state officers with the ability to overrule laws that were intended to bypass the government establishment—in effect, an “executive veto” of popularly-enacted initiatives.

The Article examines this new “executive veto” in depth. It places Hollingsworth in context, discussing the initiative process …

Remodeling Federal Medical Malpractice Act: A Possible Improvement To The Affordable Care Act, Nancy Kubasek, Tiffany Durham Jan 2015

Remodeling Federal Medical Malpractice Act: A Possible Improvement To The Affordable Care Act, Nancy Kubasek, Tiffany Durham

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

During the debates about healthcare reform, the Congressional Budget Office found that federal medical liability reform could drastically reduce federal budget deficits, yet political and legal scholars could not reach agreement about the best way for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) to provide such reform. Instead, provisions were made to fund state level demonstration projects. The law that is considered one of the most successful models to date of conventional tort reform is the Medical Injury Compensation Reform Act of California. This Article exams that legislation and discusses how we might use what can be learned from …
