Internet Use And Depression: The Roles Of Emotional Support And Online Support Groups, Aowen Zhu
All ETDs from UAB
This paper explores the mediating mechanisms between internet use and depression among African Americans and Caribbean Blacks. The hypotheses are that emotional support and online support groups (OSGs) mediate the association between internet use and depression. Data come from the National Survey of American Life conducted between 2001 and 2003 that includes a nationally representative sample of African Americans and Black respondents of Caribbean descent (N=4771). Depression is measured by the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression scale with 12 questions. Internet use is measured as frequency of use. Emotional support is measured by a scale of 3 questions. OSGs are measured …

Transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) is one of the most abundant cytokines of the dentin-pulp complex that regulates a broad range of biological processes related to matrix synthesis and ultimately tooth formation, including secretion and mineralization of the dentin extracellular matrix (DECM). TGF-β1 mediates odontoblast cytodifferentiation from precursor dental pulp cells, being up-regulated in odontoblasts and then incorporated into the DECM as a reservoir that can be utilized in times of mechanical, chemical, or bacterial insult. Formation of the DECM is modulated by the actions of small integrin-binding ligand N-linked glycoproteins (SIBLINGs), which include DMP-1, DSPP, BSP, SPP1, and MEPE, with …

Hospital-Based Skilled Nursing Facilities: Predictors Of Survival And Performance, Shivani Gupta
All ETDs from UAB
This three-paper dissertation examined the organizational and market factors predicting the response of hospital-based skilled nursing facilities (HBSNFs) to the changes in their environment such as the implementation of prospective payment system in 1998 and their role in coordination of care for patients in transition from acute care to home or a post-acute care facility. In the first study, population ecology of organizations framework was used to evaluate the organizational and market factors associated with HBSNFs’ closure after 1998. The event histories of all acute-care hospitals which had an open HBSNF in 1998 were examined across 15 years (1998-2012) to …
Novel Non-Invasive Assessment Of Pulmonary Arterial Impedance Using Velocity Transfer Function And Its Relation With Right Ventricular Remodeling, Ankur Gupta
All ETDs from UAB
Pulmonary arterial (PA) impedance takes in to account pulsatile blood flow through elastic pulmonary arteries as compared to static pulmonary vascular resistance. Increased PA impedance is an early physiological manifestation of PA remodeling. Currently PA impedance can only be detected invasively, is expensive and cumbersome to calculate and thus not done in routine clinical practice. The ability to assess PA impedance non-invasively can provide fundamental insights in evaluation of patients with normal PA pressures or mild pulmonary hypertension such as in patients with chronic obstructive lung disease. Non-invasive evaluation of right ventricular (RV)-PA axis to detect patients who could develop …

Microstructural Analysis Of Aluminum High Pressure Die Castings, Maria Diana David
All ETDs from UAB
Microstructural analysis of aluminum high pressure die castings (HPDC) is challenging and time consuming. Automating the stereology method is an efficient way in obtaining quantitative data; however, validating the accuracy of this technique can also pose some challenges. In this research, a semi-automated algorithm to quantify microstructural features in aluminum HPDC was developed. Analysis was done near the casting surface where it exhibited fine microstructure. Optical and Secondary electron (SE) and backscatter electron (BSE) SEM images were taken to characterize the features in the casting. Image processing steps applied on SEM and optical micrographs included median and range filters, dilation, …

All ETDs from UAB
The purpose of this dissertation was to study market and organizational drivers associated with inter-organizational network participation. Inter-organizational networks are increasingly emerging across industries as a strategy for adapting to fundamental changes in competitive market environments. Specifically, this study empirically examined the association between market and organizational drivers for a sample of U.S. hospitals relative to their participation or non-participation in Medicare ACOs as a newly emergent inter-organizational network in the healthcare sector. This was a cross-sectional study of U.S. hospitals participating in Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) designated ACOs as of January 1, 2014 and hospitals not …
G Protein-Coupled Inwardly-Rectifying Potassium (Girk) Chanels Mediate Entrainment Of Circadian Rhythms, Lauren Marie Hablitz
G Protein-Coupled Inwardly-Rectifying Potassium (Girk) Chanels Mediate Entrainment Of Circadian Rhythms, Lauren Marie Hablitz
All ETDs from UAB
Circadian rhythms are 24-hour cycles in biological and behavioral processes. These cycles enable an organism to predict changes in its environment, like changes in food availability and seasonality. Although endogenously driven, these rhythms can entrain or synchronize to daily changes in the environment, allowing the animal to adapt. One way entrainment occurs is shifts in circadian phase following the presentation of nonphotic, or non-light, stimuli, such as exercise, arousal, or stress at certain times of day. The molecular mechanisms underlying nonphotic entrainment are poorly understood - specifically, how nonphotic cues alter excitability within the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the hypothalamus, …

Important considerations for the development of sea urchin aquaculture will include understanding nutrition and feed management. These reported investigations contribute to knowledge of dietary protein and carbohydrate requirements in Lytechinus variegatus and feed management strategies. The first evaluation of economic feasibility of sea urchin aquaculture as related to feed costs is presented and the geometric framework (GF) to assess nutrient intake targets is first applied to cultured aquatic organisms to yield recommendations for nutrient balancing in formulated urchin feed. Data- derived models for dietary protein and carbohydrate intake predict increased rates of growth and production among urchins fed diets containing …
Cortisol Regulation, Perceived Discrimination, And Ethnic Differences In Pain Responses Among Persons With Knee Osteoarthritis, Matthew Herbert
Cortisol Regulation, Perceived Discrimination, And Ethnic Differences In Pain Responses Among Persons With Knee Osteoarthritis, Matthew Herbert
All ETDs from UAB
Plasma cortisol concentrations obtained directly after the Trier Social Stress test are negatively associated with subsequent pain tolerances during the cold pressor task (CPT) among healthy non-Hispanic whites (NHWs), but not healthy African Americans (AAs). It is possible frequent exposure to perceived discrimination, a marker of chronic stress, explains this lack of association between cortisol regulation and pain tolerances among AAs. Our aim was to determine if 1) ethnic differences in pain sensitivity during the CPT could be partially explained by differences in cortisol regulation among persons with knee osteoarthritis (OA), 2) perceived discrimination was related to cortisol dysregulation, which …
Professional Rationality And The Emotional Labor Of Gendered Caring In Nursing, Beverly Kay Hogan
Professional Rationality And The Emotional Labor Of Gendered Caring In Nursing, Beverly Kay Hogan
All ETDs from UAB
ABSTRACT This dissertation offers an understanding of how the emotional labor of caring by female nurses is manifested, and whether this has changed from what has previously been described in the literature. A hybrid of Hochschild‘s (1983) theory of emotional labor is used with concepts from symbolic interactionist and critical theory to guide this inquiry. From this lens, relevant concepts affecting emotional labor are considered in order to examine how the organization of work roles for nurses enable or constrain their ability to manifest a caring presence. As the healthcare delivery system and nurses‘ roles have changed dramatically over the …

Obesity And Mortality In Us-Residing Hispanic Adults, Carrie Howell
All ETDs from UAB
Previous epidemiological studies observed the lack of an association between increased body mass index (BMI: kg/m2) and all-cause mortality in US-residing Hispanic adults. The purpose of this dissertation was to examine the validity of three hypothesized explanations for the absence of significant associations. Using data on Hispanic participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) [1988-1994 and 1999-2004] and the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), this dissertation examined whether: (1) BMI was associated with cause-specific mortality; (2) measures of body composition was associated with all-cause mortality; and (3) the BMI-all-cause mortality association differed as a function of Hispanic …

Infant Feeding Practices, Weight Gain, And Blood Pressure In Toddlers Born Very Preterm, Doris Rodriguez
All ETDs from UAB
Little is known about how weight gain in those born very preterm is associated with blood pressure and if cortisol, a stress biomarker, plays a mediating role. Also, the influence of infant feeding practices on weight gain has been only sporadically addressed. The purpose of this exploratory, descriptive, cross-sectional study was to examine the relationships between infant feeding practices, weight gain, and blood pressure noting any mediating effect cortisol may have between weight gain and blood pressure in 18-to-24 month old corrected age toddlers born very preterm. A convenience sample of 36 18-to-24 month old corrected age toddlers were enrolled. …

All ETDs from UAB
Bacillus anthracis (Ba) is a Gram,-positive zoonotic bacterium that causes inhala- tional, cutaneous and intestinal Anthrax Disease. Although the infectious form of Ba is its endospore (spore), only the tripartite toxin-producing vegetative bacteria causes disease pathology. While current vaccination strategies target the Protective Antigen (PA) com- ponent of this toxin, vaccine-elicited immunity to the spore form of Ba is lacking. How- ever, vaccines targeting spore components of Ba have the potential to neutralize the in- fectious form of Ba. We sought to determine if antibodies elicited through immunization with the main antigenic component of the spore surface- Bacillus collagen-like protein …

Practical Extensions Of The Continual Reassessment Method, Amber Salter
All ETDs from UAB
This dissertation considers the presence of patient heterogeneity in dose finding studies using the likelihood-based time to event continual reassessment method (TITE-CRM). First, assuming group membership is known and the groups share some information regarding their maximum tolerated dose (MTD), we extend the two-group two-parameter CRM to the TITE-CRM. We examine the performance of the two-group two-parameter TITE-CRM for various scenarios where the true MTD for each group is different. We also consider the situation where the groups are truly homogeneous but a heterogeneous model is employed. Our simulations show that the method has some loss in accuracy compared to …

Increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations are continuing to increase and have been linked with decreasing seawater pH as well as atmospheric and seawater warming. Warming along the western Antarctic Peninsula is occurring at one of the fastest rates recorded to date and triggering further environmental changes. To date there are few records of the current seawater pH and temperature conditions experienced by benthic organisms in this region or how they will respond to shifts in pH and temperature predicted to occur by 2100 or sooner. The primary aim of this dissertation was to pa-rameterize the current seawater carbonate …

Role Of Vapb/Als8 Signaling Through Lar Receptor, Jessica Lindsey Winek Schultz
All ETDs from UAB
In humans, a P56S point mutation in the VAPB/ALS8 MSP domain is associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and late-onset spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). The N-terminal MSP domain is cleaved from the C-terminus, and secreted through an unknown, nonconventional manner. The P56S mutation inhibits secretion of the MSP domain. We use Caenorhabditis elegans to study live secretion of VPR-1, as well as to understand vMSP receptor signaling in muscle and gonad. To study the secretion mechanism of VPR-1 we created a transgenic line of C. elegans with a fluorescently tagged VPR-1. Using this model, we were able to visualize live …

A Randomized Trial Evaluating Child Dog-Bite Prevention In Rural China Through Video-Based Testimonials, Jiabin Shen
All ETDs from UAB
Dog-bite injuries pose a significant threat to children around the world. School-aged children are especially at risk of injuries because of their cognitively immature tendency toward poor perception of vulnerability regarding risky behaviors. This risk is elevated further for millions of school-aged children living in rural China due to the large number of stray dogs, all potential rabies carriers. Effective intervention programs for pediatric dog-bite injuries are sparse. Most existing programs were based on public health concerns and only involve the impartment of safety knowledge to children. They produced mixed results in changing actual behaviors with dogs. Based on the …

Gaba(A) Receptor Trafficking And Localization In Schizophrenia, Toni Marie Mueller
All ETDs from UAB
Mechanisms underlying the complex etiology of schizophrenia have long been a subject of scientific inquiry. Early investigations focused on identifying functional deficits in dopaminergic and glutamatergic neurotransmission, but evidence for disrupted GABAergic signaling has also emerged. Recent studies from our lab have identified disrupted N-glycosylation of glutamate receptor and transporter subunits and abnormal subcellular distribution of glutamate receptor subunits, suggesting a potential functional consequence of perturbed N-glycosylation in schizophrenia. N-glycosylation is the posttranslational enzymatic attachment of an oligosaccharide precursor to a protein. This modification plays a significant role in protein processing in the ER and Golgi, and is known to …

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
CPR training is an important part of any collegiate recreation facility’s risk management plan for injury prevention. Because student employees are the first line of defense it is important that they are properly prepared to respond to any emergency situation. Oftentimes classroom training alone is not enough to prepare employees for emergencies. The purpose of this project was to build a training and audit program for CPR in order to build confidence and retain knowledge and skills for student employees in a campus recreation department. A training and audit program was created based on researching programs used by other universities …

Analysis Of Heart Rate Monitor Data Of Division 1 Male Soccer Players Over The Course Of A Season, Brandon Silva
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
The purpose of the first part of this project was to compare and contrast heart-rate monitoring and session RPE as tools to assess internal training load, specifically in soccer players. Soccer is a physiologically demanding sport due to the many actions required of a player over the course of match. Knowledge of internal training load, or the individual physiological “load” on a player, may help coaches or trainers better understand many components of a players fitness including under-training, over-training, and overall fatigue levels. A heart-rate monitor’s ability to calculate internal training load is primarily based upon the well-established relationship shared …

The Role Of Ncaa Division I University Athletic Departments In The Transition Of Their Career-Ending Injured Athletes Out Of Sports, Kaitin Rohrs
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
The NCAA and member institutions claim the responsibility to support and protect collegiate athletes with a priority on their well-being (NCAA, 2014). Although the NCAA provides financial assistance to selected career-ending injured athletes, university athletic departments define the assistance they offer their athletes who obtain career-ending injuries before their athletic eligibility is up (NCAA, 2014). Therefore, there are no universal policies, procedures, or standards in place to ensure that each injured athlete’s well-being is supported and protected during this traumatic life event (Walsh, 2013). Due to the lack of knowledge on written policies and procedures enforced by athletic departments when …

Psychological Skills Training Manual For A Youth Baseball Team, Brian J. Guerriero
Psychological Skills Training Manual For A Youth Baseball Team, Brian J. Guerriero
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
Research has supported the benefits of psychological skills training (PST) programs such as improving the cognitive processes of athletes, which in turn can improve their performance and enhance its consistency (e.g., Blakeslee & Goff, 2007; Frey et al., 2003; Thellwell, Greenlees, & Weston, 2006). A PST program can help athletes to set more effective goals, manage stress more efficiently, build self-confidence, and improve concentration (Horn, 2008; Weinberg & Gould, 2011). In this project, I developed a psychological skills training manual aimed at youth baseball players. Achievement goal theory provides the framework for this PST program. Creating a task-oriented motivational climate …
