Passing Crisis And Emergency Risk Communications: The Effects Of Communication Channel, Information Type, And Repetition., Judy Edworthy, Elizabeth Hellier, Lex Newbold, Kirsteen Titchener

Three experiments explore several factors which influence information transmission when warning messages are passed from person to person. In Experiment 1, messages were passed down chains of participants using five different modes of communication. Written communication channels resulted in more accurate message transmission than verbal. In addition, some elements of the message endured further down the chain than others. Experiment 2 largely replicated these effects and also demonstrated that simple repetition of a message eliminated differences between written and spoken communication. In a final field experiment, chains of participants passed information however they wanted to, with the proviso that half …

A Neural Reward Prediction Error Revealed By A Meta-Analysis Of Erps Using Great Grand Averages., Thomas D. Sambrook, Jeremy Goslin

School of Psychology

Economic approaches to decision making assume that people attach values to prospective goods and act to maximize their obtained value. Neuroeconomics strives to observe these values directly in the brain. A widely used valuation term in formal learning and decision-making models is the reward prediction error: the value of an outcome relative to its expected value. An influential theory (Holroyd & Coles, 2002) claims that an electrophysiological component, feedback related negativity (FRN), codes a reward prediction error in the human brain. Such a component should be sensitive to both the prior likelihood of reward and its magnitude on receipt. A …

A Qualitative Study Of The Impact Of Severe Asthma And Its Treatment Showing That Treatment Burden Is Neglected In Existing Asthma Assessment Scales., Michael E. Hyland, Ben Whalley, Rupert C. Jones, Matthew Masoli Jan 2015

A Qualitative Study Of The Impact Of Severe Asthma And Its Treatment Showing That Treatment Burden Is Neglected In Existing Asthma Assessment Scales., Michael E. Hyland, Ben Whalley, Rupert C. Jones, Matthew Masoli

School of Psychology

BACKGROUND: People with severe asthma experience significant respiratory symptoms and suffer adverse effects of oral corticosteroids (OCS), including disturbed mood and physical symptoms. OCS impacts on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) have not been quantified. Asthma HRQoL scales are valid as outcome measures for patients requiring OCS only if they assess the deficits imposed by OCS. AIMS: The aim of this study was to compare the burden of disease and treatment in patients with severe asthma with items in eight asthma-specific HRQoL scales. METHODS: Twenty-three patients with severe asthma recruited from a severe asthma clinic were interviewed about the impact …

Adverse Childhood Experience And Asthma Onset: A Systematic Review, Daniel Exley, Alyson Norman, Michael Hyland Jan 2015

Adverse Childhood Experience And Asthma Onset: A Systematic Review, Daniel Exley, Alyson Norman, Michael Hyland

School of Psychology

Adverse childhood experiences such as abuse and neglect are associated with subsequent immune dysregulation. Some studies show an association between adverse childhood experiences and asthma onset, although significant disparity in results exists in the published literature. We aimed to review available studies employing a prospective design that investigates associations between adverse childhood experience and asthma. A search protocol was developed and studies were drawn from four electronic journal databases. Studies were selected in accordance with pre-set inclusion criteria and relevant data were extracted.12 studies, assessing data from a total of 31 524 individuals, were identified that investigate the impact of a …

3d Fea Modelling Of Laminated Composites In Bending And Their Failure Mechanisms, M. Meng, H. R. Le, M. J. Rizvi, S. M. Grove

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Abstract This paper developed three-dimensional (3D) Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to investigate the effect of fibre lay-up on the initiation of failure of laminated composites in bending. Tsai-Hill failure criterion was applied to identify the critical areas of failure in composite laminates. In accordance with the 3D FEA, unidirectional ([0]16), cross-ply ([0/90]4s) and angle-ply ([±45]4s) laminates made up of pre-preg Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) composites were manufactured and tested under three-point bending. The basic principles of Classical Laminate Theory (CLT) were extended to three-dimension, and the analytical solution was critically compared with the FEA results. The 3D FEA results …

The Fake Bad Scale: Malingering Or Litigation Response Syndrome -- Which Is It?, David S. Nichols, Carlton S. Gass Jan 2015

The Fake Bad Scale: Malingering Or Litigation Response Syndrome -- Which Is It?, David S. Nichols, Carlton S. Gass

Archives of Assessment Psychology

This report examines the similarity of items on the MMPI-2 and MMPI-2-RF versions of the Lees-Haley, et al. (1991) Symptom Validity (formerly Fake Bad) Scale (FBS; FBS-r) with emotional and somatic symptoms described in an earlier article by Lees-Haley as credible stress reactions to litigation involvement: the Litigation Response Syndrome (Lees-Haley, 1988). Substantial overlap was found between the FBS items and these earlier symptom descriptions, with a majority of the litigation-based stress items found on both the FBS and FBS-r. The probable impact of credible symptom reporting on FBS/FBS-r scores in personal injury litigation is discussed.

A New Characterization Of Fine Scale Diffusion On The Cell Membrane, Flor A. Espinoza, Stanly L. Steinberg Jan 2015

A New Characterization Of Fine Scale Diffusion On The Cell Membrane, Flor A. Espinoza, Stanly L. Steinberg

Faculty Articles

We use a large single particle tracking data set to analyze the short time and small spatial scale motion of quantum dots labeling proteins in cell membranes. Our analysis focuses on the jumps which are the changes in the position of the quantum dots between frames in a movie of their motion. Previously we have shown that the directions of the jumps are uniformly distributed and the jump lengths can be characterized by a double power law distribution. Here we show that the jumps over a small number of time steps can be described by scalings of a single double …

Millennial-Scale Variability In The Indian Monsoon And Links To Ocean Circulation, Kimberly Anne Delong Jan 2015

Millennial-Scale Variability In The Indian Monsoon And Links To Ocean Circulation, Kimberly Anne Delong

Master's Theses and Capstones

Millennial-scale variability in the Indian monsoon was temporally linked to changes in global ocean circulation during the last glacial period, as evidenced by planktic-benthic foraminiferal stable isotope and trace element results from an intermediate depth sediment core from the northwestern Bay of Bengal (Core NGHP-01-19B; 18°58'N, 85°39'E; 1,422 m). Paired planktic foraminiferal Mg/Ca and d18Oc of G. ruber constrain sea surface temperatures and isolate millennial-scale variations in the d18O of surface waters (d18Osw) which resulted from changes in river runoff in the northwestern Bay. Concurrently with low d18Osw events, benthic foraminiferal d13C of Cibicidoides spp. decreased, suggesting an increased influence …

Separations Of Wealth: Inequality And The Erosion Of Checks And Balances, Kate Andrias Jan 2015

Separations Of Wealth: Inequality And The Erosion Of Checks And Balances, Kate Andrias

Faculty Scholarship

American government is dysfunctional: Gridlock, filibusters, and expanding presidential power, everyone seems to agree, threaten our basic system of constitutional governance. Who, or what, is to blame? In the standard account, the fault lies with the increasing polarization of our political parties. That standard story, however, ignores an important culprit: Concentrated wealth and its organization to achieve political ends. The only way to understand our current constitutional predicament – and to rectify it – is to pay more attention to the role that organized wealth plays in our system of checks and balances.

This Article shows that the increasing concentration …
