Versatility Of N-Peptidyl And N-Glycopeptidyl Nitroindolines For The Formation Of Peptide/Glycopeptide Acids, Amides, And Thioesters, Luis Alfonso Barrera

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

N-acyl-7-nitroindolines are photoreactive compounds that are known to acylate a number of nucleophiles in inert aprotic solvents under neutral conditions when illuminated at 350 nm. We have assembled a MUC1-derived peptide and Tn or STn-containing MUC1 glycopeptides with a C-terminal photoreactive 7-nitroindoline linker attached to Sieber amide resin by solid phase peptide synThesis using the Fmoc strategy. This type of construction allows for the cleavage of fully protected photoreactive peptides/glycopeptides from the resin with dilute trifluoroacetic acid, or for the direct photorelease of protected peptide/glycopeptide derivatives. Here we demonstrate that N-peptidyl and N-glycopeptidyl 7-nitrindolines can be photochemically converted into their …

The Electoral Costs Of Party Agenda Setting: Why The Hastert Rule Leads To Defeat, Jesse Richman Jan 2015

The Electoral Costs Of Party Agenda Setting: Why The Hastert Rule Leads To Defeat, Jesse Richman

Political Science & Geography Faculty Publications

This study demonstrates that unconditional blocking of bills opposed by a majority of the majority party--as implied by the party cartel model and advocated by former Speaker Dennis Hastert--can produce conditions in which the majority party loses popular support and loses elections. The theoretical analysis and empirical results imply that the use of negative agenda power to block bills is circumscribed by this risk of electoral defeat. As a result, the opportunity for effective negative agenda control is conditional on majority party issue advantage, party polarization, and the distribution of status quo locations. In particular, majority party roll rates should …

Adverse Outcome Pathways Can Drive Non‐Animal Approaches For Safety Assessment, N Burden, F Sewell, Me Andersen, A Boobis, Jk Chipman, Mtd Cronin, Th Hutchinson, I Kimber, M Whelan

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

AbstractAdverse Outcome Pathways (AOPs) provide an opportunity to develop new and more accurate safety assessment processes for drugs and other chemicals, and may ultimately play an important role in regulatory decision making. Not only can the development and application of AOPs pave the way for the development of improved evidence‐based approaches for hazard and risk assessment, there is also the promise of a significant impact on animal welfare, with a reduced reliance on animal‐based methods. The establishment of a useable and coherent knowledge framework under which AOPs will be developed and applied has been a first critical step towards realizing …

The Effects Of Unequal Compressive/Tensile Moduli Of Composites, M. Meng, H. R. Le, M. J. Rizvi, S. M. Grove

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Abstract This paper investigates the effects of unequal compressive and tensile moduli of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites. The basic assumption is based on the statistics that the compressive modulus is a fraction lower than the tensile modulus. Data evaluated by Finite Element Analysis (FEA) model, Classical Laminate Theory (CLT) model, and experiment are used to investigate these effects. The terms of compressive modulus are successfully introduced into the Tsai–Wu failure criterion for the production of failure envelops, into the Classical Beam Theory (CBT) and CLT for the investigation of flexural behaviour as well as the fibre microbuckling model …

Use Of A Seagrass Residency Index To Apportion Commercial Fishery Landing Values And Recreation Fisheries Expenditure To Seagrass Habitat Service., Emma L. Jackson, Siân E. Rees, Catherine Wilding, Martin J. Attrill

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Where they dominate coastlines, seagrass beds are thought to have a fundamental role in maintaining populations of exploited species. Thus, Mediterranean seagrass beds are afforded protection, yet no attempt to determine the contribution of these areas to both commercial fisheries landings and recreational fisheries expenditure has been made. There is evidence that seagrass extent continues to decline, but there is little understanding of the potential impacts of this decline. We used a seagrass residency index, that was trait and evidence based, to estimate the proportion of Mediterranean commercial fishery landings values and recreation fisheries total expenditure that can be attributed …

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

AbstractSubmarine landslide deposits have been mapped around many volcanic islands, but interpretations of their structure, composition, and emplacement are hindered by the challenges of investigating deposits directly. Here we report on detailed observations of four landslide deposits around Montserrat collected by Remotely Operated Vehicles, integrating direct imagery and sampling with sediment core and geophysical data. These complementary approaches enable a more comprehensive view of large‐scale mass‐wasting processes around island‐arc volcanoes than has been achievable previously. The most recent landslide occurred at 11.5–14 ka (Deposit 1; 1.7 km3) and formed a radially spreading hummocky deposit that is morphologically similar to many …

Metals In Boat Paint Fragments From Slipways, Repair Facilities And Abandoned Vessels: An Evaluation Using Field Portable Xrf., Andrew Turner, Sean Comber, Aldous B. Rees, Dimitrios Gkiokas, Kevin Solman

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Paint flaking off abandoned vessels or generated during boat repair is hazardous to human health and wildlife. In this study, a means of screening paint fragments using a field portable-X-ray fluorescence (FP-XRF) spectrometer is described. The technique is capable of delivering rapid, surficial measurements of Ba, Cu, Pb and Zn down to concentrations less than 150 μg g(-1), and Sn and Cr to concentrations of a few hundred μg g(-1). Application of the technique to fragments collected from slipways, yards, hardstandings, abandoned boats and ships undergoing maintenance throughout the EU reveal highly variable concentrations of metals among samples from the …

Visualizing Peripheral Nerve Regeneration By Whole Mount Staining., Xin Peng Dun, David B. Parkinson Jan 2015

Visualizing Peripheral Nerve Regeneration By Whole Mount Staining., Xin Peng Dun, David B. Parkinson

Peninsula Medical School

Peripheral nerve trauma triggers a well characterised sequence of events both proximal and distal to the site of injury. Axons distal to the injury degenerate, Schwann cells convert to a repair supportive phenotype and macrophages enter the nerve to clear myelin and axonal debris. Following these events, axons must regrow through the distal part of the nerve, re-innervate and finally are re-myelinated by Schwann cells. For nerve crush injuries (axonotmesis), in which the integrity of the nerve is maintained, repair may be relatively effective whereas for nerve transection (neurotmesis) repair will likely be very poor as few axons may be …

Neural Network Fault Diagnosis Of A Trolling Motor Based On Feature Reduction Techniques For An Unmanned Surface Vehicle, Wathiq Abed, Sanjay Sharma, Robert Sutton

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

This article presents a novel approach to the diagnosis of unbalanced faults in a trolling motor under stationary operating conditions. The trolling motor being typically of that used as the propulsion system for an unmanned surface vehicle, the diagnosis approach is based on the use of discrete wavelet transforms as a feature extraction tool and a time-delayed neural network for fault classification. The time-delayed neural network classifies between healthy and faulty conditions of the trolling motor by analysing the stator current and vibration. To overcome feature redundancy, which affects diagnosis accuracy, several feature reduction methods have been tested, and the …

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

We propose a new method of detecting radiation reaction effects in the motion of particles subjected to laser pulses of moderate intensity and long duration. The effect becomes sizable for particles that gain almost no energy through the interaction with the laser pulse. Hence, there are regions of parameter space in which radiation reaction is actually the dominant influence on charged particle motion.
