Autonocoin: A Proof-Of-Belief Cryptocurrency, Michael B. Abramowicz Jan 2015

Autonocoin: A Proof-Of-Belief Cryptocurrency, Michael B. Abramowicz

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This paper proposes a self-governing cryptocurrency, dubbed Autonocoin. Cryptocurrency owners play formal tacit coordination games by making investments recorded on the block chain. Such investments represent bets about the focal point resolution of normative issues, such as whether a proposed change to Autonocoin should occur. The game produces a result that resolves the issue. With a typical cryptocurrency, the client software establishes conventions that ultimately lead to the identification of the authoritative block chain. Autonocoin completes a circle by making transactions on the block chain determine the authoritative client software. The distributed consensus mechanism embodied by formal tacit coordination games, …

Peer-To-Peer Law, Built On Bitcoin, Michael B. Abramowicz Jan 2015

Peer-To-Peer Law, Built On Bitcoin, Michael B. Abramowicz

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Bitcoin is a protocol promoted as the first peer-to-peer institution, an alternative to a central bank. The decisions made through this protocol, however, involve no judgment. Could a peer-to-peer protocol underpin an institution that makes normative decisions? Indeed, an extension to the Bitcoin protocol could allow a cryptocurrency to make law. Tacit coordination games, in which players compete to identify consensus issue resolutions, would determine currency ownership. For example, an issue might be whether a cryptocurrency-based trust should disburse funds to a putative beneficiary, and the game’s outcome would resolve the question and result in gains or losses for coordination …

Berkshire's Disintermediation: Buffett's New Managerial Model, Lawrence A. Cunningham Jan 2015

Berkshire's Disintermediation: Buffett's New Managerial Model, Lawrence A. Cunningham

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Berkshire Hathaway, among history’s largest and most successful corporations, shuns middlemen; its chairman, the legendary investor Warren Buffett, excoriates financial intermediaries. The acquisitive conglomerate rarely borrows money, retains brokers, or hires consultants. Its governance is lean, using an advisory board and bucking all forms of corporate bureaucracy. Berkshire’s shareholders also minimize the roles of intermediaries like stockbrokers and stock exchanges by trading little and holding for lengthy periods.

By exploring Berkshire’s antipathy to intermediation, this article supports the view that public policy ought to make considerable room for companies to define their own internal business practices and that more companies …

Cryptoinsurance, Michael B. Abramowicz Jan 2015

Cryptoinsurance, Michael B. Abramowicz

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

The sharing economy has begun to make inroads in finance. Peer-to-peer lending is growing substantially in volume and in academic attention, though it remains less than a rounding error in comparison to more traditional sources of loans. Meanwhile, Congress passed the Jumpstart Our Business Startups ("JOBS") Act, which directed the Securities and Exchange Commission ("SEC") to create regulations allowing crowdfunding in at least some circumstances. The SEC, as of yet, has published only proposed rules, ignoring a congressional deadline, but state regulators have begun to create their own rules for intrastate crowdfunding. Yet, one area of finance has resisted even …

An Adapted Shared Storybook Reading Program Implemented In Inclusive Preschool Classrooms: An Investigation Of Its Use And Effectiveness, Andrea Golloher Jan 2015

An Adapted Shared Storybook Reading Program Implemented In Inclusive Preschool Classrooms: An Investigation Of Its Use And Effectiveness, Andrea Golloher

Faculty Publications

The Pathways to Literacy reading program (Lee, Mims, & Browder, 2011) has been demonstrated to be effective at increasing both engagement and comprehension during shared storybook reading for students with exceptional needs. To date, research on Pathways to Literacy has been limited to students in early elementary school rather than preschool, which is when shared reading is usually emphasized as part of the general education curriculum. In these investigations, the reading program has been administered in one-on-one instructional settings, often in special education classrooms. No existing research has examined the ability of participating students to generalize newly learned skills to …

Why Balanced Regional Development Should Be Replaced By Urban Agglomeration Initiatives In Ireland’S Reconfigured National Spatial And Economic Strategy, Brian Hughes Jan 2015

Why Balanced Regional Development Should Be Replaced By Urban Agglomeration Initiatives In Ireland’S Reconfigured National Spatial And Economic Strategy, Brian Hughes

Other Resources

In 2003, Eoin O Leary of NUIC published the first in what has since become an extensive literature criticising the 2002-2020 National Spatial Strategy’s core ‘distributive’ strategy, that of Balanced Regional Development (BRD). It is therefore disturbing, despite the strategy’s obvious failures and the government’s 2013 withdrawn of this discredited NSS, that some Opposition politicians continue to persist in articulating BRD in a politically opportunistically way, such as was emphasised a number of times by Eamon O’Cuiv T.D. on the Claire Byrne TV Show on RTE 1, Monday 9th March. That programme with its Live Audience, was broadcast immediately after …

Comparison Of The Use Of Gendered Language In Discourse On Christian Theology And Psychology, Chloe Ackerman Jan 2015

Comparison Of The Use Of Gendered Language In Discourse On Christian Theology And Psychology, Chloe Ackerman

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

The English language has historically reflected the sexist principles of Western culture. Common examples include the use of sexist pronouns and nouns such as policeman, businessman, or servicemen to represent men and women. Research in the last 50 years revealed the detrimental effects of sexist language, and the English language was accordingly altered. However, sexist language is still used colloquially and in settings such as Christian theology. This study explored differences in the use of gender language between the discourse on Christian theology and psychology, and tested a method of promoting inclusive gender language in Christian discourse. One hundred thirty-nine …

An Evaluation Of Behavioral Skills Training To Teach Assertiveness Skills To College Students, Savannah Warrington Jan 2015

An Evaluation Of Behavioral Skills Training To Teach Assertiveness Skills To College Students, Savannah Warrington

All Master's Theses

Assertiveness skills are related to a variety of life factors including stress levels, social relationships, social fears, and anxiety. The previous research has shown that engaging in nonassertive behavior can have negative effects, and assertive behaviors can lead to a healthier life (Eldeeb, Enstar, & Eldosoky, 2014; Elliot & Gramling, 1990; Larijani, Aghajanie, Baheiraei, & Neiestanank, 2010; Morgan, 1974). The purpose of the current research was to determine if behavioral skills training (BST) was effective in teaching assertiveness skills to college students and if the skills would generalize to novel situations. BST is a method for teaching skills that uses …

Anarchist Strategy And Visual Rhetoric In Brazil, 1970: The Living Theatre As “The People In The Street”, Chelsea R. Roberts Jan 2015

Anarchist Strategy And Visual Rhetoric In Brazil, 1970: The Living Theatre As “The People In The Street”, Chelsea R. Roberts

All Master's Theses

The dominant narrative of the Living Theatre, an anarchist-pacifist, activist performance group, situates the company within a historical framework of the "New Left". Implications of this strategy are identified and critiqued. Both due to the simplification of historical time periods between the fields of theatre and politics, or "periodization" (Postlewait), and because of the ways in which the "New Left" is identified as overtly American in much theatre scholarship, historicizing the Living Theatre as "in-line" with the New Left has resulted in the erasure of the Living Theatre's founding philosophies of anarchism and pacifism. The visual implications of these findings …

The Nature Of A Parent-Subsidiary Relationship Determines How To Allocate A Refund In A Tax Sharing Agreement, Samuel Cushner Jan 2015

The Nature Of A Parent-Subsidiary Relationship Determines How To Allocate A Refund In A Tax Sharing Agreement, Samuel Cushner

Bankruptcy Research Library

(Excerpt)

Often, a parent corporation and its subsidiaries will file a consolidated tax return because it comes with many benefits, such as being able to offset gains and losses and deferring tax consequences for sales between consolidated groups. The parent corporation and the subsidiaries will often enter into a tax sharing agreement, which will determine each entity’s respective tax liability. In the event that a refund is issued, the tax sharing agreement will usually dictate how to allocate the refund amongst the parent and the subsidiaries.

A tax sharing agreement is “an agreement among members of an affiliated group of …

Second Circuit Sets A Low Bar For Foreign Debtors Seeking Chapter 15 Relief, Samantha Ruppenthal Jan 2015

Second Circuit Sets A Low Bar For Foreign Debtors Seeking Chapter 15 Relief, Samantha Ruppenthal

Bankruptcy Research Library

(Excerpt)

Continued globalization of trade and investment led Congress, through the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act (“BAPCPA”), to amend the Bankruptcy Code (“the Code”) in 2005 to include chapter 15. Chapter 15 adopted UNCITRAL’s Model Law on Cross-Border Insolvency —both aim to guide parties through cross-border insolvency proceedings. In addition to the policy objectives for all bankruptcies, chapter 15 specifically aspires to foster cooperation between the United States and foreign countries involved in cross-border insolvency cases and promote greater legal certainty in global trade and investment. A chapter 15 case is generally meant to supplement the plenary case …

Teaching Green Chemistry Principles To Undergraduate Students, Mariya Rozov, Tyler K. Brescia, Lyanne Valdez, Rita K. Upmacis

Faculty Papers and Publications

The environment is affected by the actions of mankind in multitudinous ways, many of which are detrimental, giving rise to pollution and toxic waste, ultimately making our planet less inhabitable. While remediation and new regulations help to prevent pollution and toxic waste, there is also a need to change the behavior of future generations of consumers and producers of new products. Future chemists and innovators are charged with the responsibility of developing new chemical processes and products that not only meet the needs of our growing population (in terms of energy, clean water and food), but also protect human health …
