The Impact Of Technology-Enhanced Learning Activities On Nursing Student Engagement In The Classroom, Alicia A. Stone Nov 2015

The Impact Of Technology-Enhanced Learning Activities On Nursing Student Engagement In The Classroom, Alicia A. Stone

Theses & Dissertations

Educating student nurses in the present environment requires professors to stay current with new methodologies as well as innovations in technology. The question is how to address both the impact of technology and the skills of clinical reasoning, and keep the students involved in the material. If there can be integration of each aspect through the use of technology-enhanced learning activities on the internet and preparation to approach the issue, then perhaps this can increase success. This is a quasi-experimental intervention study that explored the impact of a case study blogging assignment on the engagement of students enrolled in a …

The Impact Of Pedagogical Agents' Conversational Formality On Learning And Learner Impressions, Haiying Li Nov 2015

The Impact Of Pedagogical Agents' Conversational Formality On Learning And Learner Impressions, Haiying Li

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The dissertation examined the impact of agents' conversational formality on the learning of summarization skills and learner impressions in an intelligent tutoring system (ITS) with trialogues (a teacher agent, a student agent, and a human learner). Formal language is in the informational genre (as opposed to narrative) and increases with word abstractness, syntactic complexity, referential cohesion, and deep cohesion. At the other end of the continuum, informal discourse tends to have concrete words, simple syntax, low cohesion (because knowledge-based inferences can fill the gaps), and high narrativity. There have been no experimental investigations that have maniputed teacher language because it …

Molecular Role Of Dab2ip Gtpase Activating Protein In Brain Development, Farimah Salami Nov 2015

Molecular Role Of Dab2ip Gtpase Activating Protein In Brain Development, Farimah Salami

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Dab2ip is the member of Ras GTPase activating protein family that interacts with Disabled-1/2 famlily proteins, which play a critical role in brain development. Dab2ip is mainly known as a tumor suppressor, however recent studies have shown that it has important functions in the mammalian brain. In this study, using bioinformatics and experimental techniques, I characterized the mouse Dab2ip gene structure. Unlike previous reports, I found that the mouse Dab2ip gene has 20 exons and 3 CpG islands. I identified three transcript variants of Dab2ip which starts from exon one. Alternative splicing at the 5' end of these transcripts result …

1,3-Dimethylamylamine (1,3-DMAA) is a stimulant commercially sold in a variety of dietary supplements as a chemical species derived from geranium plants (Pelargonium graveolens). Whether 1,3-DMAA naturally occurs in geranium plants or other dietary ingredients, it has important regulatory and commercial ramifications. An extraction method combined with HPLC-MS/MS is used to determine 1,3-DMAA and 1,4-dimethylamylamine (1,4-DMAA) concentrations in geranium plants with both external calibration and standard addition methods. Samples from the Changzhou, Kunming, and Guiyang regions of China during both winter and summer were analyzed. Following the detection of DMAA in the Changzhou sample, an extraction and pre-column, chiral derivatization chemistry …

Recharge Pathways And Mechanisms To The Memphis Aquifer, John Michael Bursi Nov 2015

Recharge Pathways And Mechanisms To The Memphis Aquifer, John Michael Bursi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

As the primary source of water for Memphis, Tennessee and surrounding areas, the Memphis aquifer is an important natural resource. Recharge to the Memphis aquifer, which is thought to occur by infiltration of precipitation in the exposure belt, is impeded by Quaternary loess and paleosols on the upland surfaces. This study investigated whether incised stream gullies provide a faster rate of infiltration, and potential recharge, relative to the upland surfaces. Through a year of monitoring of physical hydrology and water chemistry within a watershed at the Pinecrest research site, located in Fayette County, Tennessee, along with the implementation of environmental …

Living Your Best Life: Identities Of Televangelist Joel Osteen And His Imagined Audience, Reginald Bell Jr. Nov 2015

Living Your Best Life: Identities Of Televangelist Joel Osteen And His Imagined Audience, Reginald Bell Jr.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

How does one analyze the impact of televangelist Joel Osteen? Attempts have been made to answer this question primarily from a theological perspective and occassionally from cultural and media perspectives. Though these analytical lenses have provided some limited insight into Osteen, his rise to prominence, and the growth of his ministry, none has sufficiently addressed or critcally analyzed Osteen's discursive artistry. Utilizing important analytical principles and research tools from the field of Communication, this dissertation provides three new critical lenses: first persona, second persona, and third persona. These lenses will help televangelist studies uncover the artistry and compliexity of how …

The Source Of Saline Groundwater In The Mississippi River Valley Alluvial Aquifer In Southeast Arkansas, Justin Michael Paul Nov 2015

The Source Of Saline Groundwater In The Mississippi River Valley Alluvial Aquifer In Southeast Arkansas, Justin Michael Paul

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

In this study, the source of historical chloride anomalies in the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer from southeast Arkansas is investigated using spatial statistical and geochemical techniques. The spatial statistical and geochemical techniques are employed to determine whether the source of the saline groundwater is due to evaporative processes in the soil column, injection of saline fluids from depth, or infiltration from rivers. Spatial statistical analyses show chloride anomalies in the alluvial aquifer are more closely related to tectonic features associated with the injection of saline fluids from depth than evaporative concentration of soil waters that may have recharged groundwater. …

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Objectives: This study aimed to examine the association of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) gene polymorphisms with body mass index (BMI) in hypertensive North Indians. Methods: This case-control study was carried out between May 2013 and November 2014 at the Era’s Lucknow Medical College & Hospital, Lucknow, India, and included 378 subjects divided into three groups. One group constituted 253 hypertensive individuals (sustained diastolic blood pressure of >90 mmHg and systolic blood pressure of >140 mmHg) who were subcategorised according to normal (<25 kg/m2) or high (≥25 kg/m2) BMI. The third group consisted of 125 age-, gender- and ethnically-matched normotensive controls with a normal BMI. Gene polymorphisms were evaluated by polymerase chain reaction. The genotypic and allelic frequency distribution among both groups were analysed. Results: A significant difference was found between GST theta 1-null and GST mu 1-positive genotype frequencies among the hypertensive overweight/obese individuals and controls (P = 0.014 and 0.033, respectively). However, no difference was observed in the frequency of ACE polymorphisms. ACE insertion/insertion genotype (P = 0.006), insertion and deletion alleles (P = 0.007 each) and GST theta 1-null and GST theta 1-positive genotypes (P = 0.006 each) were found to differ significantly between hypertensive cases and controls, regardless of BMI. Conclusion: ACE and GST gene polymorphisms were not associated with BMI but were significantly associated with hypertension among the studied group of North Indians.

Applications Of High Performance Affinity Chromatography With High Capacity Stationary Phases Made By Entrapment, John A. Vargas Badilla

Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

High performance affinity chromatography (HPAC) is a technique that uses a biologically-related agent such as a transport protein or an antibody as the stationary phase in an HPLC system. In recent years, HPAC has been shown to be a valuable bioanalytical tool for studying solute-protein interactions. Human serum albumin (HSA), the most abundant protein in blood (with concentrations of 35 to 50 mg/mL in serum), has been shown to interact with many drugs, affecting their transport, excretion and metabolism. A physical method for immobilizing proteins in HPAC supports has been optimized in this dissertation by using HSA as a model …
