Aprosodia Therapy: The Impact On Affective Prosody In A Child With High Functioning Autism, Andria Hutchison
Aprosodia Therapy: The Impact On Affective Prosody In A Child With High Functioning Autism, Andria Hutchison
Student Theses and Dissertations
Aprosodia, a disorder that results from damage to the right hemisphere of the brain, affects a person’s ability to comprehend and/or express emotion through changes in voice, or prosody. A common characteristic in children with High Functioning Autism (HFA) is a flat, monotonous voice that affects social reciprocity and communicative competence. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the effects of the imitative approach, established for adults with aprosodia due to right hemisphere damage, on the affective prosodic skills in a child with HFA. A within subject research design was selected, and one participant received the imitative intervention …

Livestock Production, Climate Change, And Human Health: Closing The Awareness Gap, Debra L. L. Donahue
Livestock Production, Climate Change, And Human Health: Closing The Awareness Gap, Debra L. L. Donahue
Faculty Articles
Livestock should be removed from public lands for myriad reasons Eliminating what is now extensive grazing by ruminants would cut methane emissions with attendant benefits for climate mitigation Removing livestock from public lands also mirrors federal nutrition policy particularly the recommendation to eat less red meat Much of the degraded environmental conditions on public lands and waters caused by ruminant grazing would end thereby enabling improvement or even recovery Finally undertaking this policy shift would make fiscal sense by saving taxpayer dollars

Our students consistently hand in assignments late, or complete them at the last minute. Why is it that they know about assignments all term long yet only begin them the night before the assignment is due? Based on a career-focused learning community at Kingsborough Community College of the City University of New York, this article looks at ways to help our “millennial” students develop better time management skills. It shows how time management and prioritizing can be introduced as a tool for success in college and life and offers suggestions to better engage students in getting assignments done in a …
Analysis Of Factors Affecting The Stability Of Cooperative Banks In The Post-Crisis Period, Krzysztof Kil, Ewa Miklaszewska
Analysis Of Factors Affecting The Stability Of Cooperative Banks In The Post-Crisis Period, Krzysztof Kil, Ewa Miklaszewska
European Management Studies
In many countries, including Poland, cooperative banks have survived the global financial crisis relatively well. However, many empirical studies conducted in the post-crisis period have indicated that it could be a short-term advantage, associated with a traditional business model, rather than the long-term trend of cooperative banks’ stabilizing impact on the banking sector. This problem is particularly important for the credit market, as cooperative banks are an important vehicle in financing local businesses. The article therefore aims at answering this question by analyzing factors affecting stability of cooperative banks in the period 2010–2013, as measured by the Z-score index, the …

Monopsony Exploitation In Professional Sport: Evidence From Major League Baseball Position Players, 2000-2011, Brad R. Humphreys, Hyunwoong Pyun
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
Some professional athletes still face monoposony power in labor markets, underscoring the importance of estimating players' marginal revenue product (MRP) to assess its effects. We introduce two new empirical approaches, spline revenue functions and fixed-effects stochastic production functions, into the standard Scully (1974) approach to MRP estimation, and calculate Monoposony Exploitation Ratios (MERs) for position players in Major League Baseball over the 2001-2011 seasons. Estimates indicate that MERs are about 0.89 for rookie players, 0.75 for arbitration eligible players, and 0.21 for free agents. Recent collective bargaining agreements have reduced MERs for free agents, but had no effect on MERs …

Probabilistic Aspects Of Risk Management, Mirosław Szreder
European Management Studies
The author considers reasons for the applications of particular interpretations of probability in dynamic reality. He also justifies difficulties with the use of classical and frequency interpretations in many practical cases. Risk management may require appealing to experts' opinions and implementing the personal (subjective) interpretation of probability developed by T. Bayes and L. Savage. The last part of the paper discusses controversies raised by those interpretations, and presents ways of combining experts' evaluations of probability.

Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov State Of Two-Dimensional Imbalanced Fermi Gases, Daniel E. Sheehy
Faculty Publications
The ground-state phase diagram of attractively interacting Fermi gases in two dimensions with a population imbalance is investigated. We find the regime of stability for the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase, in which pairing occurs at a finite wave vector, and determine the magnitude of the pairing amplitude Δ and FFLO wave vector q in the ordered phase, finding that Δ can be of the order of the two-body binding energy. Our results rely on a careful analysis of the zero-temperature gap equation for the FFLO state, which possesses nonanalyticities as a function of Δ and q, invalidating a Ginzburg-Landau expansion in …

The District Court correctly determined that Phoenix failed to state a trademark claim because Basket Case’s activities cannot have caused any relevant confusion.1 Phoenix’s fundamental complaint is about unauthorized use of its intangible content—karaoke tracks. Under Dastar v. Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp., 539 U.S. 23 (2003), however, only confusion regarding the source of physical goods is actionable under the Lanham Act; confusion regarding the source of the karaoke tracks or their authorization is not actionable. Phoenix cannot avoid Dastar just because Basket Case creates digital copies of those tracks, as Basket Case does not sell digital files or …

An Empirical Evaluation Of Predictive Models Of Programmer Navigation, Alka Rani Singh
An Empirical Evaluation Of Predictive Models Of Programmer Navigation, Alka Rani Singh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The process of software development consists of many activities, such as writing code, debugging, and navigating through code. Navigating through the code to understand or seek information for developing new code is a very time consuming and tedious task. Many tools are developed based on predictive models to help programmers in navigation. These models predict the fragments of code which might be of developer’s interest. There have been studies for comparing these models to determine their predictive accuracy. However, the models are often based on crude approximations of where a developer’s attention is. For example, prior work has both where …

“¡Ya Entiendo! Now I Understand!” Parents' Perceptions Of The Diagnosis Process And Early Intervention Services, Jenna Hudson
“¡Ya Entiendo! Now I Understand!” Parents' Perceptions Of The Diagnosis Process And Early Intervention Services, Jenna Hudson
Doctor of Education in Teacher Leadership Dissertations
This qualitative research study examined parents’ perceptions on the diagnosis process that identified their children as deaf or hard of hearing and the early-intervention services provided after the diagnosis. It explored how culture influenced the parental perception of information given to them and the ways in which their backgrounds swayed their individual reactions. As a convenience sample, the researcher conducted interviews with six families in the participants’ homes for ease and comfort. After each interview, an observation was conducted to collect data on the family’s interactions during leisure time, focusing on how the parents and their child communicated with one …

The Water Cycle Boogie: Clean Water Act Jurisdiction, Home Rule, And Water Law, Colin W. Maguire
Et Cetera
The EPA and US Army Corps of Engineers’ agency rule regarding the definition of “Waters of the United States” under the Clean Water Act increased jurisdictional assertions by as much as 5%. What’s the big deal? This violates the Home Rule of state and local governments. This violation also creates concerns where many property owners are not sure if they need federal permits to develop land under the Clean Water Act. With issues like this new Clean Water Act rule, the drought conditions in the Western U.S., and international concerns regarding fresh water, water law is a critical area which …

Neighbors Building Community - A Community Empowerment Initiative Through Community Mapping, Mark J. Salling
All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications
Cleveland State University’s Office of Civic Engagement, through an Engaged Learning Enhancement Grant, funded a pilot demonstration project to evaluate the use of community mapping for assisting with community assessments of neighborhood issues in a west side neighborhood of Cleveland. The project used neighborhood residents to collect and map data on a variety of neighborhood issues, specifically dilapidated buildings, potentially dangerous dogs, pot holes, broken sidewalks, offensive graffiti, trash in vacant lots, dead trees, and more.
The pilot project educated the participants about neighborhood issues, while providing the community with documentation on issues that can be presented to council representatives …
