Side-Chain Boron Difluoride Formazanate Polymers Via Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization, Samantha Novoa, Joseph A. Paquette, Stephanie M. Barbon, Ryan R. Maar, Joe Gilroy
Chemistry Publications
The synthesis, characterization, and ring-opening methathesis polymerization (ROMP) of a novel norbornene-based boron difluoride (BF2) formazante monomer are described in detail. The polymerization studies confirmed ROMP to occur in the presence of BF2 formazanates, and also demonstrated the controlled nature of the polymerization. The polymers retained many of the unique characteristics of the monomers in dichloromethane, including absorption and emission at maximum wavelengths of 518 and 645 nm, large Stoke's shifts (uST = 127 nm, 3,800 cm-1), and the ability to act as electron reservoirs to form borataverdazyl-based poly(radical anions) (E°red1 …
The Job Of Human Capital: What Occupational Data Reveal About Skill Sets, Economic Growth And Regional Competitiveness, Lillian Frances Stewart
The Job Of Human Capital: What Occupational Data Reveal About Skill Sets, Economic Growth And Regional Competitiveness, Lillian Frances Stewart
ETD Archive
A region's workforce has been described as its greatest asset. Guided by human capital theory and new growth theory, regions have pursued economic development policies to increase the number of college-educated workers and expand the pool of STEM -- science, technology, engineering, and math -- talent. Academic literature and policy interventions have focused on a region's human capital in terms of educational attainment instead of a more fine-grained definition of human capital based on skills and competencies. This dissertation integrates economic and business theory and combines three federal databases to explore regional human capital assets. Findings suggest that policymakers may …

Hong Kong Happiness Index

Using A New Evidence-Based Health Workforce Innovation Research Framework To Compare Innovations In Community Health Center And Other Ambulatory Care Settings, Leah E. Masselink, Patricia Pittman, Claire Houterman
Health Workforce Research Center Publications
In the United States, changing demographics, rising costs, and the impact of new regulations and payment models arising from the Affordable Care Act have placed unprecedented pressures on healthcare providers to increase access to care, improve quality and to control costs. To meet these challenges, some providers are forming accountable care organizations (ACOs) while others are pursuing medical homes or other novel payment and care delivery models designed to help meet these challenges. Within established organizations such as federally funded community health centers (CHCs), healthcare leaders are exercising significant latitude in developing innovative solutions for meeting their patients’ needs more …

Systemic Risk Management. Cognitive Perspective, Jan K Solarz
Systemic Risk Management. Cognitive Perspective, Jan K Solarz
European Management Studies
This article argues that in order to manage systemic risk, we need more sophisticated and realistic cognitive framework through which to analyse its dynamics and costs. We used macroprudential and microprudential policy to manage explicit systemic risk. Systemic risk is a propagation risk, where shocks spread in time and across sectors. Whilst there are no easy answers, employing this conception of systemic risk management provides an alternative cognitive framework. The narrative approach developed in this article has two dimensions: theoretical tradition in economics (political economics, mathematical economics, institutional economics) and key concepts (rent-seeking, external costs, complexity, nano-finance). To that end, …
The Phenomenon Of Excessive Procyclicality Of The Financial Sector From The Perspective Of Macroprudential Policy – Sources, Methods Of Reduction And Their Basic Limitations, Małgorzata Olszak
European Management Studies
This article presents explanations of the procyclicality phenonomenon with the application of the theory of market failures and behavioral finance. This analysis shows that the most important failures include: externalities of strategic complementarities (the classical herding phenomenon), fire sale externalities (i.e. asset prices spirals); network externalities (i.e. contagion risk). The theory of market failures does not say the whole story about the procyclicality phenomenon. To get a fuller picture of procyclicality one has to resort to behavioral finance, i.e. availability heuristics and threshold heuristics. The analysis also focuses on macroprudential instruments in their potential to affect financial cycle and soundness …
The Impact Of The New Resolution Regime On Public Support To Banks, Agnieszka Trzcińska
The Impact Of The New Resolution Regime On Public Support To Banks, Agnieszka Trzcińska
European Management Studies
Public support provided to banks during the crisis has incentivised reforms at EU level which aim at limiting costs of banks’ failures incurred by taxpayers. In this context, a resolution framework was agreed and the Single Resolution Mechanism was established. The latter will operate within the banking union, i.e. currently the euro area. This paper focuses on new burden-sharing rules for banks and their impact on the need for mobilising budgetary resources for banks under resolution, in particular the need for public capital injections to ailing financial institutions. To this end, it identifies circumstances in which public support may be …
The Stability Of Bank Deposits Of Communes In Poland, Paweł Galiński
The Stability Of Bank Deposits Of Communes In Poland, Paweł Galiński
European Management Studies
The aim of the article is to characterize the stability of bank deposits of each type of the communes in Poland as well as the main determinants of their value. The research time range covers the period 2008–2014. In this period, some legal and financial determinants of deposit activity of these units appeared. The activity of the communes in this field simultaneously influences the stability of sources of funding of banks, which include deposits of these entities. This especially concerns cooperative banks, which are natural clients for rural communes and urban-rural communes, as units from the public finance sector in …
Modelling Time To Default Or Early Repayment As Competing Risks, Ewa Wycinka
Modelling Time To Default Or Early Repayment As Competing Risks, Ewa Wycinka
European Management Studies
Early repayment and default are two basic perils causing credit termination. Who of the borrowers and when are at the risk of both events is important information for the creditor. The article employs some of the estimators of the method of competing risks to model time to default or early repayment. The empirical part of the article consists of the results of the study on the sample of 5000 five-year loans that were observed for 24 months. Probabilities of default and early repayment have been evaluated by means of selected estimators. These estimators are also suitable for distinguishing borrowers with …
Cross-Currency Interest Rate Swap In The Context Of The Calculation Of Capital Adequacy Of Banks With Foreign Currency Mortgages, Jan Koleśnik
European Management Studies
Polish banks have a large long currency position resulting from the portfolio of foreign currency mortgages, which they secure mainly using FX swaps and cross-currency interest rate swaps (CIRS). The purpose of this paper is to show how to take CIRS, which is one of the most popular methods of hedging against risk of CHF mortgages, into account in the calculation of capital adequacy. The paper also tries to answer the question whether the conversion of foreign currency mortgages will lead to changes in the treatment of CIRS in the calculation of capital adequacy of banks. The author points out …
Feedbacks And Systematic Risk Of Denominated Debt In Poland, Ireneusz Dąbrowski
Feedbacks And Systematic Risk Of Denominated Debt In Poland, Ireneusz Dąbrowski
European Management Studies
On January 15th 2015, when the Swiss National Bank (SNB) suddenly announced that it would no longer hold the Swiss franc at a fixed exchange rate with the euro, there was panic. The franc soared, which drastically affected the cost of loans taken out in francs. Poland is in the second place in the European Union in terms of outstanding loans in that currency. At the end of January 2015 housing loans in CHF in Poland were valued at 149.6 billion zlotys (PLN). The problem of turbulence arising from foreign currency loans and loans denominated in foreign currencies is multi-layered …
Financial Risk In Polish Companies During The Global Economic Crisis Of 2007–2008 With Particular Emphasis On Evaluation Of The Use Of Reserve Debt Capacity, Wiktor Cwynar, Anna Ostrowska-Dankiewicz, Piotr Oratowski
European Management Studies
The article presents research findings on capital structure and financial risk changes in Polish companies during the global economic crisis of 2007–2008. Authors evaluated financial data for 4188 companies, both listed and unlisted within particular sectors. The whole population of companies was split into two parts based on the average value of the debt ratio calculated for pre-crisis years (2005–2007). The first group was composed of companies with average debt ratio below industry norm expressed in sector mean value of the debt ratio. These companies were assumed to have reserve debt capacity. The second group consisted of companies with average …
Recovery And Resolution – New Mechanisms For Systemic Risk Management In The Insurance Sector, Teresa Czerwińska
Recovery And Resolution – New Mechanisms For Systemic Risk Management In The Insurance Sector, Teresa Czerwińska
European Management Studies
The new regulatory and institutional trends in the financial sector are a response to the recent crisis. The need for public intervention and the mobilization of public funds to cover the mass losses of private entities have changed the point of view of regulators, supervisory authorities and public opinion. Firstly, stability has become by far the fundamental value of the financial system, much greater than its growth and innovation potential, which is widely reflected not only by the legal regulations. The study analyzes the trends in the systemic risk management in the insurance sector. It presents the characteristics of key …

Southeast Florida Large Coral Assessment 2015, Brian K. Walker, Katelyn Klug
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports
The 2013 nearshore mapping project conducted by Walker and Klug expanded the previous knowledge on the amount, location, and species type of ecologically important large (>2 m) coral colonies in southeast Florida. They discovered over 110 previously undocumented large corals of which 60 were dead and 50 were still alive; 40 of the living corals were larger than 2 m wide and up to 5 m in diameter. Because these corals are the largest and oldest organisms on our reefs, they deserve special attention.
Currently there is unprecedented disease and bleaching in the northern portion of the Florida Reef …
