Machiavelli And Ariosto: Language, Power, And The War Of Words, Rosanne H. Pelletier

Machiavelli and Ariosto, the two contemporary giants and ideological opposites of the Italian Renaissance, diverge on the realm of power’s operation. For Machiavelli, power operates within society; here, one wields power over, or else cedes it to, others. By contrast, for Ariosto the locus of power is one’s own mind, where mighty forces swirl and sometimes overtake the individual from within. Whereas in Machiavelli’s view, power is asserted over others, the Ariostan view posits dizzying internal passions over which the individual is often powerless.

Against such a background, I anatomize two sets of linguistic details, and show that they in …

The implied conclusion is that since the reforms were forced-the connotations of the term make its use questionable, but that is a separate issue-upon the church by the government, and since Edward was a minor, the government being dominated by the dukes of Somerset and Northumberland, Edward himself was therefore a negligible factor in the reforms implemented during his reign.

It is not within the scope of this paper to assess the secular politics or military developments of Edward's reign. What does concern us here is the question of the extent to which Edward was a factor in the development …

At the direction of the Air Sea Battle (ASB) Office, and with the concurrence of the Chief of Naval Operations, Global ’14 continued to focus on the Air-Sea Battle (ASB) Concept. While Global ’12 looked at the war fighting implications associated with concept implementation, Global ’13 and Global ’14 examined the command and control (C2) of cross-domain operations (XDO) in future Anti-Access/Area-Denial (A2/AD) environments. Reconsidering The Notion Of Fortaleza Kuelap, Robert C. Bradley

Kuelap is a large pre-Columbian ruin in northeastern Peru associated with the Late Intermediate Period (900-1470 CE) Chachapoya people. In this text a brief history of the Chachapoya culture is followed by a physical description of the site and its surrounding environment. The colonial record of the Chachapoya and Kuelap is then thoroughly analyzed and the militaristic framing of the site is deconstructed. A plausible history of Kuelap is then presented for the time period after the Inca conquest of the Chachapoya.

This thesis will focus on representations of African women in the British colony of Barbados in the early modern era, using travelers' accounts, planters' records and the writings of abolition-minded reformers. The topic is significant because most scholars have focused on British colonial life during the nineteenth century, examining the planter class or the region's colonial commodities.

Untruthfulness is surprisingly common in the U.S. military even though members of the profession are loath to admit it. Further, much of the deception and dishonesty that occurs in the profession of arms is actually encouraged and sanctioned by the military institution. The end result is a profession whose members often hold and propagate a false sense of integrity that prevents the profession from addressing—or even acknowledging—the duplicity and deceit throughout the formation. The Nordic states in particular are grappling with a 2-decade legacy of defense drawdowns and repositioning for expeditionary warfare.
