Analyzing User Acceptance Of Mobile Technology In Clinical Settings Through Point-Of-Care Mobile Applications, Leanne Elizabeth Loper

All Theses

The advent of mobile phones has led to global connectivity surpassing any global conversation previously known. However, despite having access to this global network through mobile devices and ever expanding internet access, many developing countries still lack basic medical technology. In many resource-poor medical settings, existing monitors used to process and display medical data received from various sensors (temperature, blood oxygen saturation, heart rate, blood pressure, etc.) are either missing or unreliable. Furthermore, these devices are rarely designed with an interface appropriate for the needs of the end user. Additionally, the use of mobile apps for medical purposes is increasing …

Evaluating Local Food-Tourism Linkages As A Strategy For Promoting Sustainable Tourism And Economic Development: A Case For Tanzania, John Thomas Mgonja May 2015

Evaluating Local Food-Tourism Linkages As A Strategy For Promoting Sustainable Tourism And Economic Development: A Case For Tanzania, John Thomas Mgonja

All Dissertations

Tanzania is one of sub-Saharan Africa's most popular and rapidly growing tourism destinations. Despite high economic growth stirred by fast tourism development, the level of poverty and unemployment is still very high. The rapid growth in tourism which translates into economic growth does not appear to have considerably improved local people's income and reduced poverty in the country. Involvement of local people in the ownership of tourism enterprises is viewed as an important tool for promoting sustainable tourism, improving local peoples' income and reducing financial leakage which is caused by importation of goods such as food and drinks from other …

Things Go Wrong. Life Goes On. How Do We Stay Strong? The Path Of Resilience: Processing Trauma Through Learning, Social Emotional Support, And Empowerment, Sarah Gonzales , '15 Apr 2015

Things Go Wrong. Life Goes On. How Do We Stay Strong? The Path Of Resilience: Processing Trauma Through Learning, Social Emotional Support, And Empowerment, Sarah Gonzales , '15

Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards

In this thesis I research how educators and communities can respect the feelings and realities of those experiencing trauma. I look at the ways we can frame learning experiences so that they empower people; allowing them to process their trauma safely and develop resilience. I describe three experiences I have participated in over my time attending Swarthmore College. These separate excerpts are interconnected in the ways that participants entered into an opportunity to constructively process their trauma, with the social emotional support of community members, and were therefore able to become agents of self-advocacy and change.

Vulnerability Of Elderly Women To Witchcraft Accusations Among The Fipa Of Sumbawanga, 1961-2010, Hamisi Mathias Machangu

Journal of International Women's Studies

Witchcraft accusations have led to the killings of elderly women in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa. For many years, the violence has had major effects on people’s health. Witchcraft accusations have been the source of people’s loss of limbs and deaths among elderly women in Africa. Although these problems have had effects on elderly women, there has been very little reconstruction of their history in Tanzania. Thus, the aim of this article is to rewrite the history of the vulnerability of the elderly women to witchcraft accusations among the Fipa of Sumbawanga district of Tanzania.

This article focuses on the …

Vehicle Profile Optimization Using Central Composite Design For Pedestrian Injury Mitigation, V. Kausalyah, S. Shasthri, K. A. Abdullah, M. M. Idres, Q. H. Shah, S. V. Wong

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Pedestrian injury poses a significant problem throughout the world. Pedestrians contribute to the second largest category of motor vehicle deaths accounting for about 13% of fatalities, after occupant injuries. Therefore is vital to design pedestrian friendly vehicles to mitigate injuries and fatalities. A statistical methodology employing the Design of Experiments (DoE) is adopted in this work to obtain the optimum design parameters for the vehicle front end geometry. The work studies the feasibility of the use of Central Composite Designs (CCD) between a Circumscribed design (CCC) and a Faced design (CCF). A total of 100 simulation runs are performed and …

I first met the amazing HeroRATs in 2008 when I was an APOPO deminer detecting landmines in Mozambique. I had been invited to APOPO’s HQ and Training & Research Center in Tanzania and was about to embark on my new career as a Mine Detection Rat Handler. Although I had worked with trained dogs before I was still amazed at the rat’s abilities; their speed and accuracy. The Tanzania team taught me about scent detection theory and technology, as well as animal welfare and veterinary skills. In return I told them about the suffering in my country. At that time, …

Larval Habitat Discrimination By The African Malaria Vector Anopheles Gambiae Sensu Lato: Observations From Standardized Experiments And Field Studies, Herrera-Varela Manuela Jan 2015

Larval Habitat Discrimination By The African Malaria Vector Anopheles Gambiae Sensu Lato: Observations From Standardized Experiments And Field Studies, Herrera-Varela Manuela

All PhD Dissertations

Current malaria vector control strategies in Africa target indoor resting and biting mosquitoes and rely heavily on a small number of insecticides. These interventions have lead to the selection of insecticide resistance, behavioural adaptations of the vectors and leave naturally exophilic species nearly untouched. Gravid Anopheles gambiae s.l. female searching for an oviposition site would be a novel target for vector control. However, little is known about the oviposition-site selection behaviour (criteria) of this mosquito. The major aim of the presented research was to investigate if gravid An. gambiae s.l make informed choices when selecting an oviposition site and to …
