Arts professionals straddle two worlds: the world of the artist and the world of the manager. This course concentrates on the various forms of arts writing, promotion, and institutional communications relevant to the arts administrator. Skills in written and oral communication are developed through a cycle of writings directed towards basic arts and media relations principles and techniques as they apply to successful arts institutions. Students will practice identification of current and potential audiences, how to attract media, create ongoing relationships with visitors and members, as well as successful communication within arts institution administrations.

Lucy Negro, Redux, Caroline Randall Williams

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Lucy Negro, Redux is a collection of poetry that uses the lens of Shakespeare's "Dark Lady" sonnets to explore the way questions about and desire for the black female body have evolved over time, from Elizabethan England to the Jim Crow South to the present day. Research for the collection began with the discovery in early 2012 of a connection between the historical Elizabethan figure Black Luce--a notorious brothel owner--and William Shakespeare, by Professor Duncan Salkeld of the University of Chichester. A grant from the University of Mississippi yielded an opportunity for on-site research with Dr. Salkeld in order to …

Lists In A Lighthouse, James Patrick Costello Jan 2015

Lists In A Lighthouse, James Patrick Costello

Theses and Dissertations

In this document one will find the play, Lists in a Lighthouse, and a description of the process it took to write it. It’s significance lie in the eyes of the reader. It could range from: the greatest play written in the English speaking world to simply words on a page. Like this Abstract so are the contents in this manuscript, abstract. One cannot quantify or qualify its importance. That is impossible. It is merely a dialogue. A dialogue between the play and its reader, the play and its actors, and the play and its audience. It is a process, …

The Impact Of Supervisor-Subordinate Exchange On State Government Employees, Jeffrey R. Zimmerman Jan 2015

The Impact Of Supervisor-Subordinate Exchange On State Government Employees, Jeffrey R. Zimmerman

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Interactions such as task assignments and communications between supervisors and subordinates have unintended negative consequences on subordinates such as alienation of subordinates that are not members of the 'in' group. These relations are determined by the quality of the leader-member exchange (LMX) between supervisor and subordinate. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of supervisor-subordinate exchange on state government employees by understanding the essence of these exchanges in state government agencies. The theoretical foundation of this phenomenological study was Graen and Uhl-Bien's conceptualization of LMX. Data were collected through 12 semi structured interviews with subordinates from the …

Making The Fictional Believable: Mock Documentary Imagery In The War Game, Abigail E. Jones Jan 2015

Making The Fictional Believable: Mock Documentary Imagery In The War Game, Abigail E. Jones

Undergraduate Research Journal

One particular mock documentary film that exemplifies imagery’s ability to help viewers suspend disbelief is Peter Watkins’ The War Game (1965), a depiction of the aftermath of a nuclear attack on Britain shot in black and white. The film draws from the British film traditions of both documentary and science fiction by exhibiting a tension between iconography and spectacle. Film, as its most basic function, both tells a story and describes the elements of that story using images, and by doing so can blur the line between fiction and reality. Andrew Higson states that an image can be used either …

Grown Unschoolers’ Evaluations Of Their Unschooling Experiences: Report I On A Survey Of 75 Unschooled Adults, Peter Gray, Gina Riley Jan 2015

Grown Unschoolers’ Evaluations Of Their Unschooling Experiences: Report I On A Survey Of 75 Unschooled Adults, Peter Gray, Gina Riley

Publications and Research

Seventy-five adults, who had been unschooled for at least the years that would have been their last two years of high school, responded to a survey about their experiences. Their responses indicated that their parents generally played supportive, not directive roles in their education and played bigger supportive roles for those who started their unschooling early than for those who started later. The great majority of respondents reported that they were very happy with their unschooling. Nearly all of them valued the freedom it gave them to pursue their own interests in their own ways, and many reported that unschooling …

Ethnically Diverse Students And K-12 Teacher Preparation Programs: An Analytical Study Of Effective Recruitment And Retention Strategies In Select Midwest Colleges And Universities, Mymique Y. Baxter

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

In the years following the 1954 Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas, the shrinking numbers of ethnically diverse teachers in U.S. public schools has been the focal point of public opinion, community leaders, educators and policymakers. To address the scarcity of the nation’s teachers in our teacher workforce, a variety of creative and innovative initiatives, which focused on recruitment, retention, and graduation of students of color have been implemented throughout the years. The purpose of this dissertation was to analyze effective recruitment and retention strategies used at a selection of predominantly white Midwest colleges …

LIB 322: Wicked Problems of Sustainability

The Heartside Gleaning Initiative (HGI) is a Grand Rapids based non-profit organization that collects unsold produce from the city’s two farmers markets and distributes it to the low-income residents of the Heartside Neighborhood. Through their efforts they increase access to healthy and local foods as well as combat food waste in the Heartside Community. Seeing the value of this work, we, an interdisciplinary team of Grand Valley State University students, sought to further the mission of the HGI by focusing predominantly on two vital aspects of any non-profit business: promoting and funding. In the winter semester of 2015 we established …

But Do Lower-Wage Jobs Follow? Comparing Wage-Based Outcomes Of Light Rail Transit To Control Corridors, Arthur C. Nelson, Matt Miller, Dejan Eskic, Joanna P. Ganning, Jenny H. Liu, Reid Ewing

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

Literature suggests that rail transit improvements should be associated with more jobs and perhaps increasing share of jobs in a metropolitan area. Literature and some research also suggest that such improvements should increase the number of lower-wage jobs accessible to transit. In this paper, we assess both in the context of all 11 light rail transit systems built in metropolitan areas of fewer than eight million residents in the nation since 1981. Using census block-level job data over the period 2002 to 2011, we evaluate change in jobs and change in metropolitan area job share for all jobs, and lower- …

Creation And Covenant - A Hermeneutical Approach To The Correlation Of The Seventh-Day And The Biblical Sabbath, Sergio L. Silva Jan 2015

Creation And Covenant - A Hermeneutical Approach To The Correlation Of The Seventh-Day And The Biblical Sabbath, Sergio L. Silva

Andrews University Seminary Student Journal

For centuries, scholars have debated the nature of the relationship between the seventh day (Gen 2:1-3) and the biblical Sabbath (Exod 20:8-11). While Covenant Theologians insist that the seventh day works as the theological foundation of the biblical Sabbath, New Covenant Theologians reject this relationship and insist the Sabbath is an institution given exclusively to the Israelites. This article argues that according to an exegetical-historical and theological reading of selected texts on the Sabbath, one must regard the seventh day as the theological foundation of the biblical Sabbath to sustain a consistent and coherent theological system that uses Scripture as …
