Hands Percussion : Moving Towards A Malaysian Identity / Jotsna Nithyanandan, Jotsna Nithyanandan
Hands Percussion : Moving Towards A Malaysian Identity / Jotsna Nithyanandan, Jotsna Nithyanandan
Student Works (2010-2019)
This study examined the idea behind the compositions of Malaysian Chinese Shigu drumming performing group Hands Percussion (HANDS) that have incorporated Gamelan, and the Indian Tabla drumming patterns as part of their repertoire. HANDS began with the 24 Seasons Drums, when it was founded in 1997, as a Malaysian Chinese percussion ensemble. This dissertation elucidates how HANDS later forms a multi-ethnic identity in its production that moved away from a single ethnic Chinese performing art group. This study touches on issues of culture and intercultural exchanges on the premise that HANDS is based in Malaysia, a country that is pluralistic …

An Analysis Of The Elementary Art Education Curriculum In Iran / Minoo Aiatollahi Tabar, Tabar Minoo Aiatollahi
Student Works (2010-2019)
The aim of this research was to look at the practice of art education in Iranian elementary schools. This was done by examining the structure of art curriculum and the way it was translated into teaching practice in the schools. This attempt was also to chart out the status of the art curriculum, and to suggest possible alternatives for its improvement. This study involved three forms of examination in the process of evaluation, each of which engaged a different method of data collection. To identify the objectives, approaches, and content of the curriculum, the method of examination involved collecting information …

Hirarc Study For Occupational Safety And Health Evaluation Of Clinical Waste Handlers At A Hospital And An Incineration Plant / Kauselya Muniandy, Kauselya Muniandy
Student Works (2010-2019)
Clinical waste poses serious threats and hazards to human health. Clinical waste, which is categorized as a scheduled waste in Malaysia, has been increasing over the years. Thus, proper clinical waste management is important as improper clinical waste handling has led to many incidents involving handlers over the years (Arab et al., 2008). However, research on hazard and risk assessment for clinical waste management has been very limited, and there is a serious dearth of information for risk control planning. This project seeks to document the hazards found during clinical waste collection and disposal practices in a healthcare establishment and …

Beginning With Yes: A Review Essay On Michael Wheeler's The Art Of Negotiation: How To Improvise Agreement In A Chaotic World, Leonard L. Riskin
Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution
This Review Essay describes the book, introduces a new system for understanding models of negotiation, and uses it to explain and expand upon some of the ideas in The Art of Negotiation. Then it suggests a different title for Wheeler's book, and describes recent efforts to connect improv with negotiation and mediation training and practice. I mean to honor Wheeler's important work by extending it.
Intravenous Tranexamic Acid As An Adjunct Haemostat To Ornipressin During Open Myomectomy. A Randomized Double Blind Placebo Controlled Trial, Sammy Ngichabe, Timona Obura, William Stones
Intravenous Tranexamic Acid As An Adjunct Haemostat To Ornipressin During Open Myomectomy. A Randomized Double Blind Placebo Controlled Trial, Sammy Ngichabe, Timona Obura, William Stones
Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa
Background: Myomectomy is a surgical technique used for removal of uterine fibroids and historically hysterectomy has represented the mainstay of treatment. The options of conservative surgical approaches mainly aim at retention of fertility but have to be balanced against potential risks such as haemorrhage; blood loss at myomectomy still remains troublesome with use of various pharmacologic agents yielding inconclusive results. This trial aimed to explore the benefit of combining ornipressin and tranexamic acid during open myomectomy.
Study design: A randomized double blind placebo controlled trial.
Methods: Women who satisfied eligibility criteria were enrolled into the study and randomized into one …
The Guitar As An "Open-Air" Instrument In The Early Romantic Era, Panagiotis Poulopoulos
The Guitar As An "Open-Air" Instrument In The Early Romantic Era, Panagiotis Poulopoulos
Soundboard Scholar
In the first decades of the nineteenth century, playing music outdoors became a popular trend in Europe and North America. This largely reflected the Romantic ideal of coming closer to nature, whose allure played a significant role in contemporary education, literature, art, fashion, and music. By investigating a wide variety of written and pictorial sources, as well as surviving instruments in museum collections, this article discusses the development of the guitar as an “open-air” instrument as epitomised by the invention of guitar variants for use “on the go”. Moreover, the article sheds new light on the guitar’s connections to other …
The Microtonal Guitars Of Harry Partch, John Schneider
The Microtonal Guitars Of Harry Partch, John Schneider
Soundboard Scholar
Known as an "American Maverick," Harry Partch (1901–1974) was surely one of the United States's most colorful composers. His dissatisfaction with the scales and instruments of Western music inspired him to design and build an orchestra of over two dozen handcrafted "microtonal" instruments that were tuned to his notorious "monophonic" scale of forty-three tones per octave. Between 1934 and 1952, Partch created four different adapted guitars, using them in fifteen compositions ranging from solo song cycles (Barstow, December 1942, U.S. Highball, Three Intrusions) to chamber music, dances, and four of his five major …
Fernando Sor On The Move In The Early 1820s, Erik Stenstadvold
Fernando Sor On The Move In The Early 1820s, Erik Stenstadvold
Soundboard Scholar
This article adds to our knowledge of Sor’s final months in London in 1822 and his subsequent Paris sojourn before he went to Russia in 1823. Central to Sor’s activity during this period was his involvement in the ballet Cendrillon, for which he wrote the music. Hitherto unknown reviews of the premiere at the King’s Theatre on March 26, 1822, show that both the ballet and the music were consistently well received by the London critics. This success led to action being taken to have the ballet staged at the Paris Opéra, and in the fall that same year …
Hazards To Effective Due Diligence, Michael Benoliel
Hazards To Effective Due Diligence, Michael Benoliel
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
It is not surprising that many business deals fail to realize their expected future value because some deal makers fail to perform effective due diligence. Successful deal makers, however, know that due diligence is one of the most important tasks in successful deal making. Thus, they avoid the psychological and contextual traps that cause poor due diligence. In this article, I describe the hazards – the psychological biases and contextual factors – that might affect the due diligence task. These hazards include information availability bias; confirmation bias; overconfidence bias; time pressure; self-interested agents; deal fever; narrow focus; and complexity. Following …

Fowl Feathered Fox: Monsters, Pipers, Families And Flocks, Michelle Aslett
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Fowl Feathered Fox: Monsters, Pipers, Families and Flocks is a doctoral work consisting of a full-length stage play and an exegesis. An introduction outlines the scope of the doctoral work, while a concluding chapter reflects on research findings and considers staging issues and implications. Appendices include images incorporated into the play’s action as well as photographed excerpts from a series of visual diaries used to document the play’s evolution. The play, Fowl Feathered Fox, explores the nature of delusion, deception and the tragedy of The Beast Within. Borrowing as it does from the traditions of revenge tragedy, comedy and horror, …
Enter The Movement: Generating Stimulus From Sceneography And Proposing 'De-Sign' As A Tool For Choreographic Invention, Helene Gee Markstein
Enter The Movement: Generating Stimulus From Sceneography And Proposing 'De-Sign' As A Tool For Choreographic Invention, Helene Gee Markstein
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The purpose of this study was to provide the notion of ‘de-sign’ as a proposed aid for movement composition and is the core framework of my research, which is aimed at empowering the dancer/choreographer with a multi-disciplinary aesthetic and a focus for dialectic discussion and experimentation with all material enclosed within the scenographic. De-sign is a method for decoding scenography (as a deconstruction tool to extract the components of composition classified as elements and principles). The play on words is a deliberate acknowledgement of the ‘design’ in the scenographic environment which, in this study, takes into account that all forms …
The Impact Of Participative Communication On Organisational Cultural Change: Two Local Government Cases Of Change, Katie Turton
The Impact Of Participative Communication On Organisational Cultural Change: Two Local Government Cases Of Change, Katie Turton
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Managing change is of critical importance in organisations. Communication during the change process has been the subject of considerable and highly contested academic and managerial debate. In this study, The Impact of Participative Communication on Organisational Cultural Change: Two Local Government Cases of Change, communication during the change process was closely examined to see how, if at all, participative processes impact upon the adoption of change. As a result of this research a ‘Ladder of Employee Participation in Change Management’ was developed, to better understand the nature of participative communication and provide clarity for change practitioners who develop change communication …
Contemporary Kitsch: An Examination Through Creative Practice, Sally Stewart
Contemporary Kitsch: An Examination Through Creative Practice, Sally Stewart
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This exegesis examines the theoretical concept of contemporary kitsch within a creative practice that incorporates sculptural and installation art. Kitsch is a distinct aesthetic style. Once designated to the rubbish bin of culture, kitsch was considered to be low class, bad taste cheap fakes and copies (Greenberg, 1961; Adorno & Horkheimer, 1991; Calinescu, 1987; Dorfles, 1969). I argue, however, that this is no longer the case. This research critically examines the way in which contemporary kitsch now plays a vital and positive role in social and individual aesthetic life.
Although there are conflicting points of view and distinct variations between …

Performing Transformation In The Community University Of The Rivers (Part 1), Dan Baron Cohen
Journal of Urban Culture Research
In this two-part article, I seek to present our emerging Community University of the Rivers through the languages of storytelling (poetry, song, image and theatre) to bring to life the context and pedagogy of Transformance in action, in the Afro-Indigenous community of Cabelo Seco (Portuguese: Dry Hair), founding community of Marabá city, Pará, in the Brazilian Amazon. I use this strategy to ensure that you meet and might identify with my collaborators in our Community University of the Rivers, as living subjects. By privileging human narration, I do not mean to the privilege action over reaction, as our dramatic performance …

The pieces include Pacem: A Hymn for Peace by Robert Spittal, The Jig Is Up by Daniel Kallman, Bagatelles for Band by Vincent Persichetti, and Rhoseymedre by Ralph Vaughn Williams. Topics addressed include diatonic motivic development in Pacem, a comparison of Daniel Kallman's The Jig Is Up to the compositional styles of …
Stepping Out From The Crowd: (Re)Branding Jamaica's Tourism Product Through Sports And Culture, Thelca Patrice White
Stepping Out From The Crowd: (Re)Branding Jamaica's Tourism Product Through Sports And Culture, Thelca Patrice White
Masters Theses
Branding and marketing, in a world where much emphasis is placed on commercialism, are inextricably linked, and carry significant weight. Brands, as we have come to know them, are seemingly ubiquitous, and represent an omnipresent way for many businesses to communicate vital information about their products to existing, as well as, prospective customers. However, while many persons consider branding to be directly related to huge corporations, branding has expanded its repertoire to include nations. While many scholars of marketing and branding have placed keen attention on the branding of corporations, very little attention has been placed on the branding of …
"Fine Dignity, Picturesque Beauty, And Serious Purpose": The Reorientation Of Suffrage Media In The Twentieth Century, Emily Scarbrough
"Fine Dignity, Picturesque Beauty, And Serious Purpose": The Reorientation Of Suffrage Media In The Twentieth Century, Emily Scarbrough
Masters Theses
Throughout the first half century of the woman's suffrage movement, the women of the movement were depicted as dastardly, masculine women who usurped the family structure with their penchant for politics. In the twentieth century, a new generation of woman's suffragists took command of their appearance in the media. Instead of controversial figures, woman's suffragists were envisioned as normal, beautiful women and mothers. Through the use of mass media, woman suffragists restructured their campaign to convince the general public that society needed women to clean up politics. In doing so, suffragists sacrificed their goals of sexual equality in favor of …
Characteristics Of A Modern Ballet: The Adoption Of Sonic Vocabulary And Textual Treatment In The Earth Without Water (2014), Mark Luke Rheaume
Characteristics Of A Modern Ballet: The Adoption Of Sonic Vocabulary And Textual Treatment In The Earth Without Water (2014), Mark Luke Rheaume
Masters Theses
The modern ballet, as an orchestral genre, owes much of its status and value to composers of the early 20th century. Claude Debussy and Igor Stravinsky’s groundbreaking works, Prélude à l'apres-midi d'un faune and Le Sacre du Printemps respectively, revolutionized the sonic landscape of ballet and expanded the ideas of interaction with texts and scenarios. This paper demonstrates the continued use of these innovations in the author's composition, The Earth Without Water. This analysis identifies three categories—harmonic vocabulary, rhythmic/formal organization, and textual treatment—by which The Earth derives content or technique from Prélude and Le Sacre.

The Impact Of Singing-Integrated Reading Instruction On The Oral Reading Fluency And Motivation Of Elementary Students In An Out-Of-School Time Program, Yvette M. Moorehead-Carter
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of singing-integrated reading instruction on the oral reading fluency and motivation of elementary students in an after school program. Participants were third graders (n = 29) who attended the singing-integrated oral reading fluency (SI ORF) intervention twice a week for eight weeks. Components of the intervention included teacher-modeling of fluent oral reading, oral support, repeated reading and singing activities from a variety of children’s literature, and individual free-time.
The adapted Elementary Reading Attitude Survey (ERAS; McKenna & Kear, 1990) measured recreational, academic, and composite reading attitudes. The Qualitative Reading …

Delaware’S Implied Contractual Covenant Of Good Faith And “Sibling Rivalry” Among Equity Holders, Daniel S. Kleinberger
Delaware’S Implied Contractual Covenant Of Good Faith And “Sibling Rivalry” Among Equity Holders, Daniel S. Kleinberger
Faculty Scholarship
An obligation of good faith and fair dealing is implied in every common law contract and is codified in the Uniform Commercial Code (“U.C.C”). The terminology differs: Some jurisdictions refer to an “implied covenant;” others to an “implied contractual obligation;” still others to an “implied duty.” But whatever the label, the concept is understood by the vast majority of U.S. lawyers as a matter of commercial rather than entity law. And, to the vast majority of corporate lawyers, “good faith” does not mean contract law but rather conjures up an important aspect of a corporate director’s duty of loyalty.
Nonetheless, …

A Platform For Discipline: Social Media Speech And The Workplace, David Mangan
A Platform For Discipline: Social Media Speech And The Workplace, David Mangan
Osgoode Legal Studies Research Paper Series
The common law engages with social media in a manner that overlaps with defamation: seeking to balance the competing interests of free speech and protection of reputation. Employment law prompts a question as to how the law on this topic is developing. Adjudication of the concept of business reputation is the comparative focal point. Canadian employment law is developing a balance between protecting business reputation and workers’ free speech (though there are issues arising therein). In the UK, however, the term has been more of a blunt tool. As a result, a juxtaposition has arisen: speech in traditional media is …
How Atrocity Becomes Law: The Neoliberalisation Of Security Governance And The Customary Laws Of Armed Conflict, Tracey Leigh Dowdeswell
How Atrocity Becomes Law: The Neoliberalisation Of Security Governance And The Customary Laws Of Armed Conflict, Tracey Leigh Dowdeswell
Osgoode Legal Studies Research Paper Series
This article discusses the impact of neoliberal ideologies of security governance on the laws of armed conflict, and describes how neoliberal practices of privatisation, outsourcing, and risk management within the security sector have facilitated the legalisation of atrocities. Neoliberal mentalities of governance have significantly impacted military administration in combat operations by decentralising control, by promoting discretion and freedom of action down the chain-of-command, and by institutionalising intent-based orders and standing Rules of Engagement. In so doing, the military has shifted the criteria for attack from one based upon an individual's status as a combatant to one of defining and containing …
Regulating Water And War In Iraq: A Dangerous Dark Side Of New Governance, Tracey Leigh Dowdeswell, Patricia Hania
Regulating Water And War In Iraq: A Dangerous Dark Side Of New Governance, Tracey Leigh Dowdeswell, Patricia Hania
Osgoode Legal Studies Research Paper Series
In the legal scholarship, the 'new governance' mode of governance advances an administrative arrangement where decision-making is shared amongst a range of actors, both public and private. The flexible, responsive, and collaborative governance orientation is intended to counter the ill effects of a coercive, top-down, state-centric, command- and-control approach to governance. Critics contend the new governance framework can displace the interests of local communities, disempower individuals, and dislodge basic human rights. The U.S. military has adopted such an adaptive approach in its own governance structure, which in this article is referred to as: the new governance "mentality." This mentality of …
Commodification And Juridification In Football: Reflections On The Study Of Law And Society, S. B. Archer
Commodification And Juridification In Football: Reflections On The Study Of Law And Society, S. B. Archer
Osgoode Legal Studies Research Paper Series
A review of certain themes in the literature discussing football (soccer) in contemporary law and society, with emphasis on commodification and juridification and reference to the 2014 World Cup. Drawing on a variety of literatures it is proposed that to better understand legal dimensions of football, it is useful to review globalization theories rooted in social, economic, and cultural conditions, and contrasts the recent rapid development of literature on football in the social sciences with a narrower treatment in legal literatures. It is speculated that an anxiety informs the treatment of social performances like football as “merely games” in contrast …
Who Owns Ellen's Oscar Selfie? Deciphering Rights Of Attribution Concerning User Generated Content On Social Media, 14 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 564 (2015), Michael Reed
UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law
One of the most memorable moments of the 2014 Academy Awards was Ellen DeGeneres’s famous selfie taken with Bradley Cooper, Meryl Streep, and other famous friends. This so-called “Oscar Selfie” has been estimated to be worth millions of advertising dollars for the event’s sponsor, Samsung. DeGeneres’ use of selfies as a promotional tool was novel method of documenting Hollywood’s greatest night which proved an undeniable successful. However, the fact that Bradley Cooper actually captured the Oscar Selfie raises a number of important questions about how user-generated content distributed through social media fits into existing intellectual property law. At the heart …
From The Statute Of Anne To Z.Z. Top: The Strange World Of American Sound Recordings, How It Came About, And Why It Will Never Go Away, 15 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 1 (2015), Bruce Epperson
UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law
Uniquely among all industrialized nations, the United States extended no copyright protection to sound recordings until 1972. The individual aural representation captured for playback could only be protected by the common or statutory laws of individual states. This feature was carried forward into the comprehensive revision of the Copyright Act implemented on January 1, 1978. Although the Copyright Act contained a sweeping provision that brought works created prior to the legislation under federal protection, pre-1972 sound recordings were specifically exempted. The extent to which this lack of status has created a legal and environmental void is best demonstrated by a …
