Caribbean Heat Threatens Health, Well-Being, And The Future Of Humanity, Cheryl C. Macpherson, Muge Akpinar-Elci

Climate change has substantial impacts on public health and safety, disease risks and the provision of health care, with the poor being particularly disadvantaged. Management of the associated health risks and changing health service requirements requires adequate responses at local levels. Health-care providers are central to these responses. While climate change raises ethical questions about its causes, impacts and social justice, medicine and bioethics typically focus on individual patients and research participants rather than these broader issues. We broaden this focus by examining awareness among health-care providers in the Caribbean region, where geographic and socioeconomic features pose particular vulnerabilities to …

The Speed Of Our Mental Soundtracks: Tracking The Tempo Of Involuntary Musical Imagery In Everyday Life, Kelly Jakubowski, Nicolas Farrugia, Andrea R. Halpern, Sathish K. Sankarpandi, Lauren Stewart
Faculty Journal Articles
The study of spontaneous and everyday cognitions is an area of rapidly growing interest. One of the most ubiquitous forms of spontaneous cognition is involuntary musical imagery (INMI), the involuntarily retrieved and repetitive mental replay of music. The present study introduced a novel method for capturing temporal features of INMI within a naturalistic setting. This method allowed for the investigation of two questions of interest to INMI researchers in a more objective way than previously possible, concerning (1) the precision of memory representations within INMI and (2) the interactions between INMI and concurrent affective state. Over the course of 4 …

Modern "Sappers And Miners": The Rehnquist And Roberts Courts And The Civil Rights Act Of 1964, Jonathan K. Stubbs
Law Faculty Publications
o orient readers on what is at stake, Section I provides a brief overview of the substantive provisions of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Section II considers reasons why the Act was premised on Congress' Commerce Clause authority rather than the enforcement power that the Constitution confers upon Congress under the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments. Section III evaluates several recent Supreme Court decisions that give the Commerce Clause a restrictive interpretation. For illustrative purposes, this section ex- plores the impact on Title Two of the Act. Finally, the article closes with a few observations of the implications of the …
Wagering On The Lives Of Strangers: The Insurable Interest Requirement In The Life Insurance Secondary Market, Peter N. Swisher
Wagering On The Lives Of Strangers: The Insurable Interest Requirement In The Life Insurance Secondary Market, Peter N. Swisher
Law Faculty Publications
The purpose of this article is to explore and analyze the crucial inter- relationship and the present tension existing between various life settlement alternatives and the insurable interest requirement for life insurance. Does the 240-year-old insurable interest doctrine adequately meet the needs of a modern society in recognizing a secondary market for life in- surance? If so, what additional remedies, if any, are available to both the insured and the insurer to legally protect the contractual rights and reasonable expectations of the parties?
Dramatic Sideshows At The Hearing, George A. Bermann
Dramatic Sideshows At The Hearing, George A. Bermann
Faculty Scholarship
International arbitration has plenty of dramatic moments, strewn across the arbitration life cycle. They can surface quite early, as in the context of petitions for interim relief, document production, challenges to the arbitrator or various dispositive motions. They are less likely to occur at the post-award stage (i.e. annulment or opposition to the recognition or enforcement of awards), due in part to the fact that that stage typically plays out in the sober atmosphere of a national court. But more often than not, the drama associated with international arbitration takes place in and around the arbitral hearing room.

Minerva Teichert's The Seduction Of Corianton, Herman Du Toit
BYU Studies
A previously unknown oil sketch by Minerva Teichert (1888–1976), the pioneering LDS woman artist, was recently acquired by an art collector when it came up for sale in Salt Lake City. This small painting depicts the temptation of Corianton, who was the son of Alma the Younger in the Book of Mormon; it captures the moment spoken of in Alma’s words to his wayward son: “Thou didst do that which was grievous unto me; for thou didst forsake the ministry, and did go over into the land of Siron among the borders of the Lamanites, after the harlot Isabel. Yea, …

Centennial Commemorative Chronicle 1915-2015
For 100 years, the men and women
of the student newspaper at Eastern Illinois University
have been responsible for covering their campus and community,
for reporting the local reaction to national issues
and for representing their fellow journalists
and their newspaper in the state and nation.
They have done all this under the leadership of their peers
and advisers. And they have built a strong foundation
from which the staffs of the next century can build.

Southern Dreams And A New Theory Of First Amendment Legal Realism, Richard Delgado, Jean Steancic
Southern Dreams And A New Theory Of First Amendment Legal Realism, Richard Delgado, Jean Steancic
Emory Law Journal
When legal realism swept through the law nearly a century ago, spelling the end to what Roscoe Pound called ¿mechanical jurisprudence,¿ one enclave that emerged unscathed is the First Amendment, where shopworn rules, hidebound doctrinal boxes, and thought-ending clichés still hold sway. We show how this is so and give examples of a number of areas where change is in order. An examination of federal court cases having to do with hate speech and cross burning, as well as the wave of nativist sentiment that swept the South in the wake of increased Latino immigration, show how an application of …

Implementing A Film Series For Community Engagement, Kelly D. Blessinger, Stephanie Braunstein, Jennifer Abraham Cramer, Linda Smith Griffin, Paul Hrycaj
Faculty Publications
This paper will review the experiences of the LSU Libraries with its film series, which has been running to this point for two years. The authors will investigate the "nuts and bolts" of an academic library initiating a film series, some of the pitfalls and opportunities such a series entails, and how those pitfalls can be managed and opportunities capitalized upon, as well as touching on some theoretical issues related to these matters, such as collaboration between libraries and faculty, the academic library as place, and "engagement" vs. "outreach."

Co-Authorship In Action: Curation & Collaboration In American Post-Judson Dance, Sara Gibbons
Honors Theses
This essay aims to illuminate and champion concert dance through an investigation into a sliver of American postmodern dance, which I term post-Judson dance, in an attempt to better understand, define, and assert dance in academe, art, and culture. This thesis examines the use and benefits of collaboration in today’s dance devising processes and the influences that constructed collaboration as a choreographic working method. Through historical, theoretical, contemporary, and practice-based evidence, this essay argues that through choreographer and performer participation, leading to the transformation of content, style, structure, and discovery, choreographers harvest an expansive collection of information that they use …

Diaohua Chang In Food Court Setting In Klang Valley, Malaysia / Chin Ee Ven, Ee Ven Chin
Student Works (2010-2019)
Diaohua Chang is a place that provides nightly singing performance for the Chinese community in Malaysia. The overwhelming majority of male crowd can purchase flower garlands for the female singers as gratuity. This research focused on Diaohua Chang at the open-air food court where the singers perform mainly Chinese songs for the customers who are having their drinks or food. The gap of research was discovered after reviewing the literature of ethnomusicology, Chinese popular music, Chinese performing arts in Malaysia and other related researches. Diaohua Chang music performance which is part of the culture of Malaysian Chinese community was absent …
