College Students' Knowledge About Stuttering: A Preliminary Investigation, Nichole Marie Terry

Student Theses and Dissertations

There is ample research on the public’s perception of individuals who stutter, but little research was found about the public’s knowledge about the definition and etiology of stuttering. The present study attempted to address whether college students in a specific area of study possessed either quantitative or qualitative differences in their knowledge about the definition and etiology of stuttering. Subjects included 80 males and 100 females across 9 different academic colleges to assess their knowledge of stuttering. Five open response questions were presented to each participant. Responses were orthographically transcribed and coded based on the current notions on the etiology …

Transformative Leadership: Building Social Equity Through Individualized Professional Development, Curtis David Gunn Dec 2015

Transformative Leadership: Building Social Equity Through Individualized Professional Development, Curtis David Gunn

Dissertations

Developing social justice awareness is a challenging task. Many educational institutions have limited discourse related to race and equity. This autoethnography examines one leader’s attempt to become a transformational leader by having ongoing conversations about race and racism, applying the individualized transformative model of professional development during conversations, utilizing a peer advisory group for feedback, and reflecting on the results. Findings reveal the most important element for growth is the act of engaging in the conversation regardless of one’s perceived level of competence. The individualized transformative model of professional development was demonstrated to be an effective approach to professional development.

Transformational Learning: An Investigation Of The Emotional Maturation Advancement In Learners Aged 50 And Older, Susan Lorraine Lundry

Dissertations

Human beings have spent much time and effort in trying to understand themselves, others, and their world. Mankind uses intellect when trying to understand life but the majority of people continue to encounter frustration, confusion, and a variety of obstacles when dealing with daily challenges and people. Theorists and researchers understand that successful existence requires more than mere knowledge; it requires a level of understanding, a form of wisdom foreign to the bulk of the populace. The missing ingredient for this kind of wisdom is the ability to ‘know thyself,’ which is the beginning of establishing a higher level of …

Embedding Elements Of Positive Behavioral Interventions And Supports (Pbis) In A Summer Program, Laura Ruberto Dec 2015

Embedding Elements Of Positive Behavioral Interventions And Supports (Pbis) In A Summer Program, Laura Ruberto

Doctoral Dissertations

Summer programs are one of many out-of-school time opportunities offered to students. Out-of-school time programs are valuable to communities as they offer a supervised environment during times when risky behaviors can be prevalent and have potential to promote academic and socio-emotional growth in the nation’s youth (Zief & Lauver, 2006). Although federal mandates highlight a multitude of academic, enrichment, and family engagement objectives, less emphasis is placed on behavioral needs of students in out-of-school time programs (Afterschool Alliance, 2012). Furthermore, evidence suggests that behavioral support is needed in out-of-school time programs (Connecticut Commissioner on Education, 2008); yet, staff are often …

Hearing Officers' Perceptions Of Their Roles In Welfare Organizations, Karen R. Brown Dec 2015

Hearing Officers' Perceptions Of Their Roles In Welfare Organizations, Karen R. Brown

Doctoral Dissertations

Little is known about the officials who conduct administrative hearings for aggrieved welfare clients. Hearing officers are charged with ensuring due process for welfare clients, called appellants in the hearing process, who believe that mistakes have been made in their cases and who wish to challenge those decisions. Administrative hearings are one of the few vehicles that afford clients the opportunity to contest welfare policies and procedures. This study explored welfare hearing officers and their perceptions of their roles in conducting hearings.

The concepts of role theory, organizational climate and aspects of professional training were used to examine the role …

Rafts of sargassum seaweed kilometers wide have been invading the Caribbean for more than five years, but 2015 was the worst. Tons of seaweed stretch from Texas south to Trinidad and Tobago, with the Lesser Antilles suffering the most damage. Residents near beaches are exposed to an insidious and pernicious danger, scientists say, from fumes that smell like rotten eggs, emitted by the decaying algae. The odor also drives tourists away from beaches and restaurants, and the tourism economy is collapsing.Amid the algae crisis, an elderly woman, Virginie Mark, is trying to survive. She struggles with her health, finances and …

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

The purpose of this quality improvement project was to provide a means to effectively assess patients as they are admitted to the hospitals and to effectively communicate a patient’s violent tendencies within the healthcare setting. Workplace violence is a serious problem that affects all healthcare professionals. Although serious assaults and homicides attract more media attention, the majority of workplace violence consists of non-fatal assaults. Nurses, aides, and patient care technicians suffer the most non-fatal assaults resulting in injury. Due to the growing incidence of assault and injury among healthcare workers, some states are calling for additional study on workplace violence. …

Caution: Line-Of-Sight In Icu Designs, Diane C. Bartos Dec 2015

Caution: Line-Of-Sight In Icu Designs, Diane C. Bartos

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

It has been estimated that by the end of 2015, the U.S. will spend approximately $200 billion in new healthcare facilities construction. Infection prevention, patient and family satisfaction, and technologies influence contemporary designs of critical care units. All of these impacts have created larger patient care units, with a majority of single patient rooms. These larger spaces have created challenges for the clinicians to maintain the line-of-sight. The line-of-sight is one tool clinicians often use to maintain patient safety.

Since the seminal publication by the Institute of Medicine in 1999, patient safety concerns have escalated after revealing numerous deaths in …

The Creation And Implementation Of Guidelines For The Appropriate Termination Of Patient-Provider Relationships, Rowena D. Nolasco

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Primary care providers have terminated patient-provider relationships when they deem them no longer therapeutic. Healthcare providers are increasingly considering this an acceptable practice. However, the criteria for this decision remain unclear. As providers discharge challenging or difficult patients from their practices, questions to support this decision arise. Discharged patients face displacement and healthcare is disrupted. This project will (a) describe problematic patient-provider relationships and its effects, (b) identify possible alternatives to the firing of patients, (c) list appropriate reasons for termination, and (d) present recommended procedures to avoid allegations of medical abandonment. The project's product is an Appropriate Discharge or …

Using A Strategic Model For Professional Development: The Importance Of Evidence-Based Competencies As A Foundation For Professional Practice., Peggi B. Winter

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Abstract

A nursing professional practice model (PPM) is designed to provide a framework for how nursing practices, communicates, leads, collaborates, and provides the highest quality of care as we navigate the complex healthcare system. An infrastructure for learning, competency, and performance needs to be integrated into this model as a foundation for accelerating business and clinical initiatives, promoting standardization, and sharing successful practices. It is now, more than ever, a necessity to have a well-trained, highly competent nursing workforce. Simply having the knowledge and the skill to do a job is insufficient; rather, it is implied that a competency has …

Manganese-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MEMRI) opens the great opportunity to study complex paradigms of central nervous system (CNS) in freely behaving animals and reveals new pathophysiological information that might be otherwise difficult to gain. Due to advantageous chemical and biological properties of manganese (Mn2+), MEMRI has been successfully applied in the studies of several neurological diseases using translational animal models to assess comprehensive information about neuronal activity, morphology, neuronal tracts, and rate of axonal transport. Although previous studies highlight the potential of MEMRI for brain imaging, the limitations concerning the use of Mn2+ in living animals and …

Acute Methamphetamine Exposure Affects Histone Modifying Enzymes And Cytokine Production In Macrophages, Ariel Burns Dec 2015

Acute Methamphetamine Exposure Affects Histone Modifying Enzymes And Cytokine Production In Macrophages, Ariel Burns

Theses & Dissertations

The effects of methamphetamine (Meth) in the periphery are not well studied and a comprehensive investigation on the effects and molecular mechanism will give insight into why Meth users are at an increased risk of infections. For this reason, we use macrophages as a model for the immune system dysregulation seen in Meth abusers and also because macrophages are a long-lived cell that HIV infects and persists in. We aimed to determine the effects of Meth on the cytokine production, histone modifying enzymes and the corresponding histone post-translational modifications, and the molecular mechanism in HIV-infected human macrophages treated with combination …

An Examination Of Voter Groups That Make Up The Emerging Democratic Majority Thesis, Jason Waguespack Dec 2015

An Examination Of Voter Groups That Make Up The Emerging Democratic Majority Thesis, Jason Waguespack

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In 2002, John Judis and Ruy Teixeira published The Emerging Democratic Majority, a book that postulated that the United States was in the beginning of a political realignment that would spell the end of the Reagan-era coalition that gave Republicans an electoral advantage on the presidency. The authors claimed an electorate that would favor the Democratic Party would emerge to take its place. Since Senator Barack Obama’s victory in the 2008 presidential election was powered by a coalition that looked much like the one Judis and Teixeira described, it appeared the authors’ thesis was being borne out by actual …

From Containing Communism To Fighting Floods: The Louisiana Army National Guard In The Cold War, 1946-1965, Rhett G. Breerwood

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In the decades following World War II, the Louisiana National Guard evolved due to world, national, and local events. In response to the United States’ Cold War policies to contain Communism, the Guard expanded, professionalized, and was occasionally called to federal service. In conjunction with Cold War fears of external attack and internal subversion, a civil defense mission brought coordination between federal, state and local response agencies. Despite the lack of large scale war service or an attack on the U.S. homeland , the skills and responsibilities acquired by the Louisiana Guard during this time period resulted in an enhanced …

Positive Parenting, Conduct Problems, And Callous-Unemotional Traits, Julia E. Clark Dec 2015

Positive Parenting, Conduct Problems, And Callous-Unemotional Traits, Julia E. Clark

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The current study tested the association of both positive and negative aspects of parenting with callous-unemotional (CU) traits and conduct problems. Caregivers of 92 kindergarteners were recruited to complete a series of survey measures. Overall, parent-report of negative parenting practices was not associated with teacher report of conduct problems. However, parent report of positive parenting practices (i.e., warmth, positive reinforcement, positive communication and cooperation) was negatively associated with conduct problems and CU traits. Interactions between positive parenting variables and CU traits in their association with conduct problems indicated that positive reinforcement related more strongly to lower levels of conduct problem …

Fearful Temperament Moderates The Association Between Positive Parenting And Children's Social Competence During Early Childhood, Jessica M. Grande Dec 2015

Fearful Temperament Moderates The Association Between Positive Parenting And Children's Social Competence During Early Childhood, Jessica M. Grande

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Social competence during kindergarten has been linked to adaptive teacher-child and peer relationships. The quality of parents’ interaction with their children during the toddler years may promote better social development placing children on a trajectory towards social competence. Quite possibly, children vary in how responsive they are to parenting efforts. This study evaluated the extent to which positive parenting predicted change in social competence from child age 3 to 4 among 137 parent-child dyads. Observational measures of positive parenting and fearful temperament were analyzed when children were 3-years of age. Teacher reports of social competence in the classroom were collected …
