Coercing Pregnancy, A. Rachel Camp
Coercing Pregnancy, A. Rachel Camp
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Intimate partners coerce thousands of women in the United States into pregnancy each year through manipulation, threats of violence, or acts that deliberately interfere with the use of, or access to, contraception or abortion. Although many of these pregnancies occur within the context of otherwise abusive relationships, for others, pregnancy serves as a trigger for intimate partner violence. Beyond violence preceding or resulting from pregnancy, women who experience coerced pregnancies often suffer other physical, financial and emotional harms. Despite its correlation to domestic violence, reproductive coercion fits imperfectly, if at all, within our existing laws designed to combat domestic violence …
The Social Value Of Academic Freedom Defended, J. Peter Byrne
The Social Value Of Academic Freedom Defended, J. Peter Byrne
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
This essay argues for the social value of academic freedom in law schools and in the university generally. It takes explicit issue with the arguments of Stanley Fish in Versions of Academic Freedom: From Professionalism to Revolution. The essay maintains that academic freedom is essential to a liberal society and deserving of constitutional protection because scholarship and teaching governed by disciplinary norms represents modernity's best secular effort at separating truth from falsehood.
What's The Harm Of Trademark Infringement?, Rebecca Tushnet
What's The Harm Of Trademark Infringement?, Rebecca Tushnet
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
For decades, the concept of actionable trademark infringement has been expanding. Source confusion, reverse confusion, approval/affiliation confusion, initial interest confusion, post-sale confusion, endorsement confusion, and so on, all have won cases for plaintiffs. Whether or not the confusion cost the plaintiff any sales, or was in any way material to consumers, our concept of trademark infringement now encompasses it. These expansions occurred for reasons that seemed sufficient to courts at the time, when advocates offered theories about how all these kinds of confusion could cause harm to the trademark owner. Primarily, courts feared that non-competing uses would preclude trademark owners …
Investigating The Influence Of Airborne Particulate Matter Source And Size On Health Outcomes, Matthew Darryl Ferguson
Investigating The Influence Of Airborne Particulate Matter Source And Size On Health Outcomes, Matthew Darryl Ferguson
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Air pollution is an environmental health concern throughout the world, and is responsible for an estimated 1 out of 8 deaths. As a common component of air pollution, particulate matter (PM) is one of six criteria air pollutants regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), with existing ambient standards for both PM2.5 and PM10. Currently there are no health-based regulations for the size fraction between 2.5 and 10 μm, commonly known as the coarse fraction (PMc). Previous studies show that PMc can induce health effects such as increased inflammation, and may be more detrimental to susceptible populations when directly compared …

Strategies To Enhance Learning In A Large Engineering Economics Course: Including Students’ Perceived Values In The Instructional Redesign Process, Kellie S. Grasman, D. Cernusca
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Purposeful implementation of technology in instructional design presents opportunities to increase institutional efficiency while simultaneously improving instructional quality. This paper presents findings from the implementation of a hybrid/buffet approach in an undergraduate Engineering Economics large course. A Design-Based Research (DBR) approach informed the instructional redesign and measured its effectiveness through multiple iterations, or macro-cycles, of implementation. Overall, pedagogical structure and specific technology solutions applied to each course component are described, as well as preliminary measures of effectiveness and student perception from a pilot offering of the hybrid/buffet course. Encouraged by positive preliminary results, a second implementation informed further study of …

Neuropsychological, Cognitive And Physiological Implications Of Barefoot Running On Working Memory, Shelley Ann Floyd
Neuropsychological, Cognitive And Physiological Implications Of Barefoot Running On Working Memory, Shelley Ann Floyd
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The aim of the present study was to compare the effects of barefoot versus shod running on working memory. I recruited exercise science students from the University of North Florida who exercised recreationally. Participants ran both barefoot and shod while hitting targets (poker chips) on a running track and without targets. I measured working memory using backward digit recall and also recorded participants’ heart rate, speed, and target accuracy. The main finding from this study was that working memory performance increased in the barefoot condition when participants hit targets (poker chips). This result supports the idea that additional attention is …
My Own Worst Enemy: Exploring Factors That Predict Self-Harm, Matthew Allen Loesch
My Own Worst Enemy: Exploring Factors That Predict Self-Harm, Matthew Allen Loesch
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Current research on factors predicting self-harm focus on disparate factors and may not be able to comprehensively explain the mechanisms causing self-harm. The aim of the current study was to examine factors that may be related yet independently predict self-harm. Factors discussed include rumination, self-criticism, and working memory. A binary logistic regression found that the only factor that predicted the presence of self-harming behavior was a high level of self-criticism. Further, a Classification and Regression Tree found that the single strongest predictor of self-harming behavior was a belief that love needs to be continually earned from others. Our findings have …
Is What Is Past Always Prologue? Priming To Past Conflicts And Fear Of Terrorism Influence Americans’ Support For Military Intervention In Syria, Daniel Walter Snook Ii
Is What Is Past Always Prologue? Priming To Past Conflicts And Fear Of Terrorism Influence Americans’ Support For Military Intervention In Syria, Daniel Walter Snook Ii
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Implicit knowledge influences decision-making in a variety of areas, including conflict resolution and decisions about war. Individuals may unknowingly apply implicit knowledge from past experiences to present experiences, even if that information leads to less accurate decisions in the present experience. The current study is an exploration into how implicit knowledge of past international conflicts and fear of terrorism affects recommendations for military conflict resolution in current international conflicts. Priming is one way to make implicit knowledge salient, and participants in this study were implicitly primed to think of either the Iraq War, World War II, or no war in …
The Relationship Between Illness Representations, Avoidant Coping, And Health Outcomes In People With Ongoing Symptoms Of Chronic Illness, Emily A. Bell
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Illness representations play an important role in the way people with chronic illness manage symptoms and view their overall health. Those suffering from functional somatic syndromes as well as conventional diagnoses seek information and meaning about their health threats in order to make appraisals concerning health outcomes. The primary interest of this study was to determine whether illness representations predict coping strategies which in turn influence general health outcomes. Data was collected from a series of four online surveys that measured an individual’s illness representations (IPQ-R), coping responses (Brief COPE), and health outcomes (RAND-36). The sample included 204 participants (169 …
Multi-Cultural Model Of Relational Personhood And Implementing Philosophy For Children (P4c): A Refusal Of The Illusion Of Individualism In America, Aron J. Burnett
Multi-Cultural Model Of Relational Personhood And Implementing Philosophy For Children (P4c): A Refusal Of The Illusion Of Individualism In America, Aron J. Burnett
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this thesis is to influence a re-evaluation of self conceptions in America in order to influence an alternative relational understanding of one’s self and others. This thesis begins based on the premise that individualism is a prominent aspect of American societies meaning its member’s understandings of their selves are self-centered, often non-empathetic, and in general more concerned with their own lives than that of others. The first half of this thesis is dedicated analyzing the American situation through an analysis of the sources of individualism and proving that individualism is actually an illusion that individuals falsely believe …
Taking The Victim Out Of Sexual Assault: The Effect Of Self-Compassion On Sexual Assault Survivors, Stephanie Cazeau
Taking The Victim Out Of Sexual Assault: The Effect Of Self-Compassion On Sexual Assault Survivors, Stephanie Cazeau
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Self-compassion is defined as the ability to treat oneself kindly following perceived failures and/or painful events; this construct is characterized by three components: self-kindness, common humanity and mindfulness (Neff, 2003). Although some people may naturally be more self-compassionate than others, previous self-compassion manipulations have shown that self-compassion is a mindset that can be taught. Several short-term self-compassion inductions have been published (Adams & Leary, 2007; Breines & Chen, 2012; Leary, Tate, Adams, Allen, & Hancock, 2007) showing that such inductions lead to more positive emotional and behavioral outcomes. The purpose of this research study was to determine whether a short …
Parental Self-Efficacy: Development Of A Measure To Reduce Children’S Contaminant Exposure, Lauren James
Parental Self-Efficacy: Development Of A Measure To Reduce Children’S Contaminant Exposure, Lauren James
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Indoor environmental contaminants (ECs) such as lead, mold, mercury, radon, and bisphenol A (BPA) are prevalent in American homes and have dire consequences to children’s development, especially for children under six. To optimize the efficacy of programs aiming to prevent exposure to ECs, it is necessary to investigate parental factors that influence behavioral change. Parental self-efficacy is one such psychological construct which could help explain why and for whom an intervention is effective. The current study presents a measure developed to assess parental self-efficacy for preventing children from being exposed to ECs, the Parental Self-efficacy for Contaminant Exposure Prevention (PS-CEP). …
Tapping Into The Social Capital Of African American Alumni Of Urban High Schools, Adrian Derrick Johnson
Tapping Into The Social Capital Of African American Alumni Of Urban High Schools, Adrian Derrick Johnson
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to identify and understand how African American alumni of urban high schools perceived that they could best contribute to their former schools. Despite numerous improvement efforts for several decades, the academic performance of urban high school students has failed to keep pace with that of their suburban counterparts. This research was framed around the premise that the rich legacies and diverse cultural experiences of African American alumni of urban high schools could mitigate the outside factors that negatively impact student performance at urban schools. These funds of knowledge, as Moll and Amanti (2005) described …

The Jacksonville Commitment Scholars Program: Graduates’ Perceptions Of Supports And Challenges, Ouida Y. Powe
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The success of The Jacksonville Commitment Scholars Program is well documented. These scholars are retained at a much higher rate and the six year graduation rate of the first two cohorts was higher than the general body. They are all students whose families have minimal financial resources and were eligible for the free or reduced lunch program during their high school years. They were subsequently eligible for the Pell Grant upon college entry demonstrating significant financial need. Many of these students were first-generation students. They have been successful but the specifics of how they collectively found such success was unknown. …
Camp, Combat, And Campaign: North Carolina's Confederate Experience, Peter R. Thomas Jr.
Camp, Combat, And Campaign: North Carolina's Confederate Experience, Peter R. Thomas Jr.
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This research examines a sample of North Carolina Confederates as they transitioned from citizen to soldier between 1861 and 1863 during the American Civil War, and it questions how levels of commitment and devotion emerged during this transformation. North Carolina Confederates not only faced physical and emotional challenges as they transitioned from citizen to soldier, but also encountered social obstacles due to the strict social order of the Old South. Orthodoxy maintains this social dissent hindered any form of solidarity among North Carolina Confederates. The question remains, though, why did so many North Carolinians remain committed to the Confederacy until …
The Role Of Neurotensin Receptors On Visceral Pain And Activity Levels In Mice., Christopher J. Walker
The Role Of Neurotensin Receptors On Visceral Pain And Activity Levels In Mice., Christopher J. Walker
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the effects of neurotensin (NT) receptor sites on the sensation of visceral pain. Previous work by researchers has found, through the use of NT analogs, that visceral pain is closely associated with NT receptor 2 (NTSR2). This study tested 70 genetically modified mice. The mice were either missing NTSR1, NTSR2, or were wild-type (WT) mice that were not missing any NT receptors. The mice were injected intraperitoneally with either saline or acetic acid then observed for a 60 minute period and writhing behavior was recorded. Twenty four hours later activity levels were recorded in the open field …

Examination Of Exceptional Student Educators’ Personal Practical Theories And The Implications For Practice, Melissa Jewell Call
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study examined exceptional student educators’ (ESE) personal practical theories (PPTs) and how they impact complex decision-making when it comes to students with disabilities and their families. A case study methodology was selected to explore how four ESE teachers and leaders developed their PPTs as well as how they planned, interacted, and reflected upon decisions made during one workweek. The guiding questions of this study were: what are the PPTs of ESE leaders and teachers, what factors influence the development of PPTs, and how do PPTs impact special educators’ work with students with disabilities? To address these questions, four participants …

Humorous Developments: Ridicule, Recognition, And The Development Of Agency, Kevin Andrew Afflerbach
Humorous Developments: Ridicule, Recognition, And The Development Of Agency, Kevin Andrew Afflerbach
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis I examine various theories of humor to establish an account of the functional roles of humor in social interaction and agentive development. These roles are integrated into a view of agency developed by G.H. Mead, and further refined by the recognition theory of Axel Honneth. The core thesis is: Humor is under-examined as an aspect of human interaction, because it plays such an integral role in individual agency and social development. Understanding how humor works helps to explain how agents are formed through the internalization of the expectations of others via processes of recognition, either positively or …
Self-Monitoring And Romantic Relationships: Individual Differences In Romantic Jealousy, Tiffany Lucille Andolina
Self-Monitoring And Romantic Relationships: Individual Differences In Romantic Jealousy, Tiffany Lucille Andolina
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
To extend the research on self-monitoring and romantic relationships, we explored the connection between self-monitoring and romantic jealousy using a between-subjects design. We hypothesized high self-monitors (like men) would find sexual infidelity more distressing than emotional infidelity, whereas low self-monitors (like women) would find emotional infidelity more distressing than sexual infidelity. Participants completed the 25-item Self-Monitoring Scale (Snyder, 1974) and 6 hypothetical infidelity scenarios (Buss et al., 1999). To statistically control for third variables, participants also completed the 11-item Sociosexual Orientation Inventory (Gangestad & Simpson, 1991). Although we found a main effect for self-monitoring in romantic jealousy, these results did …
Non-Lethal Methods For Assessing Reproductive Status In Bonnethead Sharks (Sphyrna Tiburo), Brenda Carol Anderson
Non-Lethal Methods For Assessing Reproductive Status In Bonnethead Sharks (Sphyrna Tiburo), Brenda Carol Anderson
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Reproductive biology is a necessary element for the management of elasmobranch fisheries. Traditionally, characterization of elasmobranch reproduction has involved lethal sampling to examine gross reproductive structures and development of embryos. However, this method is counterproductive to the conservation of shark populations. One non-lethal alternative is the measurement of serum hormones, which often vary according to reproductive events. Radioimmunoassay (RIA) has been used to measure hormone concentrations in reproductive endocrinology, but can be problematic for researchers. Alternatively, chemiluminescence immunoassays (CLIA) are routinely used for measuring circulating hormone concentrations in low-volume, non-extracted human serum samples. However these assays have not been previously …
Role Tension In The Academy: A Philosophical Inquiry Into Faculty Teaching And Research, Nicolas Michaud
Role Tension In The Academy: A Philosophical Inquiry Into Faculty Teaching And Research, Nicolas Michaud
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation seeks to understand the conjunction of faculty roles as teachers and as researchers. This understanding is pursued through philosophical analysis. Discourse ethics, in particular, is used as a framework by which to best understand the roles played by faculty and if the roles of teacher and researcher are, in fact, commensurable. The purpose of the work is two-fold: 1) to develop a construct that may be used by future researchers to better understand the roles played by faculty, and 2) to suggest a best-construct that enables future researchers to propose how actual lived roles should be instantiated in …
The Difference Principle In Rawls: Pragmatic Or Infertile?, Farzaneh Esmaeili
The Difference Principle In Rawls: Pragmatic Or Infertile?, Farzaneh Esmaeili
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis attempts to provide a coherent view of the idea of ‘justice as fairness’ and, in particular, the ‘difference principle’ expressed by John Rawls in A Theory of Justice. The main focus of the thesis is the difference principle and its limits. Rawls’s conception of ‘justice as fairness’ is based on the thought experiment of the ‘original position’ in which people, considered as free and equal, deliberate under an imagined ‘veil of ignorance,’ i.e. not knowing which social roles or status they would occupy in their society. Rawls then argues that in the original position people come up with …

The Perceptions Of Black Teachers Regarding Their Decision To Teach And Satisfaction With Their Work Experiences In Predominantly White K-12 Schools, Stephen Richardson
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of Black teachers regarding their decision to teach and the satisfaction with their work experiences in predominantly White K-12 schools. A total of 118 teachers who were identified as Black and as employees of a predominantly White school were invited to complete a survey via email. A total of 56 did in fact respond. Of that 56, only 51 respondents provided enough usable data (which is defined as a survey completed in full). The data, which came from a Perceptions Survey, meant to report levels of job satisfaction as it …
Family Stressors And Problem Behaviors Of At-Risk Elementary School Girls: A Latent Class Analysis, Cameron M. Perrine
Family Stressors And Problem Behaviors Of At-Risk Elementary School Girls: A Latent Class Analysis, Cameron M. Perrine
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In order to obtain a closer look into the relationships between an at-risk populations’ family stressors and future school problem behaviors, a Latent Class Analysis (LCA) of family stressor variables was performed on at-risk elementary school girls from Health Zone 1. Participants were 308 girls with a mean age of 8.79 years. The dataset was inherited from the Delores Barr Weaver Policy Center and analyses were run to uncover latent classes of family stressors. Class membership was then utilized to predict future behavioral referrals and suspensions from school. A total of three classes emerged from the LCA: “Exposure to Trauma”; …
Misinformation And Need For Cognition: How They Affect False Memories, Lilyeth Antonio
Misinformation And Need For Cognition: How They Affect False Memories, Lilyeth Antonio
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of false memories and Need for Cognition (NFC). The relationship was examined using a typical misinformation paradigm where participants viewed a video clip which depicted a museum burglary and were later presented with an auditory narrative that contained misleading information about the video they previously saw. Half of the participants were exposed to warnings of misinformation. Additionally, the effect of question type (e.g., central, peripheral, and neutral) was taken into account. A main effect for NFC was found indicating that high NFC individuals had fewer false memories for the …

Transitioning to adulthood is a challenging experience for all young adults, but especially for those who are living with HIV/AIDS and residing in low income, urban areas. Young adults, particularly those who live in low income, urban areas, have the highest rate of new HIV cases among all age groups in the United States. The purpose of this study was to examine the lived experiences of a purposive sample of young adults living with HIV/AIDS who resided in a selected low income, urban area in order to better understand how ecological and health factors presented opportunities and challenges for resilience …
Effects Of The Exotic Red Imported Fire Ant (Solenopsis Invicta) On The Growth And Survival Of The Threatened Hooded Pitcher Plant (Sarracenia Minor), Edward Marques
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Plants and insects are some of the most biodiverse groups in the world and are constantly interacting. One unique interaction that has been observed occurs between carnivorous plants and insects; some plant species are capable of capturing and digesting insects for nutrients. Despite preying on these insects, there are cases where such interactions can been viewed as mutualistic. For instance, a nectar reward is produced by the plant to attract insects, and during visitation insects may fall prey to these plants. Additionally, carnivorous myrmecophytic plants may receive an added indirect benefit in the form of reduced herbivory, since ants have …
The Dual Role Of Self-Enhancement : Protection And Stigma, Corina Evelyn Klein
The Dual Role Of Self-Enhancement : Protection And Stigma, Corina Evelyn Klein
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Despite the availability of effective treatment options for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), these treatments are highly under-utilized. One of the most cited barriers to treatment among people with PTSD symptoms is public stigma. In fact, the majority of the population experiences a potentially traumatic event (PTE) in their lifetime and should contribute to an assumption of a lack of stigma toward people with PTSD symptoms. Yet, it may be that the stigma perceived by people with PTSD symptoms is more nuanced than what is seen in stigma for other disorders. More often than not, people who experience a PTE will …
