Characteristics Of Health Parameters And The Digital Cushion In Horses, Mattia Ann Gunkelman Jan 2015

Characteristics Of Health Parameters And The Digital Cushion In Horses, Mattia Ann Gunkelman

Animal Sciences

Studies examining lameness conditions and health concerns for horse owners are important for education and future research. To investigate this, a survey and two studies were conducted. For the survey, a total of 152 responses were collected. Horse owners ranked lameness as the top concern (35%), followed by colic (21%). Lameness issues were ranked as the top (37%) veterinary expense. To validate a non-invasive ultrasound technique for imaging the digital cushion, ten cadaver limbs were evaluated. There was a strong correlation (r = 0.73; p = 0.02) between ultrasound and actual measurement. To establish baseline values, 25 mature, stock-type horses …

Utah’S Role In Protecting The Mormon Trail During The Civil War, Kenneth L. Alford Ph.D. Jan 2015

Utah’S Role In Protecting The Mormon Trail During The Civil War, Kenneth L. Alford Ph.D.

Faculty Publications

This chapter (from the 2015 book “Far Away in the West: Reflections on the Mormon Pioneer Trail” published by the Brigham Young University Religious Studies Center) sets the stage for Utah Territory’s role protecting the Mormon Trail during the Civil War by outlining the Utah War (1857-1858). This essay begins by comparing and contracting Washington, DC’s wartime interest in the trail with that of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Utah Territory. The essay then outlines the changing parties who were responsible for the trail between 1861 and 1865 – the U.S. Army (spring-summer 1861), no one …

Cully Park Remediating The Willamette Waterfront Of Portland, Kelsey Windrum Jan 2015

Cully Park Remediating The Willamette Waterfront Of Portland, Kelsey Windrum

Landscape Architecture Theses

This thesis is a remediation greenway project with an emphasis on waterfront revitalization and phytoremediation. Researched greenways focus on the conservation, recreation, and non-motorized transportation of a maintained corridor of protected open space, however, very little research focuses on the incorporation of phytoremediation into these protected greenways. This thesis’s research explores the relationship between phytoremediation and a waterfront park through studied principles comprising of: ecological movement, remediation educational practices, and transportation and circulation connections. These aspects are implemented through the design of a multi-level park, linking the Willamette River in the South Waterfront District of Portland to existing trail systems and …

Making Strategic Human Capital Relevant: A Time-Sensitive Opportunity, David Kryscynski, Dave Ulrich Jan 2015

Making Strategic Human Capital Relevant: A Time-Sensitive Opportunity, David Kryscynski, Dave Ulrich

Faculty Publications

The domain of strategic human capital is emerging at the intersection of strategy and strategic human resource management. Because it is still in the development phase, its core underlying assumptions have not yet solidified. This presents a unique and time-sensitive opportunity to explore and challenge these core assumptions and, specifically, to evaluate whether these assumptions mesh with the lived experiences of practicing managers. We argue that now is the time for the field to ground itself in practical phenomena so that its insights moving forward can be both academically rigorous and practically relevant. In this paper we illustrate the problems …

Toward A Synthesis Of Hr Competency Models: The Common Hr "Food Groups", Dave Ulrich, Wayne Brockbank, Mike Ulrich, David Kryscynski

Faculty Publications

As businesses face unprecedented rates of volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA), business leaders increasingly recognize the importance of talent (workforce, competencies, skills, abilities), leadership (senior leader and leadership team), and organization (workplace, capability, culture, processes, systems) as sources of competitiveness. Competitors can readily copy access to capital, strategic intent, and operational efficiency but they have a more difficult time copying talent, leadership, and organizational practices. As a result of this increased visibility, HR issues have received increased attention in the C-suite.

Beyond The Expansion Framework: How Same-Sex Marriage Changes The Institutional Meaning Of Marriage And Heterosexual Men's Conception Of Marriage, Alan J. Hawkins, Jason S. Carroll Jan 2015

Beyond The Expansion Framework: How Same-Sex Marriage Changes The Institutional Meaning Of Marriage And Heterosexual Men's Conception Of Marriage, Alan J. Hawkins, Jason S. Carroll

Faculty Publications

Social institutions profoundly affect human behavior. They provide human relationships with meaning, norms, and patterns, and in doing so encourage and guide conduct; they are the "humanly devised constraints that shape human interaction." That is their function. And when the definitions and norms that constitute a social institution change, the behaviors and interactions that the institution shapes also change.

The Free And Restricted Diffusion Of Silicon Nanocrystal Clusters, Ahmed Bahgat Elbaradei Jan 2015

The Free And Restricted Diffusion Of Silicon Nanocrystal Clusters, Ahmed Bahgat Elbaradei

Materials and Nanotechnology

Biological applications for silicon nanocrystals (SiNCs) have recently gained more attention because of silicon’s low toxicity. But, to be able to use SiNCs in applications such as biological sensors, labeling or drug delivery we need to understand their transport in different environments and their interaction with cell membrane. I will review some different methods for the synthesis of, and I will give an accounting of encapsulating SiNCs with PEGylated phospholipids to make them soluble in water. I also studied the free diffusion of these micelles in water, as well as their restricted diffusion and interaction with giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs). …

Rigidly Foldable Origami Twists, Thomas A. Evans, Robert J. Lang, Spencer P. Magleby, Larry L. Howell Jan 2015

Rigidly Foldable Origami Twists, Thomas A. Evans, Robert J. Lang, Spencer P. Magleby, Larry L. Howell

Faculty Publications

Rigid foldability is an important characteristic of origami structures that becomes significant with non-paper materials. A rigidly foldable origami tessellation is one where the sectors remain rigid and all deflection occurs at the crease lines. Many rigidly foldable patterns have only one degree of freedom, making them potentially useful for deployable structures. Methods have been developed to construct rigidly foldable origami tessellations using materials with finite thickness based on zero-thickness rigidly foldable patterns. [Tachi 11].

Origami methods have been considered for application in deployable structures such as solar panels [Miura 85] [Zirbel et al. 13] and sterile shrouds [Francis et …

Electrowetting Force And Velocity Dependence On Fluid Surface Energy, Qi Ni, Daniel E. Capecci, Nathan B. Crane Jan 2015

Electrowetting Force And Velocity Dependence On Fluid Surface Energy, Qi Ni, Daniel E. Capecci, Nathan B. Crane

Faculty Publications

Electrowetting on Dielectric is a phenomenon in which the shape and apparent contact angle of a droplet changes when an electric field is applied across the droplet interface. If the field is asymmetric with respect to the droplet, then a net force can be applied to the droplet. In this work, we have measured the electrowetting force by confining the droplet shape beneath a glass plate and measuring the force on the plate. The force was measured as a function of voltage for a range of fluids with different surface energy. Measured forces show excellent agreement with predictions based on …

Faculty Publications

To date, there have been nearly 100 papers published on metazoan parasites of Antarctic fishes, but there has not yet been any compilation of a species list of fish parasites for this large geographic area. Herein, we provide a list of all documented occurrences of monogenean, cestode, digenean, acanthocephalan, nematode, and hirudinean parasites of Antarctic fishes. The list includes nearly 250 parasite species found in 142 species of host fishes. It is likely that there are more species of fish parasites, which are yet to be documented from Antarctic waters.

False Memories In Depression: Vulnerability Factor Or Symptom?, Samantha Kathleen Myhre Jan 2015

False Memories In Depression: Vulnerability Factor Or Symptom?, Samantha Kathleen Myhre

Psychology

False memories are sometimes generated when recalling words from lists in which the words are conceptually related. People think of concepts that are associated with the lists but which were never presented. Previous research has shown that sad mood reduces false memories whereas depression increases false memories, especially to negative information. It is possible that false memories represent a cognitive characteristic that is present prior to depression. I hypothesized that depressed individuals and those vulnerable to depression would falsely recall more negative critical lures than controls. Depressed and vulnerable individuals were not expected to perform differently from each other. The …

Manipulating Cattle And Deer Foraging Behaviors For The Consumption Of Leafy Spurge And Canada Thistle, Melissa Catherine Mccann Jan 2015

Manipulating Cattle And Deer Foraging Behaviors For The Consumption Of Leafy Spurge And Canada Thistle, Melissa Catherine Mccann

Range Science

This study tested targeted grazing weeds with cattle and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). Using forage manipulation techniques, we attempted to encourage cattle and white-tailed deer to graze weeds. Cattle were encouraged to target graze leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula L.). We established that cattle will attempt to consume leafy spurge from feed bunks but not from pasture. Two projects were developed to test targeted grazing of Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense) by white-tailed deer. The first project was a behavior study using a rationed pelleted feed with Canada thistle. The second an attractant study involved testing two types of molasses (Molasses and …

Impact Of Wildfire And Targeted Grazing Effects On Northern Great Plains Range And Pasture Lands, Katherine Claire-Ann Kral Jan 2015

Impact Of Wildfire And Targeted Grazing Effects On Northern Great Plains Range And Pasture Lands, Katherine Claire-Ann Kral

Range Science

The Grand River District in South Dakota has a high proportion of underutilized crested wheatgrass within native rangelands. Prescribed fire is rarely used for management; although, there is a strong evolutionary relationship with fire and grazing. Our project entailed two studies, the first looking at targeted grazing with cattle and second the effects of an April wildfire on plant species composition, basal cover, and phytomass production. The wildfire and targeted grazing did not affect (p > 0.05) plant species composition or phytomass production four and 16 months after treatment (MAT). Targeted grazing increased (p ≤ 0.05) crested wheatgrass utilization, but did …

How The Perception Of God As A Transcendent Moral Authority Influences Marital Connection Among American Christians, Toshi Shichida, David C. Dollahite, Jason S. Carroll Jan 2015

How The Perception Of God As A Transcendent Moral Authority Influences Marital Connection Among American Christians, Toshi Shichida, David C. Dollahite, Jason S. Carroll

Faculty Publications

Dynamics that link individuals' perceptions of God as a transcendent moral authority and marital connection were analyzed in depth using qualitative data from a sample of 48 Christian spouses from California and New England. Thirsty-six individuals expressed their perception of God as a transcendent moral authority, and compared to 12 who did not, they conveyed three distinctive religious-marital dynamics. These were all processes to promote marital unity that engaged God, namely: (1) spouses modified their individual behavior in marriage with reference to their God model, (2) they shared as a couple the goal to obey God together, and (3) they …

Genetic Mapping Of Quantitative Trait Loci For Resistance To Wheat Tan Spot Using Two Bi-Parental Populations, Gayan Kanishka Kariyawasam Jan 2015

Genetic Mapping Of Quantitative Trait Loci For Resistance To Wheat Tan Spot Using Two Bi-Parental Populations, Gayan Kanishka Kariyawasam

Plant Pathology

Tan spot, caused by Pyrenophora tritici-repentis (Ptr), is an economically important disease on both common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and durum (T. turgidum L. ssp. durum). Genetics of resistance to tan spot is complicated and needs to be further investigated for breeding cultivars with more complete resistance. The objective of this study was to map and characterize genetic resistance in two wheat bi-parental popuations. In Louise × Penawawa population, four quantative trait loci (QTL) were identified and the major race-nonspecific QTL, designated as QTs.zhl-3BL, was shown to have epistatis and additive effect on Ptr ToxA-Tsn1, Ptr ToxC-Tsc1 interactions, respectively. Nine …

Ellucidation Of Rpg4/Rpg5-Mediated Resistance Against Wheat Stem Rust In Barley, Xue Wang

Plant Pathology

Wheat stem rust, caused by Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici (Pgt), is a major threat to barley and caused devastating reductions in yield and economic losses. The barley line Q21861 was identified as the best source of resistance to the potential threat posed by the highly virulent Pgt race TTKSK. Resistance to TTKSK was mapped to the telomeric region of chromosome 5HL, now designated as the rpg4-mediated resistance locus (RMRL). RMRL has been delimited into two tightly linked yet distinct loci, designated as RMRL1 and RMRL2. Three genes (HvRga1, Rpg5, and HvAdf3) were found at RMRL1 while gene(s) at RMRL2 …

Predictors Of Prosocial Behavior And Civic Involvement: Differences In Middle Aged And Older Adults, Jennifer Rose Wenner Jan 2015

Predictors Of Prosocial Behavior And Civic Involvement: Differences In Middle Aged And Older Adults, Jennifer Rose Wenner

Human Development and Family Science

Generativity is important for wellbeing throughout middle and late life. Therefore, it is crucial to understand what contributes to generativity during these life stages. Parenting and work are common ways middle age adults engage generatively. However, older adults may not have these opportunities. Those who are grittier, have a greater sense of religious importance, and a stronger sense of community cohesion may be more inclined to engage in prosocial behaviors and civic activities to stay generative. The current study examined whether age group moderated the relation between these variables and prosocial behavior and civic involvement. Data were used from 188 …

From Alcelaphus To Zapus: Conservation Of Modern Mammalian Populations, Kathryn Anne Preston Jan 2015

From Alcelaphus To Zapus: Conservation Of Modern Mammalian Populations, Kathryn Anne Preston

Biological Sciences

Conservation priorities are increasingly important in the face of modern human activities. Anthropogenic activities such as deforestation, pollution, and climate change have negative impacts on all vertebrates. In chapter 1, I examine whether there are relationships among density dependence, population size variability, and extinction risk in mammals to see whether these parameters are indicative of population health. Also included were analyses of how body mass and age to maturity affect those three measures. On a smaller, more local scale, I asked questions regarding biodiversity of small mammals in a highly fragmented environment, the tallgrass prairie. In chapter 2, I examined …

Symbiotic Beachfront Design : Sharing Southeast Florida's Coast With Sea Turtles, Luke Champa Jan 2015

Symbiotic Beachfront Design : Sharing Southeast Florida's Coast With Sea Turtles, Luke Champa

Landscape Architecture Theses

This urban beachfront design project is a unique approach to sustainable beachfront design development because it focuses on creating a symbiotic relationship between humans and a sensitive turtle habitat, rather than relying solely on traditional habitat conservation. Through research of the nesting and living habits of the loggerhead, green, and leatherback sea turtles this project shows how to develop a place for human beach activity that also serves as a safer coastal nesting ground for sea turtles. Designing to variables that can affect the sea turtles, while maintaining beach access for people presents a challenge, but the results may have …

Structurally Diverse Arabinoxylan Hydrolyzates: Their Activity As Immunomodulators And Their Effect On Growth Of Bacteroidetes, Mihiri Marini Mendis

Plant Sciences

Arabinoxylan (AX) is a plant polysaccharide which consists of a xylan backbone on which arabinose is substituted. Thirty structurally different wheat arabinoxylan hydrolyzates (AXH) were prepared by means of different combinations of xylanase (Cellvibrio japonicas xylanase (CJX) and Aspergillus niger xylanase (ANX)) and arabinofuranosidase (Bifidobacterium adolescentis arabinofuranosidase (BAF) and Clostridium thermocellum arabinofuranosidase (CAF)). The AXH were analyzed using GC-FID, GC-MS, 1H-NMR and SEC-MALS techniques. In general, the AXH had high proportion of unsubstituted xylose and lesser amount of di- or mono-substituted xylose. The average molecular weights of the AXH varied between 0.78-5.64 million Da. Between the two xylanases, ANX might …

Molecular Mapping Of Fusarium Head Blight Resistance In Two Adapted Spring Wheat Cultivars, Ahmed Elfatih Amin Eldoliefy

Plant Sciences

Releasing bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) cultivars with resistance to Fusarium head blight (FHB) disease can be endangered by narrowing the variation in genetic sources. However, resistance to FHB rely on five different types. FHB resistance types I, II, III, IV and V were assessed in field and greenhouse under multiple locations and years experiment’s combination. In our study, the genetic of FHB resistance in two widely cultivated hard red spring wheat varieties (‘Glenn’ and ‘Parshall’) were dissected. The specific objectives of the study were to generate recombinant inbred lines (RIL) populations, phenotypic assessment for FHB resistance, different informative genotypic marker …

Student Interactions During Study Abroad In Jordan, Dan P. Dewey, Jennifer Brown, R. Kirk Belnap Jan 2015

Student Interactions During Study Abroad In Jordan, Dan P. Dewey, Jennifer Brown, R. Kirk Belnap

Faculty Publications

For many years, researchers have assumed that studying abroad produces “fluent” speakers of a given language. However, in the past several decades, researchers have recognized that learners do not always avail themselves of opportunities to interact in the target language, and even when they do, success is not guaranteed. Scholars have begun to recognize that the quality of learners’ interactions during study abroad may be more important for ultimate language gains than the quantity of language use. This qualitative study documents the interactions of 82 students of Arabic studying in Amman, Jordan, as well as the factors that influenced the …

Toward A Practical Civic Piety: Mitt Romney, Barack Obama, And The Race For National Priest, Richard Benjamin Crosby Jan 2015

Toward A Practical Civic Piety: Mitt Romney, Barack Obama, And The Race For National Priest, Richard Benjamin Crosby

Faculty Publications

In 2008, two of the leading presidential candidates emerged from controversial, outsider religious groups—Mormonism and the black church tradition. Dogged by ongoing questions from the media, each candidate produced a high-profıle public address. In this article, I argue that Mitt Romney’s “Faith in America” and Barack Obama’s “A More Perfect Union” craft competing visions for American civic piety. Drawing on recent literature in the area of practical piety, I read the speeches as evidence that civic piety may be more than a subordinating, pragmatic agreement between church and state. It may instead be read as a spiritually substantive space of …

Elicited Imitation For Brazilian Portuguese, Deryle W. Lonsdale, Jarrett Finlinson Lever Jan 2015

Elicited Imitation For Brazilian Portuguese, Deryle W. Lonsdale, Jarrett Finlinson Lever

Faculty Publications

Elicited imitation (EI) is an approach to measuring oral proficiency that consists of having test takers hear a sentence and repeat the sentence exactly as they heard it. Though indirect in nature, EI has successfully shown to correlate with previously established oral proficiency examinations, such as the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) (Lonsdale and Christensen 2014, Matsushita and Lonsdale 2014, Millard 2011, Thompson 2013). This paper discusses the development, administration, and evaluation of an EI test for the Brazilian Portuguese language. We first discuss the relevant background of oral proficiency examination and EI. After presenting the pertinent research questions, we explain …
