Ecomusicology: Back To The Roots Of Sound/Music And Environmental Sustainability, Tiffany Challe
Ecomusicology: Back To The Roots Of Sound/Music And Environmental Sustainability, Tiffany Challe
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
We are currently living in the midst of a global warming crisis, and running against the clock to counter the rapid depletion of natural resources in an increasingly technology-run world. The first step toward sustainability is to care for our world that is full of vibrant ecosystems and that we must work together to preserve. While the visual arts have served as a cogent platform for the environmental movement, this paper will argue that sound and music have been vastly overlooked in sustainability topics. Place-making music can capture a place's unique spirit and connect listeners with their local ecologies. Therein …
Mental Discipline And Musical Meaning, Alice Harriet Jones
Mental Discipline And Musical Meaning, Alice Harriet Jones
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Musical meaning, or what a musical experience communicates to a listener, is predicated on a shared habitus of listening between the musical creator (i.e., composer, performer, or improviser) and the listener. The meaning a listener takes away from a musical experience is partly dependent on the vessel transmitting it (i.e., who is performing, the quality of performance, or the visual aspects of performance), and a musical creator's actions are the result of his or her training, past experiences, enculturation, attentional focus, and bodily control in the heightened mental state in which creativity occurs. Even in traditions that consider the musician …
Educational Psychology In Undergraduate Music Education Degree Programs In Nasm-Accredited Institutions: Topics Covered And The Emphases Of Those Topics In Music Methods Courses, Ben E. Light
Student Theses and Dissertations
The purposes of this study were to (1) describe educational psychology course offerings within undergraduate music teacher training programs at National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) accredited institutions and (2) to examine the emphasis of common educational psychology topics in music methods courses. The study was guided by three research questions: (1) How are educational psychology courses situated (i.e. credit weight, course level) in the undergraduate music education degree program; (2) What are the demographics for the institutions and the music methods instructors sampled; and (3) How do music methods instructors emphasize educational psychology topics commonly cited in the …

Three Folk Music Suites From Romania And "Hora Furtuna" By Grigoras Dinicu, Arranged For String Quartet, Vasilica Ionut Cosarca
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Folk music represents an important part of the national heritages of most cultures around the world. Today the typical folk ensemble includes a combination of traditional and modern instruments, and performances are given to accompany important life events (birth, marriage, death) or at music festivals dedicated to the genre. However, traditional music is very rarely performed in the concert hall, mostly because of the lack of literature. This compilation comes as a response to the string quartets who may wish to explore new possibilities and add authentically sounding pieces to their repertoire. The selections in this book are designed to challenge …

'More Divine Than Human': Early Tudor Plainchant And Polyphony Of The Lenten Compline Office In The Use Of Salisbury, 1485-1558, Mark Wayland Ardrey-Graves
Dissertations, 2014-2019
Codified at Salisbury Cathedral in southern England during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the Use of Salisbury, or Sarum Use, was an influential model of church structure and liturgy across England until the middle of the sixteenth century. Within this model, certain distinctive features are observable, including patterns of ritual observance in such liturgies as the Office of Compline, prayed at the end of the day. This study examines the structure of the Sarum Compline Office, and the phenomenon of polyphonic music created for its observance, during the forty-day penitential season of Lent. This thesis specifically explores ways in which …

Traditional Cultural Properties And Casita Rincón Criollo, Virginia Denise Siegel
Traditional Cultural Properties And Casita Rincón Criollo, Virginia Denise Siegel
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
According to the 1990 bulletin issued by the National Park Service, traditional cultural properties (TCPs) derive their significance from cultural practices or beliefs of living communities. This thesis centers on a case study of the nomination of Casita Rincón Criollo to the National Register of Historic Places as a TCP. The nomination is a collaborative project of Place Matters in New York City and Western Kentucky University, initiated by the American Folklore Society Working Group in Folklore and Historic Preservation Policy. Casita Rincón Criollo has several issues that make nomination to the National Register tricky. Casitas are small “houses,” typically …

Werner Jaegerhuber’S Messe Sur Les Airs Vodouesques Or Messe Folklorique Haïtienne: A Performance Edition, Canes Nicolas
Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances
Originally written for solo soprano with choir and organ, Werner Jaegerhuber completed this work in 1953, and his close friend and artistic collaborator, Louis Maximilien, commissioned it for the sesquicentennial of Haiti’s independence on January 1, 1954. However, since there are no published scores or even a reliable manuscript of this piece, what has been kept in the archives of the Société de recherche et de diffusion de la musique Haïtienne in Montreal, Canada are two dissimilar scores by unknown sources. One is the choral and organ version, which was made by a professional copyist in the 1950’s (judging by …
I Want To Be In That Number: A Song Profile Of "When The Saints Go Marching In", Gregory H. Jacks
I Want To Be In That Number: A Song Profile Of "When The Saints Go Marching In", Gregory H. Jacks
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
“When the Saints Go Marching In” has never been subject to a sustained study of its origins, disseminations, and current manifestations. A study like this, focused on a song’s perceptions via various viewpoints through time, is typically referred to as a song profile; a form of reception history specifically concentrated on a single musical composition. “When the Saints Go Marching In,” also known as “Saints” or “The Saints,” is an African-American spiritual typically listed as a traditional in most songbooks without a composer.[1] I have laid out this paper into four sections, one for each period of the song’s …
From Paper To Podium: Exploring The Gap Between University Training And Professional Experience In Orchestral Conductors, Rachel L. Waddell
From Paper To Podium: Exploring The Gap Between University Training And Professional Experience In Orchestral Conductors, Rachel L. Waddell
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In African polyrhythmic drum circles there is a proverb that exemplifies the necessity of common vision and community in group musical performance: “I am because we are.” This simple ideal is ostensibly mirrored in the western institution of the symphonic orchestra, an ensemble of many that nevertheless must arrive at one, shared interpretation of a piece of music. The structure of the orchestra is a complicated hierarchy with section players at its base, followed by principals, the concertmaster, and finally the conductor. Although conductors are the public face of leadership in orchestras, if they alienate the musicians they will have …
Beyond Harmony: Incorporating Rhythmic Elements Of Jazz Improvisation Through Pedagogy And Curriculum, Jonathan M. Campbell
Beyond Harmony: Incorporating Rhythmic Elements Of Jazz Improvisation Through Pedagogy And Curriculum, Jonathan M. Campbell
Dissertations
Jazz studies programs have become established within the realm of formal education systems and currently play an increasingly important role in the development of jazz education as well as providing means for jazz students to study improvisation. Among the array of college-level jazz courses such as jazz history, jazz arranging and composition, jazz theory, and jazz ensembles, jazz improvisation sequences are often the focal point within jazz programs. However, as previous researchers have pointed out, jazz improvisation pedagogy is almost exclusively focused on chord/scale systems and harmonic based elements of improvisation. This has led to a pedagogical model that neglects …
The Creation Of Fear Through Censorship: Repression Of Artistic Freedom In The Music Of The Syrian Revolution, Rebecca Aliah Ajamoughli
The Creation Of Fear Through Censorship: Repression Of Artistic Freedom In The Music Of The Syrian Revolution, Rebecca Aliah Ajamoughli
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
"God, Syria, freedom, and that is all." These four words embody the goals of the Syrian Revolution. Yet, there is one key element of this chant that raises questions surrounding its meaning: freedom. For decades, the people of Syria have been subjected to restricted freedom by the Assad regime-especialIy musicalIy. The regime has artfulIy used music to legitimize its claim to the country. This utilization varies from early-learned pro-Baath chants to the monitoring of all performances held in the country. As Lisa Wedeen says in her work Ambiguities of Domination, "[this control of culture] isolates Syrians from one another, and …
Gideon Klein's String Trio: A Study, Robyn Clair Savitzky
Gideon Klein's String Trio: A Study, Robyn Clair Savitzky
Open Access Dissertations
This essay explores Gideon Klein’s identity through a study of the String Trio he composed at Terezín, a Nazi concentration camp outside of Prague. How did labels placed on this work influence his identity and music? How do modern classifications affect the music today? Works composed in concentration camps are often labeled “Holocaust music.” Today, such works are frequently programed in memorial concerts, a framework which lends itself to an oversimplified understanding of music’s role in the Holocaust. Through examining Klein’s String Trio within a performance and musicological context, this essay aims to answer questions about identity in music and …
A Comparison Of The Improvisational Styles Of Trombonists Conrad Herwig And Steve Davis, Andrew Hamilton
A Comparison Of The Improvisational Styles Of Trombonists Conrad Herwig And Steve Davis, Andrew Hamilton
Open Access Dissertations
The purpose of this essay is to analyze the playing styles of jazz trombonists Conrad Herwig and Steve Davis, and compare them side-by-side. Five improvised solos by each player are transcribed. The transcriptions are selected from two albums that the trombonists recorded together, Conrad Herwig’s Osteology and A Jones for Bones Tones. The melodic, harmonic, rhythmic, and stylistic contents of the solos are compared, in order to determine in what ways the two subjects are similar, and in what ways they are different. Musical examples are cited throughout the analysis, and the full transcriptions are included in the appendix, as …

Teaching out of her Upper West Side New York City apartment, Laurie Frink was known for her uncanny skill in the analysis and prescription of trumpet technique. Ms. Frink was a master teacher for nearly 25 years and fostered a battalion of students who unanimously hold her, and her method, in the highest regard. On July 13, 2013, Laurie Frink lost her battle against cancer and passed away at age 61. Her death created a vacuum of information regarding her trumpet specific method and approach to teaching the trumpet. The goal of this research is to analyze a large sample …
“Mi Alma Cantará”: Tracing Issues In Music Education Within The Colonial And Contemporary Latin American Church, Kerry Digiacomo
“Mi Alma Cantará”: Tracing Issues In Music Education Within The Colonial And Contemporary Latin American Church, Kerry Digiacomo
Senior Honors Theses
Music education and institutionalized Christianity have been criticized by historians and ethnomusicologists for their role in the domination and transformation of indigenous Latin American cultures since the late 15th century. However, indigenous peoples, including Amerindians as well as more recent mestizo and Ladino people groups, have also taken an active role in transforming European musics to reflect an emic understanding of their own cultural identity. Music education within the Latin American church has provided an interface for these complex interactions between foreign and native cultural influences. This paper will explore the connections between colonial and contemporary-era music education movements in …

The Intersections Of Music, Love, And Worship, Jacob C. Wessel
Senior Honors Theses
When a right understanding of the doctrine of love infiltrates the art of music in the event of corporate worship, an opportunity arises for a unique synergism of knowledge, emotion and relationships. These qualities are paramount in the doctrine of love and practice of corporate worship, and they are especially encouraged by the powers of music. An exploration of these three aspects of love—knowledge, emotion and relationships—is here provided with special attention to the opportunity music and worship provide for intersections between them.

Contextualization: Tanzanian Maasai Culture And The Implications For Worship And Women’S Ministry, Alexandra T. Morgan
Contextualization: Tanzanian Maasai Culture And The Implications For Worship And Women’S Ministry, Alexandra T. Morgan
Senior Honors Theses
Maasai religion, music, and cultural customs have a definite impact on the methodology of missions and relations with the people of their tribes, specifically in the areas of worship and women’s ministry. Maasai tribes have specific cultural needs that require ministry different from those usually employed in Western methodology. There are theological foundations of worship and women’s ministry that must be understood in order to properly execute the process of contextualization as it applies to the Christian gospel. An analysis of the history, religion, rituals, gender roles, and music of Maasai tribes in Tanzania coupled with an understanding of contextualization …
Sailors In British Broadside Ballads, 1800-1850, Georgina Prineppi
Sailors In British Broadside Ballads, 1800-1850, Georgina Prineppi
Open Access Theses
The broadside ballad was an important form of popular street music that flourished from the 16th to the 19th centuries in the British Isles, Continental Europe and North America. During the Napoleonic Wars, Britain’s fighting sailor—commonly known as “Jack Tar”—became a prominent subject of the country’s broadside ballad tradition, thanks to songwriters like Charles Dibdin, who forged a new and compelling image for the sailor, depicting him as Britain’s brave, patriotic, and loyal defender. In the early years of the nineteenth century, hundreds of broadside ballads about the noble Jack Tar were written and circulated in Britain, extolling his virtues …

Louisville, Kentucky, has a rich musical heritage, including an underground scene that influenced the sound of not only punk, indie, and hardcore, but also popular music regionally, nationally and internationally. In 2013, faced with the loss of several members of this scene over the course of twelve months, archivists in the University of Louisville Archives and Special Collections launched a project to document this important slice of Louisville's musical culture. The Louisville Underground Music Archive (LUMA) Project successfully applies documentation strategy, paired with a strong community engagement component, to address the gap in the historical record related to this culture.
Copyright And Cross-Cultural Borrowing: Indo-Western Musical Encounters, Arpan Banerjee
Copyright And Cross-Cultural Borrowing: Indo-Western Musical Encounters, Arpan Banerjee
IP Theory
This article traces the history of how Western rock musicians and hip-hop musicians, separated by many decades, have borrowed elements from Indian music. Conversely, the article also discusses how Indian film music composers have frequently, and rather blatantly, copied Western melodies. While cross-cultural borrowing raises complex socio-political questions, this article focuses on some practical legal questions that arise from such borrowing. The article discusses lawsuits filed by artists in India and the United States — from a much-publicized lawsuit against Dr. Dre by the Indian film music composer Bappi Lahiri, to a more recent lawsuit against another Indian film composer …
