Out Of Sync: Section 8 And Technological Advancement In Supreme Court Jurisprudence, Susan Magotiaux

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

This article offers a review of recent Supreme Court of Canada search and seizure cases to demonstrate the challenges facing courts, lawyers and law enforcement in applying existing Charter jurisprudence to new technological landscapes. R. v. Vu; R. v. TELUS Communications Co.; R. v. Spencer; and R. v. Fearon highlight the difficulties in drawing boundaries of privacy in computers, mobile devices, “intercepts” and online activity. Our changing social understanding of privacy impacts the sphere of activity and information encompassed by section 8 of the Charter, but easy public and remote access to digital data make drawing lines impractical. The article …

Rapamycin Rescues Vascular, Metabolic And Learning Deficits In Apolipoprotein E4 Transgenic Mice With Pre-Symptomatic Alzheimer’S Disease, Ai-Ling Lin, Jordan B. Jahrling, Wei Zhang, Nicholas Derosa, Vikas Bakshi, Peter Romero, Veronica Galvan, Arlan Richardson

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

Apolipoprotein E ɛ4 allele is a common susceptibility gene for late-onset Alzheimer's disease. Brain vascular and metabolic deficits can occur in cognitively normal apolipoprotein E ɛ4 carriers decades before the onset of Alzheimer's disease. The goal of this study was to determine whether early intervention using rapamycin could restore neurovascular and neurometabolic functions, and thus impede pathological progression of Alzheimer's disease-like symptoms in pre-symptomatic Apolipoprotein E ɛ4 transgenic mice. Using in vivo, multimodal neuroimaging, we found that apolipoprotein E ɛ4 mice treated with rapamycin had restored cerebral blood flow, blood–brain barrier integrity and glucose metabolism, compared …

A Step Forward Or Just A Sidestep? Year Five Of The Supreme Court Of Canada In The Digital Age, Nader R. Hasan

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

Over the past five years, the Supreme Court of Canada has released a series of decisions meant to bring section 8 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms into the Digital Age. These decisions acknowledged the unique privacy interests that people have in the information stored on their digital devices and the potential for modern technology to eviscerate privacy if the law of search and seizure does not keep pace with technological development. There is a danger, however, that recent victories for privacy in the courts will be illusory unless the courts develop additional manner of search limits on …

Trash may not be treasure, but it can be groceries. The United States Department of Agriculture and Environmental Protection Agency announced plans this year to halve food waste by 2030, but dumpster divers - also known as freegans - have been eating away at food waste for decades. Cutting down on organic waste can help feed the hungry, save money and minimize the environmental impact of rotting food in landfills. Many individuals, private groups and the New York City government are all working to cut down on organic waste.

Compliant Strategy For Shipowners Towards Sustainable Maritime Transport : A Decision Framework For Air Emission Reduction Measures, Aditya Srivastava Dec 2015

Compliant Strategy For Shipowners Towards Sustainable Maritime Transport : A Decision Framework For Air Emission Reduction Measures, Aditya Srivastava

World Maritime University Dissertations

IMO uses three pillar strategy for air emission reduction including, technical, operational and market-based measures (MBM). The dissertation briefly describes the maritime regulatory framework for reduction of emissions. An overview on air emissions caused by the shipping sector is analysed. A brief look is taken on the need and methodology for inventory management of air emissions. A comparison between the market-based measures, operational measures, carbon tax and abatement measures for averting air emissions of carbon equivalent is made. The author has examined the abatement measures available to shipowners. This section also investigates the response of shipowners to different possible measures. …

Antitrust Damages Actions In Ukraine: Current Situation And Perspectives, Anzhelika Gerasymenko, Nataliia Mazaraki

Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies

The article gives an overview of Ukrainian legislation and experiences concerning antitrust damages actions. The analysis has led to a number of conclusions: private claims are rare in Ukraine due to difficulties in obtaining evidence, high legal costs, and lacking confidence in the Ukrainian court system. The paper gives examples of Ukrainian private antitrust enforcement practice and provides a statistical analysis of the dynamics of ‘compensated’ damages caused by antitrust infringements in Ukraine. The value of ‘compensated’ damages is compared to the value of the economic effect of stopping antitrust infringements, as well as to the value of the overall …

Identification Of Arabidopsis Gpat9 (At5g60620) As An Essential Gene Involved In Triacylglycerol Biosynthesis, Jay Shockey, Anushobha Regmi, Kimberly Cotton, Neil Adhikari, John Bowse, Philip D. Bates Dec 2015

Identification Of Arabidopsis Gpat9 (At5g60620) As An Essential Gene Involved In Triacylglycerol Biosynthesis, Jay Shockey, Anushobha Regmi, Kimberly Cotton, Neil Adhikari, John Bowse, Philip D. Bates

Faculty Publications

The first step in the biosynthesis of nearly all plant membrane phospholipids and storage triacylglycerols is catalyzed by a glycerol-3-phosphate acyltransferase (GPAT). The requirement for an endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-localized GPAT for both of these critical metabolic pathways was recognized more than 60 years ago. However, identification of the gene(s) encoding this GPAT activity has remained elusive. Here, we present the results of a series of in vivo, in vitro, and in silico experiments in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) designed to assign this essential function to AtGPAT9. This gene has been highly conserved throughout evolution and is …

Modelling And Simulation Of Surface Plasmonic Resonance In Photonic Crystal Fiber / Rifat Ahmmed Aoni, Ahmmed Aoni Rifat

Student Works (2010-2019)

Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) refers to the coupling between the electromagnetic wave and the surface plasmonic wave (SPW) on the surface between a metal and a dielectric medium. Since last decade, the SPR behavior is widely applied in prism based SPR sensor, which is bulky and not suitable for remote monitoring applications. To overcome this limitation, photonic crystal fiber (PCF) based SPR sensor had attained great attention with the advantages of easily launching light through the fiber, small-size and design flexibility. To establish the SPR phenomena, metal deposition is necessary. Nowadays, in most of the PCF-SPR sensors, metal is selectively …
