Computational Approaches For Voltage Stability Monitoring And Control In Power Systems, Kangombe Joseph Makasa Jan 2015

Computational Approaches For Voltage Stability Monitoring And Control In Power Systems, Kangombe Joseph Makasa

Doctoral Dissertations

"The electric power grid is a complex, non-linear, non-stationary system comprising of thousands of components such as generators, transformers, transmission lines and advanced power electronics based control devices, and customer loads. The complexity of the grid has been further increased by the introduction of smart grid technologies. Smart grid technology adds to the traditional power grids advanced methods of communication, computation and control as well as increased use of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar farms and a higher penetration of plug-in electric vehicles among others. The smart grid has resulted in much more distributed generation, bi-directional powerflows …

Mechanical Characteristics Of Organically Modified Fly Ash-Kaolinite Mixtures, Xin Kang Jan 2015

Mechanical Characteristics Of Organically Modified Fly Ash-Kaolinite Mixtures, Xin Kang

Doctoral Dissertations

"Fly ash is a hazardous waste material to the environment. Beneficial reuse of fly ash, however, brings economic and environmental benefits, i.e., decreases the cost of disposal, reduces greenhouse gas emission, and improves mechanical properties of construction materials. Due to the lack of pozzolanic properties, the reuse rate of Class F fly ash in geotechnical engineering is relatively low (ACAA 2013). In order to promote the effectiveness and sustainability of high volume reuse of class F fly ash in geotechnical engineering, biopolymers (Chitosan, and Xanthan gum) and synthetic polymers (Polyethylene Oxide, PEO) were used instead of the traditional stabilizers to …

Software Puzzle: A Countermeasure To Resource-Inflated Denial-Of-Service Attacks, Yongdong Wu, Zhigang Zhao, Bao Feng, Robert H. Deng Jan 2015

Software Puzzle: A Countermeasure To Resource-Inflated Denial-Of-Service Attacks, Yongdong Wu, Zhigang Zhao, Bao Feng, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Denial-of-service (DoS) and distributed DoS (DDoS) are among the major threats to cyber-security, and client puzzle, which demands a client to perform computationally expensive operations before being granted services from a server, is a well-known countermeasure to them. However, an attacker can inflate its capability of DoS/DDoS attacks with fast puzzle-solving software and/or built-in graphics processing unit (GPU) hardware to significantly weaken the effectiveness of client puzzles. In this paper, we study how to prevent DoS/DDoS attackers from inflating their puzzle-solving capabilities. To this end, we introduce a new client puzzle referred to as software puzzle. Unlike the existing client …

An Adaptive Gradient Method For Online Auc Maximization, Yi Ding, Peilin Zhao, Steven C. H. Hoi, Yew-Soon Ong Jan 2015

An Adaptive Gradient Method For Online Auc Maximization, Yi Ding, Peilin Zhao, Steven C. H. Hoi, Yew-Soon Ong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Learning for maximizing AUC performance is an important research problem in machine learning. Unlike traditional batch learning methods for maximizing AUC which often suffer from poor scalability, recent years have witnessed some emerging studies that attempt to maximize AUC by single-pass online learning approaches. Despite their encouraging results reported, the existing online AUC maximization algorithms often adopt simple stochastic gradient descent approaches, which fail to exploit the geometry knowledge of the data observed in the online learning process, and thus could suffer from relatively slow convergence. To overcome the limitation of the existing studies, in this paper, we propose a …

The Knowledge Accumulation And Transfer In Open-Source Software (Oss) Development, Youngsoo Kim, Lingxiao Jiang Jan 2015

The Knowledge Accumulation And Transfer In Open-Source Software (Oss) Development, Youngsoo Kim, Lingxiao Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We examine the learning curves of individual software developers in Open-Source Software (OSS) Development. We collected the dataset of multi-year code change histories from the repositories for 20 open source software projects involving more than 200 developers. We build and estimate regression models to assess individual developers' learning progress (in reducing the likelihood they make a bug). Our estimation results show that developer's coding and indirect bug-fixing experiences do not decrease bug ratios while bug-fixing experience can lead to the decrease of bug ratio of learning progress. We also find that developer's coding and bug-fixing experiences in other projects do …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A system and a method are provided. The method includes deploying a plurality of antennas of an access point or a base station as a distributed antenna system. The method further includes configuring the distributed antenna system for multi-user wireless transmissions by applying medium access techniques and power-balanced pre-coding at the access point or the base station. The method also includes providing device localization for devices communicating with the distributed antenna system by applying time-difference-of-arrival techniques to antenna pairs from among the plurality of antennas at the access point or the base station.

A Systematic Study On Explicit-State Non-Zenoness Checking For Timed Automata, Ting Wang, Jun Sun, Xinyu Wang, Yang Liu, Yuanjie Si, Jin Song Dong, Xiaohu Yang, Xiaohong Li Jan 2015

A Systematic Study On Explicit-State Non-Zenoness Checking For Timed Automata, Ting Wang, Jun Sun, Xinyu Wang, Yang Liu, Yuanjie Si, Jin Song Dong, Xiaohu Yang, Xiaohong Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Zeno runs, where infinitely many actions occur within finite time, may arise in Timed Automata models. Zeno runs are not feasible in reality and must be pruned during system verification. Thus it is necessary to check whether a run is Zeno or not so as to avoid presenting Zeno runs as counterexamples during model checking. Existing approaches on non-Zenoness checking include either introducing an additional clock in the Timed Automata models or additional accepting states in the zone graphs. In addition, there are approaches proposed for alternative timed modeling languages, which could be generalized to Timed Automata. In this work, …

"Water is a very crucial natural resource for human. The increasing number of contaminants detected in water bodies has drawn considerable increasing attention over the last decade. There are numerous emerging environmental contaminants which may cause serious health issues. The recent occurrence studies of these contaminants show both industrial and household activity introduction of chemicals into water resources. These various sources result in a large variety of chemicals such as explosives, pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) and disinfection byproducts detected in water worldwide. Due to the relatively low contaminant concentrations, development of new and improved detection methods along with …

Behavior Of Hollow-Core Fiber Reinforced Polymer-Concrete-Steel Bridge Columns Under Extreme Loading, Omar I. Abdelkarim Jan 2015

Behavior Of Hollow-Core Fiber Reinforced Polymer-Concrete-Steel Bridge Columns Under Extreme Loading, Omar I. Abdelkarim

Doctoral Dissertations

"This study introduces an investigation of the behavior of innovative, resilient, and quickly-constructed hollow-core fiber reinforced polymer-concrete-steel (HC-FCS) bridge columns under extreme loading. The HC-FCS column consists of a concrete wall sandwiched between an outer fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) tube and an inner steel tube. The steel tube was embedded into a reinforced concrete footing with an embedded length of 1.6-1.8 times the diameter of the steel tube. The FRP tube only confined the concrete wall and truncated at the top of the footing level. The hollow steel tube was the only reinforcement for shear and flexure inside the HC-FCS …

Cormem Digital Reasoning Architecture Using Cmos Technology, Indira Priyadarshini Dugganapally

Doctoral Dissertations

”This dissertation describes the application of a multi-level, memory-based approach for building digital circuits. To reflect the alternative approach, the basic science is termed digital reasoning and the specific CorMem technology is based on recent patents. CMOS transistors are used in a non-traditional way for multi-level operations and memory manipulation. The combination of multi-level architectures and matrix algebra principles can create flexible, modular systems using standard fabrication methods and can avoid many of the limitations of other multi-valued logic approaches.

Quaternary, memory-based systems are developed to implement logic-gate-type functions, digital adder circuits, a complete arithmetic and logic unit (ALU), quaternary-to-binary …
