Theoretical Analysis And Sph Simulation For The Wave Energy Captured By A Bottom-Hinged Owsc, Yu-Chi Chang, Da-Wei Chen, Yi-Chih Chow, Shiaw-Yih Tzang, Chen-Chou Lin, Jiahn-Horng Chen
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This paper examines one type of wave energy converter, the Oscillating Wave Surge Converter (OWSC) with its bottom hinged on the sea bed. The simplest form of OWSC is a flapper connected with a power take-off (PTO). Theoretical analysis based on a 2D linear potential theory elucidates the mechanisms of the wave energy capture by a bottom-hinged OWSC in terms of impedances associated with the wave field, the flapper body, and the PTO. Criteria of impedance canceling and matching to maximize the energy capture factor can be deduced. Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) is established for simulating the same problem, and …

Improved Boundary Values Of Ocean Wave Fields Using A Data Assimilation Scheme, Yang-Ming Fan, Heinz Günther, Dong-Jiing Doong, Chia Chuen Kao
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The objective of this study was to assess the accuracy of numerical wave forecasts through data assimilation of boundary values. A sequential data assimilation scheme was adopted to utilise altimeter data. The performance of the system in terms of operational applications, specifically for typhoon waves, was investigated. Two typhoons that occurred in 2006 around Taiwan (Kaemi and Shanshan) were used as case studies. The proposed data assimilation increased the forecast accuracy of the boundary values in terms of the wave parameters, such as the wave heights and periods. The results showed that after the assimilation, the assimilation model was significantly …

Evaluation Of Tidal Stream Energy Around Radial Sand Ridge System In The Southern Yellow Sea, Jinhai Zheng, Jisheng Zhang, Jun Wang, Aifeng Tao
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Tidal stream energy as a new type of marine renewable energy attracts more and more attention of coastal engineers due to its advantages of great power density, long-term predictability and low environment impact. The radial sand ridge (RSR) system is located in the southern Yellow Sea off the Jiangsu coast, China, and it is characterized by a radial current field. The exploitation of tidal stream energy in the RSR system means great significance to the local industry and ecosystem of this region. In this study, a two-dimensional depthaveraged hydrodynamic model was established to predict one-year tidal hydrodynamics in the RSR …

The Latest Progress In Wave Energy Conversions In China And The Analysis Of A Heaving Buoy Considering Pto Damping, Hong-Da Shi, Fei-Fei Cao, Na Qu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Wave energy conversions are being widely researched and developed in China; two key factors of significance with these devices are safety and efficiency. This paper provides information on the latest techniques of wave energy devices investigated in China, introduces their working principles, and describes performance briefly. To design a wave device, the conversion efficiency needs to be estimated. This paper describes a method for doing such analysis on a heaving buoy considering the power take-off, which is an important step for achieving wave-to-wire simulation.

Current-Induced Seabed Scour Around A Pile-Supported Horizontal-Axis Tidal Stream Turbine, Jisheng Zhang, Peng Gao, Jinhai Zheng, Xiuguang Wu, Yuxuan Peng, Tiantian Zhang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Tidal stream energy has attracted more and more attentions of researchers and engineers of coastal studies in recent years, as it is renewable, predictable and environmentally friendly. Although many efforts have been made for the application of tidal stream energy, the scouring process in the vicinity of a pile-supported tidal stream turbine remains unclear. This study develops a mathematical model, consisting of hydrodynamic module, General Moving Object (GMO) module and sediment scour module, to numerically investigate the fluidstructure interaction and its induced sediment scour process around such a combined structure. Only a steady current is considered in the model, and …
(Same) Sex, Lies, And Democracy: Tradition, Religion, And Substantive Due Process (With An Emphasis On Obergefell V. Hodges), Stephen M. Feldman
(Same) Sex, Lies, And Democracy: Tradition, Religion, And Substantive Due Process (With An Emphasis On Obergefell V. Hodges), Stephen M. Feldman
William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal
Substantive due process issues implicitly concern voice. Whose voice will be heard? Although such issues often remain submerged, the Justices occasionally translate them into disputes over democratic participation and power. The Supreme Court’s most important substantive due process decision in years, Obergefell v. Hodges, entailed such a battle over democracy. The multiple dissenting opinions insisted that the decision demeaned the opponents of same-sex marriage, many of whom were inspired by traditional values and religious convictions. The majority explicitly disagreed, reasoning that the case resolved the rights of same-sex couples to marry and did not diminish the opponents’ voices. The dissenters …
Human Rights States And Societies: A Reflection From Kenya, Willy Mutunga
Human Rights States And Societies: A Reflection From Kenya, Willy Mutunga
The Transnational Human Rights Review
A human rights state is conceptualized as a liberal democratic state with a social democratic content, the modern day version of the capitalist welfare state. With the “collapses” of communism and neoliberalism, the paradigms of human rights and social justice have taken a center state. The birth of transformative constitutions and transformative constitutionalism linked to modern and comprehensive Bills of Rights have enriched the intellectual, ideological, and political debates of human rights and social justice paradigms. On one hand they have the ingredients of mitigating neo-liberalism while on the other hand they reflect some of the features of the paradigms …

Yet Another 100yr Storm Surge Event: The Role Of Individual Storm Surges On Design Water Levels, Jürgen Jensen, Arne Arns, Thomas Wahl
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
On December 6th 2013 the German coastline was hit by the extra tropical cyclone “Xaver”, which caused the highest water levels on record in some places. In the media, the resulting storm surge was quickly referred to as a “once in one hundred years” event or a “century storm surge”. Based on 12 tide gauges in the German Bight, we estimate return periods of the observed water levels during Xaver and find that they were much lower than 100 years. However, in some places Xaver caused increases in the 200-year return water level estimates, which are often used for the …

Isn’T Citizen Science A Hoot? A Case-Study Exploring The Effectiveness Of Citizen Science As An Instrument To Teach The Nature Of Science Through A Local Nocturnal Owl-Monitoring Project, Tess Marie Kreofsky
Dissertations and Theses
Citizen science projects present a distinctive opportunity for professional and volunteer scientists to coordinate their efforts to gather unique sets of data that can benefit the scientific and local communities. These projects are assumed to be an effective educational tool to teach nature of science (NOS) to participants (Brossard, Lewenstein, Bonney, 2005). This case study evaluates the effectiveness of participation in a citizen science project as a way to learn about NOS. Through enhancement of the Tryon Creek Owl Monitoring Project the researcher reviewed the characteristics of a citizen science project that were thought to be necessary to impact the …

Reinforcing The Identity Of The African Children's Rights Committee: A Case For Limiting The Lust For Judicial Powers In Quasi -Judicial Human Rights Mechanisms, Solomon T. Ebobrah
The Transnational Human Rights Review
Established as a quasi-judicial treaty supervisory body rather than an international court, the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child struggles for relevance in the African human rights system where most non-state stakeholders arguably prefer organs with clear judicial powers. Thus, similar to the experiences of its older counterparts, the Committee appears to be under subtle pressure to substitute or at least reinforce its quasi-judicial character with more judicial powers and action. In essence, the Committee suffers from the uncertainty that prevails in international law regarding the definition of the term quasi-judicial; and the unclear …

The Relationship Between Human Rights And Judicial Globalization, Klodian Rado
The Transnational Human Rights Review
There are numerous academic writings about the actors, factors, and mechanisms that shape and drive human rights at national, transnational, and international levels. However, the relationship between human rights and the process of judicial globalization remains underexplored in recent scholarship, and the purpose of this study is to explore such a relationship and its effects. First, we provide a brief theoretical background of both human rights and judicial globalization concepts, and then, we focus on the relationship between them. By investigating existing empirical data, we uncover how judicial globalization is effecting and shaping human rights through various mechanisms and their …

Academic Duty And Academic Freedom, Amy Gadja
Indiana Law Journal
On December 31, 1915, the newly formed American Association of University Professors (AAUP) and its Committee on Academic Freedom and Academic Tenure accepted a set of guidelines designed to shape the organization and its work to protect academics against the termination power of their employer-universities. The “General Declaration of Principles,” drafted by approximately a dozen educators who were called from universities across the country, begins with a decided focus on the rights of individuals within the academy: “The term ‘academic freedom’ has traditionally had two applications,” the language reads at the start, “to the freedom of the teacher and to …

Risk Allocation Under The Principal ‘Traditional’ Irish Forms Of Building Contract, Tony Cunningham
Other Resources
Construction projects are risky ventures. Risks are inevitable and cannot be entirely eliminated but they can be transferred through appropriate wording in the clauses of a contract. Construction contracts allocate particular risks between the parties in order to identify who bears the cost if a particular risk comes to pass.
This study examines how contractual risks are allocated to the contracting parties under the Royal Institute of Architects in Ireland Form, 2012 version, where quantities form part of the contract, commonly known as ‘the Yellow Form’, and the Public Works Contract PW CF1 Form v 1.10, 2014 where the design …

Ergonomic Analysis Of Mobile Cart–Assisted Stocking Activities Using Electromyography, Sohyung Cho
SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
Workers in grocery stores are exposed to numerous musculoskeletal risks that can be reduced using assistive devices while performing stocking tasks. A regional grocery store has recently deployed a mobile cart without comprehension of its ergonomic impact on workers, which this article investigates using normalized electromyography data (%MVC). This article studies not only ergonomic impact based on %MVC values but also work performance represented by a muscle force metric (MFM). The results from this study showed highest muscle groups in %MVC and MFM were the erector spinae and triceps. Interestingly, muscle activations on erector spinae were reduced when mobile cart …

Characteristics Of Boundary Layer Flow Induced By Solitary Wave Propagating Over Horizontal Bottom, Chang Lin, Shi-Min Yu, Po-Hung Yeh, Min-Hsuan Yu, Ching-Piao Tsai, Shih-Chun Hsieh, Ming-Jer Kao, Guang-Wei Tzeng, Rajkumar Raikar
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Experimental results on the flow characteristics of bottom boundary layer induced by a solitary wave propagating over a horizontal bottom are presented. Particle-trajectory flow visualization technique and high-speed particle image velocimetry (HSPIV) were used to elucidate detailed velocity fields underneath solitary waves with the ratios of wave height to water depth from 0.130 to 0.386. The results show that the velocity profiles can be classified into two classes with respect to the passage of the solitary wave-crest at the measuring section: the pre-passing and post-passing phases. For the pre-passing phase, the velocity distributions can be deduced to a unique similarity …

Momentum Of Particles From Time-Of-Flight Measurements, Joseph Best
Momentum Of Particles From Time-Of-Flight Measurements, Joseph Best
Senior Theses
In order to find the momentum of particles from time of flight measurements, I used a program called Geant4 to simulate experiments. I made a simple two detector setup, and I recreated a real world experiment. I spent a lot of time learning to code in C++ so I could use Geant4 correctly. I simulated these experiments shooting electrons, muons, and pions through the geometry and measured the time at two points in their flight. Subtracting the second time from the first gave me the time of flight distribution for each particle. I used ROOT to draw histograms of the …

The Force Of Water: Columbia After The Flood, Rebecca Johnson
Senior Theses
Nearly two months have passed, and South Carolina is still recovering from the unprecedented inundation of rain that pelted down in early October. Record amounts of precipitation pounded the state over just a few days, resulting in the flooding and erosion of land, the deterioration of public infrastructure and the loss of human life and capital.
The worst of it was in the capital city. Columbia recorded the highest water levels and the highest number of fatalities of all the affected areas. The city’s utilities could not handle the torrent of water: dams were destroyed, canals were compromised, roads were …

Energy Dissipation In The Course Of The Fatigue Degradation: Mathematical Derivation And Experimental Quantification, Ali Kahirdeh, M. M. Khonsari
Faculty Publications
This paper is concerned with a continuum formulation for irreversible energy dissipation that accounts for generated acoustic emissions during the loading of the materials. Within a thermodynamically consistent framework, the coupling between the mechanical, thermal and acoustic fields is formulated. The evolution of the dissipative energy is experimentally measured as the material is degraded. A statistically similar behavior is observed in different forms of the dissipated energy as the material degrades.

Functional Consequences Of Cantu Syndrome Associated Mutations In The Atp Sensitive Potassium Channel, Paige Cooper
Functional Consequences Of Cantu Syndrome Associated Mutations In The Atp Sensitive Potassium Channel, Paige Cooper
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channels are composed of inward-rectifying potassium channel pore-forming subunits (Kir6.1 and Kir6.2, encoded by KCNJ8 and KCNJ11, respectively) and regulatory sulfonylurea receptor subunits (SUR1 and SUR2, encoded by ABCC8 and ABCC9, respectively). These channels couple metabolism to excitability in multiple tissues. Mutations in ABCC9 have been linked to Cantú syndrome (CS), a multi-organ disease characterized by congenital hypertrichosis, distinct facial features, osteochondrodysplasia, and cardiac defects. Additionally, two ABCC9 mutation-negative patients, exhibiting clinical hallmarks of CS, have been identified as having KCNJ8 mutations. This body of work is focused on determining the functional consequences and molecular mechanisms of …
Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Envelope Protein Interaction With Host Cell Coreceptor C-X-C Chemokine Receptor Type 4, Jie Zhang
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 (HIV-1) envelope protein is the sole determinant for viral entry and tropism. The ability of HIV-1 to infect susceptible host cells depends on the ability of its envelope protein to engage host cell receptor CD4 and coreceptor C-C Chemokine Receptor Type 5 (CCR5) and/or C-X-C Chemokine Receptor Type 4 (CXCR4). Most naturally occurring infections start with a single CCR5-tropic virion. In approximately 50% of HIV-1 Clade B infected patients, the viral population spontaneous develops the ability to utilize CXCR4 at a late disease stage, and this coreceptor shift corresponds to a poor prognosis for the …
