Prediction Of Aircraft Fuselage Vibration, Rohan Thomas Jan 2015

Prediction Of Aircraft Fuselage Vibration, Rohan Thomas

Theses and Dissertations

Modern unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) are made of lightweight structures, owing to the demand for longer ranges and heavier payloads. These lightweight aircraft are more susceptible to vibrations caused by atmospheric turbulence transmitted to the fuselage from the wings. These vibrations, which can cause damage to the payload or on board avionics present a serious problem, since air turbulence is expected to increase over the next few decades, due to climate change.

The objective of this thesis is to predict the vibration of an aircraft fuselage by establishing a relationship between wing and fuselage vibration. A combination of ANSYS® and …

Preventing Or Mitigating The Irreversible Ro Membrane Fouling Caused By Dissolved Organic Matter And Colloidal Materials During Surface Water Treatment, Raphael Ade Afonja Jan 2015

Preventing Or Mitigating The Irreversible Ro Membrane Fouling Caused By Dissolved Organic Matter And Colloidal Materials During Surface Water Treatment, Raphael Ade Afonja

Theses and Dissertations

Reverse osmosis (RO) is increasingly being used for water treatment because of its small ecological footprint and improved membrane technology. However, a major challenge to the application of this technology in water treatment is the irreversible fouling observed in RO membranes. Fouling, mainly caused by dissolved organic matter (DOM) and colloidal materials (CM) in water, can increase the energy and maintenance costs and decrease the permeation flux and membrane life. Different pretreatments, such as coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, and membrane-filtration, need to be applied upstream of the RO system to remove potential RO foulants. Membrane remediation by chemical cleaning also needs …

Local Buckling Restraining Behavior Of Concrete-Filled Steel Tubular Columns Under Seismic Loads, Fokruddin Ahmad Jan 2015

Local Buckling Restraining Behavior Of Concrete-Filled Steel Tubular Columns Under Seismic Loads, Fokruddin Ahmad

Theses and Dissertations

Extensive investigations have verified that frame systems consist of concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns have more benefits than ordinary reinforced concrete and steel systems. The CFST column increases earthquake resistant capabilities due to the concrete filling inside the steel tubes and are ideal for buildings subjected to large compressive stress. The use of CFST columns is drawing attention due to their strength and quake-proof advantages. Local buckling of the steel tube is delayed by the restraint of the concrete, and the strength of concrete is increased by the confining effect of the steel tube.

This thesis deals with the local …

Inquiry-Based Teaching In The College Classroom: The Nontraditional Student, Daniel A. Kiernan Jan 2015

Inquiry-Based Teaching In The College Classroom: The Nontraditional Student, Daniel A. Kiernan

Theses and Dissertations

Decline in the economic realm often bolsters an increase of nontraditional student enrollments in colleges and universities (Windolf, 1992). Many of these students, who do not desire to major in some scientific area, find themselves struggling in required science courses. Over the last decade, science departments of higher education have been adjusting their curriculum to include inquiry in the college science classroom. Although inquiry-based teaching has been shown to be very academically positive in science classrooms from K-12, “at the college level the data are mixed as to whether increasing inquiry instruction can significantly change students’ learning or attitudes toward …

Bacterial Communication And Its Role As A Target For Nanoparticle-Based Antimicrobial Therapy, Kristen Publicover Miller Jan 2015

Bacterial Communication And Its Role As A Target For Nanoparticle-Based Antimicrobial Therapy, Kristen Publicover Miller

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this dissertation is to establish the environmental and public health importance of alternative forms of antimicrobial therapy, specifically those that utilize nanotechnology to combat quorum sensing-controlled bacterial infections. Quorum sensing (i.e. chemical communication) is an inherent characteristic that is essential to bacterial pathogenesis and biofilm formation (where most infections occur). A thorough review of the literature has been conducted to establish an understanding of the state of nanotechnology research as it relates to combatting bacterial infections. This synthesis, provided in Chapter 1, demonstrates how the chemical and structural designs of nanoparticles can be manipulated to specifically target …

An Investigation Of A Culturally Responsive Approach To Science Education In A Summer Program For Marginalized Youth, Brittany A. Garvin Jan 2015

An Investigation Of A Culturally Responsive Approach To Science Education In A Summer Program For Marginalized Youth, Brittany A. Garvin

Theses and Dissertations

The demographics of today’s schools are becoming more and more ethnically and linguistically diverse, as culturally diverse students comprise approximately one third of school populations (Ladson-Billings, 2005). However, the educational experiences of students of Color demonstrate a history of marginalization and inequity (Williamson et al., 2007) as far too many students of Color have maintained poor educational achievement outcomes. The effects of such disproportionally high levels of low academic achievement are extensive and can be witnessed across subject content areas, particularly in math, science, and literacy. To improve the academic performance of students who are culturally, racially, ethnically, and linguistically …

Investigating Flipped Learning: Post-Secondary Student Self-Regulated Learning, Perceptions, And Achievement, Sarah Rae Sletten Jan 2015

Investigating Flipped Learning: Post-Secondary Student Self-Regulated Learning, Perceptions, And Achievement, Sarah Rae Sletten

Theses and Dissertations

The flipped classroom is a current educational model that is gaining popularity at the post-secondary level. In a flipped classroom, content (i.e., lectures), which is normally delivered in-class, is assigned as homework in the form of video lectures, and assignments that were traditionally assigned as homework, are done as learning activities in class. It was hypothesized that the effectiveness of the flipped model hinges on a student’s desire and ability to adopt a self-directed learning style. The purpose of this study was two-fold; it aimed examining the relationship between two variables—students’ perceptions of the flipped model and their SRL behaviors—and …

Group Social Skills Interventions For Children With Aspergers: The Effects Of Parent-Guided Social Skills Software, Ryan M. Kelly Jan 2015

Group Social Skills Interventions For Children With Aspergers: The Effects Of Parent-Guided Social Skills Software, Ryan M. Kelly

Theses and Dissertations

Asperger’s syndrome (AS) has recently become controversial as a unique pervasive developmental disorder. Although it is apparently different than low-functioning autism, it has been deemed too similar to high-functioning autism (HFA) to be considered a distinct diagnosis in the DSM-5 classification system. However, despite the removal of AS from the DSM-5, research shows that both AS and HFA are significantly different than autism with cognitive impairment (intelligence quotient <= 70), and therefore have different treatment needs. These needs primarily include specialized social skills training. Youth with AS/HFA who obtain sufficient social skills often report greater levels of quality of life and lower levels of anxiety and depression. Their parents also report less parental stress. Although a growing number of evidence-based social skill interventions exist, few use an experimental design and incorporate special interest areas (i.e., the pervasive interests of children with AS), generalization techniques (e.g., different settings, parent inclusion) or computer mediation, which research suggests is needed. Using an experimental design, this study investigated the incremental benefits of parent-guided social skills software (i.e., Social Express) in improving social, emotional and behavioral functioning in the child, as well as reduce parental-stress in the parent. Thirty youths with AS/HFA enrolled in a 9-week social skills group at a clinic participated in this study, as well as their parents. Half were randomly assigned to receive Social Express. Results indicated that the treatment group showed significant improvements in social motivation compared to the control group. No significant main effects were found in regards to other social skills, internalizing problems, adaptive skills, parental stress, or life satisfaction; however, it should be noted that this study is limited by a small sample size. Other significant effects may exist, and should be investigated in the future with a larger sample size.

Experimental Study Of Longitudinal Sorting Of Particles Differing In Size And Density, Nabila Mahjabeen Jan 2015

Experimental Study Of Longitudinal Sorting Of Particles Differing In Size And Density, Nabila Mahjabeen

Theses and Dissertations

Transport, deposition and erosion of sediment particles differing in size, shape and density may result in particle segregation, which in geosciences applications is generally referred to as sediment sorting. A thorough understanding of sediment sorting processes is important to describe and model a wide variety of natural processes such as the decrease in particle size and/or density in a fluvial system (downstream fining and/or lightening), the formation of economic placers, concentration of heavy minerals, chemical and metal pollutants etc. Sorting of sediment grains associated with sediment transport in the streamwise direction results in the development of longitudinal sorting patterns. Vertical …

En Busca De La Autoría Dentro Del “Mal” En Estrella Distante De Roberto Bolaño, Andres Felipe Arroyave

Theses and Dissertations

The focus of this thesis is to analyze and explain the relationship between the concepts of authorship and evil, and how they connect with one another in Roberto Bolaño’s Estrella distante. Through the research I have collected, I propose a dialogue linking the aforementioned themes with each other utilizing the theoretical framework of Adriana Cavarero and Roland Barthes among others. With Roland Barthes, I intend to examine the role of what he designates as “Author-Scriptor” and how this particular function manifests itself within the paratext of Estrella distante via the role of the reader. The paratext of this particular novel …

Using Household Travel Surveys To Adjust Ite Trip Generation Rates, Kristina Marie Currans, Kelly J. Clifton

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) Trip Generation Handbook has become the predominant method for estimating vehicle trips generated by development. The handbook is often criticized for its inability to account for multimodal behavior in urban contexts, often overestimating vehicle traffic. The purpose of this research is to develop and test a ready-to-use method for adjusting the ITE handbook vehicle trip generation estimates for urban context. This method was created using household travel surveys from Oregon, Washington, and Maryland, as well as nationally available built environment data. Three adjustments were estimated for eight general land-use categories, including a “pooled” category …

Empirical Evaluation Of Transit Signal Priority Through Fusion Of Heterogeneous Transit And Traffic Signal Data And Novel Performance Measures, Wei Feng, Miguel A. Figliozzi, Robert Bertini Jan 2015

Empirical Evaluation Of Transit Signal Priority Through Fusion Of Heterogeneous Transit And Traffic Signal Data And Novel Performance Measures, Wei Feng, Miguel A. Figliozzi, Robert Bertini

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Transit signal priority (TSP) can reduce transit delay at signalized intersections by making phasing adjustments. TSP is a relatively inexpensive and easy to implement tool to make transit service faster and more reliable. TSP also sends a signal that a city or region encourages the growth of transit mode split. With the aim of assessing the performance of an existing TSP system, this study had access to a unique set of high-resolution bus and traffic signal data. Novel algorithms and performance measures to measure TSP performance are proposed. Results indicate that a timely and effective TSP system requires a high …

A Level-Of-Service Model For Protected Bike Lanes, Nick Foster, Christopher Monsere, Jennifer Dill, Kelly Clifton Jan 2015

A Level-Of-Service Model For Protected Bike Lanes, Nick Foster, Christopher Monsere, Jennifer Dill, Kelly Clifton

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Several methods exist for quantifying the quality of service provided by a roadway from a bicyclist’s perspective; however, many of these models do not consider physically protected bike lanes and, of those that do, none is based on empirical data from the US. This is problematic as engineers, planners, and elected officials are increasingly looking to objective performance measures to help guide transportation project design and funding prioritization decisions. This paper addresses this gap by presenting a cumulative logistic model to predict user comfort on protected bike lanes developed from data collected during in-person video surveys. The surveys were conducted …

Dynamic Ventilation And Power Output Of Urban Bicyclists, Alexander Y. Bigazzi, Miguel A. Figliozzi Jan 2015

Dynamic Ventilation And Power Output Of Urban Bicyclists, Alexander Y. Bigazzi, Miguel A. Figliozzi

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Bicyclist intake of air pollutants is linked to physical exertion levels, ventilation rates, and exposure concentrations. Whereas exposure concentrations have been widely studied in transportation environments, there is relatively scant research linking on-road ventilation with travel conditions and exertion levels. This paper investigates relationships among power output, heart rate, and ventilation rate for urban bicyclists. Heart rate and ventilation rate were measured on-road and combined with power output estimates from a bicycle power model. Dynamic ventilation rates increased by 0.4-0.8% per watt of power output, with a mean lag of 0.8 minutes. The use of physiology (ventilation) monitoring straps and …

Empirical Analysis Of Bus Bunching Characteristics Based On Bus Avl/Apc Data, Wei Feng, Miguel A. Figliozzi Jan 2015

Empirical Analysis Of Bus Bunching Characteristics Based On Bus Avl/Apc Data, Wei Feng, Miguel A. Figliozzi

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Bus bunching takes place when headways between buses are irregular. Bus bunching is associated with longer waiting times for riders, overcrowding in some buses, and an overall decrease on the level of service and capacity. Understanding the temporal and spatial characteristics and the causes and effects of bus bunching incidents from archived bus data can greatly aid transit agencies to develop efficient mitigation strategies. This paper presents methods to identify and visualize specific time periods and segments where bus bunching incidents occur based on automatic vehicle location (AVL) and automatic passenger count (APC) data. The paper also proposes methods that …

Does The Bicycle Detector Symbol Change Cyclist Queuing Position At Signalized Intersections?, Stefan W. Bussey, Christopher M. Monsere, Peter Koonce

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Manual of Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) includes a bicycle detector pavement marking (Section 9C-05) and accompanying explanatory sign (R10-22) which may encourage cyclists to position themselves over detection at traffic signals. This paper presents the results of an observational and survey- based study evaluating the bicycle detector marking. Three minor actuated approaches at signalized intersections with significant bicycle volumes and without bicycle detector markings were selected for treatment. Three configurations were compared: 1) bicycle detector marking only 2) bicycle detector marking with the R10-22 explanatory sign, and 3) an alternative bicycle detector installed over a contrasting green rectangle. Analysis …

Tides And The Swot Mission: Transition From Science Definition Team To Science Team, Brian K. Arbic, Florent Lyard, Aurelien Ponte, Richard D. Ray, James G. Richman, Jay F. Shriver, Edward Zaron, Zhongxiang Zhao Jan 2015

Tides And The Swot Mission: Transition From Science Definition Team To Science Team, Brian K. Arbic, Florent Lyard, Aurelien Ponte, Richard D. Ray, James G. Richman, Jay F. Shriver, Edward Zaron, Zhongxiang Zhao

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

As the SWOT wide-swath satellite altimeter mission transitions from the Science Definition Team to the Science Team, it is an opportune time to review the progress that has been made with respect to tides, and the work remaining to be done. As with previous altimeter missions, tides present both an opportunity and a challenge for the SWOT mission. The TOPEX/Jason class of altimeters have allowed high-accuracy mapping of open-ocean barotropic tides over their coverage latitudes (66°S to 66°N), but the inter-track spacing of these missions (~150 km) has limited their ability to map smaller-scale features such as shelf tides, coastal …

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Robust bicycle and pedestrian data on a national scale would help promote effective planning and engineering of walking and bicycling facilities, build the evidence-based case for funding such projects, and dispel notions that walking and cycling are not occurring. To organize and promote the collection of nonmotorized traffic data, a team of transportation professionals and computer scientists is creating a national bicycle and pedestrian count archive. This archive will enable data sharing by centralizing continuous and short-duration traffic counts in a publicly available online archive. Although other archives exist, this will be the first archive that will be national in …

The Role Of Lysophosphatidylcholine Acyltransferase (Lpcat) 3 In Macrophage Inflammatory Responses, Confidence Obianuju Okorie

School of Biomedical Sciences Theses

Sepsis is the systemic response to infection and is characterised by the presence of Severe Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS) in addition to a documented or presumed infection. It is an important reason for admission into the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), the leading cause of death in non-coronary ICU’s and one of the most common causes of death among hospitalized patients. It affects 18 million people worldwide each year with over 7.3 million fatalities. Molecules such as endotoxin, the Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) present in the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, are key factors in the pathogenesis of sepsis. The activation of macrophages …

Following New Lights: Critical Legal Research Strategies As A Spark For Law Reform In Appalachia, Nicholas F. Stump Jan 2015

Following New Lights: Critical Legal Research Strategies As A Spark For Law Reform In Appalachia, Nicholas F. Stump

American University Journal of Gender, Social Policy & the Law

The nascent “critical legal research” movement applies the constellation of critical theory to the American legal research regime. Work in this discourse has unpacked the means through which commercial print and online legal resources (e.g., Westlaw and Lexis) insidiously channel the efforts of legal researchers, essentially predetermining research outcomes. Although legal research is commonly conceived as a normatively neutral paradigm, such commercial homogenizing agents (paired with traditional methods of legal analysis) in fact reflect and perpetuate society’s dominant interests. As grounded in the existing literature, this Article outlines novel strategies that may together constitute one potential version of a critically …

Charged-To-Neutral Correlation At Forward Rapidity In Au + Au Collisions At √S(Nn)=200 Gev, L. Adamczyk, J. K. Adkins, G. Agakishiev, A. A. Aggarwal, Z. Ahammed, I. Alekseev, S. Bültmann

Physics Faculty Publications

Event-by-event fluctuations of the multiplicities of inclusive charged particles and photons at forward rapidity in Au + Au collisions at √s(NN) = 200 GeV have been studied. The dominant contribution to such fluctuations is expected to come from correlated production of charged and neutral pions. We search for evidence of dynamical fluctuations of different physical origins. Observables constructed out of moments of multiplicities are used as measures of fluctuations. Mixed events and model calculations are used as base lines. Results are compared to the dynamical net-charge fluctuations measured in the same acceptance. A nonzero statistically significant signal of dynamical fluctuations …

The dynamics of quantized magnetic vortices and their pinning by materials defects determine electromagnetic properties of superconductors, particularly their ability to carry non-dissipative currents. Despite recent advances in the understanding of the complex physics of vortex matter, the behavior of vortices driven by current through a multi-scale potential of the actual materials defects is still not well understood, mostly due to the scarcity of appropriate experimental tools capable of tracing vortex trajectories on nanometer scales. Using a novel scanning superconducting quantum interference microscope we report here an investigation of controlled dynamics of vortices in lead films with sub-Angstrom spatial resolution …

Nitrogen Doping Study In Ingot Niobium Cavities, Pashupati Dhakal, Gianluigi Ciovati, Peter Kneisel, Ganapati Rao Myneni, Junki Makita

Physics Faculty Publications

Thermal diffusion of nitrogen in superconducting radio frequency cavities at temperatures around 800C has resulted in the increase in quality factor with a low-field Q-rise. However, the maximum accelerating gradients of these doped cavities often reduces below the values achieved by standard treatments. In this contribution, we present the results of the nitrogen diffusion into ingot niobium cavities subjected to successive material removal from the inner cavity surface by electropolishing in an effort to explore the underlying cause for the gradient degradation.
