There is ample research on the public’s perception of individuals who stutter, but little research was found about the public’s knowledge about the definition and etiology of stuttering. The present study attempted to address whether college students in a specific area of study possessed either quantitative or qualitative differences in their knowledge about the definition and etiology of stuttering. Subjects included 80 males and 100 females across 9 different academic colleges to assess their knowledge of stuttering. Five open response questions were presented to each participant. The purpose of this qualitative research study was to examine African American community college students’ availability to technological resources and how that availability affects their success. In this study, technological resources include access to the internet, software, hardware, technology training, technology support, and community resources. This study included six community college professors and six African American community college students enrolled in a Midwest community college. Little is known about the officials who conduct administrative hearings for aggrieved welfare clients. Hearing officers are charged with ensuring due process for welfare clients, called appellants in the hearing process, who believe that mistakes have been made in their cases and who wish to challenge those decisions. Administrative hearings are one of the few vehicles that afford clients the opportunity to contest welfare policies and procedures. This study explored welfare hearing officers and their perceptions of their roles in conducting hearings.

This thesis is a legal analysis of the history of privacy law in the context of the Fourth Amendment. This historical analysis will focus on landmark United States Supreme Court cases involving searches and seizures from the 1886 Boyd v. United States case to the 2014 Riley v California case. Primary care providers have terminated patient-provider relationships when they deem them no longer therapeutic. Healthcare providers are increasingly considering this an acceptable practice. However, the criteria for this decision remain unclear. As providers discharge challenging or difficult patients from their practices, questions to support this decision arise. Discharged patients face displacement and healthcare is disrupted. This project will (a) describe problematic patient-provider relationships and its effects, (b) identify possible alternatives to the firing of patients, (c) list appropriate reasons for termination, and (d) present recommended procedures to avoid allegations of medical abandonment. This research study provided a greater understanding of the affects that such an implementation had on certified staff regardless of grade level, experience, subject, or gender.

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the most common neurodegenerative movement disorder and second most common neurodegenerative disorder. PD is characterized by the selective loss of dopaminergic neurons and dopamine neurotransmitter within the substantia nigra and termini in the striatum. Progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons occurs over many years in PD, and by the time movement disorder symptoms manifest, up to 50-70% of dopaminergic neurons have been lost. Several aspects of PD pathology have been described in detail, but a better understanding of PD progression is needed to develop more efficient treatments.

A hallmark of cardiac development is the formation of myocardial trabeculations exclusively from the luminal surface of the primitive heart tube. Although a number of genetic defects in the endocardium (Grego-Bessa et al., 2007; Liu et al., 2010) and cardiac jelly (Camenisch et al., 2000) disrupt myocardial trabeculation, the role of cell polarity machinery in driving this process remains unclear. Herein, we demonstrate that atypical protein kinase C iota (Prkci) and its interacting partners of Par polarity complex are localized to the luminal side of luminal myocardial cells. Our lab is particularly interested in delineating the cellular functions as well as the molecular mechanisms that regulate the C-terminal Eps15 Homology Domain (EHD) protein family of adenosine-5’-triphosphatases in mammalian cells. EHD1-4 are ubiquitously expressed in mammalian tissues and serve partially overlapping but also distinct functions in regulating membrane shaping and fission along the endocytic pathway. This dissertation examines the role of CXCR2, a seven transmembrane G- protein coupled receptor, in mediating autocrine as well as paracrine mechanisms during pancreatic cancer progression. Data presented in the initial section demonstrates the aberrant expression of the CXCR2 biological axis in human pancreatic cancer tissue specimens. A study performed within the first section of this dissertation investigates the contribution of CXCR2 signaling in pancreatic cancer initiation. These studies have identified a novel role of CXCR2 in mediating KRAS^(G12D) -induced autocrine growth transformation of pancreatic cancer cells. The high degree of heterogeneity observed in breast cancers makes it very difficult to classify cancer patients into distinct clinical subgroups and consequently limits the ability to devise effective therapeutic strategies. In this study, we explore the use of gene mutation profiles to classify, characterize and predict the subgroups of breast cancers. We analyzed the whole exome sequencing data from 358 ethnically similar breast cancer patients in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) project. Follicular lymphoma (FL) is the second most common lymphoma in the United States. Although it is generally an indolent lymphoma, FL is not curable, and, in about 30% of patients, the FL undergoes transformation into an aggressive lymphoma (tFL) with marked worsening of prognosis. To identify mutations preferentially present in tFL, we performed whole exome sequencing (WES) on paired FL and tFL arising in the same patients and developed a mutational analysis pipeline.
