Electronic Structure Calculations Of Monolayer–Protected Gold Nanoclusters To Aid Spectroscopic Analysis, Neranjan V. Perera Dec 2015

Electronic Structure Calculations Of Monolayer–Protected Gold Nanoclusters To Aid Spectroscopic Analysis, Neranjan V. Perera

Doctoral Dissertations

The underlying goal of this thesis dissertation is to simulate small monolayer protected clusters (MPCs) via quantum mechanics and molecular mechanics calculations to derive electronic, structural, and dynamical properties. First we specifically focus on monolayers consisting of thiolated oligopeptides and alkanethiols. We construct MPCs with a layer of oligopeptides consisting of α-aminoisobutyric acid units. We use Monte Carlo simulations to determine peptide arrangements and folding. We then perform NMR chemical shifts calculations and compare to experimental measurements to validate the predicted structure.

The native -1 oxidation state can be oxidized into 0 and to +1 charge states. The neutral charge …

Standardised Testing In Compulsory Schooling In England And Denmark: A Comparative Study And Analysis, K Andreasen, P Kelly, K Kousholt, E Mcness, C Ydesen

Plymouth Institute of Education

Within education, national testing is flourishing and, considering the important role which assessment plays in the production and reproduction of culture, it is important to examine further the possible impact of such practice. While England has a long tradition of national educational testing, Denmark, in contrast, has only recently introduced such tests. Thus the two countries present excellent cases for comparison and analysis in order to gain knowledge about the possible consequences of such testing schemes on pedagogy and the content of the school curriculum, as well as the impact they may have on pupils' perceptions of their potential academic …

National Trends And A Local Response: A History Of The Conservative, Evangelical Twin Tiers Christian Academy, Cary M. Shaw

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Ever since the common school era, a significant number of Protestant Americans have supported the nation’s public schools. A dramatic change occurred, however, when in “one of the most visible dissenting movements of the late twentieth century” many conservative Protestants turned away from public education to open their own private Christian schools (Carper & Hunt, 2007, p. 7). The 1970s proved to be a time of explosive growth for these new schools. According to some estimates, Christian schools opened at a rate of two per day throughout that decade (Rose, 1988, p. 34). Though thousands of these Christian schools were …

Adapting Architectural Models For Visualization Using Virtual Reality Headsets, Bernardo Martinez Dec 2015

Adapting Architectural Models For Visualization Using Virtual Reality Headsets, Bernardo Martinez

Honors Theses

Business contracts represent a main source of income for Architects. Acquiring these contracts requires the latest and most immersive technology that improves their sales against competitors. Virtual reality provides an in-depth experience that allows clients to have a reasonable assurance that the building meets their physical expectations. Videos and photos are detached and mundane; while they provide some visual representation they will not allow the user to compare his physical characteristics (height, length, width) with a 3D model. In this paper, I describe a procedure for automatically importing 3D models from Revit into Unreal4. I also describe the workflow required …

Topics In Complexity: Dynamical Patterns In The Cyberworld, Hong Qi

Open Access Dissertations

Quantitative understanding of mechanism in complex systems is a common “difficult” problem across many fields such as physical, biological, social and economic sciences. Investigation on underlying dynamics of complex systems and building individual-based models have recently been fueled by big data resulted from advancing information technology. This thesis investigates complex systems in social science, focusing on civil unrests on streets and relevant activities online. Investigation consists of collecting data of unrests from open digital source, featuring dynamical patterns underlying, making predictions and constructing models. A simple law governing the progress of two-sided confrontations is proposed with data of activities at …

Spatial And Dietary Overlap Creates Potential For Competition Between Red Snapper (Lutjanus Campechanus) And Vermilion Snapper (Rhomboplites Aurorubens), William T. Davis, J. Marcus Drymon, Sean P. Powers

University Faculty and Staff Publications

Understanding the complex nature of direct and indirect species interactions is a critical precursor to successful resource management. In the northern Gulf of Mexico fisheries ecosystem, red snapper (Lutjanus campechanus) and vermilion snapper (Rhomboplites aurorubens) are two commercially harvested species within a larger reef fish complex. These two species share similar habitats and diets; however, little is known about how these species partition habitat and dietary resources. In this study we examined the extent of spatial and dietary overlap between red snapper and vermilion snapper, and experimentally compared their feeding behavior. Field data from multiple gear …

Thermal Biology And Immersion Tolerance Of The Beringian Pseudoscorpion Wyochernes 4 Asiaticus, Susan E. Anthony, Christopher M. Buddle, Brent J Sinclair

Biology Publications

Wyochernes asiaticus (Arachnida: Pseudoscorpiones: Chernetidae) is a pseudoscorpion distributed across Beringia, the areas of Yukon, Alaska and Siberia that remained unglaciated at the last glacial maximum. Along with low temperatures, its streamside habitat suggests that submergence during flood events is an important physiological challenge for this species. We collected W. asiaticus in midsummer from 66.8N Yukon Territory, Canada, and measured thermal and immersion tolerance. Wyochernes asiaticus is freeze-avoidant, with a mean supercooling point of -6.9 C. It remains active at low temperatures (mean critical thermal minimum, CTmin, is -3.6 C) and has a critical thermal maximum (CTmax) of 37.8 C, …

© 2015 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. Although aberrant DNA methylation within imprinted domains has been reported in a variety of neoplastic diseases, it remains largely uncharacterized in the context of carcinogenesis. In this study, we induced T-cell lymphoma in mice by employing a breeding scheme involving mouse strains, LSL-KrasG12D and MMTV-Cre. We then systematically surveyed imprinted domains for DNA methylation changes during tumor progression using combined bisulfite restriction analysis and NGS-based bisulfite sequencing. We detected hyper- or hypo-methylation at the imprinting control regions (ICRs) of the Dlk1, Peg10, Peg3, Grb10, and Gnas domains. These DNA methylation changes at ICRs …

Cerebellar Dopaminergic Signaling In The Dorsomedial Striatum Of Fragile-X Mice: Significance To Autism Spectrum Disorders, Zade Ramses Holloway Dec 2015

Cerebellar Dopaminergic Signaling In The Dorsomedial Striatum Of Fragile-X Mice: Significance To Autism Spectrum Disorders, Zade Ramses Holloway

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are characterized by motor impairments and deficits in social communication potentially stemming from cerebellar Purkinje cell loss and dysfunction. Recent mapping of glutamatergic and dopaminergic pathways has provided evidence that degeneration of Purkinje cells coincides with attenuated dopamine (DA) release in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) via the cerebello-thalamo-PFCpathway. As patients with ASD exhibit repetitive behavior, abnormal reward processing, and lack of planning ability, it appears the effects of neuropathology in the cerebellum extend to the nigrostriatal pathway. Using fixed-potential amperometry and electrical stimulation of cerebellar nuclei, we investigated the possibility that the cerebellum modulates DA …

ProblemImmune changes occur during pregnancy, including a bias towards Th2 responses. This study explored maternal DNA methylation (DNA-M) of Th1, Th2, Th17, and Treg pathway genes before and during pregnancy.MethodsBlood DNA-M was measured in 54 women at age 18, and again in the first (weeks 8-21, n=39) and second (weeks 22-38, n=35) halves of pregnancy. Cytosine-phosphate-guanine (CpG) sites in genes of the T cell pathways were compared to random samples of CpGs, contrasting non-pregnancy with first and second halves of gestation using mixed linear models.ResultsMore CpGs within the Th2 pathway (35%) changed significantly compared to randomly selected CpGs (24%) in …

Profiles Of Identity And Comorbid Obesity-Hypertension: Investigating The Relation Amongst Adult African Americans, Courtney Maclin Dec 2015

Profiles Of Identity And Comorbid Obesity-Hypertension: Investigating The Relation Amongst Adult African Americans, Courtney Maclin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

African Americans are at an increased risk of comorbid obesity-hypertension. This study examined the disparity through the lens of identity based-motivation theory. A latent profile analysis was conducted, to explicate the within group diversity of African American identity endorsement, distinguishing two classes based of racial group closeness; high closeness and moderate closeness. The findings suggest that identity, particularly moderate closeness, was significantly predictive of comorbid obesity-hypertension, both directly as well as indirectly through activity engagement. Socioeconomic status, however did not moderate the relation. We conclude that investigations of identity are particularly relevant to conceptualizing predictors of comorbid obesity-hypertension for African …

Understanding Emotion In Relation To Drinking Motivation, Melissa C. Hinely Dec 2015

Understanding Emotion In Relation To Drinking Motivation, Melissa C. Hinely

Honors College Theses

Recent research has uncovered the interactions between implicit alcohol motivations and drinking behaviors after emotion inductions (Ostafin & Brooks, 2011). However, little research has supplemented such findings. This longitudinal two-part study examined the impact of a personalized emotion induction on implicit alcohol-related associations in a college sample enrolled at southern university. 215 participants were randomly assigned to one of three emotion-induction conditions (negative, neutral, or positive). During phase I, participants completed a baseline Implicit Association Tests (IAT; Greenwald et al., 1998) to assess implicit alcohol-related cognitions related to valence and motivation. Based on condition, participants were also asked to describe …

The Effects Of Size And Principal Axis Difference Ratio On The Use Of Featural And Geometric Cues, Spencer J. Price Dec 2015

The Effects Of Size And Principal Axis Difference Ratio On The Use Of Featural And Geometric Cues, Spencer J. Price

Honors College Theses

Enclosure size has been shown to affect an animal’s reliance on featural and geometric cues when reorienting in space. Previous research has shown that humans and animals rely primarily on geometric cues in smaller enclosures, and on featural cues in larger enclosures. The multiple-bearings hypothesis predicts that directional information is more discriminable than distance information when landmarks are father away from a goal. As the size of the environment increased, the distance information was less discernible than featural information. In the current study, we tested to see if the reliance on geometry changes across enclosure size. Three different Principal Axis …

Differential Impact Of Lpg-And Pg-Deficient Leishmania Major Mutants On The Immune Response Of Human Dendritic Cells, Michelle A. Favila, Nicholas S. Geraci, Asha Jayakumar, Suzanne Hickerson, Janet Mostrom, Salvatore J. Turco, Stephen M. Beverley, Mary Ann Mcdowell

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Leishmania major infection induces robust interleukin-12 (IL12) production in human dendritic cells (hDC), ultimately resulting in Th1-mediated immunity and clinical resolution. The surface of Leishmania parasites is covered in a dense glycocalyx consisting of primarily lipophosphoglycan (LPG) and other phosphoglycan-containing molecules (PGs), making these glycoconjugates the likely pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPS) responsible for IL12 induction.

METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Here we explored the role of parasite glycoconjugates on the hDC IL12 response by generating L. major Friedlin V1 mutants defective in LPG alone, (FV1 lpg1-), or generally deficient for all PGs, (FV1 lpg2-). Infection with metacyclic, infective …

Production And Economic Efficiencies Of Intensified Cow–Calf Production Management Systems, Jason M. Warner

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The objective of four experiments conducted was to evaluate production and economic efficiencies of intensified cow-calf production management systems. The first experiment tested the effect of calf age at weaning on cow and calf performance and feed utilization at 2 locations. Body weight change from early to conventional weaning time was greater for early-weaned cows. Cow BCS and conception rates were not impacted by weaning. Calf BW at conventional weaning time was greater for conventionally-weaned calves than early-weaned calves at ARDC, but greater for early-weaned than conventionally-weaned calves at PHREC. Calf ADG per unit of total feed energy intake was …

Molecular Genetic Aspects Of Iron And Copper Cross-Talk In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Qingyuan Xiang Dec 2015

Molecular Genetic Aspects Of Iron And Copper Cross-Talk In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Qingyuan Xiang

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Iron (Fe) and copper (Cu) are essential micronutrients for plants and humans who consume plants. Their functions are tightly linked. For example, both of Fe and Cu work as cofactors in superoxide dismutase proteins to prevent reactive oxygen species damage. When Fe is removed from nutrient solution, plants uptake more Cu, but how plants sense and respond to Fe status is not fully understood. This thesis includes two projects that focus on Fe and Cu interaction, homeostasis and cross-talk in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Two Arabidopsis ecotypes, Kas-1 and Tsu-1, have difference in timing of Cu accumulation in rosettes under Fe …

Impaired H-Reflex Gain During Postural Loaded Locomotion In Individuals Post-Stroke, Jing Nong Liang, David A. Brown Dec 2015

Impaired H-Reflex Gain During Postural Loaded Locomotion In Individuals Post-Stroke, Jing Nong Liang, David A. Brown

Physical Therapy Faculty Research

Successful execution of upright locomotion requires coordinated interaction between controllers for locomotion and posture. Our earlier research supported this model in the non-impaired and found impaired interaction in the post-stroke nervous system during locomotion. In this study, we sought to examine the role of the Ia afferent spinal loop, via the H-reflex response, under postural influence during a locomotor task. We tested the hypothesis that the ability to increase stretch reflex gain in response to postural loads during locomotion would be reduced post-stroke.

Strategies For The Production Of Cell Wall-Deconstructing Enzymes In Lignocellulosic Biomass And Their Utilization For Biofuel Production, Sang-Hyuck Park, Rebecca Garlock Ong, Mariam Sticklen

Department of Chemical Engineering Publications

Microbial cell wall-deconstructing enzymes are widely used in the food, wine, pulp and paper, textile, and detergent industries and will be heavily utilized by cellulosic biorefineries in the production of fuels and chemicals. Due to their ability to use freely available solar energy, genetically engineered bioenergy crops provide an attractive alternative to microbial bioreactors for the production of cell wall-deconstructing enzymes. This review article summarizes the efforts made within the last decade on the production of cell wall-deconstructing enzymes in planta for use in the deconstruction of lignocellulosic biomass. A number of strategies have been employed to increase enzyme yields …
