Organized Village Of Kake V. United States Department Of Agriculture, Maresa A. Jenson Dec 2015

Organized Village Of Kake V. United States Department Of Agriculture, Maresa A. Jenson

Public Land & Resources Law Review

In an en banc rehearing, the Ninth Circuit, in Organized Village of Kake v. United States Department of Agriculture, determined that the Roadless Rule should apply to the largest National Forest, the Alaskan Tongass. The significant socioeconomic impacts on Southeast Alaska contrasted with important environmental roadless values make the management of the Tongass National Forest unique and controversial. The Ninth Circuit concluded that Alaska, an intervener, had standing to appeal and that the 2003 Tongass Exception to the Roadless Rule was arbitrary and capricious.

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications

Cyanobacteria are photosynthetic microbes with highly differentiated membrane systems. These organisms contain an outer membrane, plasma membrane, and an internal system of thylakoid membranes where the photosynthetic and respiratory machinery are found. This existence of compartmentalization and differentiation of membrane systems poses a number of challenges for cyanobacterial cells in terms of organization and distribution of proteins to the correct membrane system. Proteomics studies have long sought to identify the components of the different membrane systems in cyanobacteria, and to date about 450 different proteins have been attributed to either the plasma membrane or thylakoid membrane. Given the complexity of …

Creating Healthy Schools: Identifying The Positive Impacts Of Practicing Sustainable Interior Design In Education Facilities, Deborah Lindsey Ketchum Dec 2015

Creating Healthy Schools: Identifying The Positive Impacts Of Practicing Sustainable Interior Design In Education Facilities, Deborah Lindsey Ketchum

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

A significant amount of research identifies a relationship between the physical environment of educational facilities and how the design can positively or negatively impact teachers, staff and students. Evidence indicates that America’s school facilities are outdated, decaying, and need repair. This presents an opportunity for interior design professionals to create high-quality learning environments through an emphasis on sustainable design practices.

This thesis examines interior spaces of two high school buildings in North Mississippi. Site A incorporated sustainable design principles while Site B did not. To limit influential variables, the two sites were selected because of the location and similar population …

Characterization Of Viral Rna-Induced Protein Kinase R Dimerization And Activation, Bushra Husain Dec 2015

Characterization Of Viral Rna-Induced Protein Kinase R Dimerization And Activation, Bushra Husain

Doctoral Dissertations

Protein kinase R (PKR) is a key component of the interferon-induced immune response to viral stress. It contains two N-terminal dsRNA binding domains (dsRBD) and a C-terminal serine/threonine kinase domain separated by a 90 residue unstructured linker of unknown function. PKR is activated by viral dsRNAs via dimerization and autophosphorylation of specific serine and threonine residues. We have developed an assay to measure dimerization of PKR while bound to various dsRNAs using Fӧrster resonance energy transfer. This is the first direct measurement of PKR dimerization upon dsRNAs binding. Our results show that inactive dimers of PKR exist in solution, and …

Refugees, Migrants, And Terrorists: German National Identity And The Social Construction Of Vietnamese And Mediterranean Boat People, Yves Mai Orsino Dec 2015

Refugees, Migrants, And Terrorists: German National Identity And The Social Construction Of Vietnamese And Mediterranean Boat People, Yves Mai Orsino

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Since the eruption of the Mediterranean crisis, European states have taken a tougher stance on admitting refugees and asylum seekers despite the fact that Europe is the original architect of the international humanitarian regime. This shift from a historically Open Europe to the Fortress Europe is particularly pronounced in Germany. Accordingly, this thesis explores why Germany has suggested more restrictive policies toward the Mediterranean refugees today when it had responded generously during the Indochinese crisis. I argue that Germany's differential responses to the Indochinese and Mediterranean refugee crises reflect its construction of the foreign groups as either assets or liabilities …

Birding Nebraska’S Central Platte Valley And Rainwater Basin, Paul A. Johnsgard

Zea E-Books Collection

Central Nebraska's Platte River and Rainwater Basin are primary stops in the migration patterns of numerous North American waterfowl, including sandhill and whooping cranes, sandpipers, geese, ducks, gulls, and shorebirds of many types. Upland species also abound there as well. The region's most eminent ornithologist provides birding and travel information for casual tourists and hard-core enthusiasts: locations, seasons, events, routes, accommodations, contacts, etc. A complete species list is also included. This birders' guide is as essential as your boots and binoculars.

The central Platte River Valley region, as defined by Brown & Johnsgard (2012) and adopted here, encompasses 12 south-central …

Improvement Of Quality Of Carica Papaya L. With Clove Oil As Preservative In Edible Coating Technology, Eny Kusrini, Anwar Usman, Chrispine Deksita Wisakanti, Rita Arbianti, Dedy Alharis Nasution

Makara Journal of Technology

We have studied utilization of essential clove oil, extracted from clove buds by hydrodistillation, as preservative in edible packaging technology. Preservative of essential clove oil was applied on chopped papaya fruits by using two methods, namely spray and brush. The effects of concentration of clove oil from 0.05 to 0.20% on the preservation of papaya fruits (Carica papaya L.) at room temperature (25 °C) were also evaluated. Physicochemical and in vitro microbiological activities on the papaya fruits that were stored at 25 oC and 85-90% relative humidity were investigated in details. The results indicate that the clove oil at concentration …

A Proteomics Approach To Investigate Mir-153-3p And Mir-205-5p Targets In Neuroblastoma Cells, Ketan S. Patil, Indranil Basak, Ramavati Pal, Hsin-Pin Ho, Guido Alves, Emmanuel J. Chang, Jan Petter Larsen, Simon Geir Møller Dec 2015

A Proteomics Approach To Investigate Mir-153-3p And Mir-205-5p Targets In Neuroblastoma Cells, Ketan S. Patil, Indranil Basak, Ramavati Pal, Hsin-Pin Ho, Guido Alves, Emmanuel J. Chang, Jan Petter Larsen, Simon Geir Møller

Publications and Research

MicroRNAs are key regulators associated with numerous diseases. In HEK293 cells, miR-153-3p and miR-205-5p down-regulate alpha-synuclein (SNCA) and Leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2), two key proteins involved in Parkinson’s disease (PD). We have used two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2D-PAGE) coupled to mass spectrometry (MS) to identify a spectrum of miR-153-3p and miR-205-5p targets in neuronal SH-SY5Y cells. We overexpressed and inhibited both microRNAs in SH-SY5Y cells and through comparative proteomics profiling we quantified ~240 protein spots from each analysis. Combined, thirty-three protein spots were identified showing significant (p-value < 0.05) changes in abundance. Modulation of miR-153-3p resulted in seven up-regulated proteins and eight down-regulated proteins. miR-205 modulation resulted in twelve up-regulated proteins and six down-regulated proteins. Several of the proteins are associated with neuronal processes, including peroxiredoxin-2 and -4, cofilin-1, prefoldin 2, alpha-enolase, human nucleoside diphosphate kinase B (Nm23) and 14-3-3 protein epsilon. Many of the differentially expressed proteins are involved in diverse pathways including metabolism, neurotrophin signaling, actin cytoskeletal regulation, HIF-1 signaling and the proteasome indicating that miR-153-3p and miR-205-5p are involved in the regulation of a wide variety of biological processes in neuroblastoma cells.
