Characterization Of Pressure-Driven And Electro-Kinetically Driven Flow In A Micro-Fluidic Chip Using Particle Imaging Velocimetry, Alexis Weckel
Characterization Of Pressure-Driven And Electro-Kinetically Driven Flow In A Micro-Fluidic Chip Using Particle Imaging Velocimetry, Alexis Weckel
Master's Theses
The flow profiles of pressure-driven and electro-kinetic driven flows were compared for a microfluidic chip. It was found that the pressure-driven flow had a parabolic profile while the electro-kinetic flow had a plug shaped flow profile. The measured velocities were similar to those determined by the Poiseuille flow model and the Helmholtz-Smoltchowski equation. Flow uniformity is very important for control in microfluidic mixers. Parabolic flow profiles lead to inconsistent reactions while the more uniform plug shape flow allow for a more steady reaction across the channel. Previous work had been performed to measure the flow of a solution of fluorescent …

Abstract
BACKGROUND:
Imaging and image analysis advances are yielding increasingly complete and complicated records of cellular events in tissues and whole embryos. The ability to follow hundreds to thousands of cells at the individual level demands a spatio-temporal data infrastructure: tools to assemble and collate knowledge about development spatially in a manner analogous to geographic information systems (GIS). Just as GIS indexes items or events based on their spatio-temporal or 4D location on the Earth these tools would organize knowledge based on location within the tissues or embryos. Developmental processes are highly context-specific, but the complexity of the 4D environment …

Kink, Singular Soliton And Periodic Solutions To Class Of Nonlinear Equations, Marwan Alquran, Safwan Al-Shara, Sabreen Al-Nimrat
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, we extend the ordinary differential Duffing equation into a partial differential equation. We study the traveling wave solutions to this model by using the G'/G expansion method. Then, based on the obtained results given for the Duffing equation, we generate kink, singular soliton and periodic solutions for a coupled integrable dispersionless nonlinear system. All the solutions given in this work are verified.

Klf4-Sqstm1/P62-Associated Prosurvival Autophagy Contributes To Carfilzomib Resistance In Multiple Myeloma Models., Irene Riz, Teresa S. Hawley, Robert G. Hawley
Anatomy and Regenerative Biology Faculty Publications
Multiple myeloma (MM) is an incurable clonal plasma cell malignancy. Because of a high rate of immunoglobulin synthesis, the endoplasmic reticulum of MM cells is subjected to elevated basal levels of stress. Consequently, proteasome inhibitors, which exacerbate this stress by inhibiting ubiquitin-proteasome-mediated protein degradation, are an important new class of chemotherapeutic agents being used to combat this disease. However, MM cells still develop resistance to proteasome inhibitors such as carfilzomib. Toward this end, we have established carfilzomib-resistant derivatives of MM cell lines. We found that resistance to carfilzomib was associated with elevated levels of prosurvival autophagy, and Kruppel-like factor 4 …

The aims of this article are: 1) to examine the associations between health provider-diagnosed depression and multimorbidity, the condition of suffering from more than two chronic illnesses; 2) to assess the unique contribution of chronic illness in the prediction of depression; and 3) to suggest practice changes that would address risk of depression among individuals with chronic illnesses. Data collected in a cross-sectional community health study among adult Mexicans (n= 274) living in a low income neighborhood (colonia) in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico, were examined. We tested the hypotheses that individuals who reported suffering chronic illnesses …
Eric Shanower And The Visual Mythography Of Age Of Bronze, Michael R. Hale
Eric Shanower And The Visual Mythography Of Age Of Bronze, Michael R. Hale
English Department Theses
Eric Shanower's groundbreaking comic series Age of Bronze is examined as a new kind of text, a mythographic text. By merging the classical Greek stories surrounding the Trojan War into a concise and linear graphic narrative, Shanower crafts a new kind of mythography through visual and textual media. This work aims to explore how mythography and comics intersect within Shanower's work.

Combination Of Id2 Knockdown Whole Tumor Cells And Checkpoint Blockade: A Potent Vaccine Strategy In A Mouse Neuroblastoma Model., Lina Chakrabarti, Clifford Morgan, Anthony D. Sandler
Surgery Faculty Publications
Tumor vaccines have held much promise, but to date have demonstrated little clinical success. This lack of success is conceivably due to poor tumor antigen presentation combined with immuno-suppressive mechanisms exploited by the tumor itself. Knock down of Inhibitor of differentiation protein 2 (Id2-kd) in mouse neuroblastoma whole tumor cells rendered these cells immunogenic. Id2-kd neuroblastoma (Neuro2a) cells (Id2-kd N2a) failed to grow in most immune competent mice and these mice subsequently developed immunity against further wild-type Neuro2a tumor cell challenge. Id2-kd N2a cells grew aggressively in immune-compromised hosts, thereby establishing the immunogenicity of these cells. Therapeutic vaccination with Id2-kd …

FOXM1, a member of the forkhead box transcription factor family, plays a key role in cell cycling progression by regulating the expression of critical G1/S and G2/M phase transition genes. In vivo studies reveal that Foxm1 null mice have a 91% lethality rate at e18.5 due to significant cardiovascular and hepatic hypoplasia. Thus, FOXM1 has emerged as a key protein regulating mitotic division and cell proliferation necessary for embryogenesis. In the current study, we assess the requirement for Foxm1 in the developing pituitary gland. We find that Foxm1 is expressed in the pituitary at embryonic days 10.5-e18.5 and localizes with …
Women At A Music Festival: Biological Sex Defining Motivation And Behavioral Intentions, Robertico R. Croes, Seung Hyan Lee
Women At A Music Festival: Biological Sex Defining Motivation And Behavioral Intentions, Robertico R. Croes, Seung Hyan Lee
Rosen Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This study aims to assess whether biological sex impacts motivation and experience at a music festival in Curacao and is premised on different consumption behavior induced by biological sex. Differences in motivations and behavioral intentions based on biological sex were observed. The study further revealed that biological sex plays an important role in framing the experience and behavior intentions of the female segment. This finding is relevant as females are becoming an important mainstream at music festivals and travel and leisure consumers. Biological sex as a predictor of motivation and behavioral intentions has wider effects than just increasing demand; it …

Strong Uniform Consistency Of Hazard Function With Functional Explicatory Variable In Single Functional Index Model Under Censored Data, Omar Belabbaci, Abbes Rabhi, Sara Soltani
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper we deal with nonparametric estimate of the conditional hazard function, when the covariate is functional. Kernel type estimators for the conditional hazard function of a scalar response variable Y given a Hilbertian random variable X are introduced, where the observations are linked with a single-index structure. We establish the pointwise almost complete convergence and the uniform almost complete convergence (with the rate) of the kernel estimate of this model in various situations, including censored and non-censored data. The rates of convergence emphasize the crucial role played by the small ball probabilities with respect to the distribution of …

On The Analytic Solution For The Steady Drainage Of Magnetohydrodynamic (Mhd) Sisko Fluid Film Down A Vertical Belt, A. M. Siddiqui, Hameed Ashraf, T. Haroon, A. Walait
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
This paper presents an analytic study for the steady drainage of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) Sisko fluid film down a vertical belt. The fluid film is assumed to be electrically conducting in the presence of a uniform transverse magnetic field. An analytic solution for the resulting non linear ordinary differential equation is obtained using the Adomian decomposition method. The effects of various available parameters especially the Hartmann number are observed on the velocity profile, shear stress and vorticity vector to get a physical insight of the problem. Furthermore, the shear thinning and shear thickening characteristics of the Sisko fluid are discussed. The …

Suspension Model For Blood Flow Through A Tapering Catheterized Inclined Artery With Asymmetric Stenosis, Devajyoti Biswas, Moumita Paul
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
We intend to study a particle fluid suspension model for blood flow through an axially asymmetric but radially symmetric mild stenosis in the annular region of an inclined tapered artery and a co-axial catheter in a suitable flow geometry has been considered to investigate the influence of velocity slip at the stenotic wall as well as hematocrit, shape parameter. The model also includes the tapering effect and inclination of the artery. Expressions for the flow variables have been derived analytically and their variations with various flow parameters are represented graphically. The results for the different values of the parameters involved …

Resolving the debate surrounding the nature and controls of seasonal variation in the structure and metabolism of Amazonian rainforests is critical to understanding their response to climate change. In situ studies have observed higher photosynthetic and evapotranspiration rates, increased litterfall and leaf flushing during the Sunlight-rich dry season. Satellite data also indicated higher greenness level, a proven surrogate of photosynthetic carbon fixation, and leaf area during the dry season relative to the wet season. Some recent reports suggest that rainforests display no seasonal variations and the previous results were satellite measurement artefacts. Therefore, here we re-examine several years of data …

Mathematical Modeling And Analysis Of Leukemia: Effect Of External Engineered T Cells Infusion, Manju Agarwal, Archana S. Bhadauria
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, a nonlinear model is proposed and analyzed to study the spread of Leukemia by considering the effect of genetically engineered patients T cells to attack cancer cells. The model is governed by four dependent variables namely; naive or susceptible blood cells, infected or dysfunctional blood cells, cancer cells and immune cells. The model is analyzed by using the stability theory of differential equations and numerical simulation. We have observed that the system is stable in the local and global sense if antigenicity rate or rate of stimulation of immune cells is greater than a threshold value dependent …

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications
In this study, we investigated wolf feeding ecology in Kars province, north-eastern Turkey, by analysing 72 scat samples collected in spring 2013. Ongoing camera trap surveys suggest that large wild ungulates are exceptionally rare in the region. On the contrary, livestock is abundant. Accordingly, scats analysis revealed that livestock constituted most of the biomass intake for wolves, although small mammals were the most frequent prey items. Wild ungulates were occasional prey, and although wolves make use of the main village garbage dump as a food source, garbage remains were scarce in scat samples. Wolf dependence on anthropogenic resources, primarily livestock, …
