SMYD proteins are an exciting field of study as they are linked to many types of cancer- related pathways. Cardiac and skeletal muscle development and function also depend on SMYD proteins opening a possible avenue for cardiac-related treatment. Previous crystal structure studies have revealed that this special class of protein lysine methyltransferases have a bilobal structure, and an open–closed motion may regulate substrate specificity. Here we use the molecular dynamics simulation to investigate the still-poorly-understood SMYD2 dynamics. Fourteen percent of U.S. cattle slaughtered in 2011 had liver abscesses, resulting in reduced carcass weight, quality, and value. Liver abscesses can result from a common bacterial cause, Fusobacterium necrophorum, which inhabits rumen lesions caused by acidosis and subsequently escapes into the blood stream, is filtered by the liver, and causes abscesses in the liver. Our aim was to identify SNP associated with liver abscesses in beef cattle. Although exercise training has been utilized to improve vascular function in animals and humans, the impact of moderate intensity exercise training on fibrinolytic activities and nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability has not been well documented. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to examine the impact of moderate intensity aerobic exercise training on fat mass, blood lipid profiles, fibrinolytic activity, and NO levels in high-fat-diet induced rats. Bovine coronavirus is a primary cause of neonatal calf diarrhea worldwide, and is also associated with acute diarrhea in adult cattle during the winter season. There are no reports on molecular characterization of bovine coronavirus in Ireland, and little data exists apart from serological studies.

In this study, 11 neonatal (mean age 9 days) calf BCoV strains from the south of Ireland were collected over a one year period and characterized using molecular methods. The authors highlight findings from data collected in their own classrooms and with families and communities for the Professional Dyads in Culturally Relevant (PDCRT) teaching project,[1] a collaborative research partnership (2013-2015) between teacher educator-teacher dads [2] aimed at generating, investigating, and documenting culturally relevant/responsive practices for early childhood contexts.

The adaptive cycle was proposed as a conceptual model to portray patterns of change in complex systems. Despite the model having potential for elucidating change across systems, it has been used mainly as a metaphor, describing system dynamics qualitatively. We use a quantitative approach for testing premises (reorganisation, conservatism, adaptation) in the adaptive cycle, using Baltic Sea phytoplankton communities as an example of such complex system dynamics. Phytoplankton organizes in recurring spring and summer blooms, a well-established paradigm in planktology and succession theory, with characteristic temporal trajectories during blooms that may be consistent with adaptive cycle phases. Background: Differential Shannon entropy (DSE) and differential coefficient of variation (DCV) are effective metrics for the study of gene expression data. They can serve to augment differential expression (DE), and be applied in numerous settings whenever one seeks to measure differences in variability rather than mere differences in magnitude. A general purpose, easily accessible tool for DSE and DCV would help make these two metrics available to data scientists. Automated p value computations would additionally be useful, and are often easier to interpret than raw test statistic values alone.

Previously, transplantation of ovaries from young, cycling mice into old, postreproductive-age mice increased life span and decreased cardiomyopathy at death. We anticipated that the same factors that increased life span and decreased cardiomyopathy could also influence the progression of orthopedic disease. At 11 months of age, prepubertally ovariectomized and ovary-intact mice (including reproductively cycling and acyclic mice) received new 60-day-old ovaries. At death, epiphyseal bone in the proximal tibia and the distal femur and mid-shaft tibial and femoral diaphyseal bone was analyzed with micro-computed tomography. The objective of the present study is to examine the effects of socioeconomic factors on participation in physical activity among Malays in Malaysia. Drawing on a nationally representative sample that contains 17,515 respondents, a logit model is developed to estimate the likelihood of adopting a physically active lifestyle. The results of the present study show that income, age, sex, education, house locality, and employment status are significantly related to the levels of physical activity. In particular, there are negative relationships between higher-income earners, the elderly, females, the less-educated, urban dwellers, and the non-working adults, and the likelihood of being physically …

Local environmental features can shape hybrid zone dynamics when hybrids are bounded by ecotones or when patchily distributed habitat types lead to a corresponding mosaic of genotypes. We investigated the role of marsh-level characteristics in shaping a hybrid zone between two recently diverged avian taxa – Saltmarsh (Ammodramus caudacutus) and Nelson's (A. nelsoni) sparrows. These species occupy different niches where allopatric, with caudacutus restricted to coastal marshes and nelsoni found in a broader array of wetland and grassland habitats and co-occur in tidal marshes in sympatry. Male breast cancer comprises less than 1% of breast cancer diagnoses. Although estrogen exposure has been causally linked to the development of female breast cancers, the etiology of male breast cancer is unclear. Here, we show via fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) that the Y chromosome was clonally lost at a frequency of ~16% (5/31) in two independent cohorts of male breast cancer patients. We also show somatic loss of the Y chromosome gene TMSB4Y in a male breast tumor, confirming prior reports of loss at this locus in male breast cancers. To further understand …

This study examines how black fathers and sons in the U.S. conceptualize manhood and masculinity and the racial socializing practices of black men. Drawing upon data from an ethnography on Black male schooling, this paper uses the interviews with fathers and sons to explore how race and gender intersect in how Black males make meaning of their gendered performances. Common notions of manhood are articulated including independence, responsibility and providership. However, race and gender intersect in particular ways for black men. The fathers engaged in particular racial socializing practices preparing their sons for encounters with racism. Both fathers and sons …

The conjugates are amphiphilic, and tend to localize at the interface between water domains and lipid domains. Lignin was extracted using alkali distillation from rice husk, which is the food processing waste. As the structure of lignin and bisphenol A is similar, lignin modified bisphenol A epoxy resin could be prepared under alkali as catalyst by blending them. It can be concluded that when the lignin substitution rate was 20%, the epoxy value of the epoxy resin was 0.3, the weight-average molecular weight was 6 045, and the molecular weight distribution was relatively uniform.

To systematically analyze and evaluate amino acids of dried osmund, 17 kinds of amino acids were derivatized with 6-aminoquinolyl-N-hydroxysuccinimidyl carbamate and then were analyzed by ultra performance liquid chromatography. L-tryptophan was quantitatively analyzed by ultraviolet spectrophotometric. Nutritional value evaluation of dried osmund protein was synthetically studied by methods of ratio coefficient of amino acid and fuzzy discernment. The results showed that the sample had 18 kinds of amino acids. In order to improve the qualities of dried hosui pear(Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai.) slices and shorten the drying time, short- and medium- wave infrared drying was applied to drying hosui pear slices. The effects of drying temperatures, drying power, and radiation distances on the drying characteristic of hosui pear were investigated. Meanwhile, the impact of short- and medium- wave infrared drying on color, texture and moisture content of dried hosui pear were analyzed. In present study, Gualou seed proteins were extracted from its by-products, and the molecular properties of the proteins were also observed. The results showed that the Gualou seed proteins mainly consisted of salt-soluble protein (55.3% of extracting yield) and alkali-soluble protein (15.8% of extracting yield), and the alkali-soluble protein may be linked with pigments because the protein solution appeared to be dark brown. Sodium dodecyl sulfonate-polyacrylamide gelelectrophoresis analysis was used to test the subunit molecular weight distribution and the result revealed that subunits of salt-soluble and alkali-soluble proteins mainly distributed from 10 to 32 kDa. Report a study on the modification conditions of attapulgite towards improving its adsorption affinity and specificity of the chill haze protein in beer. Quantity of attapulgite added and adsorption time used were optimized using univariate and multivariate analysis with orthogonal parameter sets. Experiments conducted were focusing on the non-biological stability, foam stability and filtration performance of beer. Adsorption specificity test of the modified attapulgite with the chill haze protein in beer was also presented.
