Innovations in Managing Western Water: New Approaches for Balancing Environmental, Social and Economic Outcomes (Martz Summer Conference, June 11-12)

Many aspects of western water allocation and management are the product of independent and uncoordinated actions, several occurring a century or more ago. However, in this modern era of water scarcity, it is increasingly acknowledged that more coordinated and deliberate decision-making is necessary for effectively balancing environmental, social, and economic objectives. In recent years, a variety of forums, processes, and tools have emerged to better manage the connections between regions, sectors, and publics linked by shared water systems. In this event, we explore the cutting edge efforts, the latest points of contention, and the opportunities for further progress.

Factors Influencing Asiatic Oak Weevil Interactions With Native Ecosystem Engineers Over Time, Daniel Rothschild O'Brien Jun 2015

Factors Influencing Asiatic Oak Weevil Interactions With Native Ecosystem Engineers Over Time, Daniel Rothschild O'Brien

Theses

I sought to build a model to predict current and future abundance of Asiatic oak weevil (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Cyrtepistomus castaneus) by using the relative abundance of leaf tying and leaf rolling caterpillars. The Asiatic oak weevil is an exotic species that has been observed inside leaf ties and leaf rolls made by native Lepidoptera caterpillars. Chapter one is a review of the known relationships between animal constructs and exotic species. Within this review I transition from natural structures, to animal architects, and to ecosystem engineers and how they have a population dynamic impact on the invasive species. I also discuss …

Accentuating Death Signaling In Colon Cancer Cells: A Chemical Biology Approach, Avijeet S. Chopra Jun 2015

Accentuating Death Signaling In Colon Cancer Cells: A Chemical Biology Approach, Avijeet S. Chopra

Doctoral Dissertations

Colon cancers harbor a variety of mutations that result in uncontrolled proliferation and suppression of apoptotic pathways. The initial objective of our work was to understand how colon cancer cells survive their inflammatory micro-environment, including high levels of TNF and other death ligands. Towards this goal, we identified a series of mitotically acting piperazine-based compounds that sensitized colon cancer cells to TNF-dependent apoptosis. The most potent of these compounds, 1-(3-chlorophenyl)-4-(2-ethoxybenzoyl)piperazine or AK301, arrested cells in a mitotic state (EC50 ≈ 115 nM) in which the TNF receptor was efficiently coupled to caspase-8 activation. Our structure-activity relationship studies predicted AK301 …

"A Year Of Life After River Stewards", Allie Rakowski

Blog Archive: River Reflections at the University of Dayton

It's been one year since graduating from the University of Dayton with a BS in Biology and SEE, minor. When friends and family ask me what I've been doing or what I've done since graduation I usually give them the short version, "I've been taking a few seasonal jobs and applying to graduate school." While that is true, it nowhere near encompasses the experiences I've had, the people I've met, and the landscapes that I've seen. Right after graduation I took an internship with the Ohio EPA in their surface water division in Columbus. I specifically worked under the Wetland …

Understanding The Role Of Estrogen In The Mucosal Immune Response, Youna Choi, Dr. Eric Wilson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Most antigens (foreign substances) enter an organism via mucosal surfaces. Thus, understanding the mechanisms involved in immune protection at these surfaces is of paramount importance. Immune responses are highly dependent on homing mechanisms responsible for directing lymphocyte (white blood cell) migration and accumulation at target tissues. Estrogen control of lymphocyte homing within the uterus has recently been established (2).

Genes Regulating Epithelial Polarity Are Critical Suppressors Of Esophageal Oncogenesis, Xiu-Min Li, Hui Wang, Li-Li Zhu, Run-Zhen Zhao, Hong-Long Ji

Cellular and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Esophageal cancer is an aggressive disease featured by early lymphatic and hematogenous dissemination, and is the sixth leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. The proper formation of apicobasal polarity is essential for normal epithelium physiology and tissue homeostasis, while loss of polarity is a hallmark of cancer development including esophageal oncogenesis. In this review, we summarized the stages of esophageal cancer development associated with the loss or deregulation of epithelial cell apicobasal polarity. Loss of epithelial apicobasal polarity exerts an indispensable role in the initiation of esophageal oncogenesis, tumor progression, and the advancement of tumors from benign to malignant. In …

Predicting And Exploring Network Components Involved In Pathogenesis In The Malaria Parasite Via Novel Subnetwork Alignments, Hong Cai, Timothy G. Lilburn, Changjin Hong, Jianying Gu, Rui Kuang, Yufeng Wang

Publications and Research

Background Malaria is a major health threat, affecting over 40% of the world's population. The latest report released by the World Health Organization estimated about 207 million cases of malaria infection, and about 627,000 deaths in 2012 alone. During the past decade, new therapeutic targets have been identified and are at various stages of characterization, thanks to the emerging omics-based technologies. However, the mechanism of malaria pathogenesis remains largely unknown. In this paper, we employ a novel neighborhood subnetwork alignment approach to identify network components that are potentially involved in pathogenesis. Results Our module-based subnetwork alignment approach identified 24 functional …

Specific Intensity Direct Current (Dc) Electric Field Improves Neural Stem Cell Migration And Enhances Differentiation Towards Βiii-Tubulin+ Neurons, Huiping Zhao, Amanda Steiger, Mitch Nohner, Hui Ye

Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Control of stem cell migration and differentiation is vital for efficient stem cell therapy. Literature reporting electric field–guided migration and differentiation is emerging. However, it is unknown if a field that causes cell migration is also capable of guiding cell differentiation— and the mechanisms for these processes remain unclear. Here, we report that a 115 V/m direct current (DC) electric field can induce directional migration of neural precursor cells (NPCs). Whole cell patching revealed that the cell membrane depolarized in the electric field, and buffering of extracellular calcium via EGTA prevented cell migration under these conditions. Immunocytochemical staining indicated that …

Submarine landslide deposits have been mapped around many volcanic islands, but interpretations of their structure, composition, and emplacement are hindered by the challenges of investigating deposits directly. Here we report on detailed observations of four landslide deposits around Montserrat collected by Remotely Operated Vehicles, integrating direct imagery and sampling with sediment core and geophysical data. These complementary approaches enable a more comprehensive view of large-scale mass-wasting processes around island-arc volcanoes than has been achievable previously. The most recent landslide occurred at 11.5–14 ka (Deposit 1; 1.7 km3) and formed a radially spreading hummocky deposit that is morphologically similar …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Background: Laboratory and field studies showed that repellent, irritant and toxic actions of common public health insecticides reduce human-vector contact and thereby interrupt disease transmission. One of the more effective strategies to reduce disease risk involves the use of long-lasting treated bednets. However, development of insecticide resistance in mosquito populations makes it imperative to find alternatives to these insecticides. Our previous study identified four essential oils as alternatives to pyrethroids: Thymus vulgaris, Cymbopogon winterianus, Cuminum cyminum, Cinnamomum zeylanicum. The objectives of this study were to identify active compounds of these essential oils, to characterize their biological activity, and to examine …

Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research

Valid biomarkers of motor system function after stroke could improve clinical decision-making. Electroencephalography-based measures are safe, inexpensive, and accessible in complex medical settings and so are attractive candidates. This study examined specific electroencephalography cortical connectivity measures as biomarkers by assessing their relationship with motor deficits across 28 days of intensive therapy. Resting-state connectivity measures were acquired four times using dense array (256 leads) electroencephalography in 12 hemiparetic patients (7.3 ± 4.0 months post-stroke, age 26–75 years, six male/six female) across 28 days of intensive therapy targeting arm motor deficits. Structural magnetic resonance imaging measured corticospinal tract injury and infarct volume. …

Network-Based Stratification Analysis Of 13 Major Cancer Types Using Mutations In Panels Of Cancer Genes., Xue Zhong, Hushan Yang, Shuyang Zhao, Yu Shyr, Bingshan Li

Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Cancers are complex diseases with heterogeneous genetic causes and clinical outcomes. It is critical to classify patients into subtypes and associate the subtypes with clinical outcomes for better prognosis and treatment. Large-scale studies have comprehensively identified somatic mutations across multiple tumor types, providing rich datasets for classifying patients based on genomic mutations. One challenge associated with this task is that mutations are rarely shared across patients. Network-based stratification (NBS) approaches have been proposed to overcome this challenge and used to classify tumors based on exome-level mutations. In routine research and clinical applications, however, usually only a small panel of …

Osteological Variation Among Extreme Morphological Forms In The Mexican Salamander Genus Chiropterotriton (Amphibia: Plethodontidae): Morphological Evolution And Homoplasy, David M. Darda, David B. Wake

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Osteological variation is recorded among and within four of the most distinctive species of the Mexican salamander genus Chiropterotriton. Analysis of the data is consistent with the monophyletic status of the genus and documents previously unrecorded intraspecific and interspecific variation. Most of the recorded variation involves qualitative and quantitative proportional differences, but four fixed differences constitute autapomorphic states that affirm and diagnose some species (C. dimidiatus, C. magnipes). Osteological variation in 15 characters is analyzed with respect to predictions generated from four hypotheses: 1) phylogeny, 2) adaptation to specific habitats (the four species include …

New Insights Into The Evolution Of The Human Diet From Faecal Biomarker Analysis In Wild Chimpanzee And Gorilla Faeces, Ainara Sistiaga, Richard Wrangham, Jessica M. Rothman, Roger E. Summons

Publications and Research

Our understanding of early human diets is based on reconstructed biomechanics of hominin jaws, bone and teeth isotopic data, tooth wear patterns, lithic, taphonomic and zooarchaeological data, which do not provide information about the relative amounts of different types of foods that contributed most to early human diets. Faecal biomarkers are proving to be a valuable tool in identifying relative proportions of plant and animal tissues in Palaeolithic diets. A limiting factor in the application of the faecal biomarker approach is the striking absence of data related to the occurrence of faecal biomarkers in non-human primate faeces. In this study …

An on-going effort in the characterization of exoplanetary systems is the accurate determination of host star properties. This effort extends to the relatively bright host stars of planets discovered with the radial velocity method. The Transit Ephemeris Refinement and Monitoring Survey (TERMS) is aiding in these efforts as part of its observational campaign for exoplanet host stars. One of the first known systems is that of 70 Virginis, which harbors a jovian planet in an eccentric orbit. Here we present a complete characterization of this system with a compilation of TERMS photometry, spectroscopy, and interferometry. We provide fundamental properties of …

Destabilisation Of Dimeric 14-3-3 Proteins As A Novel Approach To Anti-Cancer Therapeutics, Joanna M. Woodcock, Carl Coolen, Katy L. Goodwin, Dong Jae Baek, Robert Bittman, Michael S. Samuel, Stuart M. Pitson, Angel F. Lopez

Publications and Research

14-3-3 proteins play a pivotal role in controlling cell proliferation and survival, two commonly dysregulated hallmarks of cancers. 14-3-3 protein expression is enhanced in many human cancers and correlates with more aggressive tumors and poor prognosis, suggesting a role for 14-3-3 proteins in tumorigenesis and/or progression. We showed previously that the dimeric state of 14-3-3 proteins is regulated by the lipid sphingosine, a physiological inducer of apoptosis. As the functions of 14-3-3 proteins are dependent on their dimeric state, this sphingosine-mediated 14-3-3 regulation provides a possible means to target dimeric 14-3-3 for therapeutic effect. However, sphingosine mimics are needed that …

Ongoing climate change can alter conditions for plant growth, in turn affecting ecological and social systems. While there have been considerable advances in understanding the physical aspects of climate change, comprehensive analyses integrating climate, biological, and social sciences are less common. Here we use climate projections under alternative mitigation scenarios to show how changes in environmental variables that limit plant growth could impact ecosystems and people. We show that although the global mean number of days above freezing will increase by up to 7% by 2100 under “business as usual” (representative concentration pathway [RCP] 8.5), suitable growing days will actually …
