Arduino open-source microcontrollers are well known in sensor applications for scientific equipment and for controlling RepRap 3D printers. Recently low-cost open-source gas metal arc weld (GMAW) RepRap 3D printers have been developed. The entry-level welders used have minimal controls and therefore lack any real-time measurement of welder voltage or current. The preliminary work on process optimization of GMAW 3D printers requires a low-cost sensor and data logger system to measure welder current and voltage. This paper reports on the development of a low-cost open-source power measurement sensor system based on Arduino architecture. The sensor system was designed, built, and tested …
The Ideological Dilemmas Inherent In Informal Learning Spaces: A Discourse Analysis Of Preservice Teacher Talk, Jessica Nina Lester, Lisa Scherff, Trena M. Paulus
The Ideological Dilemmas Inherent In Informal Learning Spaces: A Discourse Analysis Of Preservice Teacher Talk, Jessica Nina Lester, Lisa Scherff, Trena M. Paulus
The Qualitative Report
Informal learning spaces, such as summer reading programs, have the potential to both motivate children and provide opportunities for preservice teachers to try out new practices. However, there is little research on the talk that occurs in these informal learning spaces, particularly those intended to function as third spaces. Audio recordings of meetings between preservice teachers and high school students talking together about young adult literature in a space intended to function as a third space were analyzed to explore how discourse choices shaped the participants' practices. We found that the participants both resisted and reproduced the traditional classroom in …

The Experiences Of Students With Autism Spectrum Disorders In College: A Heuristic Exploration, Fleur Wiorkowski
The Qualitative Report
This inquiry was conducted to describe the experience of individuals with autism spectrum disorders who have experienced the higher education system. All participants have been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder and experienced some aspect of the higher education system. Data was collected using primarily face to face interviews. The data was then analyzed using the heuristic methodology of Dr. Clark Moustakas (1990). Ultimately, many patterns and themes emerged from this analysis, culminating in a creative synthesis which sums up the experience. The themes showed the highs and lows of being a college student coupled with the experience of having …
Tooth Size Discrepancy Importance As A Diagnostic Tool For Orthodontic Treatment Planning: A Review, Ahmad Hajar
Tooth Size Discrepancy Importance As A Diagnostic Tool For Orthodontic Treatment Planning: A Review, Ahmad Hajar
International Arab Journal of Dentistry
The main goal in comprehensive orthodontic treatment is to obtain an optimal functional occlusion, overbite and overjet. Tooth size discrepancies of the maxillary and the mandibular arches are an important factor for achieving this goal. Inadequate relationships between the maxillary and the mandibular teeth can pose problems in achieving the ideal occlusion. Early treatment planning and proper diagnosis of tooth size discrepancy minimizes problems attained at finishing stage. Bolton’s ratios set an ideal relationship of maxillary tooth width to mandibular tooth width. This article shows the significance, validity as a diagnostic tool and the methods of measuring tooth size discrepancy.

In August 2014 a conference on “Model reduction across disciplines” was held in Leicester, UK. As a scientific field, model reduction is an important part of mathematical modelling and data analysis with very wide areas of applications. The main scientific goal of the conference was to facilitate interdisciplinary discussion of model reduction and coarse-graining methodologies in order to reveal their general mathematical nature. This time, however, the conference had an additional personal and more profound mission – it was dedicated to the 60th birthday of Professor Alexander Gorban (albeit with some delay) whose fantastic achievements in applying model reduction techniques …

This review essay implicitly revisits human and non-human power relations within a critical animal studies context that understands the affective conjunction between the manipulation of our worlds (action, partly through knowledge) and degrees of involvement with these others that live in our worlds (comportment via emotions). I take Louise Westling’s new study as the platform for an analysis of two book-length poems, The Autobiography of Red (1998) and red doc> (2013), which centre on the life of a shepherd, Geryon. Rather than revisit classical pastoral, these texts extract power-relations that classical myth and pastoral spatialise. In so doing, I argue, …

State-of-the-art radiotherapy treatment planning systems provide reliable estimates of the therapeutic radiation but are known to underestimate or neglect the stray radiation exposures. Most commonly, stray radiation exposures are reconstructed using empirical formulas or lookup tables. The purpose of this study was to develop the basic physics of a model capable of calculating the total absorbed dose both inside and outside of the therapeutic radiation beam for external beam photon therapy. The model was developed using measurements of total absorbed dose in a water-box phantom from a 6 MV medical linear accelerator to calculate dose profiles in both the in-plane …

Thyroid Autoimmunity As A Window To Autoimmunity: An Explanation For Sex Differences In The Prevalence Of Thyroid Autoimmunity, Stephen Merrill, Ying Mu
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
Autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITDs), predominately Graves׳ disease and Hashimoto׳s thyroiditis, comprise the most common autoimmune diseases in humans. Both have the production of anti-thyroid antibody as an important aspect and both are much more prevalent in females, being at least 10 times more common than in males. Using these two clues, a hypothesis for the initiation of thyroid autoimmunity is proposed that helps to make the case that the thyroid is one of the most sensitive sites for autoimmunity and helps account for the prevalence and the observed sex differences in AITDs and associated diseases, such as type 1 diabetes …

Systemic siRNA administration to target and treat glioblastoma, one of the most deadly cancers, requires robust and efficient delivery platform without immunogenicity. Here we report newly emerged multivalent naked RNA nanoparticle (RNP) based on pRNA 3-way-junction (3WJ) from bacteriophage phi29 to target glioblastoma cells with folate (FA) ligand and deliver siRNA for gene silencing. Systemically injected FA-pRNA-3WJ RNPs successfully targeted and delivered siRNA into brain tumor cells in mice, and efficiently reduced luciferase reporter gene expression (4-fold lower than control). The FA-pRNA-3WJ RNP also can target human patient-derived glioblastoma stem cells, thought to be responsible for tumor initiation and deadly …

The human head louse is a cosmopolitan ectoparasite and frequently infests many people, particularly school-age children. Due to widespread pyrethroid resistance and the lack of efficient resistance management, there has been a considerable interest in the protection of uninfested people and prevention of reinfestation by disrupting lice transfer. In this study, two nonclinical model systems (in vitro and in vivo) were used to determine the efficacy of the infestation deterrents, Elimax lotion and Elimax shampoo, against human head lice or poultry chewing lice, respectively. With in vitro assessments, female head lice exhibited significantly higher avoidance responses to hair tufts treated …

Feeding Behavior Of Tonkean Macaques (Macaca Tonkeana) In Schmutzer Primates Center And Ragunan Zoo, Jakarta, Fery Dwi Riptianingsih, Dyah Perwitasari Farajallah, Dewi Apri Astuti
Makara Journal of Science
Tonkean macaques are one of seven endemic macaque species on Sulawesi Island. Feeding management in captivity should pay attention to the quality, palatability, and feeding behavior patterns of animals. The goal of this study was to compare the feeding behavior of two social groups of Tonkean macaques at Schmutzer Primates Center (SPC) and Ragunan Zoo (RZ) with different captive management, which was expected to affect feeding behavior. Ad libitum sampling was used to observe daily behavior and hierarchy, while focal animal sampling was used to observe feeding behavior and feed preference. Data were collected from September 2013 until March 2014 …

Xylooligosaccharide Production From Tobacco Stalk Xylan Using Xylanase Streptomyces Sp. Bo 3.2, Muhammad Nur Kholis, Yopi, Anja Meryandini
Makara Journal of Science
Tobacco stalk (TS), which is one type of lignocellulosic material, has a xylan content of up to 21.9%. Lignocellulose can be used to produce xylooligosaccharides (XOs). XOs are dietary fibers that have prebiotic activity. This study aimed to produce XOs from tobacco stalk xylan using xylanase from Streptomyces sp. BO 3.2. After the TS was delignified, the xylan was extracted using the alkali method. The delignification process, which used 1% natrium hypoclorite (NaOCl), decreased the lignins from 32.93% to 18.15%. Xylan extraction was conducted using 10% natrium hydoroxide (NaOH); this extraction produced xylan of 15.53% (w/w). The xylanase produced by …

Effect Of Mg2+ And Fe2+ Concentrations In Culture Medium On Cgf Formation From Microalgae Chlorella Pyrenoidosa Ink And Analysis Of Amino Acids By Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, Kusmiati, Witry Rahmawati, Ni Wayan Sri Agustini
Makara Journal of Science
Chlorella pyrenoidosa (C. pyrenoidosa) contains Chlorella Growth Factor (CGF), which consists of proteins and polysaccharides. CGF is located inside the nucleus of cells and is beneficial to humans as a food supplement, an immunity booster, and an antioxidant. CGF formation of C. pyrenoidosa is influenced by medium composition. C. pyrenoidosa INK was cultured in a modified basal medium (MBM) with various concentrations of Mg2+ (0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 g/L) and Fe2+ (3.5×10-4 and 5.0×10-4 g/L). The experiments were performed and analyzed under a completely randomized design using a 2-L bottle with three replications. The results showed that MBM with 1.0 …
