Study On Dextran-Modified Sod And Its Enzyme Activity, Li Liang, Zhao Youxi, Ji Yizhi, Gong Ping

Food and Machinery

After the dextran oxidized and activated by NaIO4, two aldehyde groups were obtained by ring-opening reaction. Then, the addition reaction happened between activated dextran and SOD. The modified SOD could keep its enzyme activity effectively, and the stability of the modified SOD in acid, alkali, ethanol, and at high temperature was improved, respectively. It approved that the SOD was modified by dextran successfully through the Infrared spectrum analysis of its structure.

Studies On Antifreezing Of Silver Carp Enzymatic-Hydrolysates In Frozen Surimi, Li Xianghong, Liu Zhongxiang, Deng Haiping, Liu Yongle, Yu Jian, Wang Faxiang, Wang Jianhui

Food and Machinery

The application of silver carp enzymatic-hydrolysates (Protamex hydrolysates, PH and Alcalase hydrolysates, AH) in frozen surimi was studied, with an untreated mince (CTRL) and the effects of sucrose–sorbitol on the frozen surimi as the comparison. Amino acid composition and amino acid nitrogen analysis showed that PH had higher contents of Asp, Lys and free amino acids (P<0.05). Relative molecular weight distribution results indicated that PH had more fractions of high molecular weights. Textural analysis of frozen surimi demonstrated that after 4 weeks frozen, gel strength and hardness of 2% PH and sucrose-sorbitol added group increased. Elasticity of all the samples was slightly lower. And under the frozen condition, all samples’ color was less affected. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) results displayed that protein aggregation of 2% PH and sucrose-sorbitol added groups were less, and the microstructures were less porous and more homogeneous. The surfaces of CTRL and 8% AH added groups showed obvious holes. This study indicates that PH can help to maintain quality of frozen surimi, and provides preliminary evidence for development of a possible new generation cryoprotectans using silver carp hydrolysates.

Rerouting Cellular Electron Flux To Increase The Rate Of Biological Methane Production, Jennie L. Catlett, Alicia M. Ortiz, Nicole R. Buan Jun 2015

Rerouting Cellular Electron Flux To Increase The Rate Of Biological Methane Production, Jennie L. Catlett, Alicia M. Ortiz, Nicole R. Buan

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Methanogens are anaerobic archaea that grow by producing methane, a gas that is both an efficient renewable fuel and a potent greenhouse gas. We observed that overexpression of the cyoplasmic heterodisulfide reductase enzyme HdrABC increased the rate of methane production from methanol by 30% without affecting the growth rate relative to the parent strain. Hdr enzymes are essential in all known methane-producing archaea. They function as the terminal oxidases in the methanogen electron transport system by reducing the coenzyme M (2-mercaptoethane sulfonate) and coenxyme B (7-mercaptoheptaonylthreonine sulfonate) heterodisulfide, CoM-S-S-CoB, to regenerate the thiol-coenzymes for reuse. In Methanosarcina acetivorans, HdrABC expression …

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Throughout the Holocene, Lake Turkana has been subject to drastic changes in lake levels and the subsistence strategies people employ to survive in this hot and arid region. In this paper, we reconstruct the position of the lake during the Holocene within a paleoclimatic context. Atmospheric forcing mechanisms are discussed in order to contextualize the broader landscape changes occurring in eastern Africa over the last 12,000 years. The Holocene is divided into five primary phases according to changes in the strand-plain evolution, paleoclimate, and human subsistence strategies practiced within the basin. Early Holocene fishing settlements occurred adjacent to high and …

The Behavioral Response Of Culex Erraticus To Different Snake Odors, Lindsey E. Wells Jun 2015

The Behavioral Response Of Culex Erraticus To Different Snake Odors, Lindsey E. Wells

Honors College Theses

Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) is an arbovirus that can cause fatal infections in humans and horses. Unfortunately, the transmission mechanisms of this virus are still largely unknown. Culex erraticus displays a strong potential for serving as a vector of EEEV because of its indiscriminate feeding pattern and abundance in areas with the highest prevalence of infection. However, Culex erraticus is incapable of over-wintering the virus, yet EEE recurs each spring. Snakes may play an important role in over-wintering the virus, and certain snake species may be infected more frequently than others. This study was conducted to determine if Culex …

Exxon Shipping Co. V. Baker: Why The Supreme Court Missed The Boat On Punitive Damages, Maria C. Klutinoty Jun 2015

Exxon Shipping Co. V. Baker: Why The Supreme Court Missed The Boat On Punitive Damages, Maria C. Klutinoty

Akron Law Review

This Note will touch upon the numerous constitutional challenges the doctrine of punitive damages has faced, and will discuss noteworthy Supreme Court cases preceding Exxon Shipping Co. v. Baker at length, including BMW of North America, Inc. v. Gore, 5 as well as State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co. v. Campbell. 6 This Note argues against the imposition of a strict one-to-one maximum ratio of punitiveto-compensatory damages. In light of the varying application of Exxon outside of the maritime context, such an imposition defeats the purpose of punitive damages by diluting their potential for deterrence, and it needlessly complicates the …

Some exotic ambrosia beetles are damaging pests in ornamental nurseries. Xylosandrus germanus (Blandford) is the most problematic ambrosia beetle in Ohio nurseries. Movement of X. germanus in nurseries has not been characterized, and knowledge is lacking on whether infestations originate from within nurseries or surrounding habitats. Flight activity of X. germanus was monitored in nurseries and adjacent wooded areas to determine the source of beetles infesting nurseries, and characterize their movement within nurseries. Ethanol-baited bottle traps were positioned within wooded areas adjacent to commercial nurseries and within nurseries at various distances from the nursery woodlot interface. Flight activity of overwintered …

Politics Of Poiesis: Postmodern Polysemy As World, Sarah Fayad Jun 2015

Politics Of Poiesis: Postmodern Polysemy As World, Sarah Fayad

Philosophy ETDs

This paper analyses several, extant, discourses of breakdown in order to ascertain what class and quality of these phenomena might be sufficient for the attainment of greater social-political change: which phenomena might meaningfully challenge contemporary nihilism. To this end, this thesis considers works by Heidegger, Lacan, Kuhn, Dreyfus and Kelly, and Ratcliffe, among others. While the paper attests to the structural similarity of these discourses of breakdown—the rupture of some all-encompassing, totalizing, structure of intelligibility by the ontological excess of possibilities—it also finds some meaningful distinctions between them. In proposing a theory of multiple infinities,' or 'plural nothings,' and thus …

Sacrificial Amphiphiles: Eco-Friendly Chemical Herders As Oil Spill Mitigation Chemicals, Deeksha Gupta, Bivas Sarker, Keith Thadikaran, Vijay John, Charles Maldarelli, George John

Publications and Research

Crude oil spills are a major threat to marine biota and the environment. When light crude oil spills on water, it forms a thin layer that is difficult to clean by any methods of oil spill response. Under these circumstances, a special type of amphiphile termed as “chemical herder” is sprayed onto the water surrounding the spilled oil. The amphiphile forms a monomolecular layer on the water surface, reducing the air–sea surface tension and causing the oil slick to retract into a thick mass that can be burnt in situ. The current best-known chemical herders are chemically stable and nonbiodegradable, …

Environmental Ethics: Theory And Implications For Marketing, Raymond Benton Jr. Jun 2015

Environmental Ethics: Theory And Implications For Marketing, Raymond Benton Jr.

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Many marketers recognize they have obligations toward the non-human world, obligations that are not fully understood. This chapter sheds light on how such marketers can justify their own feelings and persuade others. The chapter begins with the historical rise of environmental consciousness before discussing the two most influential of the Western ethical theories: Kantianism and utilitarianism. It then discusses their shortcomings before moving on to the sentimentalist approach to ethics that comes down to us from David Hume and Adam Smith. A direct line from the sentimentalist approach is drawn to the environmental/ecological ethics of Aldo Leopold. Much is left …

Detecting Executive Function Subtypes In Individuals With Schizophrenia And Healthy Controls, Jessica Pommy Jun 2015

Detecting Executive Function Subtypes In Individuals With Schizophrenia And Healthy Controls, Jessica Pommy

Psychology ETDs

Executive functioning (EF) impairments observed in schizophrenia (SZ) occur prior to onset of psychosis and are predictive of functional outcomes. There is significant variability in the nature and severity of EF deficits, however, and a better understanding of this heterogeneity could provide insight into the neurodevelopmental processes underlying both SZ and EFs. Using an approach similar to Fair et al., 2012, the present analysis examined heterogeneity in EFs and attempted to identify EF subtypes within healthy controls (HC) and individuals with SZ. EFs were assessed using the Trail Making Test, Verbal Fluency test, Tower of London, and Continuous Performance Test. …

Aberrant Development Of Post-Movement Beta Rebound In Young Adults With Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, Andrei Vakhtin Jun 2015

Aberrant Development Of Post-Movement Beta Rebound In Young Adults With Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, Andrei Vakhtin

Psychology ETDs

Prenatal alcohol exposure results in cognitive and physical impairments in children, which are collectively defined as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). The disorders account for the largest proportion of intellectual disabilities in the US. While few functional findings exist today that shed light on the mechanisms responsible for the observed impairments in individuals with FASD, animal models consistently report deleterious effects of early alcohol exposure on GABA-ergic inhibitory pathways. The post-motor beta rebound (PMBR), a transient increase of 15-30 Hz beta power in the motor cortex that follows the termination of movement, has been implicated as a neural signature of …

Predictive Warning System For A Class Of Shared-Control Vehicular Cps Via Dynamic Information Flow Tracking., Rafael Figueroa

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Manned vehicles are maturing into robotics agents under shared control. Vehicle op- erators will be confronted with understanding the expected response from the robotic agent to their actions. I propose a warning system framework to continuously track human inputs, identify possible conflicts and provide contextual warning information to the operator to help avoid accidents. I consider a robotic agent which nominal operation can be encoded using the hybrid automata framework with human inputs. Trajectory prediction methods are used to identify possible conflicts, coded as the avoid set of the system. Using Dynamic Information Flow Tracking (DIFT), human inputs and their …

Low Temperature Growth And Characterization Of Zno Nanostructures, Matthew Erdman

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

A large factor in the decision of using solar systems over readily available fossil fuels and other energy production methods is the upfront cost of solar systems. Therefore a potentially low cost energy harvesting device has been proposed in the form of a hybrid organic-inorganic thermoelectric solar cell. The proposed device uses two different inorganic materials as the top and bottom contacts, and an organic material between the two contacts as a light absorber. The two contacts proposed are Zinc Oxide (ZnO) nanowires and Bismuth Telluride (BiTe) nanowires, and the organic light absorber is a semiconductor porphyrin. To further develop …
