The analysis will also include an overview of recent studies which may have influenced these changes as public awareness of the sealed record controversy has grown.
The Gift Of Life: New Laws, Old Dilemmas, And The Future Of Organ Procurement, Juliana S. Moore
The Gift Of Life: New Laws, Old Dilemmas, And The Future Of Organ Procurement, Juliana S. Moore
Akron Law Review
In Ohio, the recent enactment of the required request law has already helped grieving families to grapple with a loved one's death. Here and across the nation, modifications to organ donation statutes may provide the impetus to change the way a seemingly willing, but apprehensive population views organ donation. But the statutes governing this area are only one component of the fascinating concept of "giving life through death." Because a wealth of material already exists detailing narrow aspects of this area, the purpose of this comment is to present the reader with an informative overview of organ donation as it …

The Edward's Decision: The End Of Creationism In Our Public Schools?, Juliana S. Moore
Akron Law Review
Although many previous cases addressing this issue have gained national attention perhaps no other issue since the famous Scope's "monkey trial" has raised as much controversy as Louisiana's adoption of the "Creationism Act." Now, one thing is certain; when Susie's dad asks her what she learned in school today, she most certainly won't reply that she learned about creationism in science class. The Supreme Court's recent ruling' has insured that the separation between church and state in our public schools will remain. This casenote attempts to examine that ruling, its relationship to similar cases and its impact in the future …

Blood Donation: A Gift Of Life Or A Death Sentence?, Sharon L. Dieringer
Akron Law Review
Anyone who has AIDS is a victim. If AIDS produces a victim then who is the perpetrator? AIDS can be transmitted through intimate sexual contact, by sharing contaminated needles, via infected blood or blood products, and through passage of the virus from infected mothers to their newborns.
This comment will concentrate on transmission through infected blood or blood products, and the blood donor. The discussion will focus on the civil and criminal liabilities of a blood donor with the AIDS virus.
Death Of The Family: What's Become Of The Parents And The Children, Ronald C. Griffin
Death Of The Family: What's Become Of The Parents And The Children, Ronald C. Griffin
Akron Law Review
If something isn't done quickly, America will become the first nation in history in which elderly people enjoy more security than children.
To that end I recommend that family obligations be analyzed in contractual terms. If the law encompasses what courts do with specific conduct, contract law can moderate parental behavior through vehicles such as family counselling. It can sort out family duties and supply legal rationales for resolving family disputes in a constructive way. This article begins with a background discussion - history, literature and insights - then addresses the law and legal analysis.

Ohio Hazardous Material Transportation Act: An Overview, David J. Leland, Steven D. Lesser
Akron Law Review
On June 24, 1988, in Miamisburg, Ohio, Governor Richard F. Celeste signed into law H.B. 428, (known as Ohio's Hazardous Material Transportation Act, hereinafter referred to as the Act) a comprehensive legislative initiative regulating the transportation of hazardous materials. The signing of the Act was the culmination of a two year effort to solve a problem that Ohioians, and the nation as a whole, became aware of in July, 1986 in Miamisburg, Ohio. The new law provides for: a registration system with a graduated fee structure, pre-notification and route assessments for "ultra-hazardous" materials, and a civil forfeiture system with penalties …

Light emitting molecules are an indispensable part of detection and reporting in many fields and are employed in a variety of biomedical applications. Bioluminescent light, or living light, from bioluminescent proteins in particular has many beneficial characteristics, including their lack of a need for an outside excitation source and detection at as low as subattomole levels. Aequorin is a well-characterized bioluminescent photoprotein that has found application in in vitro and in vivo studies. Despite the many advantages of aequorin, its application has been limited by the finite number of canonical amino acids restricting the engineering of aequorin. In order to …
A Nonlocal Spatial Model On Continuous Time And Space, Fan Zhang
A Nonlocal Spatial Model On Continuous Time And Space, Fan Zhang
Open Access Dissertations
In this work we studied a nonlocal spatial model on continuous time and space. Based on Levins’ metapopulation framework, we developed a population model with nonlocal dispersal. The dispersal is modeled by an integro-differential equation. In the first chapter, we studied the well-posedness of a single species model. We established the existence and uniqueness of solution, and proved a version of maxi- mum principal as well as comparison theorem. To study the stability of equilibria, we considered an eigenvalue problem and provided an estimation of the eigenvalue. Then we gave the condition of having a stable positive equilibrium, which biologi- …

Pharmaceutical Science and Research
Gallic acid (GA), a polyphenol, is widely found in numerous fruits and vegetables, particularly in hickory nuts. In the present study, we found that gallic acid, a natural phenolic compound isolated from fruits and vegetables, had a more potent growth inhibitory effect on two ovarian cancer cell lines, OVCAR-3 and A2780/CP70, than the effect on a normal ovarian cell line, IOSE-364. These results demonstrated that GA selectively inhibits the growth of cancer cells. Gene expression was examined by ELISA and western blot analysis, and gene pathways were examined by luciferase assay. It was found that GA inhibited VEGF secretion and …

Homozygosity has long been associated with rare, often devastating, Mendelian disorders, and Darwin was one of the first to recognize that inbreeding reduces evolutionary fitness. However, the effect of the more distant parental relatedness that is common in modern human populations is less well understood. Genomic data now allow us to investigate the effects of homozygosity on traits of public health importance by observing contiguous homozygous segments (runs of homozygosity), which are inferred to be homozygous along their complete length. Given the low levels of genome-wide homozygosity prevalent in most human populations, information is required on very large numbers of …

Identifying The American Incognitum: A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Science, Religion, And American Identity Of The Early Republic, Sarah Mosher
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The science of paleontology developed alongside the emergence of the nation. The paleontological writings of the early relublic, which focused on identifying the mammoth and the mastodon, included more than their scientific contributions. The methods for this thesis include the use of a generative rhetorical analysis on eight paleontological writings published between 1767-1799 by the Royal Society of London, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society. This thesis reveals the presence of eighteenth century religious conflicts with science, the rhetorical techniques of the naturalists, and aspects of the American spirit found in the development of …
A Mathematical Model Of A Control Systems Hypothesis Of N-Methyl-D-Aspartate-Receptor-Mediated Ethanol Dependence And Withdrawal Dynamics, Carlos Gutierrez
A Mathematical Model Of A Control Systems Hypothesis Of N-Methyl-D-Aspartate-Receptor-Mediated Ethanol Dependence And Withdrawal Dynamics, Carlos Gutierrez
Theses and Dissertations
The biochemical effects of ethanol on the human brain are manifested through many neurological pathways. Chronic exposure to the depressant has been shown to result in physical dependence. Subsequent cessation results in withdrawal symptoms such as seizures and both short- and long-term changes in neurological activity. One of the primary conduits implicated in the pathways of ethanol dependence and withdrawal is the detection of glutamate via N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors (NMDARs). Ethanol molecules inhibit these receptors, and consequent NMDA-induced glutamatergic changes can result in dependence on ethanol in order to sustain normal brain function. This study considers the relocation control of …

Assessing Feeding Preferences And Spatial Patterns Of Lagodon Rhomboides Linnaeus, Alexandria V. Lamle
Assessing Feeding Preferences And Spatial Patterns Of Lagodon Rhomboides Linnaeus, Alexandria V. Lamle
Master of Science in Integrative Biology Theses
Mesograzers have the ability to greatly mitigate the effects of eutrophication in seagrass systems. In this study we look at pinfish (Lagodon rhomboides Linnaeus) as a potential epiphytic grazer and assess feeding preferences during a transitional stage in the ontogenetic diet shift exhibited by these fish. Since pinfish are abundant in seagrass meadows in the northern Gulf of Mexico, their dietary preferences have the potential to greatly impact seagrasses in this system. Twenty-four hour feeding trials were conducted to determine pinfish preference between seagrass (Thalassia testudinum) and algal epiphytes. St. Joseph Bay, FL was also surveyed to …
Behavioral Ethics, Behavioral Compliance, Donald C. Langevoort
Behavioral Ethics, Behavioral Compliance, Donald C. Langevoort
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
The design of an effective legal compliance system for an organization fearing prosecution for white-collar crime or regulatory violations requires skill at predicting human behavior. It is entirely plausible to use the economist’s simplifying assumptions of rational choice and pecuniary self-interest in making these predictions. But the realism of these assumptions has been under attack for decades now, suggesting that we should at least consider more nuanced behavioral possibilities when designing and implementing compliance programs. The label “behavioral compliance” can be attached to the design and management of compliance that draws from this wider range of behavioral predictions about individual …

Implementing The Ayers Case Settlement: A Multiple Case Study Of Three Historically Black Institutions In Mississippi, Lemondra V. Hamilton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The State of Mississippi operated a dual system of higher education for White and Black citizens. The inequitable funding of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) became the central issue in the Ayers lawsuit. The State of Mississippi agreed to pay $503 million for endowments and programs at the three public four-year HBCUs. The purpose of this multiple case study was to understand the impact of the Ayers case on state-supported HBCUs in Mississippi from a Critical Race Theory perspective. The research questions that guided this study: How has the history of higher education in Mississippi affected the way HBCUs …

Quantitative Study Of Nano To Submicron Scales Intracellular Structural Disorder Using Electron And Confocal Microscopies: Application To Cancer Detection, Hemendra Ghimire
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Cancer is one of the leading causes of death with over a million people being diagnosed every year. Many cancers eventually result in death because they go undetected in their early stages when they can be cured. The conventional techniques used for cancer diagnostics exhibit limitations in detecting early stage cancer, which has nano-scale structural changes. On the other hand, alcoholism is one of the biggest cause of health problems. This study examines the effect of alcohol in early stage carcinogenesis in the colon and healthy hippocampal cells of mice models by quantifying the structural changes in their nuclei via …

Steps Towards Deciphering The Post-Polyketide Synthase Tailoring Steps In The Phoslactomycin Biosynthesis Pathway, Patience Marimo
Dissertations and Theses
Phoslactomycins (PLMs) are a group of natural products belonging to a polyketides class. These polyketides are synthesized by sequential reaction catalyzed by a collection of enzymes activities called polyketide synthases. A polyketide is a large class of diverse compounds that are characterized by more than two carbonyl groups connected by single intervening carbon atoms. In other words, a polyketide is a polymer whose monomer is a ketide. The PLMs are also known as phosphazomycins or phospholines. These compounds were isolated based on antifungal and antitumor activities. This array of promising biological activities has stimulated research into the field of PLMs …

Part II of this Comment will examine the history of human experimentation and how the current regime of experimenting developed then explore the gap between experimentation approved by an Institutional Review Board (“IRB”) and FDA oversight. Part III will consider the competing interests of individual patient protection and medical innovation in general and whether informed consent appropriately balances those interests. Part IV will evaluate the inadequacies of current reliance on informed consent by using two case studies, both involving novel microbial procedures, and discuss how codification of the reasonable innovation rule would address those inadequacies. Ultimately, this Comment will argue …
"Mama's Baby, Papa's Maybe": Disestablishment Of Paternity, Vanessa S. Browne-Barbour
"Mama's Baby, Papa's Maybe": Disestablishment Of Paternity, Vanessa S. Browne-Barbour
Akron Law Review
Part II of this Article provides a general historical overview of paternity rules. Part III summarizes the laws addressing paternity and its disestablishment in the United States and the European Union. It discusses related cases from the high courts of both jurisdictions, which highlight the broad range of issues, interests, and consequences associated with issues of paternity. Part IV considers the adverse effects of disestablishment of paternity on a child. It recommends nationally mandated genetic testing at birth or soon thereafter. This would eliminate altogether the need for paternity disestablishment procedures, thereby avoiding their harmful effects. Part V acknowledges that …

Stromatolite Provinces Of Hamelin Pool, Western Australia, Erica Parke Suosaari
Open Access Dissertations
Hamelin Pool, Shark Bay, Western Australia, is home to the most extensive living stromatolite system in the world, providing an analog for Precambrian fossils that dominated the planet for over 80% of Earth’s history. Due to the remote location and restricted access of Hamelin Pool, which is a marine reserve within a World Heritage area, previous geospatial, microstructural and environmental studies in this area are limited in scope. Existing ground truth data comes mainly from the two iconic stromatolite locations located on the western margin (Flagpole Landing and Carbla Point). Additionally, many studies are out of date with current technology …
