Structure Characterization Of Cellulose Nanofibers/Microfibrils, Ying Su
Structure Characterization Of Cellulose Nanofibers/Microfibrils, Ying Su
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Cellulose nascent crystals or cellulose microfibrils, extracted from biomass through TEMPO-mediated oxidation, are low cost, biocompatible and high performance materials that have found wide applications in various fields, including water purification, polymer nanocomposites, biosensors, and tissue engineering. However, several fundamental aspects of the structure characterization of these cellulose nascent crystals and microfibrils have still been ambiguous. The current study uses synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) to characterize the structure of cellulose nanofibers (and their aggregates) and corresponding dispersed microfibrils from various sources (e.g. wood, bamboo, cotton, jute, etc.) in aqueous suspensions. It was revealed that typical cellulose nanofibers extracted from …
Anti-Backbiting In Alternating Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization And Applications Of Alternating Copolymers, Li Tan
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Linear alternating copolymers have potential use as tools in the biochemical and material sciences. Cyclobutene-1-carboxylate esters and cyclohexene participate in an alternating ring-opening metathesis polymerization (AROMP) [Song, A.; Parker, K. A.; Sampson, N. S. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2009, 131, 3444]. However, the molecular weight homogeneity of the copolymers resulting from the 1-cyclobutene ester/cyclohexene pair is limited by " cross metathesis" reactions that lead to undesired polymer dispersities and cyclic polymers. Therefore, strategies to inhibit intramolecular cross metathesis and to obtain linear alternating copolymers were undertaken. We set out to improve the AROMP process by screening reaction conditions to inhibit …
Thin-Film Nanofibrous Composite Membranes By Interfacial Polymerization For Water Purification, Xiao Wang
Thin-Film Nanofibrous Composite Membranes By Interfacial Polymerization For Water Purification, Xiao Wang
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
A thin-film nanofibrous composite (TFNC) membrane system for nanofiltration (NF) with substrates entirely fabricated by fibers was prepared. Water-channel structure was formed at the interface between the polymer barrier layer and the ultrafine cellulose nanofibers (CNs) in the supporting layer, demonstrating the advantages of using a CN substrate over other conventional ones. Both manual coating and slot-die coating were applied for membrane preparations. The resulting membrane performance showed that the slot-die coating method could produce better performance membranes than the manual coating method. With the optimized formulations and coating conditions, TFNC NF membranes coated by the slot-die method had a …
Abnormal Emotional Reactivity And Reward Sensitivity In Major Depressive Disorder: Evidence From Event-Related Potentials, Daniel Justin Foti
Abnormal Emotional Reactivity And Reward Sensitivity In Major Depressive Disorder: Evidence From Event-Related Potentials, Daniel Justin Foti
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with abnormal neural activity elicited by affective stimuli and reward, yet results have been inconsistent across studies and have at times been contradictory. Discrepancies may be due in part to the wide range of laboratory paradigms and stimuli that have been used. The current study examined this issue by recording event-related potentials across a battery of four tasks within a single MDD sample. First, using two emotional reactivity tasks, the moderating effect of the personal relevance of stimuli was examined; normative and idiographic affective stimuli were contrasted. Second, using two environmental feedback tasks, monetary …
Morphology And Function Of The Ophidian Vertebral Column: Implications For The Paleobiology Of Fossil Snakes, Jacob Mccartney
Morphology And Function Of The Ophidian Vertebral Column: Implications For The Paleobiology Of Fossil Snakes, Jacob Mccartney
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Snakes are a speciose, ecologically diverse clade with an evolutionary history spanning the past 100 million years. This diversity makes them an excellent group for study, particularly given their importance in extant faunas. However, the fossil record of snakes is primarily composed of isolated vertebrae, owing to the great number of these elements and loosely articulated nature of the skull. This means that any study of the paleobiology of extinct snakes must rest primarily on vertebrae. The purpose of this dissertation is to add to the current knowledge of snake vertebral ecomorphology, and to begin to extend that understanding to …

My work stems from my own neuroses, obsessions, and insecurities, which reflect the stark and disturbing truths of who I am. The question does not lie in what I see in the mirror, but rather in what society dictates should be there. Using animals to illustrate these echoes, I attempt to rattle the foundations of the normative. The animals become a personification of my confrontations with " girl world policing." Commenting on the impacts of these experiences and their effects on my past, current, and future relationships, I hope to alleviate the internal struggle of finding myself. | 40 pages

The objective of this thesis is to examine the ontology of my artwork and contextualize it within the framework of trauma, horror and feminism. My artwork focuses on the effects of internalized violence on cognitive and bodily processes, which manifest as haunting and repetition. In my artistic production, I use the unconscious methodologically, and I rely on pattern emergence and analysis to refine my works conceptually. In this thesis: I relate visual and conceptual aspects of my MFA Thesis Exhibition artworks to the traits of trauma most relevant to my work, namely haunting and repetition; I outline the patterns that …
"Just Look At Her!": Sporting Bodies As Athletic Resistance And The Limits Of Sport Norms In The Case Of Caster Semenya, Shane Miller
"Just Look At Her!": Sporting Bodies As Athletic Resistance And The Limits Of Sport Norms In The Case Of Caster Semenya, Shane Miller
Strategic Communication Studies Faculty Publications
Using the American sport media’s treatment of South African runner Caster Semenya, this article explores how in the course of defending Caster Semenya the American sport media presented a rigorous challenge to traditional conceptions of sex and gender. Yet these rhetorical efforts to deconstruct sex and gender binaries were undermined by the specific ways in which Semenya’s dual performances—athletic and gender—were visually depicted. A close reading and analysis of US sports media coverage of Caster Semenya provide an opportunity to explore the ways in which the norms of sport may foster progressive treatment of athletes whose genders do not fit …

Hippocalcin Response To Calcium: Do Conserved Tryptophans – W30 Or W103 – Matter?, Sunkesula K. Sagar
Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Theses and Dissertations
Changes in intracellular calcium levels play a very important role in cell signaling, in turn, affecting neuronal functions such as memory, learning and cell death. A class of proteins called Neuronal Calcium Sensor (NCS) proteins serves to modulate the functioning of the neuronal cells in response to changes in calcium levels, and prevent neuronal apoptosis. Structurally, all NCS proteins have 4 calcium-binding EF hand motifs, although EF1 does not bind to calcium in many members. All NCS proteins have an acyl modification at the N- terminus – where a myristoyl group is added post-translationally. Hippocalcin (HPCA) is an NCS protein, …
Conformational Dynamics Of Dnaa Protein Of Bacillus Anthracis In The Initiation Of Dna Replication: A Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer Study, Meera J. Patel
Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Theses and Dissertations
A precursor of the origin recognition complex proteins in eukaryotes, the DnaA protein, a single-subunit protein found in all prokaryotes, p1ays a significant role in the initiation of DNA replication. The DnaA protein in Gram-negative Escherichia coli (DnaAEC) identifies, binds and activates specific DNA sequences at the origin of replication, oriC, initiating the duplication of the prokaryotic genome. Using DnaAEC as a guide, we selected the full-length form of DnaA from Gram-positive Bacillus anthracis (DnaABA) as our model for studying. We have cloned, mutated, expressed and purified large quantities of DnaABA protein due to …

A Parallel Algorithm For Compression Of Big Next-Generation Sequencing Datasets, Sandino N. Vargas Perez, Fahad Saeed
Parallel Computing and Data Science Lab Technical Reports
With the advent of high-throughput next-generation sequencing (NGS) techniques, the amount of data being generated represents challenges including storage, analysis and transport of huge datasets. One solution to storage and transmission of data is compression using specialized compression algorithms. However, these specialized algorithms suffer from poor scalability with increasing size of the datasets and best available solutions can take hours to compress gigabytes of data. In this paper we introduce paraDSRC, a parallel implementation of DSRC algorithm using a message passing model that presents reduction of the compression time complexity by a factor of O(1/p ). Our experimental results show …

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications
Chlorophyll synthase catalyzes the final step in chlorophyll biosynthesis: the esterification of chlorophyllide with either geranylgeranyl diphosphate or phytyl diphosphate (PDP). Recent studies have pointed to the involvement of chlorophyll-linked reduction of geranylgeranyl by geranylgeranyl reductase as a major pathway for the synthesis of the PDP precursor of tocopherols. This indirect pathway of PDP synthesis suggests a key role of chlorophyll synthase in tocopherol production to generate the geranylgeranyl-chlorophyll substrate for geranylgeranyl reductase. In this study, contributions of chlorophyll synthase to tocopherol formation in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) were explored by disrupting and altering expression of the corresponding gene …

Documentation of the interacting effects of river regulation and climate on riparian vegetation has typically been limited to small segments of rivers or focused on individual plant species. We examine spatiotemporal variability in riparian vegetation for the Colorado River in Grand Canyon relative to river regulation and climate, over the five decades since completion of the upstream Glen Canyon Dam in 1963. Long-term changes along this highly modified, large segment of the river provide insights for management of similar riparian ecosystems around the world. We analyze vegetation extent based on maps and imagery from eight dates between 1965 and 2009, …

Conservation of species requires accurate population estimates. We used genetic markers from feces to determine bighorn sheep abundance for a herd that was hypothesized to be declining and in need of population status monitoring. We sampled from a small but accessible portion of the population's range where animals natural congregate at a natural mineral lick to test whether we could accurately estimate population size by sampling from an area where animals concentrate. We used mark-recapture analysis to derive population estimates, and compared estimates from this smaller spatial sampling to estimates from sampling of the entire bighorn sheep range. We found …

We evaluated markers of artemisinin resistance in Plasmodium falciparum isolated in Kampala in 2014. By standard in vitro assays, all isolates were highly sensitive to dihydroartemisinin (DHA). By the ring-stage survival assay, after a 6-h DHA pulse, parasitemia was undetectable in 40 of 43 cultures at 72 h. Two of 53 isolates had nonsynonymous K13-propeller gene polymorphisms but did not have the mutations associated with resistance in Asia. Thus, we did not see evidence for artemisinin resistance in Uganda.

Bumblebees and honeybees have been the subjects of a great deal of recent research in animal cognition. Many of the major topics in cognition, including memory, attention, concept learning, numerosity, spatial cognition, timing, social learning, and metacognition have been examined in bumblebees, honeybees, or both. Although bumblebees and honeybees are very closely related, they also differ in important ways, including social organization, development, and foraging behaviour. We examine whether differences between bumblebees and honeybees in cognitive processes are related to differences in their natural history and behaviour. There are differences in some cognitive traits, such as serial reversal learning and …

Solute carrier (SLC) transporters-a family of more than 300 membrane-bound proteins that facilitate the transport of a wide array of substrates across biological membranes-have important roles in physiological processes ranging from the cellular uptake of nutrients to the absorption of drugs and other xenobiotics. Several classes of marketed drugs target well-known SLC transporters, such as neurotransmitter transporters, and human genetic studies have provided powerful insight into the roles of more-recently characterized SLC transporters in both rare and common diseases, indicating a wealth of new therapeutic opportunities. This Review summarizes knowledge on the roles of SLC transporters in human disease, describes …

The present study juxtaposes scientific rationality with polyphonic rationality in respect to societal development. This is done to illuminate how scientific rationality provides a narrow and truncated view of development. In order to explicate the exclusion of polyphonic rationalities/knowledges in favor of scientific rationality, several development scholarships are examined along with an episode of developmental scheme and two episodes of development programs. This is done to expound (note: ‘→’ = influences) how scientific rationality → scholarships → organizational/institutional schemes, such as the MDGs → actual applications of development schemes, such as transmigration and compulsory villagization. The present inquest, …
