Biology Faculty Research
Endometrial cancer is the most common female reproductive cancer in the United States and is associated with deregulated tight junction protein expression. Given the highly estrogen-responsive nature of this tissue, we investigated the effects of estrogen and its agonist, 4-OH TAM, on the expression and subcellular localization of the tight junction protein claudin-4 (CLDN-4), in HEC-1A endometrial cancer cells. In untreated HEC-1A cells, we observed dramatic overexpression of claudin-4 protein. In addition, differential detergent extraction analysis indicated that claudin-4 was localized primarily in the membrane but also found in the cytosolic, nuclear and cytoskeletal fractions. Upon exposure of HEC-1A to …

Aspen and climate change: Recent mortality portends bad news
William R. L. Anderegg
I grew up camping, fishing, and hunting in the aspen forests of southwestern Colorado. When I returned to these forests for my Ph.D. research, however, I saw that broad regions of the forests I remembered were dying, white-bark skeletons standing still against the blue mountain sky. I remember staring in shock at these forests and thinking, “What is going on here? What does this mean for the future of aspen?”
The Making Of A Generalist: Mining The Transcriptome To Characterize Host-Use Evolution In The Aphid Uroleucon Ambrosiae., Aman Gill
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The evolution of host use--the preference and ability to utilize plant species--has long occupied a central role in theories on how and why insects are among the most diverse lineages on earth. Yet the genomic basis of host-range evolution remains poorly understood, partly because most studies concern species-level comparisons, where reproductive isolation is already complete, obscuring the evolutionary changes that may have initiated divergence. To advance our understanding of host-range evolution at the instraspecific, genomic level, I generate and investigate genomic data for populations of the aphid Uroleucon ambrosiae (Ua) that diverge in host use traits--eastern North American populations specialize …

The Loss Of Ng2+ Glia-Mediated Cns Homeostasis In The Pathophysiology Of Depression, Fikri Birey
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a leading cause of disease burden in the world. Improved understanding and treatment of MDD and related mood and stress disorders such as bipolar disorder (BD), anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are critical public health priorities. Contemporary theories of the neurological basis of MDD place emphasis on the intracellular and structural changes in neurons, but more recent animal models and postmortem human studies have correlated glial cell loss with MDD development. The glial cell-types involved, the mechanisms underlying the loss, and whether it is causal in MDD development are unknown. Glial cells expressing the …

The Role Of Microrna In Trait And State Anxiety, Magdalena Jurkiewicz
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
In humans and other animals, the amygdala has been shown to play a role in implicit emotional learning and memory, emotional modulation of memory, emotional influences on attention and perception, emotion and social behavior. Amygdala function has also been linked to personality traits and neuropsychiatric conditions, including anxiety disorders. The aim of the present study was to investigate the biological underpinnings of trait anxiety through a study of microRNA-mediated gene regulation, which was accomplished by global profiling of post-mortem human brain tissue from the lateral nucleus of the amygdala (LA). Gene expression in postmortem LA tissue from donors with known …

(excerpt) An ultrasound video of an unborn child sucking its thumb makes a case against abortion that reason hardly need supplement. But a zygote photographed just after an in vitro conception is not so easily recognizable as a human being or person. Pro-lifers often assume that this difficulty has been overcome by modern science. Since the 1820s, when evidence of ovular fertilization first became known, it has been clear that the life of a human being runs from conception to death.

Prevalence Of Inadequate Hydration Levels In Aquatic Safety Personnel: A Pilot Study, William D. Ramos, Austin Robert Anderson, Allison Lee Fletcher
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Lifeguards play an important role in the security and safety of those they are hired to protect. A performance issue may arise if they succumb to circumstances that cause them to become physically or psychologically compromised. Dehydration is one issue that can result in decreased levels of workplace performance and pose personal health risks. Certified lifeguards 15 years old and older were tested for urine specific gravity (USG) to determine their place within the dehydration spectrum. Participants (N = 55) were recruited from seven test sites offering a variety of designs (indoor/outdoor, traditional/waterpark) and classifications (private, semipublic, public). Testing involved …

Taproot In & Outside The Classroom, Coalition For Education In The Outdoors
Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education
As demonstrated in this issue of Taproot, human well-being is inextricably intertwined with the insect and arachnid (mites, scorpions, spiders and ticks) life of this planet. Perhaps environmental and outdoor educators too often focus lessons on (difficult to actually see in the wild) mega fauna while insect and arachnid creatures can be easily caught and observed (proper precautions taken of course).
We therefore offer the following (Insect Collecting 101) introduction courtesy of the University of Florida Department of Entomology. It can be accessed at: http://entnemdept.ufl.edu/bug_club/ent-events/collecting101.shtml#where

What Every Primary Care Clinician Should Know About The Diagnosis Of Lyme Disease, Elizabeth Maloney
Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education
A great deal of misunderstanding, even in the medical profession, exists concerning Lyme disease. Dr. Maloney’s article provides an in-depth discussion of the illness. It was written with physicians in mind but is not so heavily laden with medical terminology that the layperson will fail to understand its contents.

Tradeoffs Of Warm Adaptation In Aquatic Ectotherms: Live Fast, Die Young?, A. P. Porreca, E. Martinez, R. E. Colombo, Michael A. Menze
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
In the face of a changing climate, questions regarding sub-lethal effects of elevated habitat temperature on the physiology of ectotherms remain unanswered. In particular, long-term responses of ectotherms to the warming trend in tropical regions are unknown and significantly understudied due primarily to the difficulties in specimen and community traceability. In freshwater lakes employed as cooling reservoirs for power plants, increased physiological stress from high water temperature can lead to an increase in mortality, reduce growth, and potentially alter the community structure of fishes. Throughout this study, we employ this highly tractable system to assess how elevated thermal regimes can …

Variation In Brain Morphology Of Intertidal Gobies: A Comparison Of Methodologies Used To Quantitatively Assess Brain Volumes In Fish, Gemma E. White, Culum Brown
Veterinary Science and Medicine Collection
When correlating brain size and structure with behavioural and environmental characteristics, a range of techniques can be utilised. This study used gobiid fishes to quantitatively compare brain volumes obtained via three different methods; these included the commonly used techniques of histology and approximating brain volume to an idealised ellipsoid, and the recently established technique of X-ray micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). It was found that all three methods differed significantly from one another in their volume estimates for most brain lobes. The ellipsoid method was prone to over- or under-estimation of lobe size, histology caused shrinkage in the telencephalon, and although micro-CT …

Probing The Past 30-Year Phenology Trend Of Us Deciduous Forests, X. Yue, N. Unger, Xiaoyang Zhang, C.S. Vogel
GSCE Faculty Publications
Phenology is experiencing dramatic changes over deciduous forests in the USA. Estimates of trends in phenology on the continental scale are uncertain, however, with studies failing to agree on both the magnitude and spatial distribution of trends in spring and autumn. This is due to the sparsity of in situ records, uncertainties associated with remote sensing data, and the regional focus of many studies. It has been suggested that reported trends are a result of recent temperature changes, though multiple processes are thought to be involved and the nature of the temperature forcing remains unknown. To date, no study has …
