English Language Proficiency, Academic Confidence, And Academic Success: A Case Study Of First-Year Female Students At An Ethiopian University, Jennifer Sue Miller
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
Despite increased access to higher education for female students in Ethiopia, gender inequality in universities persists. The present study investigates a group of sixty first-year female students in the natural science fields who were attending an Ethiopian university and who voluntarily participated in an English mentoring pilot program. This research uses a mixed methods approach with qualitative data from participants’ writing samples and quantitative data from grade point averages, English language proficiency (ELP) levels from the British Council’s International Language Assessment (ILA) placement exam, and academic confidence ratings from the Academic Behavioral Confidence (ABC) survey. Results show differences between groups …

Perceived Father Roles Of Married African American Men: A Phenomenological Study, Felicia Murray, Shann Hwa Hwang
Perceived Father Roles Of Married African American Men: A Phenomenological Study, Felicia Murray, Shann Hwa Hwang
The Qualitative Report
Data is limited regarding the cultural and racial variations of fatherhood. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand the lived experiences of eight married African American fathers focusing on their perceptions of father roles and responsible fathering behaviors. Specifically, the study highlighted two critical issues: (1) men’s perceptions about their roles as fathers; and (2) how historical characterizations of father roles can serve as a mechanism for understanding males’ current perceptions. The researchers identified seven role themes: provider, role model/sex role model, disciplinarian, leader, supporter, teacher/spiritual teacher, and guide. Implications for family science practitioners and researchers as well …
Interplay Of Cofilin And Capping Proteins In Branched Actin Networks And Integration Of Linear And Branched Nucleation In Actin Comets, Sofya Borinskaya
Interplay Of Cofilin And Capping Proteins In Branched Actin Networks And Integration Of Linear And Branched Nucleation In Actin Comets, Sofya Borinskaya
Doctoral Dissertations
Rearrangements of the actin cytoskeleton underlie many physiological processes. I investigated actin dynamics in broad thin protrusions (lamellipodia) at the front of migrating cells, and in locally induced dynamic actin structures (comet tails).
Cofilin is an actin regulatory protein that induces either polymerization or depolymerization in live cells. Through biochemical modeling in Virtual Cell software I examined the function of cofilin in a dynamic branched network at the tip of a lamellipodium. Cofilin and capping protein play synergistic roles in regulating branched actin polymerization. The model predicts that cofilin promotes actin disassembly when capping concentration is low and promotes actin …

Culturally Responsive Math Curriculum: First Grade Dual Language Immersion Addition Unit, Alia R. Morales Towns
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
The results of state educational testing show achievement gaps between students of color and white students in many states. This gap is also found in the testing data for school districts that implement dual language immersion using English and Spanish. Research demonstrates that curricula that incorporate theories and practices related to equity, social justice and culturally and linguistically responsive instruction can support efforts to close the gap in achievement. The purpose of this project was to create a standards-based, culturally and linguistically responsive mathematics unit of study, with a focus on social justice, to begin to close the racial achievement …
Teaching Health Literacy To Underrepresented Adolescents: A Curriculum For High School Advisory Teachers, Anya Dmytrenko
Teaching Health Literacy To Underrepresented Adolescents: A Curriculum For High School Advisory Teachers, Anya Dmytrenko
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
This curriculum-based capstone provides high school teachers with a curriculum guide for teaching health literacy to underrepresented adolescents. The secondary knowledge research examines the effectiveness of advisory programs and current trends in health literacy, and the healthcare needs of diverse youth in urban populations. Earlier public health efforts, such as establishment of school nurses and development of school-based health clinics, are also introduced. The UbD framework and principles (Wiggins & McTighe, 2005) used to design these curricula are discussed in detail. Unit and lesson plans on various topics related to health literacy were developed with appropriate assessment tools. Vital components …

Anthropogenic activities have significantly altered atmospheric chemistry and changed the global mobility of key macronutrients. Here we show that contemporary global patterns in nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) emissions drive large hemispheric variation in precipitation chemistry. These global patterns of nutrient emission and deposition (N:P) are in turn closely reflected in the water chemistry of naturally oligotrophic lakes (r2 = 0.81, p < 0.0001). Observed increases in anthropogenic N deposition play a role in nutrient concentrations (r2 = 0.20, p < 0.05); however, atmospheric deposition of P appears to be major contributor to this pattern (r2 = 0.65, p < 0.0001). Atmospheric simulations indicate a global increase in P deposition by 1.4 times the preindustrial rate largely due to increased dust and biomass burning emissions. Although changes in the mass flux of global P deposition are smaller than for N, the impacts on primary productivity may be greater because, on average, one unit of increased P deposition has 16 times the influence of one unit of N deposition. These stoichiometric considerations, combined with the evidence presented here, suggest that increases in P deposition may be a major driver of alpine Lake trophic status, particularly in the Southern Hemisphere. These results underscore the need for the broader scientific community to consider the impact of atmospheric phosphorus deposition on the water quality of naturally oligotrophic lakes.

Rotavirus (RV) infections cause severe diarrhea in infants and young children worldwide. Vaccines are available but cost prohibitive for many countries and only reduce severe symptoms. Vaccinated infants continue to shed infectious particles, and studies show decreased efficacy of the RV vaccines in tropical and subtropical countries where they are needed most. Continuing surveillance for new RV strains, assessment of vaccine efficacy, and development of cost effective antiviral drugs remain an important aspect of RV studies. This study was to determine the efficacy of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory stilbenoids to inhibit RV replication. Peanut (A. hypogaea) hairy root cultures were induced …

Role Of Astrocytes In Ischemic Preconditioning-Induced Neuroprotection, Srinivasan Narayanan
Open Access Dissertations
Cerebral ischemia, most notably in the form of stroke, is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality resulting in long-term disability in the United States (U.S.). Investigating therapies that could be preemptively administered to individuals with a risk factor for stroke could improve prognosis following this devastating condition. One such prophylactic therapy could be represented by ischemic preconditioning (IPC). IPC is the intrinsic neuroprotective response from a brief sub-lethal ischemic event which increases the tolerance towards a future lethal ischemic event. However, previous preconditioning studies in the brain have been studied mainly from the perspective of neurons; as a result, …

Characterization And Regulation Of Steroid Sulfatase In The Human Mg-63 Pre-Osteoblastic Cell Line, Natasha Dias
Characterization And Regulation Of Steroid Sulfatase In The Human Mg-63 Pre-Osteoblastic Cell Line, Natasha Dias
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The importance of estrogen in bone regulation is exemplified by the reduction in bone density at the onset of menopause. Post-menopausal women have low levels of estrogens, but high levels of inactive sulfated steroids. These can be converted to active steroids by steroid sulfatase (STS), which is a microsomal enzyme found in many tissues. STS desulfates common steroids such as dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate and estrone sulfate, the products of which can serve as precursors for active estrogens. We sought to characterize the activity and expression of STS in human bone cells with the idea that increasing STS expression in bone could …
Crystal Structure, Electronic Structure, And Physicochemical Characterization Of I2-Ii-Iv-Vi4 And I4-Ii-Iv2-Vi7 Diamond-Like Semiconductors Prepared By High-Temperature Solid-State Synthesis, Charles Sinagra
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Diamond-like semiconductors are compounds that possess bandgaps in the visible to near-infrared and crystallize in structures derived from that of cubic or hexagonal diamond. The compositions of quaternary DLSs are predictable and flexible, which allows for the tuning of physicochemical properties for technological applications. Chapter 1 provides an overview of DLSs and potential applications for which they are useful. In this work, diamond-like semiconductors (DLSs) of the family I2-II-IV-VI4, namely, Cu2ZnGeSe4 and Cu2MnGeSe4, were prepared via high-temperature solid-state synthesis Investigations to prepare Cu2ZnGeSe4, led to the serendipitous discovery of a new compound, Cu4ZnGe2Se7. To better understand the relationships between these …

Development Of A Modified Calcium-Based Composite Ceramic Bone Graft Material, Gavin Buckholtz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Composites consisting of both calcium aluminum oxide and hydroxyapatite were tested for their applicability as bone replacement scaffolds. Implanted bone scaffolds may fail due to a variety of reasons, including mechanical and biological failure. Mechanical failure may occur as a result of dissimilar properties between the surrounding healthy bone and the scaffold. Biological failure can occur due to integration problems at the interface of the scaffold and the natural bone, or as a result of implant associated infections as a result of bacterial attachment and biofilm formation. Calcium aluminum oxide:hydroxyapatite composites were developed that address these three modes of implant …

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications
Molecular examples of mixed-valence copper complexes through chemical oxidation are rare but invoked in the mechanism of substrate activation, especially oxygen, in copper-containing enzymes. To examine the cooperative chemistry between two metals in close proximity to each other we began studying the reactivity of a dinuclear Cu(I) amidinate complex. The reaction of [(2,6-Me2C6H3N)2C(H)]2Cu2, 1, with I2 in tetrahydrofuran (THF), CH3CN, and toluene affords three new mixed-valence copper complexes [(2,6-Me2C6H3N)2C(H)]2Cu2(μ2-I3)(THF)2, 2, [(2,6-Me2C6H3N)2C(H)]2Cu2(μ2-I) (NCMe)2, 3, and [(2,6-Me2C6H3N)2C(H)]3Cu3(μ3-I)2, 4, respectively. The first two compounds were characterized by UV-vis and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopies, and their molecular structure was determined by X-ray crystallography. Both …

A Survey Of Mathematical Models Of Dengue Fever, James P. Braselton, Iurii Bakach
Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications
In this paper, we compare and contrast five models of dengue fever, a serious illness that affects tropical and subtropical areas around the world. We evaluate each model using different scenarios and identify the strengths and weakness of each of the models. The goal of our analysis is to indicate the strengths and weaknesses of current mathematical models of dengue fever that should assist future researchers in forming models that accurately measure the variables they are studying that affect the spread and progression of the disease.

Wrongful Death: Fetal Rights - Cause Of Action Grated For Fetal Deaths Under Wrongful Death Statute; Eich V. Town Of Gulf Shores, Mary Ann Kovach
Akron Law Review
A WRONGFUL DEATH ACTION, Eich v. Town of Gulf Shores, was decided as a result of an automobile accident that occurred on March 2, 1974, near the small Alabama town of Gulf Shores. Although the facts of the incident were not fully recounted, it appears that the plaintiff, who was eight and one-half months pregnant at the time, was struck by a negligently operated city police car and severely injured. Although plaintiff recovered from her injuries, the child did not and was stillborn. Mrs. Eich then sued, seeking damages for the death of the unborn child and basing her action …

Marriage Rights; Homosexuals And Transsexuals; B. V. B.,, William D. Lentz
Akron Law Review
WHAT IS A MARRIAGE? Although there are several definitions, they all contain one common element: the union of one man and one woman. However, if a particular state had no statute which specifically required that marriage be between a man and a woman would the courts uphold a marriage between members of the same sex? The New York Supreme Court, in B. v. B., answered that question in the negative. In that case the wife brought an action for annulment on the ground that her husband was a female, and the husband attempted to amend his answer and counterclaim for …

Obtaining high-resolution information from a complex network while maintaining its natural context is a key challenge in biology. This is especially true of molecular networks, largely governed by protein-protein interactions, which underlie life’s dynamic processes. Despite the invaluable information they have provided, genetic interaction screens and biochemical assays lack either evidence of direct protein association or an intact endogenous environment, respectively. As a result, the static interaction maps we currently possess do not reveal when and where interactions take place within a living system, limiting our ability to recreate or control processes at the cellular level. Using optically transparent Drosophila …

The Stress Of Adolescence: The Impact Of Self-Perceived Body Development On Adult Health, Isabelle Christine Beulaygue
Open Access Dissertations
Extant research indicates that early and mid adolescence are times of notable pubertal changes, which are accompanied by rapid physical, cognitive, and social transitions. For young women, these changes are particularly stressful. The female body changes extensively and is subject to societal ideals of beauty, thinness, and objectification. The current dissertation offers a novel bio-psycho-social perspective to the study of adolescent self-perceived development. Utilizing data from Waves, I III, and IV of Add Health, I constructed a composite index of self-perceived body development during adolescence and examined its impact on four health outcomes. After running several regression models, and testing …
