Comparisons Of Lygus Lineolaris Populations From The Mississippi Delta And Hills Agricultural Regions, Daniel Edward Fleming Aug 2015

Comparisons Of Lygus Lineolaris Populations From The Mississippi Delta And Hills Agricultural Regions, Daniel Edward Fleming

Theses and Dissertations

Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois) is a pest of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) in Mississippi, particularly in the Delta region of the state. It is estimated that 3.1old more insecticide applications are needed to control this pest and it costs producers 3.6old more in the Delta region than in the Hills region. These differences have been attributed to increased insecticide resistance in the Delta and the possibility of a biotype of L. lineolaris in the Delta that is better adapted to cotton than the population in the Hills. A series of experiments were undertaken to evaluate these differences. The first …

Effects Of Intercropping Switchgrass In Managed Pine Stands On Plant Communities And White-Tailed Deer Forage Production, Bradley Robert Wheat

Theses and Dissertations

Interest in renewable energy and governmental mandates has motivated land managers to consider cellulosic feedstocks for bioenergy. I investigated plant community response to a system including switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) as a feedstock intercropped with loblolly pine (Pinus taeda). I estimated plant species evenness, richness, and diversity and biomass production, with emphasis on white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) forages. I detected 225 species in 2,220 1-m2 quadrats, and 7,495 biomass samples (96.4 kg dry weight) from 960 quadrats. Intercropping reduced plant species diversity, total non-pine tree biomass, and biomass of deer forages during switchgrass establishment. These effects were no longer apparent at …

Antagonism Of Barnyardgrass (Echinochloa Crus-Galli) Control With Graminicides By Glufosinate In Libertylink Soybeans (Glycine Max), Amber Nicole Eytcheson

Theses and Dissertations

Field and greenhouse experiments were conducted to determine barnyardgrass control as affected by glufosinate and graminicide tank-mixtures, application timing of tank-mixtures of graminicides plus glufosinate and application time of day of tank-mixtures of glufosinate and clethodim. When increased rates of graminicide were tank-mixed with glufosinate, barnyardgrass control was unaffected by quizalofop-P plus glufosinate; however, clethodim plus glufosinate control in the field indicated the potential for reduced barnyardgrass control. When evaluating increasing glufosinate rates tank-mixed with graminicides, barnyardgrass control was not negatively affected by the combination of glufosinate and graminicides. The difference in soybean yield among the graminicides may indicate that …

Spatial Ecology And Population Estimation Of The American Alligator (Alligator Mississippiensis) In Inland Systems Of Mississippi, Bradley Austin Strickland Aug 2015

Spatial Ecology And Population Estimation Of The American Alligator (Alligator Mississippiensis) In Inland Systems Of Mississippi, Bradley Austin Strickland

Theses and Dissertations

Wildlife management and conservation frequently rely on understanding mechanisms that influence distribution and abundance of animals. I quantified space use for a population of inland riverine adult male alligators in Mississippi. Results indicated habitat selection is a scale-dependent process and aquatic vegetation, water depth, and water temperature may be important factors influencing alligator foraging and thermoregulation. Apparent habitat suitability and low alligator density did not manifest in an observed body size-based dominance hierarchy. I also analyzed long-term Mississippi alligator spotlight survey data for trends and effects of environmental covariates on counts. Model results indicated alligator counts have increased over time. …

The Development Of Next Generation, Unsymmetrical -Nhc Pincer Ligand Architectures And Metalation To Form Unsymmetrical -Nhc Pincer Ta Complexes, Hannah Killian Box Aug 2015

The Development Of Next Generation, Unsymmetrical -Nhc Pincer Ligand Architectures And Metalation To Form Unsymmetrical -Nhc Pincer Ta Complexes, Hannah Killian Box

Theses and Dissertations

The impact of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHC) as ligands for transition metal catalysis has been rigorously investigated since their isolation by Arduengo in 1991. NHCs have become abundant in late-transition metal chemistry. This is attributed to NHCs being stronger sigma-donors than even the strongest phosphine analogues, thus constructing a transition metal-NHC complex with improved stability, catalytic reactivity, and selectivity. Additionally, pincer ligands have become recognized as an important class of ligands for transition metal complexes. The unique steric and electronic tunability of pincer ligands has resulted in pincer-transition metal complexes being exploited as catalysts for a multitude of transformations. Both ligand …

Improvements To Broiler Production Through Amino Acid Digestibility And Feed Additives, Cameron Mario Cardenas Aug 2015

Improvements To Broiler Production Through Amino Acid Digestibility And Feed Additives, Cameron Mario Cardenas

Theses and Dissertations

Improvements to broiler production can be made through the means of nutrition and preventative health care. Formulating diets based on a digestible amino acid (AA) basis decreases feed cost and improves bird performance by providing a more accurate diet based on the bird’s specific production or age nutrient requirements. The apparent ileal amino acid digestibility (AIAAD) assay utilized in Experiment 1 demonstrated inconsistent results for age effects on AIAAD of an animal by-product blends for specific AA or age. Increasing pathogenic resistance and consumer’s push on the market, has caused integrators to incorporate alternative medications or inclusion strategies to coccidiosis …

Influence Of Landscape- And Stand-Scale Factors On Avian Communities In Open Pine Ecosystems, Taylor Idora Hannah

Theses and Dissertations

Identifying species occurrence in ecosystems of high conservation concern is especially important in the context of modern landscapes. This study investigated how stand-scale and landscape-scale factors affect priority birds associated with longleaf pine (Pinus palutris) ecosystems. Herein, I compared priority bird occupancy among 12 stand types throughout the historic range of longleaf pine. I found open pine stands positively influenced red-cockaded woodpecker (Picoides borealis) and Bachman’s sparrow (Peucaea aestivalis) occupancy, but were not significantly linked to northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) and brown-headed nuthatch (Sitta pusilla) occurrence. Landscape- and stand-scale factors affected red-cockaded woodpecker, Bachman’s sparrow, and brown-headed nuthatch occupancy. Northern …

Evolutionary And Ecological Causes And Consequences Of Trophic Niche Variation In Ursids, Diana Jean Raper Lafferty Aug 2015

Evolutionary And Ecological Causes And Consequences Of Trophic Niche Variation In Ursids, Diana Jean Raper Lafferty

Theses and Dissertations

Individual variation and fitness are the cornerstones of evolution by natural selection. The trophic niche represents an important source of phenotypic variation on which natural selection can act. Although individual variation is fundamental to species-level ecological and evolutionary change, individual variation is often ignored in population-level approaches to wildlife ecology, conservation and management. Failing to link individual resource use to fitness or to biological outcomes related to fitness limits us to managing for the average resource needs of a population, which may be insufficient for protecting the diversity of resource use within populations and the underlying eco-evolutionary processes that generate …

Exploring The Role Of Dopamine In Stress Response And Aging In Drosophila Melanogaster - Implications For Neurodegenerative Diseases, Marley Elyse Hanna Aug 2015

Exploring The Role Of Dopamine In Stress Response And Aging In Drosophila Melanogaster - Implications For Neurodegenerative Diseases, Marley Elyse Hanna

Theses and Dissertations

Dopamine (DA) is a catecholamine that is involved in several neural functions such as modulation of locomotor behaviors, arousal states to appetitive aversive learning and memory. The relationships between DA, stress response and aging are unclear. This thesis examines numerous physiological, behavioral and biochemical parameters following perturbations in DA synthesis and transport in the Drosophila melanogaster model system. Intriguingly, elevated DA pools appear to confer protection, while depleted DA levels or transport increase susceptibility to oxidative insult. Resistance to oxidative stress in mutants with elevated DA levels was attributed to a significant up-regulation of glutathione S-transferase Omega-1. A sexually dimorphic …

A Study Of Abscisic Acid Regulated Enzymes And Histone Binding Proteins In Plants, Udhghatri Kolli

Theses and Dissertations

Plant hormone abscisic acid (ABA) plays a main role in coordinating various stress signals in plants. ABA regulates the expression of genes and activities of enzymes in response to various stress conditions. In the following studies we were able to study the ABA mediated regulation of enzymes in plants. Using in-gel activity analysis we identified that ABA regulates the activity of aspartate aminotransferase (AAT), an enzyme involved in nitrogen assimilation and carbohydrate metabolism. Our results indicate that phosphorylation of AAT by SnRK2.2 and 2.3 kinases results in down regulation of AAT2 and AAT3 isozyme activities in Arabidopsis. AAT was identified …

Carbonic Anhydrase Ix Induction Defines A Heterogeneous Cancer Cell Response To Hypoxia And Mediates Stem Cell-Like Properties And Sensitivity To Hdac Inhibition, I Ledaki, A Mcintyre, S Wigfield, F Buffa, Et Al Aug 2015

Carbonic Anhydrase Ix Induction Defines A Heterogeneous Cancer Cell Response To Hypoxia And Mediates Stem Cell-Like Properties And Sensitivity To Hdac Inhibition, I Ledaki, A Mcintyre, S Wigfield, F Buffa, Et Al

School of Biomedical Sciences

Carbonic anhydrase IX (CAIX) is strongly induced by hypoxia and its overexpression is associated with poor therapeutic outcome in cancer. Here, we report that hypoxia promotes tumour heterogeneity through the epigenetic regulation of CAIX. Based on hypoxic CAIX expression we identify and characterize two distinct populations of tumour cells, one that has inducible expression of CAIX and one that does not. The CAIX+ve population is enriched with cells expressing cancer stem cell markers and which have high self-renewal capacity. We show that differential CAIX expression is due to differences in chromatin structure. To further investigate the relationship between chromatin organization …
