An Exploration Of The Phylogenetic Placement Of Recently Discovered Ultrasmall Archaeal Lineages, Jeffrey M. O'Brien
An Exploration Of The Phylogenetic Placement Of Recently Discovered Ultrasmall Archaeal Lineages, Jeffrey M. O'Brien
Honors Scholar Theses
In recent years, several new clades within the domain Achaea have been discovered. This is due in part to microbiological sampling of novel environments, and the increasing ability to detect and sequence uncultivable organisms through metagenomic analysis. These organisms share certain features, such as small cell size and streamlined genomes. Reduction in genome size can present difficulties to phylogenetic reconstruction programs. Since there is less genetic data to work with, these organisms often have missing genes in concatenated multiple sequence alignments. Evolutionary Biologists have not reached a consensus on the placement of these lineages in the archaeal evolutionary tree. There …

Taxonomy Of The Bitentaculate Cirratulidae (Polychaeta), Stacy A. Tewari
Graduate Masters Theses
The bitentaculate cirratulid polychaetes are an important faunal element of both near shore and deep-sea benthic faunal communities. The true diversity of the family is currently unknown due to a large number of undescribed species and erroneously applied “cospmopolitan” names being applied to local species. Cirratulids have been misidentified even in the local waters near the University of Massachusetts Boston. The current study presents six new species from North America. Caulleriella venefica, Chaetozone anasimus, Chaetozone diodonta, and Chaetozone hystricosus are described from Boston Harbor and Massachusetts Bay where only two species had previously been reported. Aphelochaeta bullata …

The origin of eukaryotes represents an enigmatic puzzle, which is still lacking a number of essential pieces. Whereas it is currently accepted that the process of eukaryogenesis involved an interplay between a host cell and an alphaproteobacterial endosymbiont, we currently lack detailed information regarding the identity and nature of these players. A number of studies have provided increasing support for the emergence of the eukaryotic host cell from within the archaeal domain of life, displaying a specific affiliation with the archaeal TACK superphylum. Recent studies have shown that genomic exploration of yet-uncultivated archaea, the so-called archaeal ‘dark matter’, is able …

The Evidence-Based Topical Therapies For Management Of Minor Burns In Outpatient Clinic, Siphora Dien, Eliza Miranda, Erdina Hardiono D Pusponegoro, Aditya Wardhana
Journal of General - Procedural Dermatology and Venereology Indonesia
Burns are often seen in clinics or hospitals. Majority of burns are minor burns, which can be managed in outpatient setting with satisfactory result. The healing outcome depends on physician’s knowledge and competencies in burn pathogenesis and basic principles of burn care. Initial treatment of burns consists of emergency evaluation, assessment of depth and severity of burns and considerations for referral. The principles of minor wound therapy include cooling, cleansing, pain management, and topical therapy. Recently, many topical agents are available and indicated for first to second degree burn. Silver sulfadiazine (SSD) is the standard treatment; however, it has some …

Legal And Psychological Considerations In Adolescents' End-Of-Life Choices, Molly J. Walker Wilson
Legal And Psychological Considerations In Adolescents' End-Of-Life Choices, Molly J. Walker Wilson
NULR Online
In this essay, Professor Wilson reflects on the manner in which the law treats adolescents who are faced with end-of-life decisions. She begins by surveying the legal framework underlying end-of-life choices at the state and federal levels. She then discusses two decisionmakers - adolescents and adults - and the behavioral traits and biases that animate each when end-of-life decisions arise. In doing so, Wilson draws upon a rich body of empirical work on human decisionmaking. Wilson concludes that placing end-of-life decisions solely in the hands of adolescents or adults can result in suboptimal choices. She proposes the use of a …

Magnetic Ngf-Releasing Plla/Iron Oxide Nanoparticles Direct Extending Neurites And Preferentially Guide Neurites Along Aligned Electrospun Microfibers, Jonathan M. Zuidema, Christina Provenza, Tyler Caliendo, Silvio Dutz, Ryan J. Gilbert
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Nerve growth factor releasing composite nanoparticles (NGF-cNPs) were developed to direct the extension of neurite outgrowth from dorsal root ganglia (DRG). Iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles were incorporated into poly-l-lactic acid (PLLA) nanoparticles in order to position the NGF-cNPs in a culture dish. Neurites growing from DRG extended toward the NGF released from the NGF-cNPs. DRG were then cultured on aligned PLLA microfibers in the presence of NGF-cNPs, and these biomaterials combined to align DRG neurite extension along one axis and preferentially toward the NGF-cNPs. This combinatorial biomaterial approach shows promise as a strategy to direct the extension of regenerating neurites.

Forty Years On: Women Lawyers? Still On That? And Ecofeminism . . . Again?, Daniel M. Warner
Forty Years On: Women Lawyers? Still On That? And Ecofeminism . . . Again?, Daniel M. Warner
Tennessee Journal of Race, Gender, & Social Justice
Forty years ago, environmentally concerned law students put hope for sustainability in two trends. First, the burgeoning number of women law-school students held promise: upon reaching professional stride in their forties and fifties (the late 1980s and 1990s), surely their influence would disabuse law and society of enough of its patriarchal, hierarchical domination—domination over nature here—to move society toward a new, sustainable course. Second—and related—the emerging philosophy of ecofeminism promised to call out the ecocrisis and push on with positive responses. But women never assumed influential roles in the important “big firms,” and ecofeminism lost focus and dissipated in a …
Octane Fitness: The Shifting Of Patent Attorneys' Fees Moves Into High Gear., Scott Michael Flanz
Octane Fitness: The Shifting Of Patent Attorneys' Fees Moves Into High Gear., Scott Michael Flanz
Stanford Technology Law Review
The cost of attorneys’ fees in patent litigations can be enormous. Under 35 U.S.C. § 285, however, if a case is exceptional, a party need not bear the expense of its attorneys’ fees. This fee shifting can be quite advantageous. It gives parties that might otherwise be unable to afford trial the means to litigate or the leverage to settle early. In 2014, the United States Supreme Court decided Octane Fitness, LLC v. ICON Health & Fitness, LLC, announcing a watershed change in the standard for awarding attorneys’ fees in patent litigations. There the Court rejected the prior existing standard …
Helping Students Understand Media: Examining The Efficacy Of Interdisciplinary Media Training At The University Level, Hans C. Schmidt
Helping Students Understand Media: Examining The Efficacy Of Interdisciplinary Media Training At The University Level, Hans C. Schmidt
Journal of Media Literacy Education
Crowded curriculums and restrictive program requirements often mean that comprehensive media literacy education is impractical at the university level, and that media literacy competencies can be addressed only in the form of narrowly focused lessons integrated into existing classes. This study considers the extent to which such limited lessons can lead to the development of broader, well-rounded media literacy competencies. Data gathered from a quasi-experiment involving 118 participants suggests that narrowly focused media lessons can be used to encourage the development of broader media literacy competencies, but that focused instruction remains necessary as well.

Cultural Conceptualizations Of The Trauma Response: The Role Of Locus Of Control, Religiosity, And Religious Coping, Yu-Feng Emily Hu
Dissertations
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a relatively recent diagnosis that results in significant personal and societal costs. Given the diversity of American mental health consumers, a more thorough understanding of PTSD and its relation to cultural factors may have important implications for treatment implementation and refinement. Cultural factors such as locus of control, religiosity, and religious coping have been frequently overlooked in trauma research, yet show a clear link to PTSD risk and symptomatology. This study examined these cultural factors in more detail with relation to race and trauma type and their combined influence on PTSD symptomatology. A national sample …

Publications and Research
Background Fatty acid binding proteins (FABPs) serve as intracellular carriers that deliver endocannabinoids and N-acylethanolamines to their catabolic enzymes. Inhibition of FABPs reduces endocannabinoid transport and catabolism in cells and FABP inhibitors produce antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects in mice. Potential analgesic effects in mice lacking FABPs, however, have not been tested. Findings Mice lacking FABP5 and FABP7, which exhibit highest affinities for endocannabinoids, possessed elevated levels of the endocannabinoid anandamide and the related N-acylethanolamines palmitoylethanolamide and oleoylethanolamide. There were no compensatory changes in the expression of other FABPs or in endocannabinoid-related proteins in the brains of FABP5/7 knockout mice. These …
