Csf And Blood Levels Of Gfap In Alexander Disease(1,2,3)., Paige L Jany, Guillermo E Agosta, William S Benko, Jens C Eickhoff, Stephanie R Keller, Adeline Vanderver, +13 Additional Authors

Neurology Faculty Publications

Alexander disease is a rare, progressive, and generally fatal neurological disorder that results from dominant mutations affecting the coding region of GFAP, the gene encoding glial fibrillary acidic protein, the major intermediate filament protein of astrocytes in the CNS. A key step in pathogenesis appears to be the accumulation of GFAP within astrocytes to excessive levels. Studies using mouse models indicate that the severity of the phenotype correlates with the level of expression, and suppression of GFAP expression and/or accumulation is one strategy that is being pursued as a potential treatment. With the goal of identifying biomarkers that indirectly reflect …

Intrinsic Fluctuations And Driven Response Of Insect Swarms, Rui Ni, James G. Puckett, Eric R. Dufresne, Nicholas T. Ouellette Sep 2015

Intrinsic Fluctuations And Driven Response Of Insect Swarms, Rui Ni, James G. Puckett, Eric R. Dufresne, Nicholas T. Ouellette

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Animals of all sizes form groups, as acting together can convey advantages over acting alone; thus, collective animal behavior has been identified as a promising template for designing engineered systems. However, models and observations have focused predominantly on characterizing the overall group morphology, and often focus on highly ordered groups such as bird flocks. We instead study a disorganized aggregation (an insect mating swarm), and compare its natural fluctuations with the group-level response to an external stimulus. We quantify the swarm’s frequency-dependent linear response and its spectrum of intrinsic fluctuations, and show that the ratio of these two quantities has …

Impact Of Dietary Components On Nk And Treg Cell Function For Cancer Prevention, Young S. Kim, Thomas J. Sayers, Nancy H. Colburn, John A. Milner, Howard A. Young Sep 2015

Impact Of Dietary Components On Nk And Treg Cell Function For Cancer Prevention, Young S. Kim, Thomas J. Sayers, Nancy H. Colburn, John A. Milner, Howard A. Young

United States Public Health Resources

An important characteristic of cancer is that the disease can overcome the surveillance of the immune system. A possible explanation for this resistance arises from the ability of tumor cells to block the tumoricidal activity of host immune cells such as natural killer (NK) cells by inducing the localized accumulation of regulatory T (Treg) cells. Evidence exists that components in commonly consumed foods including vitamins A, D, and E, water-soluble constituents of mushrooms, polyphenolics in fruits and vegetables, and n-3 fatty acids in fish oil can modulate NK cell activities, Treg cell properties, and the interactions between those two cell …

Response Of Mammalian Macrophages To Challenge With The Chlorovirus Atcv-1, Thomas M. Petro, Irina V. Agarkova, You Zhou, Robert H. Yolken, James L. Van Etten, David D. Dunigan

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

It was recently reported that 44% of healthy humans in a study cohort had DNA sequences similar to Chlorovirus ATCV-1 (family Phycodnaviridae) in oropharyngeal samples and had decreases in visual processing and visual motor speed compared with individuals in whom no virus was detected. Moreover, mice inoculated orally with ATCV-1 developed immune responses to ATCV-1 proteins and had decreases in certain cognitive domains. Because heightened IL-6, nitric oxide (NO), and ERK MAP kinase activation from macrophages are linked to cognitive impairments, we evaluated cellular responses and viral plaque forming units in murine RAW264.7 and primary macrophages after exposure to …

Journal of STEM Teacher Education

This article discusses the findings of a qualitative evaluation study of ninth and tenth grade CincySTEM ITEST projects that were designed and implemented in a new urban STEM high school. The projects were framed by project-based learning and 5E Learning Cycle principles and utilized digital backpack equipment. Many of the projects were pedagogically innovative and engaging. The study indicated that the keys to their success were teachers’ accumulated experience, peer support, and professional development. The article concludes with the contributions of the study and the legacy of CincySTEM ITEST projects.

Engineering Design: The Great Integrator, Michael Grubbs, Greg Strimel Sep 2015

Engineering Design: The Great Integrator, Michael Grubbs, Greg Strimel

Journal of STEM Teacher Education

There is much support in the research literature and in the standards for the integration of engineering into science education, particularly the problem solving approach of engineering design. Engineering design is most often represented through design-based learning. However, teachers often do not have a clear definition of engineering design, appropriate models for teaching students, or the knowledge and experience to develop integrative learning activities. The purpose of this article is to examine definitions of engineering design and how it can be utilized to create a transdisciplinary approach to education to advance all students’ general STEM literacy skills and 21st century …

Social Network Influences And College Student Drinking, Adrienne Borders Sep 2015

Social Network Influences And College Student Drinking, Adrienne Borders

Psychology ETDs

Heavy drinking among college students inhibits academic success and poses serious risks to others in the form of alcohol-related violence, sexual assaults, and automobile accidents (Hingson, 2010). Furthermore, data have indicated an increasing rate of heavy drinking among college students (Hingson, 2010; NIAAA, 2002; NIAAA, 2007). Research suggests that parents maintain ongoing influence on young adult alcohol use during the transition to college, even in the face of potentially negative influence from peers and perceived drinking norms. However, the variables used to demonstrate this have varied widely. This study aimed to develop a cohesive model of parent and peer influences …

Oxytocin And Romantic Relationships: A Functional Perspective, Nicholas Grebe Sep 2015

Oxytocin And Romantic Relationships: A Functional Perspective, Nicholas Grebe

Psychology ETDs

Despite a large body of evidence implicating oxytocin (OT) in various classes of social relationships, researchers have only recently investigated how OT might function within human romantic relationships. I contribute to the growing literature on OT and romantic relationships with the current study, which investigated relationship features that promote OT secretion in a sample of 75 romantic couples. Partners in separate rooms were asked to write (for 10 minutes) about ways their partner did or did not support them. OT was assayed before and after this writing task, and also at a follow-up session one week later. Mixed model analyses …

The Functional Impact Of Neurocognitive Deficits In Pediatric Cancer Survivors And Associated Risk Factors, Sarah Hile Sep 2015

The Functional Impact Of Neurocognitive Deficits In Pediatric Cancer Survivors And Associated Risk Factors, Sarah Hile

Psychology ETDs

Childhood cancer survivors are at risk for long-term neurocognitive morbidities. Current research has only recently begun to examine how these neurocognitive late effects translate into impairments across important aspects of daily living. Additionally, research remains in its early stages of identifying risk factors associated with neurocognitive and broad functional impairments. The current study explores a proposed model of neurocognitive late effects by examining the relationship between neurocognitive deficits and broad functional impairment in cancer survivors relative to healthy controls. The current study also explores the contribution of associated risk factors including treatment severity and time since treatment among cancer survivors …

Hopkinson, Mingliang Liu, Qichun Yang, Chaoqun Lu, Bowen Zhang, Kamaljit Banger, Shufen Pan, Ruoying He, Zuo Xue

Knowledge about the annual and seasonal patterns of organic and inorganic carbon (C) exports from the major rivers of the world to the coastal ocean is essential for our understanding and potential management of the global C budget so as to limit anthropogenic modification of global climate. Unfortunately our predictive understanding of what controls the timing, magnitude, and quality of C export is still rudimentary. Here we use a process-based coupled hydrologic/ecosystem biogeochemistry model (the Dynamic Land Ecosystem Model) to examine how climate variability and extreme events, changing land use, and atmospheric chemistry have affected the annual and seasonal patterns …

Planned Parenthood: Adult Adoption And The Right Of Adoptees To Inherit, Richard C. Ausness Sep 2015

Planned Parenthood: Adult Adoption And The Right Of Adoptees To Inherit, Richard C. Ausness

ACTEC Law Journal

This Article is concerned with the effect of adult adoptions on the inheritance rights (in the broad sense of that term) of adult adoptees. The Article contends many adult adoption statutes assume the existence of a parent-child relationship in which the adopter is the "parent" and the adoptee is a "child" even though this is not true of all adult adoption cases. In addition, legislatures and courts frequently fail to differentiate between "quasi-familial" adoptions and "strategic" adoptions, particularly where inheritance rights are concerned.
