Development Of A Novel Observational Measure For Anxiety In Young Children: The Anxiety Dimensional Observation Scale, Nicholas D. Mian, Alice S. Carter, Daniel S. Pine, Lauren S. Wakschlag, Margaret Briggs-Gowan
Life Sciences Faculty Scholarship
Background Identifying anxiety disorders in preschool-age children represents an important clinical challenge. Observation is essential to clinical assessment and can help differentiate normative variation from clinically significant anxiety. Yet, most anxiety assessment methods for young children rely on parent-reports. The goal of this article is to present and preliminarily test the reliability and validity of a novel observational paradigm for assessing a range of fearful and anxious behaviors in young children, the Anxiety Dimensional Observation Schedule (Anx-DOS). Methods A diverse sample of 403 children, aged 3 to 6 years, and their mothers was studied. Reliability and validity in relation to …

Identification Of The Regulators Binding To The Upstream Region Of Glxr Of Corynebacterium Glutamicum, Bindu Subhadra, Durga Ray, Jong Yun Han, Kwang-Hee Bae, Jung-Kee Lee
Faculty Publications - Biological Sciences
GlxR is considered as a global transcriptional regulator controlling a large number of genes having broad physiological aspects in Corynebacterium glutamicum. However, the expression profile revealing the transcriptional control of glxR has not yet been studied in detail. DNA affinity chromatography experiments revealed the binding of transcriptional regulators SucR, RamB, GlxR, and a GntR-type protein (hereafter denoted as GntR3) to the upstream region of glxR. The binding of different regulators to the glxR promoter was confirmed by EMSA experiments. The expression of glxR was analyzed in detail under various carbon sources in the wild-type and different mutant strains. The sucR …

Background: The University of Lurio, School of Optometry in Mozambique is a new program in Africa. The school, the first to serve Portuguese-speaking Africa, can act as a template for such initiatives in other African countries and other limited-resource settings around the world. A major challenge facing such programs is the lack of knowledge about the profession, which impacts the recruitment of students and their expectations of the program. This study was conducted to understand students’ pre-enrollment educational background, perceptions and career expectations as an optometrist in Mozambique so as to inform future enrollment and other similar initiatives. Methods: First-year …

Internal Medicine
Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed malignancy in women in the United States. It is the second most common malignancy to cause death, with approximately 39,000 women dying of breast cancer in the United States in 2013. Triple negative breast cancer is defined as the absence of estrogen, progesterone and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 receptors. It has been associated with a higher incidence in African American women, a younger age and a more advanced stage at diagnosis, and an inferior overall survival. To recognize the differences of our West Virginia community population when compared to the national …

Rural Older Adults And Functional Health Literacy:Testing Self-Efficacy, Knowledge And Skills Resulting From Hands-On Health Promotion, Michele L. Dugan-Day, Susan C. Dollar, Wafaa A. Kaf
Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal
Functional Health Literacy (FHL) involves the knowledge, skills and belief in self-efficacy to use health care information in self-care. FHL is critical for rural older adults since they are at risk of poor health care outcomes. As part of the Senior Health University project, we measured the FHL of rural older adults before and after educational sessions that included hands-on skill building. Ninety-eight participants aged 60 and older were recruited from five rural congregate meal sites over two years. Survey methods allowed for paired sample t-tests of FHL variables. Findings included significant post-training increases in FHL, suggesting the potential benefit …

Negative Identity, Nancy Leong
Negative Identity, Nancy Leong
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
This Article examines the social and legal status of “negative identity”—identity marked by indifference or antipathy to something that much of society considers fundamental. As examples of negative identity, the Article considers those who identify as atheist, asexual, single, or childfree.
The Article begins by giving content to negative identity. Atheist, asexual, single, and childfree identity consists of more than merely the respective lack of religion, sexual attraction, partnership, or children. Rather, these negative identities are meaningful to group members, add value to society, and thus deserve legitimacy and respect. Unfortunately, respect is not always forthcoming: negative identity group members …
Genocide: Perspectives From The Social Sciences, Charles Anderton
Genocide: Perspectives From The Social Sciences, Charles Anderton
Economics Department Working Papers
This article surveys risk factors for genocide and genocide prevention from the perspectives of four social science disciplines: sociology, social psychology, political science, and economics. Each discipline brings a valuable set of concepts and tools to bear in genocide research. Moreover, fruitful multi- and inter-disciplinary collaboration across the four disciplines (and other fields) is shedding new insights into why genocide has have been such a recurring tragedy in human affairs and how such atrocities can be prevented.

Productivity Of Pre-Modern Agriculture In The Cucuteni-Trylillia Area, Anvar Shukurov, Mykhailo Videiko, Graeme Sarson, Kate Henderson, Robert Shiel, Pavel Dolukhanov, Galina Pashkevich
Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints
We present palaeoeconomy reconstructions for pre-modern agriculture; we select, wherever required, features and parameter values specific for the Cucuteni–Trypillia Cultural unity (CTU: 5,400–2,700 BC, mostly the territory of modern Ukraine, Moldova and Romania). We verify theself-consistency and viability of the archaeological evidence related to all major elements of the agricultural production cycle within the constraints provided by environmental and technological considerations. The starting point of our analysis is the palaeodiet structure suggested by archaeological data, stable isotope analyses of human remains, and palynology studies in the CTU area. We allow for the archeologically attested contributions of domesticated and wild animal …
