Neuropharmocological Alterations Of The Aggressive Behavior Of Crayfish, Kristi Ruvina, Daniel A. Bergman Sep 2015

Neuropharmocological Alterations Of The Aggressive Behavior Of Crayfish, Kristi Ruvina, Daniel A. Bergman

Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts

Serotonergic-related compounds often facilitate aggression in various animals, including crayfish. However to date, studies have seldom shown the mechanism by which serotonergicrelated compounds alter aggressive behavior. It is assumed that serotonin changes the neurochemistry of those injected. In our study, we have attempted to report an observable mechanism by examining the communication system of crayfish. Crayfish use urine to communicate aggressive status, thus we analyzed the frequency of urine release from those injected with serotonergic-related compounds. For each trial, two size-matched crayfish, within 5% body weight, were allowed to interact after injection with serotonin, an agonist, an antagonist, or vehicle …

Wearing Memories: Clothing And The Global Lives Of Mourning In Swaziland, Casey Golomski Sep 2015

Wearing Memories: Clothing And The Global Lives Of Mourning In Swaziland, Casey Golomski

Anthropology

This article situates a cultural phenomenon of women’s memory work through clothing in Swaziland. It explores clothing as both action and object of everyday, personalized practice that constitutes psychosocial well-being and material proximities between the living and the dead, namely, in how clothing of the deceased is privately possessed and ritually manipulated by the bereaved. While human and spiritual self-other relations are produced through clothing and its material efficacy, current global ideologies of immaterial mortuary ritual associated with Pentecostalism have emerged as contraries to this local, intersubjective grief work. This article describes how such contrarian ideologies paper over existing global …

Making Connections: Transforming General Education At The College Of St. Benedict And St. John's University, College Of Saint Benedict And Saint John's University

Academic Affairs Publications

We propose to move from a cafeteria-style general education distribution system that emphasizes the “collection of courses,” to an integrated, purposeful, and reflective general education program that places emphasis on “making connections.” Implementing this vision for general education will require a significant paradigm shift in the way we design and deliver the Common Curriculum. This paradigm shift has at least five different features:

First, it implies a shift away from an emphasis on course content to a paradigm that also stresses student learning and the fulfillment of essential learning outcomes. While course content will still be important, this report assumes …

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper, we will prove some existence and uniqueness theorems for a∗-y contractive type operators defined over bmetric spaces. In particular, we will provide results related to Ulam-Hyers stability, well-posedness and limit shadowing. The theorems presented will extend, generalize or unify several statements currently exist in the literature on those topics. We will also give examples to illustrate the applications our results.

Global Solvability Of A Continuous And Restricted Coagulation Process In A Moving Medium, Emile Franc Doungmo Goufo, Suares Clovis Oukouomi Noutchie Sep 2015

Global Solvability Of A Continuous And Restricted Coagulation Process In A Moving Medium, Emile Franc Doungmo Goufo, Suares Clovis Oukouomi Noutchie

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper, existence and uniqueness of a global solution to continuous, non-common and non-linear convectioncoagulation equations are investigated by means of various techniques. The method of characteristics (Mizohata, 1973), substochastic methods and Kato-Voigt pertubation (Banasiak et al., 2006) are exploited to show that the linear operator (transport-coagulation ) is the infinitesimal generator of a strongly continuous semigroup. Then, uniqueness of the solution to the full nonlinear problem follows by showing that the coagulation term is globally Lipschitz, hereby addressing the problem of existence and uniqueness for the combined coagulation and transport processes.

Combating Racial Health Disparities Through Medical Education: The Need For Anthropological And Genetic Perspectives In Medical Training, Deborah A. Bolnick Sep 2015

Combating Racial Health Disparities Through Medical Education: The Need For Anthropological And Genetic Perspectives In Medical Training, Deborah A. Bolnick

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

Despite major public health initiatives, significant disparities persist among racially and ethnically defined groups in the prevalence of disease, access to medical care, quality of medical care, and health outcomes for common causes of morbidity and mortality in the United States. It is critical that we develop new and creative strategies to address such inequities; mitigate the social, environmental, institutional, and genetic determinants of poor health; and combat the persistence of racial profiling in clinical contexts that further exacerbates racial/ethnic health disparities. This article argues that medical education is a prime target for intervention and that anthropologists and human population …

An Exploratory Study Of The Role An Equine- Assisted Learning Programme Plays In Diverting Young People From Criminal Pathways, Francisca O'Kelly Sep 2015

An Exploratory Study Of The Role An Equine- Assisted Learning Programme Plays In Diverting Young People From Criminal Pathways, Francisca O'Kelly

Dissertations

Interest in the potential of equine-assisted therapy and learning, where horses are incorporated in therapeutic, rehabilitative and educational interventions to ameliorate emotional, behavioural and social issues, has increased in the past half century. More recently, equine-assisted therapy and learning has been utilised in social work and penal contexts, such as in the rehabilitation and support of at-risk youth and young prisoners. However, there is a dearth of empirical research and published evaluative studies examining the effectiveness of these emerging programmes. The purpose of this study is to explore the role that a Dublin-based equine-assisted learning programme plays in diverting young …

While the management of biological invasions is often characterized by a series of single-species decisions, invasive species exist within larger food webs. These biotic interactions can alter the impact of control/eradication programs and may cause suppression efforts to inadvertently facilitate invasion spread and impact. We document the rapid replacement of the invasive Bemisia Middle East–Asia Minor I (MEAM1) cryptic biotype by the cryptic Mediterranean (MED) biotype throughout China and demonstrate that MED is more tolerant of insecticides and a better vector of tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) than MEAM1. While MEAM1 usually excludes MED under natural conditions, insecticide application …

Case Study On Ancestry Estimation In An Alaskan Native Family: Identity And Safeguards Against Reductionism, Alyssa C. Bader, Ripan S. Malhi Sep 2015

Case Study On Ancestry Estimation In An Alaskan Native Family: Identity And Safeguards Against Reductionism, Alyssa C. Bader, Ripan S. Malhi

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

Understanding the complexities of ancestry-related identity is a necessary component of ethically sound research related to the genetic ancestry of modern-day communities. This is especially true when working with indigenous populations, given the legal and social implications that genetic ancestry interpretations may have in these communities. This study employs a multicomponent approach to explore the intricacies of ancestry-related identity within one extended family with members who identify as Alaskan Native. The seven participants were interviewed about their own self-identity, perceptions regarding genetic ancestry estimation, and their knowledge of oral family history. Additionally, each participant consented to having his or her …

Cultural Incubators And Spread Of Innovation, Enrico R. Crema, Mark W. Lake Sep 2015

Cultural Incubators And Spread Of Innovation, Enrico R. Crema, Mark W. Lake

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

Several forms of social learning rely on the direct or indirect evaluation of the fitness of cultural traits. Here we argue, via a simple agent-based model, that payoff uncertainty, that is the correlation between a trait and the signal used to evaluate its fitness, plays a pivotal role in the spread of beneficial innovation. More specifically, we examine how this correlation affects the evolutionary dynamics of different forms of social learning and how each can generate divergent historical trajectories depending on the size of the sample pool. In particular, we demonstrate that social learning by copying the best model is …

Delivery Of Nucleic Acids And Nanomaterials By Cell-Penetrating Peptides: Opportunities And Challenges, Yue-Wern Huang, Han-Jung Lee, Larry Tolliver, Robert Aronstam

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Many viral and nonviral systems have been developed to aid delivery of biologically active molecules into cells. Among these, cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) have received increasing attention in the past two decades for biomedical applications. In this review, we focus on opportunities and challenges associated with CPP delivery of nucleic acids and nanomaterials. We first describe the nature of versatile CPPs and their interactions with various types of cargoes. We then discuss in vivo and in vitro delivery of nucleic acids and nanomaterials by CPPs. Studies on the mechanisms of cellular entry and limitations in the methods used are detailed.
