Tug-Of-War In The Laboratory, Cary Deck, Roman M. Sheremeta Sep 2015

Tug-Of-War In The Laboratory, Cary Deck, Roman M. Sheremeta

ESI Working Papers

Tug-of-war is a multi-battle contest often used to describe extended interactions in economics, management, political science, and other disciplines. While there has been some theoretical work, there is scant empirical evidence regarding behavior in a tug-of-war game. To the best of our knowledge, this paper provides the first experimental study of the tug-of-war. The results show notable deviations of behavior from theory. In the first battle of the tug-of-war, subjects exert fewer resources, while in the follow-up battles, they exert more resources than predicted. Also, contrary to the theoretical prediction, resource expenditures tend to increase in the duration of the …

In The Open Air: Rediscovering Self And The Environment Through Site-Specific Dance And Alternative Teaching Methods, Lisa Marie Nevada Sep 2015

In The Open Air: Rediscovering Self And The Environment Through Site-Specific Dance And Alternative Teaching Methods, Lisa Marie Nevada

Theatre & Dance ETDs

In the Open Air: Rediscovering Self and the Environment through Site-Specific Dance and Alternative Teaching Methods examines the accessibility of modern and contemporary dance today. It reflects on personal research, teaching values and the human/nature interface as motives for bringing dance out of the theatre and into nontraditional environments. I examine methodologies for creating and teaching dance in nature and nontraditional settings. To support this research I have studied Anna Halprin and her approach of taking dance outdoors as a way of promoting community and self-discovery. I also review why Halprins work matters to me. I share my inspirations and …

Is Atmospheric Phosphorus Pollution Altering Global Alpine Lake Stoichiometry?, Janice Brahney, Natalie Mahowald, Daniel S. Ward, Ashley P. Ballantyne, Jason C. Neff

Ecosystem and Conservation Sciences Faculty Publications

Anthropogenic activities have significantly altered atmospheric chemistry and changed the global mobility of key macro-nutrients. Here we show that contemporary global patterns in nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) emissions drive large hemispheric variation in precipitation chemistry. These global patterns of nutrient emission and deposition (N:P) are in turn closely reflected in the water chemistry of naturally oligotrophic lake (r2 = 0.81, p < 0.0001). Observed increases in anthropogenic N deposition play a role in nutrient concentrations (r2 = 0.02, p < 0.05); however, atmospheric deposition of P appears to be major contributor to this pattern (r2 = 0.65, p < 0.0001). Atmospheric simulations indicate a global increase in P deposition by 1.4 times the pre-industrial rate largely due to increased dust and biomass burning emissions. Although changes in the mass flux of global P deposition are smaller than for N, the impacts on primary productivity may be greater because, on average, one unit of increased P deposition has 16 times the influence of one unit of N deposition. These stoichiometric considerations, combined with the evidence presented here, suggest that increases in P deposition may be a major driver of alpine Lake trophic status, particularly in the Southern Hemisphere. These results underscore the need for the broader scientific community to consider the impact of atmospheric phosphorus deposition on the water quality of naturally oligotrophic lakes.

Remediation Of Childhood Math Anxiety And Associated Neural Circuits Through Cognitive Tutoring, Kaustubh Supekar, Teresa Iuculano, Lang Chen, Vinod Menon Sep 2015

Remediation Of Childhood Math Anxiety And Associated Neural Circuits Through Cognitive Tutoring, Kaustubh Supekar, Teresa Iuculano, Lang Chen, Vinod Menon

Psychology

Math anxiety is a negative emotional reaction that is characterized by feelings of stress and anxiety in situations involving mathematical problem solving. High math-anxious individuals tend to avoid situations involving mathematics and are less likely to pursue science, technology, engineering, and math-related careers than those with low math anxiety. Math anxiety during childhood, in particular, has adverse long-term consequences for academic and professional success. Identifying cognitive interventions and brain mechanisms by which math anxiety can be ameliorated in children is therefore critical. Here we investigate whether an intensive 8 week one-to-one cognitive tutoring program designed to improve mathematical skills reduces …

Trajectory Of A Law Professor, Meera E. Deo Sep 2015

Trajectory Of A Law Professor, Meera E. Deo

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

Women of color are already severely underrepresented in legal academia; as enrollment drops and legal institutions constrict further, race and gender disparities will likely continue to grow. Yet, as many deans and associate deans, most of whom are white, step down from leadership positions during these tumultuous times in legal education, opportunities have arisen for women of color to fill those roles in record numbers. However, there are individual and structural barriers preventing access to the leadership level. Significant hurdles have long prevented women of color from entering law teaching. Thus, this Article provides evidence to support the thesis that …
