“Because That's Where The Money Is”: A Theory Of Corporate Legal Compliance, William C. Bradford Sep 2015

“Because That's Where The Money Is”: A Theory Of Corporate Legal Compliance, William C. Bradford

The Journal of Business, Entrepreneurship & the Law

The study and regulation of firms per se as agents of compliance may be misguided. Firms are abstractions that exist only in the legal, and not the natural, sense, and, as such, utterly lack decisional capacity. Firms do not decide whether to comply with law; people, specifically officers who exercise decisional authority on their behalf, do. Any theory that would explain or predict firm compliance must account for the individual level of analysis. However, most corporate legal compliance research minimizes the salience of personality. Accordingly, Part II traces associations between personalities of CEOs and firm compliance with obligations arising under …

Pubertal Maturation And Depressive Symptoms Among Developing Young Women: Examining The Moderating Influence Of Parent-Daughter Relationship Quality., Courtney L. Whitt Sep 2015

Pubertal Maturation And Depressive Symptoms Among Developing Young Women: Examining The Moderating Influence Of Parent-Daughter Relationship Quality., Courtney L. Whitt

Open Access Dissertations

Given the heightened incidence of depression among girls of pubertal age, this study sought to examine the interrelationships between pubertal advancement, the nature and stability of parent-daughter relationship quality, and depressive symptomology. Grounded in an Integrated Life Course model, and drawing upon diathesis-stress, stress-buffering, and family life cycle perspectives, an essential aim of this research was to identify risks and resources in the parent-daughter relationship that may actualize or attenuate the emergence of depressive symptomology in puberty. Study hypotheses were examined in a diverse, nationally representative sample of girls, ages 12 to 16, who participated in the National Longitudinal Study …

© 2015 American Chemical Society. Periodic patterns resembling spirals were observed to form spontaneously upon unassisted cooling of d-glucaric acid- and d-galactaric acid-based polyamide solutions in N-methyl-N-morpholine oxide (NMMO) monohydrate. Similar observations were made in d-galactaric acid-based polyamide/ionic liquid (IL) solutions. The morphologies were investigated by optical, polarized light and confocal microscopy assays to reveal pattern details. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to monitor solution thermal behavior. Small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering data reflected the complex and heterogeneous nature of the self-organized patterns. Factors such as concentration and temperature were found to influence spiral dimensions and geometry. The distance between …

Disruption Of Daily Rhythms By High-Fat Diet Is Reversible, Katrina L. Branecky, Kevin D. Niswender, Julie S. Pendergast Sep 2015

Disruption Of Daily Rhythms By High-Fat Diet Is Reversible, Katrina L. Branecky, Kevin D. Niswender, Julie S. Pendergast

Biology Faculty Publications

In mammals a network of circadian clocks coordinates behavior and physiology with 24-h environmental cycles. Consumption of high-fat diet disrupts this temporal coordination by advancing the phase of the liver molecular clock and altering daily rhythms of eating behavior and locomotor activity. In this study we sought to determine whether these effects of high-fat diet on circadian rhythms were reversible. We chronically fed mice high-fat diet and then returned them to low-fat chow diet. We found that the phase of the liver PERIOD2::LUCIFERASE rhythm was advanced (by 4h) and the daily rhythms of eating behavior and locomotor activity were altered …

Genome-Wide Transcriptome Analysis Of Cotton (Gossypium Hirsutum L.) Identifies Candidate Gene Signatures In Response To Aflatoxin Producing Fungus Aspergillus Flavus, Renesh Bedre, Kanniah Rajasekaran, Venkata Ramanarao Mangu, Luis Eduardo Sanchez Timm, Deepak Bhatnagar, Niranjan Baisakh

Faculty Publications

Aflatoxins are toxic and potent carcinogenic metabolites produced from the fungi Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus. Aflatoxins can contaminate cottonseed under conducive preharvest and postharvest conditions. United States federal regulations restrict the use of aflatoxin contaminated cottonseed at >20 ppb for animal feed. Several strategies have been proposed for controlling aflatoxin contamination, and much success has been achieved by the application of an atoxigenic strain of A. flavus in cotton, peanut and maize fields. Development of cultivars resistant to aflatoxin through overexpression of resistance associated genes and/or knocking down aflatoxin biosynthesis of A. flavus will be an effective strategy for …

Towards A New Global Strategy For Women’S, Children’S And Adolescents’ Health, Marleen Temmerman, Rajat Khosla, Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta, Flavia Bustreo

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa

The year 2015 marks a defining moment for the health of women, children, and adolescents. It is the end point of the United Nations’ millennium development goals, and their transition to the sustainable development goals, and also the 20th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development’s plan of action and the Beijing Declaration and platform of action.

This is a moment of reflection as well as celebration. Although great strides have been made in reducing maternal and child mortality, showing that change is possible, many countries are lagging behind in reaching millennium development goal 4 (to reduce the …

High Molecular Weight Surfactants For The Formation Of Complex Emulsions, Kevin Y.-S. Huang Sep 2015

High Molecular Weight Surfactants For The Formation Of Complex Emulsions, Kevin Y.-S. Huang

Doctoral Dissertations

Emulsions exhibit great utility in a wide variety of industries, ranging from food, cosmetics, drugs, polishes, and agriculture to paving materials, paints, coatings, photography, and electrically and thermally insulating materials. Surfactants stabilize these emulsions by creating a barrier to coalescence of the constituent droplets. In the case of molecular surfactants, this stabilization is achieved by lowering the interfacial tension in a mixture whereas colloidal or particle surfactants prevent coalescence via steric stabilization of the interface. The type of emulsion formed is dictated by the surfactant’s preference to be dispersed or the particle’s preference to be wetted by one phase over …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The direct negative effects of invasive plant species on agriculture and biodiversity are well known, but their indirect effects on human health, and particularly their interactions with disease-transmitting vectors, remains poorly explored. This study sought to investigate the impact of the invasive Neotropical weed Parthenium hysterophorus and its toxins on the survival and energy reserves of the malaria vector Anopheles gambiae. In this study, we compared the fitness of An. gambiae fed on three differentially attractive mosquito host plants and their major toxins; the highly aggressive invasive Neotropical weed Parthenium hysterophorus (Asteraceae) in East Africa and two other adapted weeds, …
