What Can Inactivity (In Its Various Forms) Reveal About Affective States In Non-Human Animals? A Review, C Fureix, Rk Meagher Oct 2015

What Can Inactivity (In Its Various Forms) Reveal About Affective States In Non-Human Animals? A Review, C Fureix, Rk Meagher

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Captive/domestic animals are often described as inactive, with the implicit or explicit implication that this high level of inactivity is a welfare problem. Conversely, not being inactive enough may also indicate or cause poor welfare. In humans, too much inactivity can certainly be associated with either negative or positive affective states. In non-human animals, however, the affective states associated with elevated or suppressed levels of inactivity are still not well understood. Part of the complexity is due to the fact that there are many different forms of inactivity, each likely associated with very different affective states. This paper has two …

Role Of Annexin A6 In Cancer (Review), Houbao Qi, Shuqing Liu, Chunmei Guo, Jiasheng Wang, Frederick T. Greenaway, Ming Zhong Sun

Chemistry

Annexin A6 (AnxA6) is a member of a conserved superfamily of Ca2+-dependent membrane-binding annexin proteins. It participates in membrane and cytoskeleton organization, cholesterol homeostasis, membrane trafficking, cell adhesion and signal transduction. The expression levels of AnxA6 are closely associated with melanoma, cervical cancer, epithelial carcinoma, breast cancer, gastric cancer, prostate cancer, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, chronic myeloid leukemia, large-cell lymphoma and myeloma. AnxA6 exhibits dual functions in cancer, acting either as a tumor suppressor or promoter, depending on the type of cancer and the degree of malignancy. In several types of cancer, AnxA6 acts via Ras, Ras/MAPK and/or FAK/PI3K signaling pathways …

Increased Expression Of Napdh Oxidase 4 In Systemic Sclerosis Dermal Fibroblasts: Regulation By Transforming Growth Factor Β., Sonsoles Piera-Velazquez, Alma Makul, Sergio A. Jimenez

Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers

OBJECTIVE: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is characterized by severe and often progressive fibrosis of the skin and multiple internal organs. The mechanisms responsible for these alterations remain obscure, although excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated oxidative stress has been implicated. NOX-4 is 1 of 7 isoforms of NADPH oxidase responsible for the generation of ROS. The purpose of this study was to examine NOX-4 expression in skin and cultured dermal fibroblasts from SSc patients and to examine its regulation by transforming growth factor β1 (TGFβ1).

METHODS: NOX-4 was assessed in normal and SSc skin by immunohistologic analysis and in normal and SSc …

The Texas Heart Institute Journal

The customary recommendation is that oral anticoagulation be withdrawn a few months after cryoablation for atrial fibrillation, independently of left atrial mechanical contraction in patients in sinus rhythm. Recently, a 5-fold increase in stroke has been described in sinus-rhythm patients who lack atrial mechanical contraction. One aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of oral anticoagulation in preventing postoperative stroke in such patients.

This prospective study divided 154 sinus-rhythm patients into 2 groups, depending on the presence (108 patients) or absence (46 patients) of left atrial mechanical contraction at 6 months after surgery, and monitored them annually for …

Support For Gestalt Versus Business-As-Usual Theories Of Insight Depends On Operational Definition Of Insight, Kimberly D. Lee Oct 2015

Support For Gestalt Versus Business-As-Usual Theories Of Insight Depends On Operational Definition Of Insight, Kimberly D. Lee

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Some theories propose that insight involves automatic processes that are responsible for restructuring. Other theories postulate that the mechanisms surrounding restructuring are controlled and effortful. The current study tested these theories by comparing different methodology and operational definitions that have been used in previous research to investigate the nature of “Aha!” experiences and impasse in insightful problem solving. One hundred two undergraduate psychology students from Old Dominion University completed working memory tasks, six classic insight problems, and gave initial problem representation ratings for the insight problems before solution attempt. Using a think-aloud protocol, we assessed the occurrence of impasse during …

For Whom The Data Tolls: A Reunified Theory Of Fourth And Fifth Amendment Jurisprudence, Bryan H. Choi Oct 2015

For Whom The Data Tolls: A Reunified Theory Of Fourth And Fifth Amendment Jurisprudence, Bryan H. Choi

Cardozo Law Review

Data privacy demands a reunified theory of the Fourth and Fifth Amendments. Data technologies allow personal information to be disembodied from physical bodies and "possessed" simultaneously by both first persons and third parties. As a result, the government has been able to use a divide-and-conquer strategy to obtain incriminating evidence alternately from the data intermediary or from the suspect.

Currently, Fourth Amendment doctrine and Fifth Amendment doctrine work at cross-purposes. The privacy community has already sounded the alarm on the "third-party doctrine," which allows the government to sidestep the Fourth Amendment when demanding evidence from third parties. But few have …

Plate Pouring Iv, Alexander F. Kwakye, Carey D. Haefele, Arjay Parhar

Mechanical Engineering Design Project Class

From a high school biology class to a small research facility, this machine will cheaply (relative to its competitors) automatically pour a layer of agar into a large number of Petri dishes in order to grow bacteria micro-cultures. Designed to be powered within a fume hood, the user simply needs to open up the containment facility, insert stacks of Petri dishes, and pour in a batch of premade agar. Within the hour, approximately 120 Petri dishes should be layered and ready for further experimentation.

This project, Plate Pouring III, is an automated device that fills petri dishes with a liquid solution called Agar. This is done in a sterile environment, not needing any human interaction for the mechanism to function. It safely removes the lid individually from petri dishes, injects the solution, reinserts the lid, and stacks the filled petri dishes.

Mems 411 Final Report - Plate Pourer Ii, Minsoo Ha, Patrick Champlin, Timothy Young Oct 2015

Mems 411 Final Report - Plate Pourer Ii, Minsoo Ha, Patrick Champlin, Timothy Young

Mechanical Engineering Design Project Class

The objective of this project is to create a machine that has the capability to pour Petri dishes. The usage of this machine must be easier than simply performing the task by hand, be automated, capable of producing 120 plates per hour, be sterile, prevent the plates from sloshing, fit in a fume hood, and stack the plates while they are cooling so that they may cool properly. This all was accomplished with a device that drops the plates vertically down, fills them, and then lowers them into storage thanks to their now increased mass and a spring-loaded platform.

Plate Pouring Device I, Katelyn Jones, Lydia Stensberg, Rebecca Ansolabehere

Mechanical Engineering Design Project Class

The goal of this project was to build a cost-effective automated system that can handle the process of pouring agar into plates, but is also easily sterilized and operates with no supervision. This agar plate-pouring machine is intended to increase productivity in small-scale biology and research labs by pouring at least 120 plates per hour while keeping the agar sterile and preventing contamination. This was accomplished with a multi-valve system controlled by an Arduino board which could also fit inside of a fume hood.

Source-Specific Molecular Signatures For Light-Absorbing Organic Aerosols, Amanda Susan Willoughby Oct 2015

Source-Specific Molecular Signatures For Light-Absorbing Organic Aerosols, Amanda Susan Willoughby

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Organic aerosols (OA) are universally regarded as an important component of the atmosphere based on quantitative significance as well as the far-reaching impact they have on global climate forcing and human health. Despite the acknowledged importance, OA amounts and impacts remain the largest uncertainties regarding radiative forcing estimates. Incomplete chemical characterization of aerosol organic matter (OM) and a lack of concrete source apportionment is a major source of this uncertainty. The primary focus of this study is to provide much needed molecular details regarding ambient OA from key emission sources, and establish links between molecular and optical properties.

Complete chemical …

The Effects Of Task Criticality And Target Modality On A Simulated Battlefield Search Task, Julie A. Hanson Oct 2015

The Effects Of Task Criticality And Target Modality On A Simulated Battlefield Search Task, Julie A. Hanson

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Warfighters must rely on lengthy instruction manuals when asked to perform tasks in critical environments. These instruction manuals are predominantly written in text and rarely include images. Several theoretical frameworks, including the Pictorial Superiority Effect, posit images to be more effective forms of instruction for short-term memory recall tasks. It is unclear whether pictures are superior forms of instruction for use in tasks with potential life-threatening consequences. Recently, studies have attempted to define and manipulate task criticality to determine the effects a critical scenario may have on operator performance. Findings have been equivocal, perhaps because of the ambiguity associated with …

Examining The Factors Related To Bisexual Individuals' Preference For Future Parenting Partner, Laurin Beth Roberts Oct 2015

Examining The Factors Related To Bisexual Individuals' Preference For Future Parenting Partner, Laurin Beth Roberts

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Although a notable amount of research has examined sexual minority parents and their families over the last decade, very little literature has focused on bisexual parents. Most of the research emphasis has been placed on parenting by lesbian women and gay men, with parenting by bisexual individuals often being subsumed by these categories. There is currently a lack of understanding of what factors contribute to bisexual individuals’ preference for gender of their future parenting partner. Because of this, the current study examined the factors related to parenting partner preferences of bisexual students. Forty-seven bisexual individuals completed a series of questionnaires …

The Effects Of Urbanization On Tick Parasitism Rates In Birds Of Southeastern Virginia, Erin Leigh Heller Oct 2015

The Effects Of Urbanization On Tick Parasitism Rates In Birds Of Southeastern Virginia, Erin Leigh Heller

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The coastal region of southeastern Virginia is one of the largest urban areas along one of North America’s migratory flyways. Because hundreds of avian species use this flyway, understanding factors affecting birds and their health is of paramount concern. Within this region, 14 species of ticks have been documented, all of which may serve as vectors of mammal (including human) pathogens. By sampling birds at sites of varying levels of urbanization within the coastal southeastern urban matrix, I studied the relationship between ticks and their avian hosts, and how this relationship varies seasonally. Mistnets were set-up at five permanent sites …

Canadian Women In Prison: A Racial And Gendered Discursive Analysis, Eva Osazuwa Sep 2015

Canadian Women In Prison: A Racial And Gendered Discursive Analysis, Eva Osazuwa

Social Justice and Community Engagement

Research shows that women are the fastest growing prison population worldwide, and this trend proves no different in Canada (Balfour, 2008; Pate, 2006; Pollack, 2003; Sudbury, 2005). According to the Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies of Manitoba (n.d.) (CAEFS), this past decade has seen a 50 percent increase in the number of women who are federally incarcerated in comparison to the 15 percent increase for men. More specifically, Sudbury (2005) argued that poor, young, racialized women and girls are amid the fastest growing population in Canadian prisons. That said, the goal of this paper is to examine government documents …
