© 2015 Geological Society of America. The evolution of oxygenic photosynthesis was the most important geochemical event in Earth history, causing the Great Oxidation Event (GOE) ~2.4 b.y. ago. However, evidence is mixed as to whether O2 production occurred locally as much as 2.8 b.y. ago, creating O2 oases, or initiated just prior to the GOE. The biogeochemical dynamics of possible O2 oases have been poorly constrained due to the absence of modern analogs. However, cyanobacteria in microbial mats in a perennially anoxic region of Lake Fryxell, Antarctica, create a 1-2 mm O2-containing layer in the upper mat during summer, …

© 2016 American Ornithologists' Union. The widespread application of high-throughput sequencing in studying evolutionary processes and patterns of diversification has led to many important discoveries. However, the barriers to utilizing these technologies and interpreting the resulting data can be daunting for first-time users. We provide an overview and a brief primer of relevant methods (e.g., whole-genome sequencing, reduced-representation sequencing, sequence-capture methods, and RNA sequencing), as well as important steps in the analysis pipelines (e.g., loci clustering, variant calling, whole-genome and transcriptome assembly). We also review a number of applications in which researchers have used these technologies to address questions related …

© 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Molecular docking is an important component of computer-aided drug discovery. In this communication, we describe GeauxDock, a new docking approach that builds on the ideas of ligand homology modeling. GeauxDock features a descriptor-based scoring function integrating evolutionary constraints with physics-based energy terms, a mixed-resolution molecular representation of protein-ligand complexes, and an efficient Monte Carlo sampling protocol. To drive docking simulations toward experimental conformations, the scoring function was carefully optimized to produce a correlation between the total pseudoenergy and the native-likeness of binding poses. Indeed, benchmarking calculations demonstrate that GeauxDock has a strong capacity to identify …

Deleuze, Haraway, And The Radical Democracy Of Desire, Robert Leston Oct 2015

Deleuze, Haraway, And The Radical Democracy Of Desire, Robert Leston

Publications and Research

In response to suggestions that Deleuze and Guattari are the “enemy” of companion species, this essay explores the tension between Donna Haraway’s attacks against Deleuze and Guattari and their philosophy of becoming animal. The essay goes on to contextualize Deleuze and Guattari’s statements against pet owners through a discussion of the psychoanalytical refiguration of desire and shows how their ostensible attack against pet owners fits into their larger critique against capitalism. The essay illustrates why Deleuze and Guattari and Haraway are more in agreement than first meets the eye, finding commensurability through Haraway’s early work on embryology. Becoming animal does …

Our Liberation And The Liberation Of Our Images: Friedrich Schiller And The Politics Of The Image, Peter W. Rosenberger Oct 2015

Our Liberation And The Liberation Of Our Images: Friedrich Schiller And The Politics Of The Image, Peter W. Rosenberger

Student Publications

In this paper, I will compare the aesthetic philosophies put forward in Friedrich Schiller’s On the Aesthetic Education of Man and Plato's Republic. Using Schiller's more robust aesthetic philosophy and its political import, I will argue that the government of Plato's Republic would not create freedom for its citizens. Then, I will carry Schiller's aesthetics and politics forward to argue, using Freud and a number of thinkers who champion Freud’s work, that economic interests can also limit the freedoms of a nation's citizens. Finally, I will argue that Schiller's aesthetic philosophy can deliver a political freedom free from the state …

A Consensus On The Definition And Knowledge Base For Computer Graphics, Michael Alden Roller Oct 2015

A Consensus On The Definition And Knowledge Base For Computer Graphics, Michael Alden Roller

Open Access Dissertations

Despite several decades of historical innovation, measurable impacts, and multiple specializations the existing knowledge base for Computer Graphics (CG) lacks consensus, and numerous definitions for it have been published based on distinct contexts. Disagreement among post-secondary academics has divided CG programs into three contextual areas that emphasize different topics. This division has resulted in the decontextualization of CG education, and CG programs now face several challenges in meeting the needs of industry. Employing the Delphi Method, this investigation explored the perceptions among post-secondary educators and industry professionals about the definition of CG and how it is identified in terms of …

Scholarly Communication Coaching: Liaison Librarians' Shifting Roles, Todd Bruns, John Stephen Brantley, Kirstin Duffin Oct 2015

Scholarly Communication Coaching: Liaison Librarians' Shifting Roles, Todd Bruns, John Stephen Brantley, Kirstin Duffin

Faculty & Staff Research & Creative Activity

Two and a half decades into the open access (OA) movement, rapid changes in scholarly communication are creating significant demands on scholars. Today’s scholars must wrestle with meeting funder mandates for providing public access to their research, managing and preserving raw data, establishing/publishing open access journals, understanding the difference between “green OA” and “gold OA,” navigating the complicated issues around copyright and intellectual property, avoiding potentially predatory publishers, adapting their tenure plans to OA, and discovering increasing amounts of OA resources for their research and their curricular materials. These demands present an opportunity and a need for librarians to step …

Etsu Today - Fall 2015, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University

ETSU Today [magazine]

The 1960s were a defining era for East Tennessee State University. In addition to achieving university status in 1963, the decade also saw the institution award its first master’s degree and the arrival of Dr. D.P. Culp as our fourth President. It was also during this time that a major boom in construction took place, as facilities such as Lamb Hall, the Reece Museum, Ross Hall, Hutcheson Hall, Wilson-Wallis Hall, Nicks Hall (then the former Sherrod Library), and many dormitories were erected. Major construction also continued in the 1970s with buildings such as the Culp Center, the Mini-Dome, and our …

A Polynomial Time Algorithm For Computing The Area Under A Gdt Curve, Aleksandar Poleksic Oct 2015

A Polynomial Time Algorithm For Computing The Area Under A Gdt Curve, Aleksandar Poleksic

Faculty Work

Background

Progress in the field of protein three-dimensional structure prediction depends on the development of new and improved algorithms for measuring the quality of protein models. Perhaps the best descriptor of the quality of a protein model is the GDT function that maps each distance cutoff θ to the number of atoms in the protein model that can be fit under the distance θ from the corresponding atoms in the experimentally determined structure. It has long been known that the area under the graph of this function (GDT_A) can serve as a reliable, single numerical measure …

An Investigation Into The Biological Responses Induced Following Oral Exposure To Silver Nanoparticles, Anna Murphy Oct 2015

An Investigation Into The Biological Responses Induced Following Oral Exposure To Silver Nanoparticles, Anna Murphy

Doctoral

This study aims to investigate the biological responses induced by silver nanoparticles (AgNP) following oral exposure. The commonality of AgNP in consumer goods highlights the need for a thorough investigation into the interaction with and subsequent responses evoked in living systems following exposure. Firstly, the potential interaction with and effect of biofluid components, namely cholic acid (CA), deoxycholic acid (DCA) and ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), on AgNP toxicity was investigated. Two cell lines corresponding to organs related to the biofluid components, HepG-2 a hepatocellular carcinoma derived from liver tissue and Hep2 an epithelial cell line, were employed. Physicochemical and cytotoxic screening …
