Future Of Genomics: Presentations, Sarah O'Leary-Driscoll

Genomics: Past & Future

In his testimony to a House of Representatives sub-committee on health, director of the National Human Genome Research Institute, Francis S. Collins, said that the future of genomics had three main focal points:

"Genomics to Biology: The human genome sequence provides foundational information that now will allow development of a comprehensive catalog of all of the genome's components, determination of the function of all human genes, and deciphering of how genes and proteins work together in pathways and networks.

Genomics to Health: Completion of the human genome sequence offers a unique opportunity to understand the role of genetic factors in …

Research Project

The presentations for your project should follow the same format that the paper would, but in a much more abbreviated form, aim for 5-7 minutes.

Sequence Alignments

Now that you have learned how to do the four basic sequence alignments (Pairwise and Multiple for both nucleotide and protein sequences) select a gene/protein, it may be one that you've used before, and run each of these alignments.

Alignment Information, Sarah O'Leary-Driscoll

Sequence Alignments

Pairwise DNA alignment is frequently used to identify similar regions that will show how two sequences have functional or structural similarities. It can also be used to show how exons and introns change between different sequences and whether they have an effect on the final structure of the RNA after the DNA is processed within a cell.

Sequencing & Genome Mining

With your partner, create some sort of visual (table, map, chart, other, ask me!) that compares the main types of sequencing that we discussed, as well as two of the techniques considered 'next generation'.

Protein Folding & Structure Prediction Posters

When proteins form polypeptide chains, they form primary structure - their amino acid sequence - secondary structure - their local shapes - and tertiary structure - their global fold and shape. Tertiary structure and its prediction are of vital importance to the biology community because of its importance for manipulating gene expression, cell-wide processes, and more. Because of the innumerable possibilities for even a simple primary structure protein, prediction is incredibly difficult. As bioinformatics technologies advance, though, our understanding of tertiary folding advances.

Infection with the human liver fluke Opisthorchis viverrini induces cancer of the bile ducts, cholangiocarcinoma (CCA). Injury from feeding activities of this parasite within the human biliary tree causes extensive lesions, wounds that undergo protracted cycles of healing, and re-injury over years of chronic infection. We show that O. viverrini secreted proteins accelerated wound resolution in human cholangiocytes, an outcome that was compromised following silencing of expression of the fluke-derived gene encoding the granulin-like growth factor, Ov-GRN-1. Recombinant Ov-GRN-1 induced angiogenesis and accelerated mouse wound healing. Ov-GRN-1 was internalized by human cholangiocytes and induced gene and protein expression changes associated …

The P53 Tumor Suppressor Protein Protects Against Chemotherapeutic Stress And Apoptosis In Human Medulloblastoma Cells., Sarah Waye, Aisha Naeem, Muhammad Umer Choudhry, Erika Parasido, Lucas Tricoli, Brian R. Rood, +6 Additional Authors

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

Medulloblastoma (MB), a primitive neuroectodermal tumor, is the most common malignant childhood brain tumor and remains incurable in about a third of patients. Currently, survivors carry a significant burden of late treatment effects. The p53 tumor suppressor protein plays a crucial role in influencing cell survival in response to cellular stress and while the p53 pathway is considered a key determinant of anti-tumor responses in many tumors, its role in cell survival in MB is much less well defined. Herein, we report that the experimental drug VMY-1-103 acts through induction of a partial DNA damage-like response as well induction of …

Assessing The Effects Of An Std Educational Intervention On Greek Society College Students’ Knowledge And Attitudes Toward Safe Sex Behaviors, Jennifer W. Goldsberry Oct 2015

Assessing The Effects Of An Std Educational Intervention On Greek Society College Students’ Knowledge And Attitudes Toward Safe Sex Behaviors, Jennifer W. Goldsberry

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Translational and Clinical Research Projects

This study measured the effectiveness of an evidence-based educational intervention targeting STD prevention in Greek society members attending college and examined relationships between sexual health knowledge, attitudes toward safe sex behaviors, and sexual demographics. One hundred thirty-two Greek society members attending college participated. Instruments measured demographic characteristics, knowledge regarding sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and attitudes toward practicing safe sex behaviors at baseline and one week post-intervention. There was a significant increase in STD knowledge from baseline (M=13.03, SD=6.5) to one week (M=20.27, SD=4.9) t (131) = -13.53, p = .000. Fraternity members were more …

Women With Disabilities: Reproductive Care And Women’S Health, Stephanie Stockburger, Hatim A. Omar Oct 2015

Women With Disabilities: Reproductive Care And Women’S Health, Stephanie Stockburger, Hatim A. Omar

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

Children, adolescents, and women with disabilities experience the same sexual development, pubertal changes, concerns, and desire to reproduce as their typically developing counterparts. However, society has tended to stigmatize women with disabilities as “asexual” and ignore this aspect of their health care. These women are less likely to receive gynecological exams, contraception, and evaluation of sexual dysfunction. Unfortunately, having a disability places women at risk for sexual exploitation and abuse as well as sexually transmitted infections. Therefore, reproductive health care for these women is imperative. A number of barriers to receiving reproductive care exist. However, with proper education and knowledge …
