Here we present a phylogeny of beetles (Insecta: Coleoptera) based on DNA sequence data from eight nuclear genes, including six single-copy nuclear protein-coding genes, for 367 species representing 172 of 183 extant families. Our results refine existing knowledge of relationships among major groups of beetles. Strepsiptera was confirmed as sister to Coleoptera and each of the suborders of Coleoptera was recovered as monophyletic. Interrelationships among the suborders, namely Polyphaga (Adephaga (Archostemata, Myxophaga)), in our study differ from previous studies. Adephaga comprised two clades corresponding to Hydradephaga and Geadephaga. The series and superfamilies of Polyphaga were mostly monophyletic. The traditional Cucujoidea …

An Invitation To Measure Insect Cold Tolerance: Methods, Approaches, And Workflow., Brent J Sinclair, Litza E Coello Alvarado, Laura V Ferguson

Biology Publications

Insect performance is limited by the temperature of the environment, and in temperate, polar, and alpine regions, the majority of insects must face the challenge of exposure to low temperatures. The physiological response to cold exposure shapes the ability of insects to survive and thrive in these environments, and can be measured, without great technical difficulty, for both basic and applied research. For example, understanding insect cold tolerance allows us to predict the establishment and spread of insect pests and biological control agents. Additionally, the discipline provides the tools for drawing physiological comparisons among groups in wider studies that may …

Poor Air Quality Affects Those Who Have Served In Afghanistan, Kaylee Wheeler Oct 2015

Poor Air Quality Affects Those Who Have Served In Afghanistan, Kaylee Wheeler

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

The United States has been in the war against terrorism for the past 14 years in Afghanistan. Afghanistan is a country torn by war for hundreds of years which has impacted the landscape and the environment. The economy of Afghanistan has suffered as a result and the country is classified as an underdeveloped country, but the economy is gaining on a slow increase. There is still little enforcement on the environmental regulations resulting in thousands of Afghani deaths every year from poor air quality. The United States has contributed to the poor air quality by using open burn pits to …

Communication Ethics In The Communication Curriculum: United States, Canada, And Puerto Rico, Tammy Swenson-Lepper Oct 2015

Communication Ethics In The Communication Curriculum: United States, Canada, And Puerto Rico, Tammy Swenson-Lepper

Communication Studies Faculty Works

This study investigated the status of communication ethics pedagogy at colleges and universities in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Data were collected from 193 institutions that responded to an online survey. Results showed an increase in communication ethics courses compared with 19 years ago, with 51% now offering a required or optional course in communication ethics. The most common reason for not offering a stand-alone course was that ethical concerns were included in other classes. Respondents noted a decrease in focus on classical ethical theory and an increase in attention to applied ethics and moral reasoning skills. These …

Sexual And Reproductive Health Rights: Comparing Ethnic Groups In Malaysia, R.A. Raja Noriza, S. Nur Intan Shafinas, T. Makmor, Z. Rustam Khairi

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Power works differently in different society. The norms in the cultural setting show that men play dominant and highly influential role particularly in family decision making. Although the issue of decision making in the family is crucial, the studies on this subject remain limited, particularly in Malaysia. Studies in developing countries indicated that power is perceived as control over one's partner and the ability to make decisions. Objectives: This paper explores the decision making power over women's sexual and reproductive health rights in Malaysia using the person who influence the decision making process as the proxy. Results: Based on the …

When An Invasive Plant Fails To Invade, Stephen L. Young Oct 2015

When An Invasive Plant Fails To Invade, Stephen L. Young

West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte

In 2012, much of the US Midwest was gripped in one of the most severe droughts on record. While conducting experimental fieldwork at a site in Nebraska during June of that year, I noticed a single musk thistle (Carduus nutans; Figure 1) that appeared to be in the bolt or early flowering stage, which is typical for the species at that time. Here, however, two things were unusual: this plant was less than 1 meter tall (with adequate moisture and light, musk thistle typically grows to heights of 1–2.5 meters before flowering), and was only 3 months old (the bolt …

A Computational Translation Of The Phaistos Disk, Peter Revesz Oct 2015

A Computational Translation Of The Phaistos Disk, Peter Revesz

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

For over a century the text of the Phaistos Disk remained an enigma without a convincing translation. This paper presents a novel semi-automatic translation method that uses for the first time a recently discovered connection between the Phaistos Disk symbols and other ancient scripts, including the Old Hungarian alphabet. The connection between the Phaistos Disk script and the Old Hungarian alphabet suggested the possibility that the Phaistos Disk language may be related to Proto-Finno-Ugric, Proto-Ugric, or Proto-Hungarian. Using words and suffixes from those languages, it is possible to translate the Phaistos Disk text as an ancient sun hymn, possibly connected …

A Computational Model Of The Spread Of Ancient Human Populations Based On Mitochondrial Dna Samples, Peter Revesz Oct 2015

A Computational Model Of The Spread Of Ancient Human Populations Based On Mitochondrial Dna Samples, Peter Revesz

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

The extraction of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from ancient human population samples provides important data for the reconstruction of population influences, spread and evolution from the Neolithic to the present. This paper presents a mtDNA-based similarity measure between pairs of human populations and a computational model for the evolution of human populations. In a computational experiment, the paper studies the mtDNA information from five Neolithic and Bronze Age populations, namely the Andronovo, the Bell Beaker, the Minoan, the Rössen and the Únětice populations. In the past these populations were identified as separate cultural groups based on geographic location, age and the …

Science & Spaghetti Monsters: Understanding The Nature Of Scientific Knowledge & Research, Sarah O'Leary-Driscoll

Nature of Science

What is science?

When students are asked to define science, many of them define science as “a body of knowledge gained by performing experiments.”

A more appropriate definition, however, is that “Science is … a process of inquiry aimed at building a testable body of knowledge open to rejection or confirmation” (Shermer, 2005).

There are three important points that this definition makes:
