The Biopower Of Zombies: Or, How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Horde, Mary Hedengren
Harlot: A Revealing Look at the Arts of Persuasion
I like zombies. I really like zombies. But I'm not the only one: why do so many of us seem to be enjoying a zombie moment? What does it say about our fears of a decentralized government and the power of human bodies? And what is that faintly discernable groaning sound? In this article, I draw on the theories of Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri as well as Foucault's "biopower" concept to examine our collective fascination with a collective threat.

Effects Of Cellulase Hydrolysis And Carbonates On The Probiotic Fermentation Of Noni (Morinda Citrifolia), Hui-Hung Lee, Li-Jung Yin, Shann-Tzong Jiang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
In typical fermentation of noni (Morina citrifolia), nutrients loss, along with unfavorable taste and odor frequently occurred due to the time-consuming fermentation. To improve the quality of fermented noni, cellulase hydrolysis and probiotic fermentation were employed. Four hours of hydrolysis with 100 U/mL of cellulase at 50°C significantly increased the reducing sugar, total phenolic content, reducing power, and trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity. No probiotics tested in this study could grow on the noni slurry and its hydrolysate, except for Pediococcus pentosaceus (BCRC 14053), which was able to grow on noni with 0.6% calcium carbonate. The probiotic count increased to 8.55 …

Investigation On Intermittent Microwave-Assisted Extraction Of Sulfated Polysaccharides From Porphyra Dentata, Shao-Chi Wu, Yeu-Pyng Lin
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This study investigated the intermittent microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) of sulfated polysaccharides from Porphyra (P.) dentata Kjellman, 1897. The experiment consisted of adjusting 10% to 90% ethanol solutions (v/v) used as extraction solvents, and then applied intermittent MAE to extract P. dentata solutions. These different extract solutions were then further evaluated for their sulfated polysaccharides contents (μg/mL). The optimal conditions of the sulfated polysaccharides content using intermittent MAE with 3, 4, and 5 cycle treatment were studied using response surface methodology. This study was performed using a three-level, threefactor design and aimed to determine the optimal combination of ethanol concentration (10~90%, …

Sensorineural hearing loss is a common and currently irreversible disorder, because mammalian hair cells (HCs) do not regenerate and current stem cell and gene delivery protocols result only in immature HC-like cells. Importantly, although the transcriptional regulators of embryonic HC development have been described, little is known about the postnatal regulators of maturating HCs. Here we apply a cell type-specific functional genomic analysis to the transcriptomes of auditory and vestibular sensory epithelia from early postnatal mice. We identify RFX transcription factors as essential and evolutionarily conserved regulators of the HC-specific transcriptomes, and detect Rfx1,2,3,5 and 7 in the developing HCs. …

In a recent report Title et al. (1) fostered miRNA-375 and miR-200c knock-out pups to wild-type dams and arrived at the conclusion that milk microRNAs are bioavailable in trace amounts at best and that postprandial concentrations of microRNAs are too low to elicit biological effects. Their take home message is flawed. First, the majority of microRNAs in bovine milk are encapsulated in exosomes, thereby conferring protection against degradation and a mechanism for intestinal transport (2). Second, numerous dietary microRNAs have been cataloged among human samples (3). Third, the mere absence of a postprandial increase does not equate with zero absorption. …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Laccases are multi-copper oxidases that widely distributed in plants and fungi. These enzymes catalyze oxidation of various compounds including phenolics and non-phenolics, and have been used in many industrial processes such as paper industry, biobleaching and bioremediation. A full length cDNA (1767 bp) encoding a putative laccase (Lac) from Rigidoporus vinctus was cloned by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The coding region of RvLac encodes 517 amino acids which contained four conserved putative copper-binding regions. To further characterize the RvLac, the coding region was subcloned into an expression vector pET-20b(+) and transformed into E. coli BL21 (DE3) pLysS. Expression of the …

Restricted And Repetitive Behaviors As Strengths, Not Weaknesses: Evaluating The Use Of Social Stories That Embed Restricted Interests On The Social Skills Of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Maya Nasr
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which the use of social stories that integrate a child’s particular restricted and repetitive behaviors results in differential social outcomes compared to the use of social stories that do not integrate restricted and repetitive behaviors. A non-concurrent multiple baseline experimental design across participants was used to examine the effects of two Social Story interventions on the frequency of appropriate social behaviors made by participants in a school setting. Field notes were also completed during each day of data collection in order to document the social context, events, activities, moods …

Cosmetic products, such as facial scrubs, have been identified as potentially important primary sources of microplastics to the marine environment. This study characterises, quantifies and then investigates the sorptive properties of plastic microbeads that are used as exfoliants in cosmetics. Polyethylene microbeads were extracted from several products, and shown to have a wide size range (mean diameters between 164 and 327μm). We estimated that between 4594 and 94,500 microbeads could be released in a single use. To examine the potential for microbeads to accumulate and transport chemicals they were exposed to a binary mixture of 3H-phenanthrene and 14C-DDT …

Higher education is coming under increasing scrutiny, both publically and within academia, with respect to its ability to appropriately prepare students for the careers that will make them competitive in the 21st-century workplace. At the same time, there is a growing awareness that many global issues will require creative and critical thinking deeply rooted in the technical STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) disciplines. However, the existing and ingrained structures of higher education, particularly in the STEM fields, are not set up to provide students with extensive skill development in communication, teamwork, and divergent thinking, which is needed …
