Loss Of Glycosaminoglycan Receptor Binding After Mosquito Cell Passage Reduces Chikungunya Virus Infectivity, Amber M. Paul, Dhiraj Acharya, John F. Anderson, Faqing Huang, Fengwei Bai

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a mosquito-transmitted alphavirus that can cause fever and chronic arthritis in humans. CHIKV that is generated in mosquito or mammalian cells differs in glycosylation patterns of viral proteins, which may affect its replication and virulence. Herein, we compare replication, pathogenicity, and receptor binding of CHIKV generated in Vero cells (mammal) or C6/36 cells (mosquito) through a single passage. We demonstrate that mosquito cell derived CHIKV (CHIKVmos) has slower replication than mammalian cell derived CHIKV (CHIKVvero), when tested in both human and murine cell lines. Consistent with this, CHIKVmos infection in both cell lines produce less cytopathic …

Computational Analysis Of The Stereoselective Synthesis Of Substituted Pyrrolidines, Diamond T. Jones
Computational Analysis Of The Stereoselective Synthesis Of Substituted Pyrrolidines, Diamond T. Jones
McNair Scholars Research Journal
In this work we use computational methods to study the aza-Cope-Mannich tandem reaction of a substituted oxazolidine to form a formyl pyrrolidine. Pyrrolidine structural motifs are found in natural products, pharmaceutical compounds, and chiral catalysts. Often only one stereoisomer of these compounds is active, while the others are inactive or toxic. Our goal is to determine reaction conditions and substrate characteristics that lead to one stereoisomer preferentially over the others. We focus on an oxazolidine starting material with an electron-withdrawing group at the nitrogen center and a bulky substituent at the alpha position. The long-term objective is to delineate the …
Queering Asexuality: Asexual-Inclusion In Queer Spaces, Dominique A. Canning
Queering Asexuality: Asexual-Inclusion In Queer Spaces, Dominique A. Canning
McNair Scholars Research Journal
Discussions about emerging sexual identities are prevalent in today’s society. As our recognition of the diversity of sexual identities grows, so does our need to define these identities and to better understand how they represent the human experience. One such identity is asexuality, which is defined by the Asexual Visibility and Education Network (AVEN) as a “person who experiences no sexual attraction” (“Overview” n.d.). In this research, I will analyze the debate over whether asexual individuals should be considered “queer.” This analysis will examine previous research that focuses on identity, discourse, and boundaries between identities. The goal of this research …

Early agricultural education programs in the United States existed to promote new methods and techniques to further agricultural production. Today, extending integration, general knowledge, appreciation, and literacy about agriculture is the goal, especially at the middle school level. Not only is agricultural education designed to encompass academics, but science and technology, literacy, and career preparedness are parts of the total agricultural education program. Since the passage of No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), more pressure has been put on teachers to generate increased student academic performance and improvement of test scores. The purpose of this research study was to determine …

Case Study: Identification, Characterization And Mitigation Of Growth Inhibitory Leachable Compound From Disposable Plastic Vessels, Zara Melkounian
Case Study: Identification, Characterization And Mitigation Of Growth Inhibitory Leachable Compound From Disposable Plastic Vessels, Zara Melkounian
Single-Use Technologies: Bridging Polymer Science to Biotechnology Applications
The inhibition of CHO cell growth was observed in culture medium incubated in disposable plastic vessel, but not in a control glass vessel. Gamma irradiation of vessels during terminal sterilization step was required to produce the growth inhibitory leachable, as unsterilized vessels showed no inhibition of cell growth. Also, the growth inhibition was cell line specific in that some CHO cells were more sensitive than others, and some were not sensitive at all.
Using chromatographic and spectroscopic methods we were able to identify and characterize a single leachable responsible for this growth inhibition in some CHO cells. By understanding the …
