Cow Feed Efficiency Unknowns Including Utilization Of Range Forages, Douglas L. Olsen
Cow Feed Efficiency Unknowns Including Utilization Of Range Forages, Douglas L. Olsen
Range Beef Cow Symposium
Olsen Ranches is a family-owned diversified operation located in western Nebraska near Harrisburg. The Olsens have a commercial and registered cow herd that markets harvest ready animals as well as replacement females and bulls. Custom services include custom individual feed intake data collection with a GrowSafe system, custom feeding, and custom AI work. The farm enterprise crops include wheat, corn, barley, peas, annual forages, and alfalfa on both dry land and irrigated farm ground. In 2010, Olsens installed a GrowSafe system on the ranch to measure feed intake of steers that are part of the American Hereford Association’s National Reference …
Feed Efficiency In The Range Beef Cow: What Should We Be Looking Att?, H. H. "Trey" Patterson
Feed Efficiency In The Range Beef Cow: What Should We Be Looking Att?, H. H. "Trey" Patterson
Range Beef Cow Symposium
Beef cow efficiency is a critically important topic for range cow producers. Feed efficiency, or the ability to convert grazed forages into production, is obviously an important aspect of overall cow efficiency. The late Bob Taylor from CSU made the statement “profitable cattle are usually productive, but productive cattle are not always profitable” (Taylor, 1994). That is an inherently important concept in the efficiency discussion, as it leads us to question the important metrics in determining feed efficiency in the cow.
How To Use Commercially Available Genomic Predictions, Michael G. Gonda
How To Use Commercially Available Genomic Predictions, Michael G. Gonda
Range Beef Cow Symposium
Genomic predictions for commercial cattle can be used to select replacement heifers, design mating strategies, and market calves. Presently, two companies (Igenity and Zoetis) offer genomic tests for commercial cattle. Like expected progeny differences (EPDs) on young bulls, these genomic tests do not perfectly predict genetic merit. However, these tests will be useful for identifying genetically superior and inferior animals for the traits tested. Some tests are useful only for predominantly Black Angus (≥ 75%) cattle, while other tests can be used on all Bos taurus beef breeds and crossbreds. Further, some tests are designed specifically for producers who are …

Seismic Surveys And Marine Turtles: An Underestimated Global Threat?, Sarah E. Nelms, Wendy Dow Piniak, Caroline R. Weir, Brendan J. Godley
Environmental Studies Faculty Publications
Seismic surveys are widely used in marine geophysical oil and gas exploration, employing airguns to produce sound-waves capable of penetrating the sea floor. In recent years, concerns have been raised over the biological impacts of this activity, particularly for marine mammals. While exploration occurs in the waters of at least fifty countries where marine turtles are present, the degree of threat posed by seismic surveys is almost entirely unknown. To investigate this issue, a mixed-methods approach involving a systematic review, policy comparison and stakeholder analysis was employed and recommendations for future research were identified. This study found that turtles have …

The George H. Bradley Black Fly Papers (Diptera: Simuliidae), T. M. Nations, K. T. Edwards, J. Goddard
Midsouth Entomologist
Dr. George H. Bradley, a former USDA and Army entomologist, conducted research on a variety of medically important insects during his career; most notably mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) and black flies (Diptera: Simuliidae). Much of Dr. Bradley’s personal library was donated to the Mississippi Entomological Museum at Mississippi State University after his death. Six of Dr. Bradley’s papers in that library, apparently never published, were discovered concerning the ecology and biology of the southern buffalo gnat, which he called Eusimulium pecuarum, (now known as Cnephia pecuarum). These unpublished works provide much needed and never before seen information on this medically important …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Nano-scale resistive memories are expected to fuel dense integration of electronic synapses for large-scale neuromorphic system. To realize such a brain-inspired computing chip, a compact CMOS spiking neuron that performs in-situ learning and computing while driving a large number of resistive synapses is desired. This work presents a novel leaky integrate-and-fire neuron design which implements the dual-mode operation of current integration and synaptic drive, with a single opamp and enables in-situ learning with crossbar resistive synapses. The proposed design was implemented in a 0.18μm CMOS technology. Measurements show neuron’s ability to drive a thousand resistive synapses, and demonstrate an in-situ …

The Detection And Molecular Evolution Of Francisella Tularensis Subspecies, Mark K. Gunnell
Theses and Dissertations
Francisella tularensis is the etiological agent of tularemia, a zoonotic disease with worldwide prevalence. F. tularensis is a highly pathogenic organism and has been designated as a potential biothreat agent. Currently there are four recognized subspecies of F. tularensis: tularensis (type A), holarctica (type B), mediasiatica, and novicida. In addition, genomic studies have further subdivided type A tularensis into two subclassifications, type A.I and type A.II. These two subclassifications differ in geographic distribution with type A.I appearing mainly in the Eastern United States and type A.II appearing mainly in the Western United States. Because of differences of virulence among the …

The formation and development of maize kernel is a complex dynamic physiological and biochemical process that involves the temporal and spatial expression of many proteins and the regulation of metabolic pathways. In this study, the protein profiles of the endosperm and pericarp at three important developmental stages were analyzed by isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantification (iTRAQ) labeling coupled with LC-MS/MS in popcorn inbred N04. Comparative quantitative proteomic analyses among developmental stages and between tissues were performed, and the protein networks were integrated. A total of 6,876 proteins were identified, of which 1,396 were nonredundant. Specific proteins and different …

Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education, or STEM, is an area that is currently growing in popularity with educators (Becker & Park, 2011). A qualitative study consisting of interviews was conducted and data were gathered from three leaders in professional STEM organizations, four principals from elementary STEM schools, and six teachers from elementary STEM schools to gain their perceptions of elementary STEM schools in Missouri. The perceptions of leaders in professional STEM organizations regarding STEM education were consistently all positive, and each leader was a proponent of STEM education at the elementary level. The perceptions of principals and teachers were …
Grit And Student Performance: A Mixed-Method Analysis Of A Non-Traditional Technical High School And A Traditional High School, Ronda L. Wallace
Grit And Student Performance: A Mixed-Method Analysis Of A Non-Traditional Technical High School And A Traditional High School, Ronda L. Wallace
Dissertations
Grit, defined as the tendency to pursue long-term goals with sustained zeal and hard work, was shown to predict achievement in academic, vocational, and avocational domains. In 2009, Duckworth and Quinn found that grit predicted student effectiveness in school and the concept of grit was largely unrelated to talent. Grit provided incremental predictive validity for achievement outcomes, particularly in settings of high challenge. From the combination of persistence, self-control, and more broadly, conscientiousness, emerges the concept of grit. The purpose of this study was to compare the relative grittiness of students from two different high school settings. The first of …

Inhalational general anesthesia results from the poorly understood interactions of haloethers with multiple protein targets, which prominently includes ion channels in the nervous system. Previously, we reported that the commonly used inhaled anesthetic sevoflurane potentiates the activity of voltage-gated K+ (Kv) channels, specifically, several mammalian Kv1 channels and the Drosophila K-Shaw2 channel. Also, previous work suggested that the S4-S5 linker of K-Shaw2 plays a role in the inhibition of this Kv channel by n-alcohols and inhaled anesthetics. Here, we hypothesized that the S4-S5 linker is also a determinant of the potentiation of Kv1.2 and K-Shaw2 by sevoflurane. Following functional expression …

Previous work suggested a role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) metabolism on branch density, the statistical distribution of physical distances between branch points along a growing hypha in Neurospora. Here we report the results of experiments designed to ask more generally about the relationship between ROS and branch density by examining the branching effects of selected ROS metabolism gene knockout mutants as well as the impact on branching of exogenously added antioxidants. In all ROS metabolism mutants tested, growth was shown to branch less densely (hypobranching) when grown at lower temperatures, a shift not observed in the wild-type. Interestingly, this …
